Chef Jackie Cameron tells us about her neighbourhood WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGES: ROY ESTERHUYSEN, CHRIS ALLEN, STEPHEN PILBROUGH, GOOGLE & ISTOCK

I’ve been overseas over 30 times for various cooking events and nothing beats the ubuntu feeling I get in Hilton JACKIE CAMERON

comes to move out of my school, I know one thing for sure, I will have a state-of-the-art kitchen and maybe even a walk-in fridge.”

J

ackie Cameron lives, works, and plays in Hilton in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. She’s been overseas more than 30 times, and says nothing beats the feeling of coming home to Hilton. “It’s been my home-hood since 1994, and it offers a sense of tranquillity, an almost untouched beauty and a lovely warm country feel – it’s where my heart is.” Hilton, known as the gateway to the Midlands Meander, is about 12km away from Pietermaritzburg. Its superb cooler climate, very English history and winding lanes have given it its hedgerows and manicured gardens. The area is also renowned for its excellent private schools. Jackie says her home is more than just a house. “It’s my school, my home, my parents’ home and that of the staff and students. My parents built it in 1994, and when it was completed, my dad swore he’d never lay another brick. Well, that was then, and we’ve been uplifting, changing and improving ever since!”

Jackie loves her proximity to work. “I couldn’t be more hands-on than I am now. I love the fact that work and home are so close,” she says. As for go-to spots for eating out, she says: “I don’t get out much. I’ve always had coffee in my school, with my Simonelli machine and Terbodore coffee. Such a treat. I do eat at Taste of Thai for SA’s most authentic Thai food – I get cravings for the Tom Yum, Pad Thai and Massaman Curry. I also enjoy Artisan for the Pulled Pork Burger – a recent discovery – and the pizzas and Chicken Livers.” Jackie works most Sundays, but tries to make time for lunch. “My fiancé usually cooks something truly delicious on the Weber. We try to chill with friends and family, and soak in the stunning views we’re so fortunate to have. I can’t wait to open my restaurant space and share this with everyone!”

Jackie is full of praise for her hugely supportive parents. She lived relatively close to them for many years, but long working hours meant she missed out on a lot of family time. “Now it’s pretty special to be able to enjoy dinner with my folks most evenings. My mom’s still the best home cook out there!” It’s no surprise that in Jackie’s homecum-school, the kitchen is the hero. “I have every appliance possible, a walk-in fridge and freezer, and an entire double-garage storeroom of dry goods,” she says. “When the day PUBLISHED BY TIMES MEDIA PROPERTY PUBLISHING Unit G04, Old Castle Brewery Bldg 6 Beach Road, Woodstock Cape Town, 087 828 0423

My business neighbourhood The Biltong Box is a certified halaal biltong outlet at Gateway Theatre of Shopping WORDS: TIVANIA MOODLEY

IMAGE:

T

he Biltong Box is the brainchild of Grant Letley and his wife, Shirley, who recognised that a halaal biltong outlet would cater to a larger demographic and fill a gap in the market. Grant tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: The business was a long-standing dream. My wife and I were looking at a sustainable business in the food sector. We looked at the idea of biltong for a long time and once we had the thought of making it halaal, the plans took off from there. We’ve rapidly become the top retail outlet for certified halaal biltong anywhere in KwaZulu-Natal. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We have two kiosks in Gateway mall and a third on its way at the Phoenix Plaza. Shopping malls have the foot traffic which is key to the success of any retail business. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Gateway was the mall I frequented

on an almost daily basis. Seeing the foot traffic and mix of visitors made this the natural and first choice for me to open my stores here. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Gateway is the premier mall in Durban that attracts not only locals but tourists as well. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: My neighbours are the usual mix of retail stores. Our kiosks are in the walkways and are not a fixed store. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: They’re the same as any other mall. Prices are competitive and market related. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: On average, 150 on weekdays and 400 on weekends. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We’ll be franchising our business

concept in a few months and rolling out stores countrywide. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: This is something we’re looking into at the moment as we have a lot of clients from afar and even overseas. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: We have an exceptional, fresh and delicious range of sliced biltong – stix as well as wors. Our popularity is based on the quality of our product, the fact that we're the premier supplier of halaal biltong in any mall in KwaZulu-Natal and the fact that we offer exceptional service to our valued clients.

Baby, it’s cold outside Get your home winter-ready with these easy tips WORDS: CHARIS LE RICHE IMAGE: ISTOCK

Before you buy your rugs, though, make sure the colour and patterns complement the style of your room.

Outside

The fireplace A fireplace is a great way to keep your house warm, and an increasing number of people are seeing the benefits of having one in the home. If you already have a fireplace, be sure to stock up on wood and get it cleaned and inspected.

here’s been a not-so-subtle dip in morning and evening temperatures lately – a sure sign that winter is here and we’d better be prepared. Here are our top tips to help you get ready for winter. Clean your gutters Now is the perfect time to clean your gutters – before the heavy winter rains arrive. You don’t want to end up with rainwater in your home because your gutters were so clogged that the water had nowhere else to go. Inspect your roof Check your roof for any leaks or damage, and fix them before the rains arrive. Also inspect all windows and doors to ensure they’re properly sealed.

Inside

Layers There’s nothing better than snuggling up on the couch when it’s cold outside. Get your couch winter-ready with a few throws. It’s an inexpensive way to make your lounge cosier while adding different textures to the decor. This also works well in the bedroom. Invest in rugs If you have floor tiles throughout your house, add a few rugs in key areas. Look for textured rugs that’ll protect your feet from the cold.

HOME COMFORT: Solar control double glazing, as is the case with PG SmartGlass X2, improves insulation by up to 70%. In summer, natural light is allowed in – creating a more airy interior space – while up to 66% of heat from the sun is repelled, cooling the house. In winter, heat is kept in the home by the superior insulation performance, maintaining its warmth. This reduces the need for air-conditioning and heating systems, in turn decreasing energy costs. PG SmartGlass is SANS 10400 Part XA compliant, with four options available (Standard, Plus, Elite and Superior). These can be selected according to the direction windows face and the functions they assist with, such as noise or solar insulation. pgsmartglass.co.za
