ost schools reopened this past week and we’re already halfway into January. While part of me would still like the holiday dreaminess to linger, it’s really time to get going. The beauty of coming back after a break is that there’s really more clarity and possibility to everything. You can literally decide what you want to value this year. I think I’m going to be more in favour of my home and perhaps dabble in some
DIY. I’ve already started a garden project, but we’ll see how that goes. As for the Neighbourhood team the focus will be on celebrating people, places, and property. May your 2016 be memorable.

The beautiful building, plopped perfectly on South Beach, may have a white art stencil outside braying, “burgers, pizzas, cocktails, ice cream”, but it’s so much more. I knew things were hotting up when, after the famed beach Surf Riders RetroRobics classes with Eugene on a Saturday morning, my usual eggs Benedict was served with seared tuna and the next week it was with smoked mackerel. With the new summer menu launch, a chilled DJ syncing into soulful summer grooves, Surf Riders has ingeniously created a Friday night social scene introducing its Tap House Friday sessions. tucking into the whole, fire-roasted fish with sea salt, lemon, garlic and wild oregano, “This is the freshest, most beautifully presented food I have had in a long time.” Indeed, it was magnificent. The man behind the scenes is talented chef Brendon Newport – formerly chef at Craft Trattoria, and Bean Bag Bohemia – who knows how to cook fresh fish in a wood-fired pizza oven at high temperature. The red snapper fell off the bone. It was light, perfectly textured and oh so delicate on the palate. Heavenly. The starter conceptualised by Surf Riders GM Samantha Small-Shaw, was a work of art in taste and authentic design. The smashed, Campariroasted plums getting fresh with the Gorgonzola, mozzarella, rocket, balsamic reduction and light layers of Parma ham, was a taste sensation. We tucked into the creamy, Chardonnay-splashed lemon zest and chilli langoustine, prawns and clam linguine. Sublime.
The eatery has delish, fresh coast mussels and chorizo served with sourdough ciabatta; tequila chicken wings served with cheese quesadillas; and the classic Surf & Turf Benedict with ham and prawn combo topped with orange and pomegranate hollandaise sauce and flash-fried baby spinach, potato and rosemary toast. This is a true-blue Durban summer hang-out. It has craft beer and drinks specials and a creative menu for your South Beach feast.

oing out for a meal is a dilemma nowadays. As Durban’s food and entertainment scene grows exponentially, it’s becoming a little difficult to stand out. But I’ve found a place that does just that – with finesse. Ask a Durbanite what his or her new favourite restaurant is and someone will mention the spectacular Pop-Up Society on Helen Joseph Road in Glenwood. Having recently flung open its restaurant doors to the public, this stylish but comfortable spot has won much acclaim from food critics and regular patrons.

With its diverse range of offerings, PopUp Society’s menu will keep you coming back for more. Please do try the Naked Burger – the courgette, pea and mint rosti is well worth ditching the bun for. Furry friends are also welcome, with a special menu catering to your favourite canine’s tastes. As a multitalented media specialist, Samora Chapman loves getting under the skin of the city he lives in, describing it as “difficult to define, because Durban is so many things. It’s a seaside city and there’s almost nowhere in the world that compares in that regard. The beachfront is the most unified space in the city, and I go almost every day for a salty baptism. The city itself throbs – it’s a crowded, busy, vibrant African metropolis. It truly is one of the most eclectic and vibrant cities on the planet. And it all stems from the intersection of cultures – we have Zulus, Indians, Mozambicans, Zimbabweans, Congolese, westerners and more living, working, praying and playing together in one city”. “Up on the suburban ‘hill’, it’s cooler and more temperate. The parks are lush and increasingly integrated, and the cafe lifestyle has become more common. I like communal spaces – areas where people drink coffee on the sidewalk or meet to walk their dogs and throw a Frisbee. Durban is all these things, and much more.”

Diane Cassells is a self-taught photographer who is somewhat Insta-famous for her incredible portraits and engaging manner on Instagram. Diane describes Durban as “a delightful diva. Durban is a showoff with her beaches and sunsets – not to mention her delightfully demure temperatures throughout the year – a photographer’s dream. And, of course, where else can you boast of wildlife viewing in your own backyard – no 4x4 required. They come to you. The vervet monkeys are a daily treasure for me. I love snapping these little scallywags as they play on my jungle gym and lounge around the pool, basking in the Durban weather all year round.”

If you’ve hung out at The Winston Pub or headed out to a house party in Durban, chances are, you’ve met Russell Grant. He has been snapping pictures for as long as he can remember. Why January is a bad time for landlords

CO-FOUNDER, 3 MILLAR ROAD ARKUS ARCHITECTURAL PRACTICE Q: How did your business start? A: W ith a dream. Mine was to surround myself with like-minded, creative people. It’s been hard work, but I wouldn’t change it for the world – I’m now surrounded by some of the most amazing, creative people in my business. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: D urban CBD and surrounds is such a melting pot of South African culture, a truer reflection of the demographics of the city we live in… and we enjoy being part of it. There’s something inspiring about being in the middle of a working city. The focus of our practice is on rejuvenating Durban’s CBD, something we’re passionate about, so we put our money where our mouths are, and moved into the area we were working on architecturally. Q: How did you find your premises? A: W e looked for spaces that inspired us. The building we found was
perfect, owned by Karen and Claus Bradtke who have an art gallery in the building, ArtSPACE. The top floor was industrial-style studio spaces for artists – it needed some work, but was right up our alley and love at first sight. We gutted the entire floor and converted it into our industrial, retro-style work space. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: So many factors. Our practice specialises in an industrial-style architecture. We were able to convert an existing warehouse structure into our dream offices, five minutes from the CBD – where most of our work occurs – and when we look out our windows, we see working railways, bustling roads and the most amazing view of Durban’s Moses Mabhida Stadium. We couldn’t be more perfectly positioned. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Most have been around for a
decade or longer. Businesses seem to stay a lifetime in the Umgeni Road area. Below us is ArtSPACE the art gallery, and across the road, Waste Centre Fabrics. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Compared to the north of Durban, shop rental/sales prices are really good value for the size. Properties don’t seem to change hands that often here – one of the reasons we decided to buy and be part of the area’s upgrade. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We do. We’ve always wanted to grow the creative community, so we’ve extended to include other entrepreneurs. We’ve been joined by a craft beer brewery and videographers. Interior designers will be moving in soon, and in February we’ll be converting a portion of the art gallery into artisan studio spaces which will act as incubators for creative entrepreneurs.

This phenomenon is unique only to January.” Dickens continues, “Tenants who display the classic festive season syndrome are not malicious in nature, but are simply caught in a continuation of their holiday payment behaviour before reality sets in and they return to their better selves and better payment behaviour.”

Bridge City takes shape
D
evelopment at Bridge City, north of Durban, is gathering momentum with the precinct emerging as a key investment location and a strategic regional precinct and transport hub.

Brian Ive, development executive, Tongaat Hulett Developments, says that a number of sales have been concluded recently and that construction of two of these developments is beginning during the first quarter of this year.
While the second is primarily industrial with a single hospital, Bridge City, however, is a mixeduse development that will provide for light industrial use as well as accommodate medical, commercial, retail and residential elements.
