t’s the end of the year and things are drawing to a close. With most of our advertisers on leave too, it really is time for a well-deserved break for everyone. It starts with a fresh coconut creamy pina colada at the second-floor Elangeni pool deck. Next minute, you’re seated downstairs at the revamped Lingela restaurant buffet that would make Asterix and Obelix salivate. The hotel’s executive chef Shaun Munro, and chef Athizaam Rassool, along with their talented young team, are in fine form.
We tucked into the lavish selection of cheeses; the beautiful starters with salmon mousse; fresh, pop-inyour-mouth dolmades and halloumi cheese wrapped snugly and lovingly in soft eggplant; and the most succulent tandoori chicken with juju in its sauce brought us back for more. Yep, don’t bother eating lunch if you’re heading to Lingela.

sidelined – a lovely paneer tikka masala would work, as the vegetable biryani is average. The chicken and prawn curry needs more love with fresh prawns. This curry sauce is not quite on the I-want-more level compared to the high standard of the delish tandoori chicken. This is a real family festive treat. The buffet is beautifully presented with highlights being the cheese and sweets on creative display and the gorgeous copper chafing pots hosting the curries.

I
can barely climb a ladder without reeling from nausea, so a trip to the Chimp & Zee Rope Adventure Park at uShaka Marine World with my friend Jane seemed equal parts terrifying and treacherous for me. But after this sunny day out, I can’t wait to go back.
Obstacles
The adventure park is suitable for everyone above the age of six, who measures at least 1,2m and weighs less than 120kg. Some of the obstacles are downright hair-raising for a non-adventurous type like me, but rest assured you’re safely and snugly strapped into your harness the whole way. As you leap and climb over the obstacles (the crew call them elements), you’ll experience an incredible bird’seye view of uShaka Marine World.
Ever wondered just how big the turtles really are? Well, now you can find out as you watch them swim beneath you as you clamber over a balancing beam.
More than climbing
You’ll impersonate Spiderman as you crawl along a web and jump onto flying surfboards, and you can test your Tarzan skills as you grab onto swing ropes to get across to the next platform. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, though, so I’ll let you get down there to discover exactly what goes into each section of the course. The best part of the Chimp & Zee experience, though, is zip-lining over parts of uShaka.
Friendly crew
Even if you’re an adrenaline junkie (I’m not, so this part was particularly
important to me), you’ll be pleased to know that Chimp & Zee adheres to the strictest safety regulations and is staffed by the friendliest, most helpful crew who will guide you along the way and help out if you get stuck. I confess to wanting to give up just two elements short of the end, but thanks to a friendly instructor, I got through and ended my Tarzan adventure with a zip-line experience I can’t wait to repeat.

R3,1bn development in Umhlanga launched

ceans Umhlanga, billed as KwaZulu-Natal’s largest private-sector investment ever, is the brainchild of businessmen Vivian Reddy, Edison Power and Rob Alexander, Ducatus Property Group. The ultra-luxurious R3,1bn 90,000m2 project at the heart of Umhlanga Village, consists of residential and retail components housed in three towers: two for residences, and the other for Oceans Mall retail. The 460 apartments – each with sea views – range from studios up to single and double penthouses, with prices starting at R1,6m and topping off at R60m. The penthouses – 700m2 each, 28 storeys up – will have a helipad and infinity pool.
Reddy is populating the 33,000m2 Oceans Mall with “the big hitters”. “We’ve confirmed Burberry, Versace, Armani, Boss Orange and Paul Smith, among others. The presence of these brands places us among the top three exclusive malls in the country, alongside Cape Town’s V&A, and Joburg’s Sandton City.” In addition, there’ll be a 200-room, five-star international-brand hotel. Marketing and sales fall under the auspices of DevMark Global. DevMark shares the mandate for Oceans Umhlanga with all other estate agencies. As part of its sales strategy, it will hold its one-on-one sales event for committed buyers on 26 March.

ightstone statistics record that 106 properties in La Lucia on Durban’s North Coast with a collective value of over R341m, have been registered at the Deeds Office over the past 12 months. Of these, 29 were on estates, 43 were freehold and 34 fell under sectional title schemes. According to the stats, the average price paid for a freehold property was R3,34m and R2,99m for a sectional title unit. “La Lucia has expanded in the past decade or so, particularly developing a good spread of gated estates, sectional title units and small complexes – some palatial on the slopes with sea and city views, others more compact and affordable,” says Myles Wakefield, CEO, Wakefields Real Estate. “Being elevated up on the ridge or right down on the beachfront, many of the freestanding homes have glorious
sea views. La Lucia has the great advantage of being in close proximity to the commercial hubs, and blue-chip head offices, on the ‘Ridges’ (La Lucia Ridge and Umhlanga Ridge) as well as King Shaka Airport.” The suburb’s central location undoubtedly acts as a draw card, and Dina Porteous, CEO, Keller Williams Ignite, KZN, says demand for wellpriced homes in this area remains high. “A property usually sells within three weeks, if it’s priced correctly.” She notes that it’s difficult to place an average price on property as values change from street to street and from
complex to complex, and often depend on the views on offer. “Buyers can expect to pay anything from R2m to R7m, although, it has to be said, those looking at property above the R5m price band are often drawn to nearby Mount Edgecombe and Umhlanga.” When asked if the suburb offered good value for money when compared to other nearby, up-market suburbs, Wakefield noted, “If you compare prices to those in Umhlanga, yes, La Lucia offers good value for money. There are, however, prestigious pockets of this suburb – like Lower La Lucia – which can fetch similar prices to those found in Umhlanga.”
