Prestondale is a dream hometown for me – I'm within minutes of everything I love KERI MILLER
O
ne of the oldest suburbs of Umhlanga, Prestondale stretches from close to the N2 freeway down towards the older coastal road, the M4. Names such as Sugar Cane Road and Preston Drive paint are reminders of the old suburb winding through the cane fields and the Preston family after which it’s named. Prestondale is north of the Gateway Theatre of Shopping, is primarily residential with established trees and, because of the slope of the land, many homes in the area have sea views over Umhlanga village. The reinvented section of Prestondale runs down the ridge and the properties there range from apartments to majestic homes.
Home sweet home For East Coast Radio presenter Keri Miller, Umhlanga is more than just home. She loves the area. “I live in a gorgeous – well, that’s how I describe it – two-bedroom apartment with a tiny sea view.” When Keri moved back to Durban from Cape Town a few years ago, she had her eye on the area of Prestondale near Umhlanga village. “It reminds me a little of Cape Town, it’s just across the road from the sea, my yoga studio is walking distance away and the vibe is just amazing. It feels like everyone is on holiday.” Keri says her favourite spot in her home is the lounge. “It has loads of indoor plants, lots of colourful rugs, the scent of Spiritual Guide (my absolute favourite incense) and sunlight just pours in.”
Neighbourhood gems Umhlanga has everything, whether it’s movies, shopping centres, gentle nature trails through Hawaan Forest at the northern-most end of Umhlanga Village, or the Umhlanga promenade where you can take long walks with your dog past the lighthouse. Keri loves the water, particularly Bronze Beach and Granny’s Pool in Salt Rock. For more swimming, yoga or just to keep moving, she chooses Gurucat in Umhlanga Plaza or she visits MovementX for fun workouts. As someone who likes to stay healthy, Keri knows all the go-to spots for wholesome food and drinks. “The area of Umhlanga has so many. For food and smoothies, definitely try Nouriti Cafe inside MovementX. Healthy Umhlanga inside Buxton’s Centre is also amazing. If you’re a coffee person, African Roots Coffee at the Pearls of Umhlanga Mall has great coffee, and Cumin Cafe at Umhlanga Plaza has excellent curry and biryani.” Being fit and healthy doesn’t mean Keri can’t enjoy the nightlife.

“Salsa is really cool for a fun vibe and amazing margaritas and food. The Oyster Box’s Lighthouse Bar is the place to be if you’re looking for a boss cocktail, and, well, Raffles, obviously, for the after party.”
Perfect Sunday “I wake up and watch the sunrise from bed, before making something hot to drink. I walk over the road to the beach, sit on the sand to drink my tea, then jump in the water and swim out to the backline.” Keri follows it up with some meditation on the beach, then heads back home. “Generally, I make every effort to see my family later in the day, and it normally results in a great meal.” Keri says being at home feels like being on holiday. “If I have a day or a week off, I spend it in Umhlanga. The beach is just beautiful and I can’t think of a better way to spend time out. Gorgeous!”

Winter trends W Warm up your bathroom with a rejuvenating facelift as we head into the colder months WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
hat makes a bathroom into the sanctuary you’d like it to be? “Lighting, comfort and functionality,” says Gareth Gee of Simply Bathrooms. “It’s one place where no one should disturb you, where you can let down your guard. So ideally you want it warm and cosy, not hard and cold.” He shares some trends he sees creeping in as we approach the winter months.
Essentials
There are certain elements which are always popular in bathrooms, like heated floors and heated towel rails. These little touches of luxury make the entire bathroom experience enjoyable, particularly in winter. Gareth suggests that every bathroom restoration should include top-quality fittings. “Don’t go cheap. Use superior hardware, so it functions well and the sight or sound of it doesn’t jar, like a loudly flushing loo or noisy taps – these elements break the calm, sensual mood which provides that relaxation.”
Accessories
Gareth says there are two distinct trends: contemporary and vintage. “The contemporary bathrooms tend to be minimalistic with sharp edges, glass and lighting. The others are more opulent, even over the top, with features such as chandeliers, plants, couches, even fireplaces.” It’s all about personal taste. He suggests a neutral bathroom shell, enabling you to vary colours

and textures for the season, without conflicting with the bathroom fixtures. “The trend towards authenticity is a strong one for bathrooms, and natural materials such as wood, stone and concrete are grounding,” Gareth says. Wood is naturally warm to the eye and touch, so it can be used anywhere in the bathrooms to give that earthy feeling, whether it’s a slatted bench or a shower floor. Well-chosen greenery can also enhance the quest for a natural feel.”
Colour
Bathroom hardware is going colourful and/or metallic. “Taps, baths, basins and accessories are leaning strongly towards colour or shine, with rose gold, pink, grey, mustard yellow, brushed brass and matte black the most popular,” Gareth says. Chrome is yesterday. Greys and blacks are still popular, but for winter, warm things up with colourful textured towels and a deep pile bathmat.
Hot hardware
For new floors, Gareth says most people choose oversized tiles, which aside from giving the bathroom a simple neutral look, also minimise the area of grout where mould can grow. Variations such as woodlook-alike tiles, are also being used. For shower lovers, it’s all about walk-in spaces with large overhead shower roses and channels, either with no glass or just a screen to keep it simplistic and easy to use.

My business neighbourhood Alive Again in Umhlanga Rocks produces great snacks using natural ingredients WORDS: TIVANIA MOODLEY
IMAGES: SUPPLIED
Q: How did your business start? A: My successful treatment of longstanding depression and an eating disorder prompted me to use my knowledge to create a healthy, preservative-free snack that was affordable. Alive Again was born in January 2017 and I registered the business in September of that year. I started out with a few small orders at two local health stores. I then did a few local markets, slowly growing to include more local health stores and direct orders via my Instagram account. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: A s my business is still small, working from my home in Umhlanga Rocks suits me financially, as I save on overheads such as rent for premises. I also have a day job (half day) and a young son, so working from home on my own little business gives me the flexibility to try and fit it all in.
W
ith consumers becoming more health-conscious, snacks have evolved from just the salty or excessively sweet treats to healthier versions. Lauren Laurens identified the need for preservative-free snacks, and when she couldn’t find any affordable options at nearby markets, she chose to make her own. She tells us about her business.
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: I’m based in Umhlanga Rocks, which is so central. I use my kitchen counter for production and the study for storage. While the space is rather small it suits me for now as I make the bars myself by hand with the help of my assistant, Thandi. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Residents who have become great clients. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: I have the added benefit of
not having to pay rent at this stage while my business is still in its early stages. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: I have about five enquiries online each day in addition to the orders placed by established clients monthly. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, I would like to have my products available in more health stores and would like to add new flavours to my range. I’m also working on a reduced packaging idea, something even more ecofriendly. Currently, I provide employment for one assistant but would love to help upskill ladies looking for a new start in life. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: I have active Facebook (facebook.com/aliveagainsa) and Instagram (@aliveagainsa) pages and all orders are put through via these avenues. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: My original cocoa cashew date bar and my new peanut butter flavour are winners.

Kirsten Dodds, a designer at Tétris South Africa, unpacks the relationship between fashion and decor trends WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
IMAGE: SUPPLIED
I
t makes sense that trends spill over into most artistic fields. Some of that connection is clear to see, but much of it is the thought and mood behind the threads. Kirsten Dodds, a furniture fixtures and equipment specialist, tells us more about how what you see on the catwalk impacts interior spaces.
Let your ears do the talking
“When it comes to ear candy, bigger is better,” says Kirsten. “Everything from sculptured drop designs to mega hoops and tassels in a range of colours.” The decor connection? “The same bright, bold statement pieces are big in the decor world right now. It fits right in with the surge of maximalist design.” Kirsten suggests having fun with vibrant colours, dramatic patterns, interesting shapes and textures.
Playing with dimensions
Clothing proportions are changing – we’re playing with volume and out-of-the-ordinary pairings. “Think cropped tops with wide-legged trousers, or voluminous sleeves with a ruffled skirt,” says Kirsten. “As more research rolls out, we’re changing the way we think about space and the function of items we choose for these spaces. We’re pushing the
boundaries even further by selecting unexpected pieces to emphasise the feelings they intend to evoke.” Kirsten has used oversized floor lamps and kooky acoustic furniture as elements to achieve this.
Large statement T’s
Slogan T-shirts are making a comeback and they’re bigger than ever. From ethical messages and political opinions to tongue-in-cheek statements, thoughts have been given a voice. For Kirsten, when it comes to design, it’s about not being afraid to be original. “Choose interior products that say something about you or the space. Previously conservative corporate spaces are now opting for bold installations. Being over the top is no longer frowned upon.”
Unusual combinations
Weird is the new wonderful in floral arrangements. An eccentric combination of oddities can be used for maximum surprise. “Like a plastic fork paired with a feather and a daisy in a potato!” says Kirsten with a laugh. “The off-the-wall compositions may, at first, make you feel uncomfortable before you see the intention behind them. With design, the trend plays into expressive styling
with unusual textures, interesting layering and statement furniture.”
Statement socks
“Half-calf statement socks are everywhere – the more stripes, patterns and logos, the better. Even mismatched goes,” says Kirsten. She adds that in the interior space, it’s about creating rooms that tell a story. “We achieve this by stacking design elements, one on top of the next. This bold trend is exciting and can be applied to so many different spaces – unusual colour and fabric choices can jazz up an otherwise demure space, by disrupting.”
A touch of ultraviolet
Bold and vibrant purple is Pantone’s Colour of the Year. Some have used fashionable sport purple velvet leggings or added an ultraviolet accessory like plum-coloured boots. Kirsten says it just screams luxury and can really set a design apart when used in the right combination.
Consume carefully
Kirsten sees a trend in 2018 towards consuming things in just the right amount. “It’s more than just filling a space, it’s about thoughtful design, superior quality and carefully crafted products with effortless functionality.”
