ooi Rok Bokkie is a unique and proudly South African ladieswear range by Tarryn Shepherd. Q: How did your business start? A: My business started two years ago. I was working in the clothing industry and I was itching to start my own line. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Durban North is closer to my fabric and trim suppliers and the specialised stores that sell my needles and thread. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I had an opportunity to work from my parents’ home as they have three spare rooms and an outside section. It is also handy having my mom around for advice on sewing and pattern techniques. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It’s closer to my fabric suppliers, as well as stores I supply, and many of my customers are from areas
close to Durban North. It’s also handy having my parcels collected from Durban North for delivery to stores outside of KwaZulu-Natal. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: My neighbours are mostly residential. However, just down the road is the first and original Hirsch’s store, Mica and Berciles. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: My business operates mainly online and through personal customers, but I have a steady stream of orders and repeat customers. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I would love to hire more staff. I am slowly going to introduce a children’s line into my range and produce more bags and possibly garments suited for maternity as well as after baby is born.
Q: Do you operate online as well? A: I sell my items off Facebook and Instagram (@rooi_rok_ bokkie), and I’m planning to set up an online store. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: A nything from my Protea Range, be it the clutch bags, pyjamas or shift dresses. This range has done so well because it’s our own unique digitally printed fabric. My friend and artist Tinks did the artwork for me. I love her style – hand-painted proteas in soft pastel colours.

Sales picking up at a Dullstroom golf estate

onstruction of homes is under way in the 774ha Highland Gate Golf and Trout Estate situated on the edge of the Steenkampsberg plateau, about 14km from the scenic town of Dullstroom in Mpumalanga. Once completed the estate will contain 445 homes and will be the only estate in the area which offers a golf course. Estimated average time of homes on the market increases
“D
ue to significant resistance by home sellers to house price declines, in times of economic and residential demand slowdown, the residential market often moves away from market equilibrium price”, says John Loos, household and property sector strategist, FNB. Therefore, the average market house price level, as depicted by a house price index, is not necessarily the “market equilibrium” price level. Often, in times of market weakness, part of the weakness is reflected in the average transaction price, or its inflation rate, and part of it will be reflected in a longer average time
that it takes to sell a home. The key question around the estimated average time of properties on the market is: “What would be the average time on the market that reflects market equilibrium?” The answer to this is subjective, but FNB’s view is that the level is not far from an average time of three months on the market. From 2014 to early 2016, the estimated average time had been moving broadly sideways at levels around 12 weeks, and this was a time with very mild average house price growth in real terms (zero average house price growth in real terms theoretically reflecting a well-balanced market).

ape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard has been dubbed the “Monaco of the South”.
Rory O’Hagan, CEO: Luxury Portfolio division, Chas Everitt International, says the market for residential property on the Atlantic Seaboard, especially in the top-tier suburbs of Camps Bay, Clifton, Bantry Bay, Bakoven, Fresnaye and Llandudno, operates independently of the general market and is, by and large, unaffected by interest rate fluctuations, political upheavals or a lack of consumer confidence. “Demand is high, supply is scarce and property prices are off the charts,” says O’Hagan.
According to the latest figures from New World Wealth, the Atlantic Seaboard is home to half of the country’s 10 most expensive streets and while US$1m (R13,5m) will currently buy you around 230m2 of prime property in the so-called “Monaco of the South”, the same sum will buy little more than a paltry 20m2 in the real Monaco – a tiny city-state on France’s south-eastern coast. Foreign investment has accounted for 17% of all residential sales in Bantry Bay, Camps Bay, Clifton and Fresnaye over the past five years. However, South African locals are still the predominant homeowners in the area, with over 60% of the topend investors being Capetonians.

emand for retirement property is growing exponentially in South Africa, and due to its pleasant climate and excellent infrastructure, KZN is one of the country’s most popular choices for retirees. However, the market here is struggling to keep up with the increasing interest and many retirement homes find themselves with waiting lists that run into decades. Based on extensive research and a clear understanding of the existing dynamics and demand for retirement living, Tongaat Hulett is now facilitating the creation of retirement opportunities throughout KwaZulu-Natal through the launch of a new initiative, Retire KZN. “Tongaat Hulett has always been at the forefront of developmental change in KwaZulu-Natal. retirement community that will learn about new retirement opportunities before they are released to the public. “Only weeks into the campaign, Retire KZN has generated more than 650 registrations, highlighting the demand for both knowledge and opportunities,” says Wilkinson. “Retire KZN has been conceptualised to build a positive retirement community in KwaZulu-Natal; one that will help people all around the country to appreciate what the region has to offer.”
