oday, calling this coastal stretch of Umhlanga a ‘village’ is probably more of a historical reference than the little everybodyknows-your-name concept. It also differentiates it from its newer, bigger, bolder “live, work, play” relative up the hill, Umhlanga Ridge. The village reference is evident in the vibey street-side cafes and bistros, proximity to numerous shops that satisfy every need from a new car to a fresh bagel, and access for you and your dog to the long, lovely boardwalk close to the beach. Holidaymakers visit Umhlanga in their droves to take advantage of the high-end accommodation available. Umhlanga Village has also long been favoured for its many
time-share hotels and units. “I love the cosmopolitan vibe and that I can walk everywhere,” says Casey Clark from Gauteng, who takes up her Cabana Beach hotel time-share at the Easter and Christmas holidays. Glam hotels such as the Beverly Hills and The Oyster Box overlook the lighthouse, beach and sea, while little boutique hotels and B&Bs can be found along the coastline. Along with the introduction of developments such as the Pearls of Umhlanga, and recently, Oceans Umhlanga, accommodation, retail and commercial businesses have come to town with multimillion-rand penthouses and international clothing brands. Rani Pillay, a new resident in a large sectional title complex along Marine
Drive, says living in the area is more than she ever dreamed of. “I can hear the sea from my bedroom, and can access the beach from our unit, so I feel as if I’m on a beach holiday most of the time, even though my workplace is in Granada Centre!” With panoramic sea views from elevated patios, close enough to taste the salty sea spray, access to a variety of restaurants, and the close proximity to important destinations like King Shaka International Airport, life in Umhlanga Village is good. Umhlanga’s active publicprivate partnership UIP (Urban Improvement Precinct) ensures that the area – one of the province’s top tourism hot spots – is well maintained and policed.

I’ve lived in the Village for over two decades, and even though it’s increasingly the place to live and play, its spatial limitation of sea and freeway means that as much as it climbs the ladder, it can’t grow out of its village status GAIL FREEMAN, RESIDENT

My business neighbourhood Allwheys Juiced offers fresh, protein-packed smoothies in Westville WORDS: TIVANIA MOODLEY
IMAGES: SUPPLIED
Z
uhaira Moolla tapped into the growing trend of healthy living with her business, Allwheys Juiced. Her smoothies are made from fresh fruit or whey protein derived from high quality supplements, and are designed to the client’s specifications. Zuhaira tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: My husband is a bodybuilder and through supporting him, I managed to delve into the business of supplements. After helping him plan and prep for his bodybuilding shows, I thought it would be amazing for fitness enthusiasts to have supplements at their fingertips, while also making them available to ordinary people. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Being based in a gym is ideal as people are here to get fitter, and my smoothie bar has the perfect tools to help them attain their fitness goals. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I have always liked Westwood
Mall. When I found out that Planet Fitness was going to open in the mall, I thought that this would be the perfect place for my concept and approached the gym. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Being inside the Planet Fitness gym in Westwood Mall couldn't have been more appropriate. My smoothies and pre-workout drinks are aimed at people who want to be healthier. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: I don't have neighbours as Planet Fitness takes the entire lower level of the mall. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: I’m located in the mall so I pay a mall rental per square metre. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: My smoothie bar is situated at the entrance. Each member passes my bar when they enter the gym, so it’s difficult to know the exact
numbers, but there’s a good amount of foot traffic. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Absolutely, as I believe the concept is great. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: I have an active Instagram account where I upload the latest product information. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: A ll my smoothies are delicious, but it depends on the individual and their requirements. If they want to lose weight, it's the Bum Burner or Skinny Up smoothie made with Nutritech. Men wanting to bulk up choose the 650ml Incredible Hulk or King Kong smoothie made with Pro Supps, while the kids love the delicious chocolate taste of the Kinder Joy smoothie.
