oday Durban plays host to South Africa’s first ever Shisa Nyama Awards and Festival. Set at People’s Park at Moses Mabhida Stadium, this sizzling-hot festival will bring some of Durban’s shisa nyama favourites to one spot, as well as some top-class music acts to celebrate our heritage. The Shisa Nyama Awards judging started in July this year, where six esteemed food editors, critics and restaurateurs visited 25 of the hottest venues to determine the top seven. This year’s awards will take place at the first Shisa Nyama Festival. The following venues were chosen as Durban’s best: Cafe Skyzer in Mayville, Eyadini Lounge and Max’s Lifestyle in Umlazi, One and Only in KwaMashu, Sbu’s Lounge and Under the Moon in Inanda, and Tate’s Kasi Grill in Clermont. In 2017, the judging will move on to Cape Town and Joburg, where the best venues will be crowned. Following this, a national final round of judging will commence, with the winner of South Africa’s best city shisa nyama venue announced at the second Shisa Nyama Festival next year.
“The owners of the shisa nyama venues are the true entrepreneurs of our community, some of them started off as small tuck shop operators during apartheid times or as young businesspeople post 1994, and they have flourished into multimillion rand establishments that command the attention of some of SA’s biggest brands,” says Michelle Lewis, founder, Shisa Nyama Awards and Festival. “I wanted to tell their stories, and saw the opportunity to bring South Africans together on Heritage Day to celebrate and promote this incredible cultural phenomenon. I aim to create a world-class cultural event, like Spain’s tomato festival or Germany’s Oktoberfest, where the world travels to us to experience our culture. I want South Africans to be proud of this event.” Our shisa nyama restaurants are a key tourist product in KwaZulu-Natal that has been actively promoted for years by Tourism KwaZulu-Natal. It has fast become a must-do experience for locals and international visitors.

ocals are definitely familiar with a routine Sunday morning “eggs Benny” at The Glenwood Bakery. The good news is that the bakery has opened up an extension of its culinary prowess – The Glenwood Restaurant. We chatted with Adam Robinson, one of the faces behind Glenwood’s well-loved bakery and restaurant, to get the lowdown. Q: Tell us a little bit about yourself. A: My training is as a chef, working in restaurant kitchens. I was trained in London and also for periods in France. I owned several restaurants and gastro pubs in London before moving to South Africa. Q: When did the restaurant open? A: The restaurant opened in April 2016 as a result of many reasons. Firstly, I sustained an injury to my wrist from baking and needed to give up. But being too young or restless not to work, I thought it might be cool to start cooking again. Q: How would you describe the vibe? A: I would like to think that The Glenwood Restaurant provides good tension between formal – we take food and service very seriously – and informal in the sense that our customers should be able to have a good time when eating with us.
W
hat initially gained popularity over on the other side of the country in Cape Town, has fast become a popular event in the 031. Every first Thursday of the month, Durbanites find reason to get out – on a school night, nogal – with late-night shopping, eating, drinking and entertainment. The trend originally gained traction in the buzzing Station Drive precinct. If you’re looking to kick off your First Thursday, then be sure to head there first.
Over at Station Drive
In the trendy Station Drive precinct, you can stop by these posts on your route: • Music at Distillery 031 – coupled with live DJs and craft cocktails • A brewery tour and bite to eat at S43 restaurant and bar • Art exhibitions and a spot of shopping with Jane Sews, at The Commune • Movies and doccies at The Plant – plus you can also get some delicious
Q: What influenced your style of menu? A: Our influence comes from what tastes good to us. What tastes good,
street food, drinks and popcorn from Renegade Kitchen Station Drive also has plenty of other stores to browse in while you socialise and munch on some tasty street-style food. From vintage clothing and unique home decor, to a brand-new tattoo parlour and artisanal take-home snacks and drinks, there’s plenty to keep you busy.
Florida Road
Florida Road has also taken up the trend and now offers its own First Thursday affair. We recommend using Uber between Station Drive and Florida Road – they’re not too far from each other and you can indulge in a few celebratory cocktails or craft beers. Things to do in Florida Road: • See art exhibitions and live performances at Sidebar. • Grab a falafel wrap from Falafel Fundi. • Play a round of Fifa at Cityzen Cafe.

If you’re still not done with your Thursday night out, then be sure to check out what’s happening at the Rivertown Triangle – packed with more unique shops, foodie stalls and entertainment.

in my mind, is usually what is made from fresh ingredients, hopefully seasonally available. I do not like plates of food with too many flavours and obscure or incongruent references. I am not really that taken by presentation for the sake of presentation. I do believe that delicious well-crafted food usually looks attractive too. Pasta is a big focus on our menu and is made in-house. We have a main menu which changes every few months as well as a daily specials menu. Q: If you had to recommend an ideal order from your menu, what would it be? A: The radicchio and gorgonzola salad as a starter, the ricotta and herb tortellini with sage butter for mains, and the chocolate fondant served with creme fraiche for dessert. Q: What do you love most about your neighbourhood, Glenwood? A: The sophisticated people who live here. Q: If you had to describe the restaurant in three words they’d be? A: Focused on execution.

Cute design WORDS: CHRIS REID

T
here’s a rule in design that if you make something well enough, and with enough thought, people will want to use it over and over again. This works in theory but doesn’t take into account the consumer culture that objects exist within. We generally get tired of something, not because it wears out, but because it’s no longer the newest and best – whether that object is a T-shirt or a TV. So when designers are trying to create objects that last, there’s a new trend towards imbuing them with emotional durability as much as physical durability. By creating things that we bond with as owners, designers are able to ensure that it’s that much harder to throw something away. They want to make us feel attached to the things we own.
The toaster, for example, sneezes when the crumb tray is emptied, while the vacuum cleaner drops (to put it delicately) its dust bag when it’s full and needs changing. This kind of emotional durability is what is so often lacking in modern design. And it’s why family heirlooms have such power. It’s not because they function better, but because we have a connection with them. And if that connection isn’t created over time, designers like Shin are countering disposable culture by building it right from the beginning.
SEE FOR YOURSELF: Hyerim Shin hyerimshin.com
One designer doing exactly this is Korean-born creative Hyerim Shin, whose Be My Mother series explores the emotional connection people can feel with inanimate objects. Her range of appliances is designed drawing inspiration from Japanese kawaii (cute) culture, with rounded corners and chubby legs, and engagement activities built in.

The super-wealthy want their privacy

here was a time when the ultrarich showed off their wealth, but people’s priorities have shifted over the years, according to David Forbes, head of private office at Savills, Pam Golding Properties’s strategic partner, who advises wealthy buyers. Now the top priorities for the ultra-wealthy are security and privacy. While the majority of homeowners still want what’s known as kerb appeal, there is a growing trend among the ultra-wealthy to hide from the public eye in an attempt to protect their homes from unwanted attention. The demand for this under-the-radar living has fuelled the rise of affluent neighbourhoods like Hidden Hills and Bell Canyon in California, US – all of which guard their privacy by refusing
Why employ a bond originator? Getting finance for the purchase of a new home is a daunting prospect, but using a bond originator can make the process much simpler IMAGE: ISTOCK
“A
Katherine Furstenburg, marketing manager, ooba, strongly recommends that homebuyers approach their originator as early in the process as possible, ideally before they begin house hunting. “This is in order to get buyers prequalified for finance upfront. The free prequalification service which originators provide to buyers, incorporates assisting buyers to access their credit report, assess their credit standing, calculate their affordability, compile the relevant paperwork, and provide them with a prequalified loan certificate.” Tim Johnson, sales director/ licensee, Seeff Dolphin Coast, adds that prequalification allows the seller, agent and buyer to
feel confident about signing the sale agreement as well as understanding the loan amount that would be available, thus providing for a deposit. Furstenburg says that the single biggest benefit to prospective homebuyers in using an originator lies in approval rates. “Ooba achieves bond approval for more than seven out of 10 bond applications processed, and this is significantly higher than the average bank approval rate.” Rademeyer notes that because originators have strong relationships with all the major banks, they are often able to negotiate a lower rate on your bond, which could save you thousands over the term of the home loan. “We submit the client’s bond application to multiple banks, including the client’s own bank, at the same time,” he says. “This reinforces competitiveness as banks are aware that where an originator submits an application there are also other banks competing for that business.” Turnaround
On a larger scale, architects have begun to experiment with ways to conceal entire buildings. One of the simplest ways to remove a home from public view is to put it underground, with basement dig-downs or even entire subterranean properties.

to appear on Google’s Street View. Analysts have dubbed these attempts to take entire communities out of the public gaze an “urbanscale non-disclosure agreement”. The wealthy are also using shell companies and other ownership structures to give property buyers anonymity, while the use of jamming signals to block location trackers such as GPS are being used to prevent attempts to follow individuals.
Now is the time to go through all your bank and card statements, monthly bills and payment records to find out exactly where you stand financially. This is not the time to avoid the issue if you have too much debt and too little income. Look at your situation honestly and take whatever action is necessary to improve it.

time is often quicker with an originator on board, too. “It is important to ensure that your bond originator is associated with your selling agent – and with all of the RSA banks,” says Johnson. Furstenburg says, “When one knows about the benefits of using an originator, coupled with the fact that the service is absolutely free, it’s easy to see that it’s a win-win situation for any buyer!”

Landlords should know eviction act
T
he current challenging economic circumstances have not only had an effect on those wanting to own property, they have also impacted many tenants and landlords within the residential market, says Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO, RE/MAX of Southern Africa. “Some landlords may find themselves in the situation where their tenant is no longer able to pay their monthly rent. However, landlords cannot simply evict the tenant as they are protected by the Prevention of Illegal Eviction from and Unlawful Occupation of Land Act, No. 19 of 1998, also known as the PIE Act,” says Goslett. “The act applies to the occupation of premises
which constitute a dwelling, which in the case of a landlord and tenant relationship would be the residential property in an urban area. The reason that the act was introduced was to ensure that tenants were protected from being unlawfully evicted from the property. It is important to note, however, that while the act aims to prevent wrongful eviction, it does not mean that the tenant cannot be evicted, merely that the correct procedure needs to be adhered to during the process.” It’s imperative that any homeowner or investors who wish to let out a property, familiarise themselves with the PIE Act, along with the numerous procedures it advocates for the lawful dealing of a defaulting tenant.
Domestic and commercial entities key to sustainability
H
aving an environmentally aware society starts in the home. That’s according to Lisa Reynolds, sustainability development director, Saint-Gobain, a leader in the habitat and construction market. “It is our responsibility as parents to teach our children to be environmentally aware, and demonstrate practical ways of making a difference to the planet starting in our own homes,” says Reynolds. “Teach kids that littering is forbidden, to use water sparingly, to turn off lights and electrical appliances not in use, and implement basic recycling practices so that everyone in the home makes an active contribution to the process.” But she says while households can make a
difference en masse, industry needs to make the biggest contribution to sustainability, and erode the age-old mindset of purely driving profitability. “The environment must be a priority, businesses must implement sustainable practices, which will, in the long-run, result in major financial savings and improve their bottom line,” she adds. Sustainability in South Africa is certainly making significant strides to catch up with commonplace practices employed across the globe. In 2011, energy efficiency for buildings was legislated. Every five years the standards are redrafted to increase the requirements, with the long-term vision as per the National Development Plan, for a zero-carbonemission building standard by 2030.

Things that make a difference
The scent: use oil burners in your favourite fragrance – not only when you have guests! Transfer your bath/shower toiletries into attractive dispensers for everyday use. Put normal furniture into your bathroom rather than functional “bathroom” items.
S
pring has sprung, and we’re heading into more cheerful, sun-filled days. Does your house have that slightly dreary, unloved look and feel? There are some quick, easy and inexpensive things you can do or add, which prompt a doubletake when you enter a room. Take your bathroom, for instance. Why not get rid of those bathmats and put in a bright, thick pile or exotic carpet runner? It’s easy to find a machine washable one, and it adds colour and patterns to your bathroom. Second-hand shops are a treasure trove of potential decor items, for a fraction of the price of new items. Even if you’re not the thrift shop type, hunt down some large framed mirrors – or even picture frames, and replace glass with mirrors. They bring light and cheer into a dark corner or room, and it’s quick and easy to gild the frame if you need to. Metal always adds glam, so dip into a pot of metallic paint to convert standard table legs into silver, or give your wooden chairs pewter backs. Don’t overdo the glitz, but here and there, it adds a sense of luxury.
Forgo flowers and use fruit as decor. Fill a glass bowl with your choice of fruit – anything from lemons, to the bright colours of apples and oranges. And don’t put them in the traditional spot, like the kitchen, but put them instead in the lounge or TV lounge. Change the lampshades – at least one or two. Not only can they dress up the space, but, cleverly chosen, they can also alter the lighting in the room.

Texture spells luxury. Use inexpensive accessories like faux throws, velvets or silks, and consider rich blues, reds and aubergines for a sultrier look. This is as workable in a lounge as it is in your bedroom – forgo the throw or blanket at the edge of the bed and go for a bed runner in a tactile fabric or texture. It doesn’t have to be practical, just sumptuous. Cushions: change the covers, and make sure they’re large and plump. And if you’re feeling particularly brave, trim the legs off your coffee table to alter its height, paint a single, dull piece of furniture in the room a statement colour, and swop out dreary doorknobs on cabinets for more ornate ones.
G
oing to the gym shouldn’t feel like a chore, nor should it break your budget. Enter GO Health, which opened a Durban North branch in June. Q: How did your business start? A: GO Health was founded in 2014 by Justin Williamson, Ian Jamieson and Rory Sweetlove. The GO Health team aim to provide cost-effective health club memberships that embrace technology and deliver true value for money. We opened our Durban North branch in June this year. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: We choose our club locations quite carefully, situating them in prime locations that make it easy for our members to pop in at convenient times. Our Durban North premises are perfectly located for our members, as they’re situated along a main road – Adelaide Tambo Drive. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Our team are always on the lookout for great premises that could be the home of our next club. In line with our operating principles, all of our clubs must be at least 2,000m2. When we spotted this space, we knew it would be a great home for our Durban North club. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: Our location makes it easy for our members to pop in when they’re either on their way to work in the mornings, or on their way home. Our members also enjoy panoramic ocean views while they’re working out. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We’re surrounded by restaurants, shops and offices, which makes this area a popular spot to visit for both
visitors to and residents of Durban North and surrounding suburbs. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: Currently, there are approximately 500 members that access the club daily. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: At the moment, we’re enjoying our Durban North space, but as a company, we prioritise our expansion plans. We’re currently planning to launch more than 30 new branches within the next few years. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Technology is our differentiator and we currently offer the best health club technology solutions in the country. That’s why we empower our members to track their health and activities both within and outside of the gym, using our MyWellness Key technology, mobile application and in-gym kiosks. Of course, our website helps with that too, as users can sign up online, check our class timetables and catch up on news about our expansion plans. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Technology is by far our most popular feature. Added to that, our members really enjoy our functional training zones and our group exercise classes. It’s here that our members can motivate each other and enjoy a great workout, while being led by a professional instructor. We offer group cycling, yoga, Pilates, boot camp, and a wide range of other classes to suit your exercise plan.

About the area WORDS: LEA JACOBS
T
he suburb of La Lucia has practically exploded in recent years and the area now features a range of homes including freehold and sectional title as well as those on estates. There is ongoing demand for property in this gorgeous part of Durban and this is reflected in the number of sales recorded. In the past 12 months, there have been 145 registrations at the deeds office, with a collective value of approximately R491m. At this stage, the average price for a freehold property is around R3,6m and sectional title units average R3,2m. Although you may think that the price of property here would exclude younger buyers, this is not the case. Lightstone statistics indicate that 43% of recent buyers were aged between 36 and 49. Likewise, 35% of stable owners fall into the same age bracket. Part of this suburb’s attraction lies in its convenient location. It is minutes away from the many office parks that
dot the La Lucia Ridge and is close to Gateway Theatre of Shopping and the delights that Umhlanga has to offer. It’s also relatively close to King Shaka International Airport. However, the fact that some properties on the ridge have spectacular sea views and that there are actual beachfront properties, undoubtedly adds to the desire to live here. There are a number of good schools that service this area, including Crawford Schools La Lucia, Danville Park Girls’ High School, Northlands Girls’ High and Northwood. And given that Durban is practically a stone’s throw away, the various private schools within the city are also a viable option. The area is home to the La Lucia Mall which offers a wide variety of shops and upmarket boutiques. There are also a number of terrific restaurants including the wellknown Italian eatery, Al Firenze.
THINGS TO DO:

Agent commentary Q: What continues to draw buyers to the area? A: Buyers are mainly drawn to this bustling suburb thanks to its family-orientated feel, and its abundance of highly secure estates stretching from along the ridge to the tranquil bowl below. The many upmarket estates in the area offer practicality combined with a sense of security. The area offers a wide choice of property including an array of high-end homes that feature magnificent, opulent finishes. The suburb has broad appeal and there are apartments, simplexes, duplexes and grand old homes available. An added bonus is the area’s proximity to major arterial routes, schools, hospitals and shopping malls.
Q: What do you love about the area? A: I personally love the suburb of La Lucia! I mean, what is there not to love? Not only is it centrally situated and close to the beach and both government and private schools, but you also have the lovely La Lucia Mall right on your doorstep. Shopping is made easy with loads of parking and even a beautiful park where you can take your kids for some fun in the sun. Nearby service stations, library, vet and great restaurants are just the cherry on top for this sought-after, upmarket suburb. What more does one need for easy and enjoyable living?
Q: Why would you invest in a property in La Lucia? A: La Lucia is a sanctuary on the North Coast. It is well positioned between Durban and Ballito with close proximity to Umhlanga, Durban North on the M4, and the N2. The leafy suburb is home to some of the most picturesque drives on the coast, and boasts some of the most magnificent homes on this section of our pristine coastline. This village is well protected by reputable security companies and some of the finest schools are either within its borders, or are a short drive away. As far as I’m concerned, this is the place to live if you want your real estate to grow in value.
