Howick
Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: ANDRÉ FIORE
IMAGES: STEPHEN PILBROUGH
L
ocated just off the N3 about 88km inland from Durban, Howick may seem quiet at first glance, but there’s a lot more to the area. Set in a sheltered hollow, Howick is known for its waterfalls, with the 100m Howick Falls in the centre of the town, and many tributaries of the Umgeni River tumbling down gorges nearby. Surrounding Howick are nature reserves, including Karkloof and Umgeni Valley, as well as the Midmar Dam and the KZN Midlands. While there’s plenty to do in the surrounding areas, the town itself offers everything from rock climbing near the falls, hiking and mountain biking, to art exhibitions, golf, bowls, tennis and sailing.
Known for its collectables shops, Howick is a great place for antiques, arts and crafts. Foodies are in for a treat as a number of great eateries as well as weekly markets, respected butcheries, cheese makers and a chocolatier can be found in the area.
PLACES TO STAY:
Howick is reputed to have one of the best climates in South Africa, and has become a popular choice for retirees because of its many retirement developments and wide range of ownership options. It also boasts numerous medical and care facilities including a private hospital and many private health practitioners.
DINE OUT:
Howick took its name from the British Lord Howick in the 1850s, but gained greater international recognition in 1996 when Nelson Mandela was awarded The Freedom of Howick. Mandela was arrested in a nearby road in 1962. A little-known fact about Howick, and nearby Karkloof, is that it’s thought to be the location of the first manned flight in the world, with John Goodman Household flying a self-made glider in 1871 and in 1875 in the area. Statistics about the distance and altitude differ, but all seem to indicate that he outdid the flights made by aviation pioneers Otto Lilienthal and the Wright brothers.

I moved to Howick around 14 years ago to expand my business and haven’t looked back. It still has that country feel, but has all the city convenience of banks, doctors and shops as well as the very good Howick Primary and High schools where my children were educated. BRUCE RUDLING, RESIDENT
Agent Insight Local property experts gives us the inside scoop on Howick.
What attracts buyers to Howick?
How would you spend a weekend day in Howick?
What makes a property in Howick a good investment?
It has an amazing sense of community, and people genuinely care about each other. The climate is good – summers aren’t too hot and the winters aren’t too cold. It’s also home to excellent medical facilities. Local Howick schools are well staffed, well equipped and well supported. All the private Midlands heritage schools are also within an easy reach. Looking for a good quality of life? What could be better than Howick?
I would take a walk from one of the exceptional B&Bs along Amber Avenue, lined with giant London planetrees, then down to the Umgeni River where I can take a walk along the edge below some of the most gorgeous properties. A short cut past the junior school and down Harvard Street brings you to the heart of Howick, with bistros and touristy shops, and ends at the Howick Falls.
Howick has become the hub of the Midlands, serving the commercial farming sector, commercial business and industrial needs, as well as a range of peoplecentred services, and offers housing options from one-bedroom starter homes to large family homes. There’s demand for homes across the price spectrum and a constant upward movement as more people filter into the housing market.

My business neighbourhood F Fuzzy Collection at The Stables Lifestyle Market provides a diverse range of clothing for people who aren’t mall shoppers WORDS: TIVANIA MOODLEY IMAGES: SUPPLIED
azila Ariff’s 25-years in the clothing industry gave her the expertise to open the retro and trendy store, Fuzzy Collection. She tells us more about her business. Q: How did your business start? A: I’ve always loved working with fashion and the various fabrics and designs, and had a flair for putting ranges together that suit people’s lifestyles. I decided to start my own small clothing business that is different from normal retail stores, but which is more rewarding. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: T he market is situated near the old rugby stadium and the Newmarket Stables. The market provides a really arty venue, with ample safe parking, that caters to an eclectic market. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was referred by the bookstore owner who operates in the stall next to mine, and who has been at the market for over 20 years. Another stall owner, Kevin Ellis, who runs a vintage store, also suggested that I would be a perfect fit for the market.
and enjoy the diverse range of clothes I provide. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: A bookstore and a sports store. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Shop rentals vary according to the size of the stalls, but the average stall pays about R2,500 per month. We only trade two evenings a week and on Sundays. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: T he foot traffic isn’t as big as in boutiques and malls, so it’s difficult to estimate. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: T here are no expansion plans at the moment. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: I don’t sell online, but I do advertise there. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: My dresses sell very well as they are simple and classic.
SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he market attracts people that aren’t mall shoppers. They want personal attention

Property in your will Make sure your home is properly dealt with in the event of your death WORDS: CANDICE BOTHA
IMAGE: ISTOCK
I’m a great believer that wills should be simple documents and that the testator shouldn’t try to rule from the grave GERALD BURNE, DURBAN FIRM: BURNE AND BURNE ATTORNEYS
H
ave you ever considered what would become of your home if you died? Making clear provision for what should happen to your home in your will is important. Although a will seems like a simple document, each family’s circumstances and the various scenarios that could occur in the event of the homeowner’s death need to be carefully considered. Attorney Gerald Burne, Durban firm: Burne and Burne Attorneys – specialists in drafting wills and winding up estates of the deceased – stresses the importance of having an up-to-date will. “I’m a great believer that wills should be simple documents and that the testator (the person creating the will) shouldn’t try to rule from the grave,” he says. “Accordingly, I believe that the home should be left to the beneficiary outright with no stipulation that the beneficiary be able to live in the home after death. The beneficiary can make up his (or her or their) mind when the time comes. I simply believe
that the testator should create the conditions during his lifetime to enable the beneficiary to live in the home should he choose to do so.” Dying intestate, without a will, is hugely problematic. Assuming the death of a married adult, the surviving spouse will inherit one half of the estate and a child’s share of the other half or R250,000, whichever is greater, if they were married in community of property. Burne explains that problems arise as the property has to be transferred into the names of all the heirs, and if the children are still minors, they can’t borrow money. “Accordingly, unless the mortgage bond can be paid off, the minors will have to apply through their guardian to obtain a loan to pay off the deceased’s loan. Banks usually don’t lend to minors, and so there will be a mighty problem.” Having your will drafted by a qualified attorney is the best way to ensure that your family’s circumstances are considered and that these problems don’t arise.
