must admit that this year started off a little too gloomy for my liking – the rand is weaker, there are murmurs of a recession, and we’re experiencing a severe drought. It points one way – maybe 2016 is the year when we must all pull together as communities. While I was listening to a radio news report this week, I was delighted to hear of the extent to which this is already happening through Operation Hydrate. The operation, started by a group of volunteers who deliver water to drought-stricken areas, is testament to what can be achieved when people work together. Driven mainly through instant messaging, they aim to deliver 1,5m litres of drinking water to affected areas. This is proof that every little bit helps.

he contemporary urban decor at S43 makes you feel like you could be in Malá Strana in Prague or a wine bar in SoHo, except this is Durban meets industrial chic with Tarantino booths, banana palms and spectacular cocoon-like lights with on-trend squirrel cage bulbs. Burgers for vegetarians include the Gorgonzola, rocket, and onion marmalade burger and the shiitakeenriched patty, sauteed mushrooms, Emmental cheese and truffle mayo (Triple Mushroom Mania). The Greek lamb burger, feta-enriched lamb patty with minted tzatziki, chargrilled aubergine and roasted peppers, was wolfed down at our table and enjoyed with a side order of beer-battered onion rings. Yup, they do have Banting burgers served on a roasted brown mushroom instead of a boring bun. The most popular burger is The Durban – a beef patty (a mixture of chuck and rump) with spiced pineapple, smoky bacon, mature cheddar, and dollops of that groovy pink ’70s island-style dressing.

he Coop opened its doors in November and has been met with great reviews since. But who is Fast Eddie, and why is he so wise?

As the head feather of The Coop, Eddie often shares his favourite picks from the menu. He likes to get people down to visit The Coop for a good time and enjoy the laid-back atmosphere. “It makes my cock-a-doodle day to see people popping in to visit!”

Fast Eddie is also a big fan of his home city. He recommends that visitors start the day on one of the city’s beautiful beaches. “Then make sure to hit one of Durban’s markets to see a few of the crafty delights our talented Durbanites have created – support local and head to I Heart Market. While you’re there, head up to the top of the Moses Mabhida Stadium in the SkyCar – it’s the best view in town. And then, of course, head to The Coop on Mackeurtan for a tasty lunch on the deck.”

The Coop isn’t just another takeaway spot, though. “The brand concept and interior design was conceptualised by Chisel Design Studio who aimed to create a space that was not a regular takeaway spot, but something with character. he aQuelle Midmar Mile holds an esteemed place in the heart of many Durbanites, and not just swimmers. It’s an annual family fun day out that sees many people setting up braai fires and camping chairs to support their favourite athletes.
your distance in small increments each time. Jane says swimmers can incorporate weight-training into their exercise programme. “Strengthening your shoulders and legs will help give you a more powerful pull and kick.”
Your first mile
While distance covered during training is important, so is making sure you’re breathing correctly. Jane reminds her clients to focus on their breathing during training. “The last thing you want during the race is to get flustered and not breathe properly. That’s when you get more tired and stressed during the swim, especially with so many people around you. It’s also important to ensure that you have a comfortable costume. Test it out during your training. You don’t want to be fiddling with a costume while you’re in a race.”
But swimming the Midmar Mile is no silly feat. A mile equates to just over a kilometre and a half – not exactly a little summertime splash in the pool. It’s recommended that swimmers start their training early, with the Midmar Mile website listing an eleven-week basic training programme from start to finish.

Using a combination of gym workouts and swimming sessions can help you swim the distance required. Local personal trainer Jane Kilian of GI Jane, advises her clients who are keen on swimming the mile to start training a few months before. “It’s best to give yourself adequate time to get your fitness and strength levels up.”

Jane says, “To get swimming fit you need to swim. Just as you need to cycle in order to be cycling fit, your swimming fitness comes from swimming.” So head out to your local swimming pool as often as you can to prepare for swimming the Midmar Mile, and work on increasing

Spice things up Everything you need to know about SA’s favourite sauce – peri-peri
S
outh Africans aren’t afraid of getting a little hot under the collar, especially when it comes to our cooking, and we all love a good peri-peri sauce. Here are some facts about this Portuguese staple: • The main ingredient for a peri-peri sauce is the periperi chilli also known as the African bird’s eye chilli. • When Portuguese explorers first arrived on the east coast of Africa, they discovered the African bird’s eye chilli which the locals called peri-peri. • Only the terroir of south-east Africa can produce the African bird’s eye chilli. • The smaller the chilli the hotter it will actually be. • A chilli’s heat comes from the amount of capsaicin it contains. • When capsaicin is ingested, the sensory nerves of your mouth and throat send a message to the brain which increases your heart rate and level of endorphins. • Peri-peri chillies are rich
in vitamin A and C. • One of the spiciest chillies, the periperi chilli, has a rating of 170,000 on the Scoville scale – a measurement of pungency (spicy heat). • In 1987 Fernando Duarte and his friend Robert Brozin visited a restaurant called Chickenland in Joburg. They were so inspired by the taste of the peri-peri chicken that they bought the place, and Nandos, home to South Africa’s favourite peri-peri chicken, was born.

Q: How did your business start? A: I was offered pop-up space at Windermere Centre in 2013, as I was known for curating the Homegrown Design Fair for the East Coast Radio House and Garden Show, as well as my artwork. I loved the name Anthology as it means to collect and gather... which I love to do. It was a daunting project to fill an entire empty grocery store, yet somehow the concept just worked from the beginning.

The unit will develop an interdisciplinary research platform to identify issues and solutions to urban real estate investment, finance, economics and management problems in Africa.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: The best thing about Windermere is that it has many schools, businesses, and flats in the area. It’s a very exciting neighbourhood in Durban right now. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Good value for money. : What is your shop footprint? Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: At the moment we are focusing on our newly renovated flagship store which we want to establish as a shopping destination in Durban. If we expand, it will be to take our concept to Cape Town, Joburg and beyond. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Just active on social media at the moment. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: We started our own clothing label which is doing really well. Our long shirt caftan is the most popular.
Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Actually, I didn’t choose it and probably would not have picked Windemere Centre had the opportunity not presented itself. But I found it to have a lovely community spirit and, despite being outdated, was well run and supported. I think our shop was an exciting addition to the centre, and our pop-up was part of a major reshuffle to renovate the centre and introduce Woolworths Food.
This is according to Carol Reynolds, area principal, Pam Golding Properties Durban Coastal, who says the property market in this growth node is buoyant, driven by huge demand from local buyers and up-country investors. “The market is seeking security, convenience and lifestyle, and this is exactly what developers in Umhlanga
and Sibaya are delivering. Pam Golding Properties is currently marketing five developments in this area.” Pam Golding Properties has released a development in Bellamont Road in Umdloti, comprising four luxury homes in a private enclave. Reynolds says, “Position is everything in real estate, and a secure luxury development with top-quality finishes in a prime address with panoramic sea views, is always a safe investment.” The new development – called 90a Bellamont – consists of four 500m2 villas, priced at R12,4m. Two have already been sold.

A: Our insight into the plans for the centre renewal and the support we experienced as a pop-up made it clear that this was a great place to establish Anthology as a permanent store and creative brand, so we signed a lease. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: I love the community family feeling, and the update has transformed the centre and it is attracting new customers. Free parking, security and good foot traffic are important factors in retail, and as much as I love the art hubs like Station Drive and Morrison Street, I sometimes find the general public does not always support these spaces as well as they should. I like that I just focus on my store and service, and not endless marketing drives to bring visitors in.

London man is offering to rent two rooms in his Grade ll listed house between Brick Lane and Spitalfields Market for as much as his “perfect tenants” can afford. The landlord, Rupert Hunt, posted his ad on spareroom.com, the site he founded. If you want to rent the house, however, you have to be willing to be filmed for his YouTube channel. He says on the Spareroom advert: “I’ve decided to film my journey to show people the process, and to spread the word that living with the right people beats living
alone.” This hasn’t put people off – he’s had more than 3,000 enquiries. Hunt wrote on his Spareroom page: “I’m offering the rooms on a ‘pay what you can afford’ basis. I’m far more interested in finding the right people to share with, than maximising my rent (and market rent round here would price some people out). So if you’re my perfect flatmate and happen to be volunteering and can only afford £100 (about R2,350) per month, I’d sooner take you over someone who can pay full whack, but who isn’t quite right.”
