I
’m always fascinated by April Fools’ Day. It’s the one day of the year when you can’t trust anything you read, no matter how reputable the source, or what anyone says. As a young waitron, I was once asked to go out and look for a specific bottle of wine for a VIP customer who would be coming in later. I searched all over before someone took pity on me and told me that the bottle of wine I was looking for didn’t exist. With this April Fools’ Day falling on Easter Sunday, I can only imagine the hilarious mischief already going on. One thing you can trust today, however, is the content of this weekend’s edition of Neighbourhood!

Red Bull is no stranger to hosting spectacular music events in the City of Gold. In recent years, it’s put on the Red Bull Culture Clash and Red Bull Music Academy Weekender, both of which were hugely successful and which did an incredible job of showcasing local talent. However, the upcoming six-day Red Bull Music Festival takes that concept to a whole
Taking place across nine venues, the festival will be held primarily in Newtown and Braamfontein, with one Saturday event also in Soweto. One of the undeniable highlights of the festival is set to be its first event: an intimate music session by two of South Africa’s most exciting young musicians and vocalists, Langa Mavuso and Zoe Modiga. In 2017, Langa was
featured in the Red Bull Beyond the Sound series, and this year his set with Zoe will pay tribute to South Africa’s rich heritage. They will also perform renditions of their current songs. If you’re more interested in seeing familiar names, you’ll be glad to know that the festival will also feature South African hard hitters such as AKA, Oskido and Shekhinah. On top of all this, the festival will also host the first South African performance by international superstar, Skepta. Whether you’re all about reggae, dance music, electro, techno, rap, or hip hop, there’s a Red Bull Music Festival event to get you moving and appreciating South African talent. f you’ve kept your ear to the ground (or, rather, to the trees) in the health food world, you’ll know that the Moringa plant has been gaining popularity as a new “superfood”. Richard Gaisie, coowner, Akan Natural Moringa, tells us all about this wonder plant. Q: What is Moringa? A: The Moringa oleifera tree is native to the foothills of the Himalayan mountains in India and regions of Africa. Its preferred regions for growth are subtropical climates and it’s seen as a plant-based multivitamin with multiple medicinal uses.

or Jono Kirby and Malcolm Hozack, the duo behind Melville’s Hell’s Kitchen and La Santa Muerte, opening Lonely Hearts Club, their new tapas bar and restaurant on 7th Street, marks another footprint in their favourite suburb. “We both love Melville and feel it has a European sense to it in terms of the street culture,” says Jono. “It’s away from the big shopping malls and so it gives residents and visitors to the area the freedom to be creative.” The Lonely Hearts Club opened quietly towards the end of February and is a restaurant first and bar second. Jono describes it as an “upmarket version of Hell’s Kitchen”, appealing to the same crowd but offering something a bit quieter and more sophisticated. The menu is still a work in progress, but as a tapas restaurant, the major focus is on sharing. Chefs Rayno Adlam and Duncan Sheedy have created a menu of simple but tasty dishes including expected staples like patatas bravas, as well as unexpected delights such as grilled artichoke hearts, roast bone marrow with baby onions, tomato olive chutney, burnt hollandaise and toasted ciabatta, and pan-fried salmon with
charred bok choy and miso butter jus – all cooked in a Spanish charcoal oven. While tapas are great for a festive evening, there’s often the feeling that you’re never full on a few shared small plates. For that reason, small dishes are affordably priced, so you can easily make up a full shared meal. Interior design is stylishly retro, with parquet wooden floors, heavy wood panels and dark green marble, contrasted with edgy brickwork and high-gloss black ceilings, and almost all the interior elements were designed and made by local artisans. The inside seats 60 people and there’s also an outside courtyard featuring a giant olive tree that seats 24, as well as a separate bar where you can also order tapas to enjoy with a beer or glass of wine. Like the interior design, music is carefully thought through. “The music policy is strictly nothing post1980,” says Jono. This means you can expect an eclectic mix of blues, jazz, soul and swing. Future plans are to feature live performances from local artists – making this the perfect setting for a fun, festive night out.
Q: What are its benefits? A: The leaves of the Moringa tree contain 90 nutrients and have naturally occurring vitamins, minerals, amino acids, antioxidants and anti-inflammatory compounds. Young and old people can benefit from it as it also contains essential amino acids/proteins that the body cannot produce and which we have to get from our food. According to the ancient Indian medicinal system of Ayurveda, it can be used against 300 diseases and has been scientifically shown to be an effective natural immune booster. It can also be used for weight loss, as

it’s a natural appetite suppressant. The benefits can sound a little too good to be true, so we always encourage people to research for themselves – plus we have more information on our website. Q: What are the best ways for people to take Moringa? A: It’s not known to have any sideeffects, but it can be potent and works on your system quite quickly, so we suggest starting with half a teaspoon before moving onto the daily recommended dosage of a teaspoon. Start by adding Moringa powder to your daily smoothie, yoghurt, porridge, soups or stews – but don’t cook with it, rather just add when serving, in order to preserve the rich nutrient content. You can also get single serving sachets for travelling, Moringa veggie capsules and a range of Moringa teas. Although it’s a food, we would, of course, advise those who are currently on medication to consult their physician before taking Moringa.

ocated above the popular Thava Indian Restaurant, Thava Venue opened its doors in October last year. The venue accommodates up to 200 people and hosts events including family functions, birthday parties, weddings and corporate functions. General manager Vibin Varghese tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: Thava Venue is an offshoot of Thava Indian Restaurant which opened its doors in Norwood in 2010. The gap in the market and requests from our regular patrons prompted the decision to open the venue. We also have food festivals once a month and the restaurant was too small to cater for the numbers and so it made sense to convert the upstairs space into a stand-alone venue with its own separate kitchen, bar and sound system.

andown is the residential and commercial heart of Sandton – where professionals and their families work, shop and play – between the Sandton CBD and the affluent
suburb of Morningside. Just 20 years ago, the landscape was more “country”, with residents living on large plots of land and keeping horses. Now it’s given over to expansive commercial

with Alex, so they started looking for an apartment together. Cindy works in Sandton, but her daughter Layyah’s primary school is in Observatory, so she initially started looking closer to that side of the city. After showing them around 20 apartments in six months, their agent suggested a place in Sandown. “I wasn’t convinced,” says Cindy. “I was trying to stay close to Layyah’s school, but the agent said we should just take a look. When we saw the value that we’d get for our money in Sandown, I just accepted that I’d have to deal with some traffic getting her to school in the morning.” For R10,000 per month, they now rent a three-bedroom, two-bathroom duplex, with a patio and a large lounge in a secure complex. In May last year they moved in and Cindy says that they couldn’t be happier.
Schooling
Cindy is considering moving Layyah to a school closer to home, but she wants to make her decision carefully so that her daughter is close to good high schools. “If I’m going to disrupt her like this, I want to do it only once,” she says. “High school will be the determining factor because I want a natural flow from her primary school into that environment.” She has started considering schools in the area but hasn’t decided on any yet. However, with a number of leading schools close by in just about every direction, she’s spoilt for choice. Grayston Preparatory School and Sandown High School are practically on her doorstep. There’s also the Curro Academy Sandown nearby. Slightly further afield are Rivonia Primary School, Crawford Sandton, Redhill School, St David’s Marist

Cindy and Alex have Sandton City nearby, and they like to visit for shopping and dining. “We really like Walnut Grove,” says Cindy. “It’s a cool, kid-friendly restaurant.” She also seeks out restaurants with childminders and play areas that can keep her daughter occupied. She lists Ri’stretto Morningside as her favourite among these. “They let kids make their own pizzas,” she says. They also often go to Mushroom Farm Park, a sprawling parkland in the heart of the city, with jungle gyms, a sandpit and even a riverside

When they’re in the mood for something a little more suburban, Cindy and Alex often head to Greenside, but they also enjoy spending time at home. “We entertain a lot, and my family have visited me more often in the last few months that we’ve been here than they’ve visited me in my entire life!”

Cindy says one of the best things about living in Sandown is that she’s close to everything. “My whole family live on the West Rand, and when I used to travel from that side, I didn’t have any spare time for anything. Now that I live here, I can dash out to the shops, go to a restaurant or even go for a walk in the evening,” she says. “It’s not possible to put a price on the quality of life that we have now.”

I
ncreasingly, there are bold and beautiful tiles available which form artworks in rooms, or which, if laid differently, add astonishing colour, designs and patterns. They become your stamp. “Tile trends for the year ahead will be taking their cue from the fashion catwalks – exciting bold graphics, more textures, faux naturals and the colour palettes that range from ultra bright to dark and dramatic. Bold and retro are the keywords to tiles this year,” says Johnny Lamprecht from Bathroom Bizarre.

Hadeda is a Joburg company specialising in decorative encaustic cement tiles (also known as Moroccan, Victorian, Spanish, patchwork or hydraulic tiles) as well as handpainted Mexican Talavera tiles. Owner Des Armstrong says there’s been a noticeable increase in clients who want something different and beautiful. “Some only want a little splashback, a row of handmade tiles in a bathroom, while others plan an entire wall or fountain. But they want a certain exclusivity.” She says black and white is a trend today – as is grey – but it’s been around a while, and is likely to last long into the future. “It’s what you do with it that counts.”
Black, white and hexagonal Hexagonal, or hex, tiles were hugely popular in the ’20s and ’40s on floors and in a variety of simple colours. Today, hex tiles are making a big comeback on walls and floors. Johnny says, “They’ve been gaining
popularity for a while now, largely due to their organic honeycomb shape. The difference with modern hex tiles is that they’re available in a variety of colours, textures and materials. Since designers have started embracing this shape, so has the variety of sizes, colours and textures grown to accommodate tiles that would suit virtually any decor style.” He suggests grouting of a similar colour for a more subdued effect or a contrasting colour to make the tile shape pop. “If your choice of hex tiles already has a design on it, this dictates how it’s laid. But in plain colours, they open up a whole world of creative layout options.”
Tiles with a twist
Jasmin Kraneveldt of Bathroom Bizarre says mosaic tiles are making a huge comeback, specifically monochromatic and geometric patterned versions. She also says that clients are now thinking out of the box and adding tiles to places where they previously wouldn’t dare. “That feature bedroom wall which is usually painted or wallpapered can be tiled – so can a headboard. The use of dark floral tiles, for example, can add a subtle, yet modern and romantic accent to the overall decor composition.” Des adds that how you use patterned tiles is up to you, and the more fun you have the better! “Whether you mix bright colours or go for a black and white palette, let the tiles dominate or create a vivid focal point.”
