innerTimeStories launched in Joburg at the end of March and since then has been delighting local audiences with its utterly unique six-course dining and entertainment experience. The first time in the southern hemisphere, this acclaimed pop-up restaurant has been hugely popular in cities like London, Toronto and Dubai, but this year set up residence at the Faircity Quatermain Hotel in Morningside. But what exactly is it? Imagine a tiny (3D projected) chef called Le Petit Chef who takes you on an immersive two-hour dining adventure through the Silk Route of Asia, following in the footsteps of explorer Marco Polo. The spice-infused dining experience starts with a glass of bubbles and you can also choose wine pairing, as you sit at communal tables of eight and twelve ( just 52 guests per show).

I
n an attempt to rejuvenate the inner city, mayor Herman Mashaba has begun a programme of expropriating abandoned and neglected buildings for conversion into residential accommodation which will help ease demand for housing. Mashaba has identified more than 500 buildings to be inspected and considered for this purpose in a R200m project, with many of them located in the inner city. While these conversions will address the pressure of urban migration and demand for affordable accommodation, corporate conversions and refurbishments continue to create and link nodes within the Joburg CBD with the aim of creating a functioning, liveable city in the mould of New York. According to Alfonso Botha – who has recently redeveloped The Franklin, an apartment hotel building which straddles Newtown and the inner city – the beauty of the current spate of redevelopment of the CBD is that many of the shell buildings awaiting conversion or refurbishment are available at lower prices than the prime real estate of Sandton or Rosebank. The hotel faces a precinct FNB is rejuvenating through its Bank City concept. The aim is to link properties in the area with FNB’s newly renovated corridor, through to the Mining District and its historical attractions, such as the Mandela

Ultimately, the idea is a revitalised inner city with retail tenants, services, residential and temporary accommodation and a thriving nightlife. Botha plans to renovate his extension of the Bank City precinct with restaurants and entertainment venues, a coffee shop as well as retail and services outlets to cater to the business clientele moving through Bank City every day. In a city currently known for being deserted after dark, such redevelopment will be a game changer.

You won’t know what’s on the menu beforehand but know that awardwinning executive chef Tristan Latouf will be sure to surprise and delight you, with vegetarian, vegan, Halaal and Kosher-friendly options available, too. Imagine decadent flavours combined with cutting-edge 3D technology, visual artistry and theatrical storytelling. The mood, music, table patterns, props and decorations all change with the chapters of the story. For example, in the first scene Le Petit Chef sails away from Marseilles by folding a paper into a little boat, while the first course is served in a suitcase. It’s all about activating all five senses as you sip and taste, smell, see, listen and touch. Belgian artists Filip Sterckx and Antoon Verbeeck teamed up with concept creator and writer Nadine
While the struggles of retail tenants at Maboneng are well documented, Botha says once critical scale has been achieved and more business drivers are in place, Maboneng will bounce back, and the interlinking precincts will be able to feed off each other. “Bank City has 11,000 people coming in and out every day, while Melrose Arch has around 3,000. This puts into perspective the potential for what is happening in the inner city,” Botha says. With these heavyweights behind it, the Joburg inner city can only flourish, to the advantage of us all.

I
f you ever needed a reason to pay an extended visit to the Slanghoek valley, you can say a big thank you to the Louw family. Their family tree has deep roots in this impossibly scenic valley, which stretches north from Goudini to the low-water bridge that crosses the Breede River. They’ve farmed here since 1847, across seven generations, and yet still seem to have a giddy enthusiasm for the place as if they’d arrived just yesterday.

eer and Belgium: the two go hand in hand. That’s not surprising, when you consider that some of the country’s beers have a heritage stretching back 600 years. In fact, in the case of Leffe – one of the brands showcased at the Belgian Beer Café – that history starts with the monks in 1240. In spite of being well loved by beer drinkers around the world, Leffe and other brands like Hoegaarden (also showcased at the Belgian Beer Café, along with Stella Artois) have been enjoyed by South Africans for only a year or so. That’s why ABInBev decided to host the cafe, explains the company’s Melanie Nicholson. After all, the warmer weather is a siren call to open up a frosty, and since craft beer exploded the beer scene a few years ago, South Africans have become eager to try different types of brew. Nicholson adds that the beers are complemented by a special tapas-style menu of sharing plates designed by chef and restauranteur Rob Blaine. A Belgian cafe without traditional favourites like moules and frites would be unthinkable, while other options include thinly sliced rump and a picnic bowl complete with biltong and grapes, offset by an orange balsamic cream and feta spiked by preserved ginger. The best way to enjoy the beers, though, are with the taster dishes designed specifically to bring out their unique tasting notes: shrimp and
coriander and citrus pesto to enhance Hoegaarden’s signature coriander and orange flavour; parmesan biscuits topped with cherry tomatoes and fresh dill to emphasise Leffe’s full-bodied fruitiness; and five-spice and coriander seed meatballs speaking to the malty, crisp and refreshing taste of Stella. The Belgian Beer Café is open from 28 August to 29 September, and will feature special activations such as quiz nights and ladies’ book club evenings. Look out, too, for special highlights like ice cream theatre and glass engraving on these occasions.
Stop in for a wine tasting or a bite and chances are you’ll bump into some or other member of the clan. If you’re lucky it’ll be Attie, the elder son and winemaker. He’s the man responsible for the estate’s award-winning wines. This is chenin blanc country, and Opstal’s is hailed far and wide. The estate-label chenin blanc is certainly good, but it’s worth splashing out the extra on a bottle of the Carl Everson Single Vineyard Chenin Blanc, named for the man who first established Opstal as a premium wine producer. And there’s no better place to enjoy a bottle than on your private deck at one of the five cottages newly built
on the hillside above the cellar. Each is named for a character that has shaped the farm through the decades, and the cottages are a stylish, contemporary take on your typical farm getaway. Wooden floors and minimalist furniture define the spacious living area, where Dovre wood-burning stoves will keep any winter chills at bay. The open-plan kitchens are wellequipped for self-catering, although you’ll certainly want to enjoy a meal or two from chef PJ Lombard at the Opstal restaurant. That’s for lunchtime though. Come evening the large braai area on your private deck – with panoramic valley views – is where you’ll want to be cooking. And it’s on the deck you’ll find the pièce de résistance: wood-fired hot tubs that gaze out over the Slanghoek Valley. They take a while to warm up, so light them early for a soak before bed. The spacious en-suite bedrooms are kitted out with quality linen, so you’re assured of a good night’s sleep. The next morning, more Slanghoek adventures await.

Spring into action Spring-cleaning implies way more than a good airing of the beds. If you really want to feel the benefits, decluttering is everything. WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGES: SHUTTERSTOCK
A
quote which resonates is that of Angel Chernoff, life coach and co-author of the best-selling book 1,000 Little Things Happy, Successful People Do Differently, “When things aren’t adding up in your life, begin subtracting. Life gets a lot simpler when you clear the clutter that makes it complicated.” So, what’s that got to do with springcleaning? Plenty. Increasingly, globally, everybody is becoming aware that bombardment of the senses by technology, materialism, clutter, you name it, isn’t doing anybody any good. Use it or lose it – to somebody who can use it.
Clear your head
A clear head’s a great result of springcleaning. You don’t have to do it in a day, or even a week – put together a 30-day/ month spring-cleaning calendar, so you literally have no excuse about being “too busy” or “too tired”. Take your time, but make sure you stick to the daily task you’ve set yourself. Alma Dewar Richardson is Decluttering Momentum, and her mantra is “give away, pack away, throw away, tidy and clean”. For her, it’s important that spring-cleaning isn’t considered one person’s job. It’s both halves of a couple or every member of a family. If the mindset isn’t established, it’s difficult to sustain. She’s adamant about setting time limits. Quick ones, so you limit the thinking time. “Create a designated spot for donations to charity – set the timer for five minutes, everyone identifies five items of their own they wish to give away and meet back at the spot with the items. Bag them and stow them in the car for delivery.” And she thinks likewise about everything else in the home. “Create a packaway mindset – toys in the toybox, dirty clothes
in the laundry basket, clean clothes in the cupboard. To maintain a neat home going forward have a chores list – for everyone – which is fairly distributed and make sure that keeping the house a home is the whole family’s responsibility. Find a home for everything and have everything living in its home – take a deep breath, allocate rooms to everyone in the family and do a 15-minute pack-away blitz.” Isabelle de Grandpre is NEAT FREAK. She considers clutter an impediment to, well, just about everything, and spring-cleaning. She suggests you start this way, “Write down on separate pieces of paper a list of all the things you need to do in the home or office that would help you feel better about that space. This could be accumulated admin and filing that really needs to be sorted before the taxman finds you, or your dining room that has become the family’s dumping ground.”
Timetable
But it’s not good enough writing out what needs to be done, it also needs a timetable, otherwise the temptation to abandon ship before you’ve embarked is strong. “Even if you only do the assigned task for one hour a day, you’ll be amazed at the difference it makes.”
She suggests this:
• M onday: Decluttering and placing items into piles so you can deal with them. • Tuesday: You have undoubtedly awoken the dust mites, so start dusting, vacuuming and wiping (inside and on top). • Wednesday and Thursday: Go through and categorise the items in those piles. • Friday: Rearrange the items you’ve sorted through. • Saturday: Wash and launder where you can. • Sunday: Decorate – and buy yourself a bunch of flowers for the effort! “And note,” says De Grandpre, “When you’re going through the
scheduled tasks – which you can adjust to fit a weekend – do whatever it takes to stay motivated. If you love music, play it loud.”
Must-dos
She offers a few tips: No matter how obvious or simple they seem, don’t skip them. Spring-cleaning and decluttering requires a methodical approach. One of the big hurdles is sentimentality, and although you don’t need to throw feelings out the window, best get a firm grip on them. “Don’t hold on to things you know you will not need, haven’t looked at since your 21st birthday, never liked anyway – donate it to someone who may. If there are items to throw away, recycle. Before you start, find out where the nearest recycling depot is, and drop off as soon as you’re done… otherwise, somehow, things find their way back into the spaces,” De Grandpre says. “Prepare for your spring clean before you begin. There are ‘tools’ required – rubbish bags, labels and cleaning supplies. Have a good idea to whom you can donate items. Have empty boxes available or even containers for dividing up items in cupboards and drawers. If you don’t have what you need, you’re likely to get seriously frustrated and risk throwing in the towel,” she advises. “Label!” says De Grandpre. “It’s a huge help when you know just by looking at the container what’s in it. “Think out of the box about the layout of your spaces. Consider your options – move things around and try new configurations. You can always put it back where it was if it truly doesn’t work.” De Grandpre likes the idea of a bragging session. “Before you start on your spring clean, consider arranging a dinner with good friends for afterwards. This could be another motivation for you – you can’t go backwards because you’ve invited everyone round for a brag session.”

uburban enough to feel peaceful and convenient, Sunninghill also has a busy, city feel that allows ex-inner city lovers to feel not quite so out of place. A few months ago we spoke to Bianca Joynt about how she loved to visit Parktown North over weekends. When she recently swapped her tidy apartment in Morningside for a ground floor flat in Sunninghill, we knew she would give us a rundown of the area with fresh eyes as a brand-new resident.

Another great option for those with a spicier palate is Taste of India. A great tip here from Bianca is to order a few options and gather with friends at home for a casual midweek dinner. Chilli Lane allows residents to top up their shopping on the way home from work, with everything from groceries to wine to petrol and pet food.
“I’ve been in Sunninghill going on three months now, and, while having a friend just up the road really helps, the suburb already feels familiar to me,” says Joynt. “There’s a good mix of it all here – beautiful parks throughout are a major perk and get you outdoors without a great deal of travel. Lots of local pubs like Santi’s offer great, homely spaces for family and friends to gather and a very active running club for everyone balances it all out.”
Getting outdoors is easy in Sunninghill, with Rietfontein Nature Reserve just next door in Paulshof. Here you can enjoy long walks in a fresh breeze, as well as the birdlife and lush surrounds – a perfect way to end the weekend on a Sunday afternoon.
Sunninghill is full of options for the prospective buyer – with newer Summercon complexes for singles or flat-shares and slightly bigger but older spaces for new families. One thing is well known, however, in this tight economy, Sunninghill is the space to search for your very own home on a budget.
Schools If you needed any more convincing that Sunninghill is a great place to grow a family, here’s another reason: Sunninghill is school central! Tots can be sent to Sunninghill Park Nursery, Little Hearts Nursery School or Lifestyle Montessori – all well placed centrally in the suburb. Private school options in the area are the Anglican St Peter’s Colleges, Crawford Colleges and King David Sandton. Rivonia Primary is another very popular option – but be warned, prospective pupils must fall within the catchment area to be considered. Even the littlest of students have options here with Hugs and Kisses Educare Centre, which is well placed to accommodate a possible drop-off on the commute to the greater Sandton area. Sunninghill Preschool and Creche is directly in between Hugs and Kisses and Sunninghill Park Nursery, giving parents real breadth of choice when considering their baby’s first home away from home.

Take in some of our beautiful country’s history at Liliesleaf heritage site and teach the kids a little of South Africa’s journey to democracy. If that’s a little dry for you, then wet your whistle and flex your mental muscle at The Filly on Tuesday nights – their quiz night is one of the biggest in Joburg and provides patrons with a well-deserved week night upper. Sunninghill is fast proving a top choice for young professionals and you can see this effect in the energy of the suburb. Before long, what with its convenience, parks and well-priced housing, Sunninghill may become the new Bryanston. Get in there quickly if affordability, location and an easy lifestyle is what your heart desires.

THE FIC AND ESTATE AGENTS WHO IS THE FIC
The Financial Intelligence Centre (FIC) is the administrator of the Financial Intelligence Centre Act, 2001, which is central to South Africa’s legislative framework on anti-money laundering, countering the financing of terrorism and combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. The FIC is the country’s national centre for gathering and analysing information disclosed to it. In doing so, the FIC assists in identifying funds generated from unlawful acts, combating money laundering and terrorist financing. To help towards fulfilling this mandate, obligations are imposed on certain business sectors deemed vulnerable to money laundering and terrorist financing, such as banks, attorneys, and estate agents. Part of the obligations imposed on these sectors, known as accountable institutions, is for them to register with the FIC, and to submit regulatory reports to the FIC. Using the information and data submitted by these sectors, the FIC develops financial intelligence, which is requested or referred to competent authorities such as the South African Police Service, the National Prosecuting Authority, the Asset Forfeiture Unit and others including the South African Revenue Service, the Public Protector and supervisory bodies. This financial intelligence is used by domestic and foreign partners in their investigations, prosecutions and other follow up actions. As the FIC is reliant on timeous and quality information from accountable institutions, it is important that the sectors provide accurate, quality data and information to the FIC.

With the FIC’s targeted financial sanctions list in place, estate agents are required to screen their new and existing clients against this list. Furthermore, the process for this screening must be contained in the estate agents RMCP. Estate agents and all accountable institutions may also subscribe to the FIC to receive alerts when any changes on the list are made. Should an estate agent discover that they have a client on the targeted financial sanctions list, they are required not to transact with the individual or entity. The estate agent is required to submit a terrorist property report (TPR), should they identify property in their possession or under their control, which is owned or controlled or on behalf of a person or an entity identified in the sanctions list.
Penalties for non-compliance with these obligations can include administrative sanctions and criminal prosecution. This may amount to a maximum of 15 years in prison or a fine not exceeding R100 million. Penalties depend on the contravention and the severity of the offence. Compliance with the FIC Act makes it more difficult for criminals to hide their illicit proceeds in the formal financial sector. Further information to assist estate agents on what to look out for as indicators of potential criminality is available on the FIC website www.fic.gov.za.
