Wines worth seeking out Get ready for a decorative explosion
W
hat are the hottest decor, interior design and lifestyle trends for 2020? Creative director Anita Bloom reveals all in the Decorex Africa Trend Report 2020 – the definitive guide to what’s in vogue. After years of enjoying industrial, Nordic and navy design trends, be prepared for a shift towards something more eclectic – the coexistence or unification of different styles that reflect good taste and personality. Bloom, who authored the report, ran her own design studio, Just Bloom Designs, before moving to Inspire Trade Expo for four years and then joining the Decorex Africa team, and her vast experience in graphic design and exhibition curation perfectly positions her to identify and share shifting design and decor trends. She reveals two major themes to look out for next year: New Nordic and Contemporary Organic. New Nordic departs from Scandinavian minimalism, with its stark black-andwhite interiors that represent order and harmony, and embraces a cosier, more nuanced aesthetic. Clean, pareddown features still prevail, but look for softer tones, tactile surfaces, natural materials and textured rugs and fabrics. “Living spaces are warmer and more inviting – fireplaces are back, as are table lamps, candles and lanterns, along with lots of green plants,” says Bloom. “The colour palette is easy on the eye: champagne, beige, warm neutral colours, sage green, dark blues and indigo.” The second major trend, Contemporary Organic, is even more nature-focussed, with a luxurious twist. “We’re moving away from sleek materials and sharp architectural lines as ultramodern design adopts softer, more texturally rich touches: furniture with sensual forms, timber with an irregular grain,” Bloom explains. “The effect is relaxing and grounding –

a counterpoint to the highly charged, technology-driven world we live in.” A further trend that will inspire us in 2020 is the mash-up of Scandinavian and Asian trends – think Japadi (a blend of Scandi and traditional Japanese details) and Wabi Sabi (the idea that imperfection is beautiful and life is impermanent). Precision and purpose are modified by delight at the unusual, irregular and striking – handcrafted items, textile arts, chubby furniture, oversized paper lamps, touches of neon, painted floors, and chinoiserie wallpaper. Because down-sizing and urban living restrict the space we live in, we’re looking at the rise of integrated areas in the home – an open-floor arrangement between the kitchen and the lounge means we can socialise while we cook, as well as work or study at the kitchen table. “The new heart of the home will eschew cold, highgloss design in favour of atmosphere and snug simplicity,” says Bloom.

The Giant Periwinkle
From grapes grown on the windswept Agulhas Plain, winemaker Pierre Rabie – also an advocate at the Cape bar – has grown his winery from a garagiste operation into a fullyfledged producer with its own cellar and vineyards near the hamlet of Baardskeerdersbos. The Sun Spider Pinotage and Kelp Forest Syrah are particularly worth discovering, but right now it’s the Blanc Fumé – a lightlywooded sauvignon blanc – that’s the flagship, and a fine example of the coolclimate potential of the deep south.
Thistle & Weed
Winemaker Stephanie Wiid and viticulturist Etienne Terblanche are the duo behind this cult brand known for seeking out vines that show the same tenacity as the weeds farmers battle in the vineyard. The star of the show is Duwweltjie, a chenin blanc from a venerable bushvine vineyard in Paarl. With natural yeasts and a long maturation in old oak barrels, it’s a wonderfully expressive example of old-vine chenin blanc. Brandnetel is its more subtle companion from
Stellenbosch vineyards, while the reds – Knapsekêrel and Nastergal – draw on cabernet franc, tempranillo and the unusual alicante bouschet. If you love wine and are looking for new discoveries, start here.
Saurwein Wines
Jessica Saurwein traces her winemaking heritage back to the 17th century, when her forefathers made “sour wine” for the emperor of Austria. Today, her boutique brand pays tribute to this vinous heritage with a trio of wines crafted from her two favourite cultivars, pinot noir and riesling. With grapes sourced from Elgin, Hemelen-Aarde Ridge and the Elandskloof valley near Villiersdorp, there’s a cool-climate thread running through the pair of pinot noirs and a riesling. Relying on natural yeasts for fermentation, “it’s my aim to achieve energy and harmony simultaneously in the wines”, says Jessica. “The ‘hands-off’ winemaking approach allows me to be guided by the natural balance of the grapes.” Natural ecosystems play a leading role on the bottle too, with the striking labels by South African artist Isabella Kuijers intended as a promise of what lies beneath each cork.
Along with this trend comes multifunctional furniture design – think sofas with several accessories as part of their structure, to configure according to whether one wants to work, relax, study, store objects or recharge electronic devices. We’ll also get more imaginative with interiors: artisanal design for fabrics, odd-shaped mirrors, hand-painted organically shaped ceramic pieces for homeware, 3D wallpapers, tiles, and carpets with geometric shapes and patterns. A broad range of styles is in vogue, with colours that evoke the sea and the sky, along with a splash of warmth (cassis, cantaloupe and mellow yellow). It’s all about the personal touch and creating happily lived-in spaces.

or a city full of eager chefs and a burgeoning restaurant scene, it’s surprising that Joburg only has five cooking studios. That’s set to change, however, when Mathapelo Montsho and Yolanda Nomoyi open their Why Cook Studio this month.

here’s little wonder why Coobs is a firm favourite with its Parkhurst neighbourhood – a fabulous, relaxed sidewalk setting, unpretentious decor and one of the best wine lists in town all help. But every old faithful deserves a makeover now and again and in celebration of 2020, Coobs has done just that. Before anyone panics, Coobs’s fare is still almost 90% sustainable, sourced from family-owned farm Brightside and supports only small local winemakers (try the Restless River Chardonnay from the Hemel-en-Aarde Valley). Upon arrival you’ll be treated to a welcome drink of prosecco which is deliciously light and dry. If bubbles aren’t for you, you have the option of
two incredibly well-priced cocktails from the mixology bar made famous by James Diack’s other establishment Douglas + Hale. Tucked away next to the outdoor dining section, a liquor wizard puts together the most delicious and unusual combinations of flavours – you won’t find a regular old daquiri here. When you’re ready to order starters, it’s recommended you and your guest each order something different and share, the casual atmosphere really allows a lot of tasting and lingering over each course. Try the chilli and lime calamari – while the tubes and heads are the hero, the delicate salad beneath the protein was no garnish – well considered crisp and fresh. For bird lovers there’s the Korean-style chicken, again
accompanied by fragrant corn salad and a generous helping of four large wings. The menu is still as varied as it used to be and most palates will be covered – from the well-rounded starters from which you could build your own tapas meal, to light options for lunch and the serious main courses. The pasta selection is particularly good with combinations like Toulouse sausage and asparagus, wild boar ragu and pockets stuffed with short rib. The portions are good but not overwhelming – if you had a starter or are wanting dessert you’ll definitely leave with a doggy bag. From beginning to end the word that matches the experience has to be fresh – nothing about the food, wine, service or ambience felt forced or heavy. Coobs is intimate enough to be romantic, but without the awkward cheesiness that a lot of high-end bistros can come along with, so it’s an excellent first date spot. It has also retained a relaxed atmosphere, and would be a great option for both a reunion or for client entertainment. The real winner here, however, has to be the service. Polite and helpful without being intrusive, friendly and knowledgeable without being familiar, and fast and efficient. The secret recipe for a restaurant experience that lasts has to be a balance of all the above – excellent food and wine, heart in how it serves the community and planet, authentic and comfortable environment, and superb hosts. Coobs has been delivering all of it in spades over the years and now with its new menu, is showing no signs of stopping.
Of course, they’re excited to be offering new options to both experienced and amateur cooks, particularly those looking for fast, fresh meal ideas. But their enthusiasm is also fueled by the joy that comes from watching a fledgling business grow into a serious concern. “When we set up Why Cook five years ago, we had no idea that our journey would lead us here,” Yolanda muses. Nor, indeed, that the company would win two awards during 2019: the SAB Foundation’s Rocket Fuel Award, as well as the Beyond 5 award from the Small Business Excellence Awards, hosted by Nedbank and the Riversands Incubation Hub. Not bad for a pair of entrepreneurs whose business came about after a chance meeting at a mutual friend’s party. More impressive, still, is the fact that neither had cooked professionally prior to Why Cook’s establishment. Mathapelo, however, had plenty
of exposure to corporate catering, thanks to her job in the training and events division of a cosmetics company, which was enough to show her that the sector needs a change. Having developed her kitchen skills cooking for a big family, where a fresh pot of something delicious was always on hand to feed unexpected guests, it’s not surprising that her style is rooted in home-style cooking that’s big on flavour. “I was always cooking as a kid; it was more of a chore than a choice. I had to develop a love for it, otherwise my life was going to be one big groan,” she says. The recipes her grandmother shared with her during this time are still part of Why Cook, although Yolanda takes enormous pleasure in tweaking them to update flavours and colours, and show clients how their brands can be reflected and expressed through food. What’s next for the pair? Having established a private cheffing service, there’s literally no area of the food world that Why Cook hasn’t tackled – which is why it might soon be time to consider franchising, according to Yolanda. “But, who knows? We’ll just take it one bite at a time.”

Tech gurus say that a ramping up of artificial intelligence (AI) will probably trump most other tech issues in 2020. For many homes, AI has become an integral part of life, as you watch your toddler speak comfortably to Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant. But for many, these are not that simple to grasp or, certainly, set up, so most homeowners use them only for basic tasks.

Watch out for 2020 innovation here, where these task masters will be doing a great deal more than selecting your favourite tune – they’ll be taking phone calls, controlling lights, opening curtains and updating shopping lists. Thankfully, as technology advances, the main players have recognised that to become mainstream, they need to talk to each other. Amazon, Apple and Google are working together to make smart home products compatible with one other. With big names in various giants globally paying attention now, the tech industry is expecting a breakthrough, and, wait for it, emotion recognition is on the radar. High-performing AI chips (neuromorphic or brain
chips), mimic the structure of the brain and process top AI algorithms. Life is going to get even more interesting.
Internet of Things (IoT)
For those who’re not au fait with IoT, it’s essentially a network of interconnected things or devices embedded with various forms of technology, which enables them to collect and exchange data. So, for example, your cellphone talks to your security system or your heating, airconditioning, lighting and so on. We’re able to operate so many gadgets and systems remotely, but that list will increase. More smart technology means less people are required, of course. With the lightning speed of 5G on the horizon – the advent of the fourth industrial revolution – the number of connected devices and mainstream IoT applications is likely to rise substantially across multiple industries. Major changes are on the horizon.
Water
Finding innovative ways to capture, store, use and reuse water has to be a key feature of 2020 in South Africa, but so, too, will be the advances in technology so we’re able to do all that efficiently. New-build homes will have built-in systems, and as we rely less on municipalities and more on ourselves (and entrepreneurs), many
more homes will be retrofitted with simple and increasingly smart systems. Technology will also play a role in auto-limiting our use, so although timers aren’t new, they’re getting far smarter and easier to use – your shower will cut off after a few minutes…
Electricity
What is there to say? We’re going to be doing it for ourselves, and the various technologies and applications are becoming more affordable, more streamlined, and smarter. Who would consider a new build without these assets?
Transport
Autonomous driving being perfected, hybrid or battery vehicles with chargers at home, or – hey – no vehicle at all? With the numerous “taxi” type services available, it’s predicted that in the not too distant future, new homes won’t need garages, because polluting cars – and stressful traffic – are not part of tomorrow. Use the space for parking for the Uber driver’s car when he draws up to your home?
Online shopping
It’s not only here to stay, it’s ramping up to better response times, and, say the gurus, drone delivery. New homes will be designed with drone landing hatches up on roofs, maybe even a refrigerated section…

Tourist accommodation providers, particularly those focussed on the higher-end and luxury side of the market, stand to benefit most from the ongoing growth. “The prospective growth in tourist arrivals will require us to expand the number of rooms available – not just conventional hotel rooms but particularly serviced holiday villas, self-catering apartments, and aparthotels. Aparthotels have become immensely popular in Europe and the US and are a fast-growing category of tourist accommodation,” says Francois van Zyl, partner, 12Cape, an investment fund that owns Latitude Aparthotel in Sea Point. “Aparthotels offer guests the flexibility of a self-catering apartment with the comfort of hotel-like amenities, which is perfect for holidaymakers and business travellers alike.” Says Van Zyl, “Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard
is not only prime real estate, but also a long-standing tourist hotspot among foreign and local holidaymakers. Apart from its natural beauty and myriad lifestyle amenities, it’s also ideally located for visitors to access the city centre and various attractions like the V&A Waterfront and Table Mountain. We believe the Atlantic Seaboard will experience the highest demand growth for new tourist accommodation units over the next few years,” Van Zyl says. Besides the growing demand, what makes property in the Atlantic Seaboard an attractive investment opportunity is that it’s still relatively “cheap” when compared to similar holiday destinations in the United States, Latin America, Europe and Asia. “One square meter of luxury real estate in Cape Town costs on average 60% less than in other coastal tourist hotspots,” he explains.
“Prime property, the world over, has always yielded steady returns because of the limited supply and the continually increasing demand for it. The Atlantic Seaboard has proven this for decades, which is why 12Cape focusses exclusively on investing in this area.”
“The average buyer profile in Jukskei Park is also a much younger buyer. This stimulates growth and renewal due to upgrades and renovations on property.” Butler concludes that the proposed extension to the existing Gautrain station between Sandton and Cosmo City as well as the link with Lanseria Airport should prompt demand for various surrounding areas and create a positive stimulus for the suburbs nearby. “When the proposed Gautrain station in Randburg takes effect, owning an investment property in an area like Ferndale for instance could be a very good asset. Other areas for investors to consider include Randpark Ridge, Sundowner and Northcliff.”
The South African Reserve Bank has lowered the repo rate and this is a hugely welcome move for the property industry. This coupled with inflation at a lower rate than last year at this time, theoretically means that those currently paying off bonds should make a huge effort to pay the instalments they were previously paying into a bond, and even a little bit more if possible every month, to save on interest and shorten the ultimate payback period. The lower repo rate also means that banks are likely to be more and more lenient when approving bonds, and this means that buyers will be able to commit, especially since property prices have levelled off in several areas, and we have now definitely shifted into a buyer’s market making this an ideal time to purchase property. Those looking for an investment property to rent out would do particularly well to purchase now, as incoming rental can stretch further to assist in paying off the interestbearing portion of a bond.
