Q: How has the craft spirits industry changed since you started out? A: With the boom in craft beer, and the growing gin scene in Europe, we thought the trend would come here, but we had no clue it was going to go as crazy as it has! At the very beginning bottle stores and bars would question why they needed more than one or two gins on the shelf. Today there’s a huge appetite for establishments to have a large selection of local gins.

ike many of my fellow humans, I really enjoy a glass of wine or three from time to time. I also very much enjoy tasting something new and out of the ordinary – and South Africa being the wine-producing powerhouse it is, being able to pop the cork (okay, screw the top off ) of some of our smaller producers’ offerings, is a privilege we should not take for granted. And thanks to events like Publik Wine Fair, this privilege is not reserved only for the select few. Says director David Cope, “Publik Wine Fair Joburg is one of a few unpretentious, relaxed and inclusive wine events in Joburg and the event is specifically oriented around a younger, creative audience.
I
t wouldn’t be a stretch to say that Hope on Hopkins started the craft gin revolution in South Africa. When, in 2014, they finally obtained permission to set up the first distillery in the city of Cape Town, their copper stills were allocated numbers #001 and #002, which they still proudly hold today. Nearly five years on, it’s time for a change, and this summer sees the muchloved brand making a few changes. We asked co-founder Lucy Beard…

Q: What’s changed in the way consumers are enjoying gin? A: People are definitely becoming more and more experimental. When we started it was just ice, lemon and lots of tonic. Today there are crazy cocktails and colourful gins and flavoured tonics. But we are purists at heart. We want to celebrate gin for what gin is, and ultimately gin is about juniper. Although our three flagship gins are quite different, juniper is very much present in all of them.
This large industrial warehouse allows for even more guests, ensuring an informal, festive afternoon of tasting the latest releases from some of the best artisan wine producers in South Africa in an approachable and laid-back way. Now in its second year, the event will bring together some of the best growers, winemakers and producers, who will pour over 100 wines for visitors. Expect to taste limitedproduction wines from lesser-known grapes and areas and engage with the winemakers themselves to get a first-hand feel for what makes them and their wines so special.
Q: You’re changing the name of the brand to Hope Distillery, and rebranding the bottles. Why the change? A: When we first launched there was no huge need to stand out, but today there’s a wealth of gins on the shelf. People see our three labels and think it’s all one gin, so that needed to change. We wanted to keep our identity, but take it to the next level. We also changed the “Salt River” gin to “African Botanical”. We felt it needed to be more descriptive, and it’s more of a selling point for the export market.

Q: Any plans to expand your range of spirits? A: We have produced an aged agave spirit, a reposado, but we’ve had some challenges because in South Africa the legislation doesn’t allow you to age agave spirit. We’re hoping that’s going to change. Our whisky is a little behind schedule, but we’re hoping to get some in barrel by the middle of next year. We’ve also been playing around with rum. We have a bit of work to do, but watch this space.

I
t’s not surprising that Garth Davids, executive chef at Steyn City’s Nineteen Restaurant, is drawn to the kind of dishes many of us would consider a hug on a plate. He was, after all, raised in a home where Sundays meant plenty of banter over a roast. In between that, the table was a place where love was expressed through the perfect seasoning of a leg of lamb, or the cheesy chew of lasagne.

ocated in Sandton on the 7th floor of The Leonardo – Africa’s tallest building – Aurum Restaurant is a new premium offering on the Joburg food scene, overlooking a spacious pool terrace with the Sandton skyline behind it. It’s the culmination of a long-held vision by chef and culinary consultant Paulo Santo, supported by his former Cube Tasting Kitchen colleagues, Darren O’Donovan and Lisa de Beer. We chatted to the team to find out more ahead of their November opening. Q: What’s your vision for Aurum? A: I realised a while ago that Joburg is starved of that premium, occasionoriented space that doesn’t blow the budget. For me as a chef, the kitchen comes first, and Aurum is a fantastic platform to showcase our respective experience and talent behind the scenes. We’re also at a unique address: the rooftop of Africa. The views are beyond stunning – on a clear day you can see the airport and beyond the city all the way to the Voortrekker monument in Pretoria. Q: Tell us about the food and wine? A: As the Latin word for gold, Aurum is inspired by contemporary cuisine from the Latin-speaking European countries. It’s about luxury and quality, but also food that’s accessible and not pretentious. We’ll be featuring a great selection of cocktails that are both traditional and trendy, as well as local and international wines that aren’t ostentatiously priced. Q: How big is the space? A: The restaurant seats 140 to 200 inside and 60 outside on the terrace. Then there’s our wine library and private seating areas in the mezzanine level upstairs. Our bar is also a feature of the
space: usually restaurants try and squeeze their bar into a corner, but it’s actually the most volumedriven space in a restaurant. Q: How does Aurum fit in with the rest of the building? A: We’ll service the building anywhere you can consume a plate of food or drink, but we’re entirely independent from the Legacy brand. The apartment blocks are fully designed almost all sold, and there are seven floors of hotel space still to be commissioned to a hotel provider. The top of the building features eight double-volume penthouse apartments, and the Leonardo Suite is on the three top floors. And then at the very top will be a bar and public viewing area.
Q: You also have a separate bar and food offering for the pool? A: Yes – this area is much more casual, but it’s still a premium offering geared towards small plates, cocktails and beers on tap. The entire menu is based on our woodfired oven, so think woodfired tapas, pizzas and bar snacks. Q: Who is the restaurant aimed at? A: We didn’t just want this to be a hotel restaurant, which can be quite intimidating and a little inaccessible. We want the general public to feel comfortable coming here. I want to be that top-of-mind place when you want to go out and celebrate, and where you trust us with your occasion. With Aurum, we have an opportunity to do that really well.
“I grew up on easy cooking and honest flavours,” he says. Flavours that are recalled in the nostalgia of the menu he recently introduced at Nineteen, but which have been given an elegant makeover with the addition of ingredients that turn home cooking into sophisticated cafe-style fare. The fish and chips is a case in point: a crunchy coleslaw cuts through the richness of buttermilk batter while a drizzle of Napolitana sauce adds another flavour dimension. Garth honed his craft at a number of leading restaurants in the Cape, his hometown. The decision to move to Joburg came after his wife was offered
a new job, and although Garth wasn’t quite sure what his next step would be after the relocation, he was up for the challenge. The fact that said challenge involved a post at what he considers one of Joburg’s leading lifestyle estates, was a major plus – and, when he got the chance to move into a management position three months ago, he leaped at the opportunity. “Since then, we’ve moved the focus from fine dining to transform Nineteen into an eatery far more in keeping with its setting on a residential estate. Although it’s still a great option for special occasions like birthdays or date nights, we’ve added some more light meals and sharing plates to the menu. At the same time, we’re making the most of the various settings in the restaurant – sit inside if you want an intimate dinner, or enjoy your sundowner on the terrace,” he says. Garth admits that he is “overwhelmed” by the trajectory his career is taking, but he’s not ready to stop just yet. “I’m really looking forward to the future. There’s so much I want to achieve!”

Treat with respect When it comes with the tag ‘patio furniture’, somehow we think it’s weather and life proof. It may well be to a lesser or greater extent, but there are ways, means, methods and products to prevent premature ageing, and indeed, prolong its life. WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

s our South African lifestyle creeps more towards the outside than in, good quality weather-resistant furniture has become prized. Not only because it’s wonderful not to have to move cushions or furniture inside from out, but it looks far better to have a dressed patio, too. Some products will have their own specifications in terms of caring for it, and it’s smart to wise up on that to ensure you don’t jeopardise any warranty. The fundis also advise against any harsh treatments like high-power hosing or bleaching, because that will undoubtedly weaken the material. A good vacuum clean is often very handy, particularly for woven furniture. Mia Delport, marketing manager, Patio Warehouse, points out that we need to distinguish between a covered and uncovered patio. “We recommend all wooden products should be under cover. Our harsh South Africa sun dries out the wood, and it requires too much maintenance.” She suggests all-weather wicker, aluminium, resin (plastic) and cast aluminium as furniture types for an uncovered patio. “New-technology products are also available such as fully upholstered products that can be left outside. The foam in the cushions is designed to let through as much air and water as possible, and it’s mould resistant. So when you leave the fully upholstered set
outside, and it has rained, it will dry within 30 minutes,” she says. If your cushions aren’t weather proof, you’ll need to put them away, or at least, cover them with weatherproof covers. Don’t put them away damp or wet, or cover them in plastic. Dry them thoroughly first.

Delport has advice for maintenance and cleaning on all products. “Use a dry, clean cloth to dust your furniture weekly and help maintain its lustre. To clean furniture, spray off any dirt or debris with a hose, and wipe dry with a soft cloth. Avoid allowing water to stand on the surface of your furniture and cushions. “For prevention, there are sprays for wicker protection, aluminium protection and Textilene, perfect to help keep your furniture looking at its best.”
Wood
Of course, if you love wood and are prepared to maintain it, the experts advise regular oiling, or annual sealing or varnishing. “If you don’t want to constantly reseal the wood, apply wood oil or polish on a regular basis from the day you buy it. Liquid polish is easy to apply, repels water, and is cost-effective too. It keeps the furniture looking youthful.”
Metal
Metal furniture can become stained, and acquire rust spots. Keep it clean,
as dust traps water, and accelerates rusting. If you see a rust spot, treat it swiftly by sanding it, applying a metal primer, then paint.
Plastic
Among other things, sun creams and screens can stain plastic, so rinse off the chairs regularly with a mild soapy solution.
Different climate, different treatment?
Delport says because it’s more moist at the coast, it’s easier to treat wooden products there. “You don’t need to oil your set as regularly as you would inland. But, although our aluminium products are powder coated to prevent them from rusting, coastal areas need to apply the aluminium protection more often.”

inbro Park is predominantly an industrial area filled with businesses like Eurolux, PNET and Jaycor. It’s located close to Alex and is home to many interesting outlets and start-up headquarters. “The commute varies, of course, depending on where you live. The office park gets quite congested with traffic during the morning and late afternoon with people getting on and off the N3 and M1. The traffic isn’t that bad around the park – it’s only when you actually get into the park that it can be a bit inconvenient with a lot of trucks coming in and out on steep uphill roads. From Bryanston it takes me about 40 to 45 minutes there and back but I don’t take the highway. The highway on a good day would take me about 30 to 35 minutes,” says Garreth Johnson, manager and Linbro Park business tenant.
Property The Linbro Business Park that I work in is quite industrial – particularly for Sandton. My company moved here very strategically about 15 years ago for its location – it’s right near Alexandria. Small businesses bloom out here, mainly due to the lack of direct competition. Space is also a bonus for those setting up shop and because the area is full of other businesses, there are plenty of opportunities for partnerships and mutually beneficial working arrangements. While residential areas are at this point quite limited, secure developments are starting to spring up, creating handy boltholes for businessmen working close by. As Joburg’s workforce expands and new companies are born, Linbro Park might well offer the
savvy property entrepreneur a great opportunity for future investment.
Schools Handily for local parents, Linbro Park has a few school offerings for children within the suburb itself, which will save parents who work in the area from leaving for the school run and then doubling back. Morden Montessori School is a great option for those who favour this particular way of teaching for their little ones. There are also a collection of primary schools to attend once they’ve finished their years at Morden. Laerskool Nobel and Skeen Primary School educate leaners from Grade R to Grade 7 and The King’s School will look after your child’s school career from babyhood right through to matric. For those who work or attend school outside of Linbro Park, easy (although not inexpensive) rapid commuting can be enjoyed via the Gautrain, which has a station at Marlboro.
Explore Aside from its traditional business use, Linbro Park also happens to host many children’s event companies, with a wide variety of both coordinators and venues from which to choose. Kiddy Up Party Venue offers themed parties with fun activities like pony rides, splash slides, jumping castles
and onsite catering to take the load off mom. On the subject of ponies, Byerley Stables and Party Venue is also close by and offers full equestrian services such as livery and instruction, as well as garden parties for kids. There are a few quick and easy onthe-run lunch options in Linbro Park central as well as a couple of sit-down client-friendly restaurants further afield. Tuck into Wimpy, Kauai, Nando’s and Steers if you’re pressed for time, or spoil yourself with an early Friday treat at Primi Piatti, Cape Town Fish Market, or Jimmy’s Killer Prawns. If you’re looking for something a little less indulgent and a bit more invigorating, take the family (and dog!) to the Modderfontein Ride Free Bike Park for established trails – it makes for a refreshing morning outdoors. Redrock Brewing Company is a fantastic spot to spend a Saturday – or even a spot to celebrate an adult birthday. The brewery’s craft beers are inspired by rock ’n’ roll and described as easy-drinking, but beers that “don’t step down”. Linbro Park presents a good offering for businesses of all sizes, given its proximity to Alex and its reasonable commute from Sandton central – and if it’s not business you’re interested in but pleasure, neighbouring Modderfontein ticks all the boxes for an adventurous weekend.

New ultra-luxury private homes in Mauritius
O
ne&Only Le Saint Géran has launched its first collection of private homes. Exclusive freehold beachfront residences are on offer to international HNWIs. The properties are available in five designs, ranging from two to six bedrooms. This exclusive community will include 52 villas on a 2km stretch of beach among tropical vegetation on the resort’s secluded peninsula. With two styles to choose from – modern Mauritian, with pitched roofs, or contemporary, with flat roofs – the concept is “ultra-luxury service within a residential space”. Residents will have access to the adjacent One&Only Le Saint Géran’s amenities and receive priority
status for reservations at resort restaurants, experiences and events. Ranging from 280m² to 758m², all homes have two floors of spacious interiors and include private terraces, kitchens that can be prestocked, secluded gardens and swimming pools. “Many opt for the island life in Mauritius, not only for its beauty but also for greater financial and tax security,” says Hugues Jannet, director of Private Homes at One&Only Le Saint Géran. “South Africans buying a private home will be entitled to Mauritian residency permits.” The properties will be fully maintained and serviced by the resort on behalf of owners.
Flyt Hospitality Fund launched for 12J investors
A
nuva Investments, SA’s first Section 12J company, has launched a new property/ hospitality fund. It allows for diversification from traditional 12J private equity into the property sector via a hospitality fund created in partnership with Cape-based property developer Flyt Property Investment.
Investment in Section 12J venture capital vehicles has boomed over the past 24 months because of its tax incentives. Section 12J provides local taxpayers with a 100% deduction on the invested amount, so they can claim tax relief of up to 45% on the investment amount.
Anuva Investments CEO and founder Neill Hobbs says the company’s investment mandate with Flyt Property Investment is focussed on quality hospitality. “Our strategy is to find outstanding opportunities in the sector: good-quality, strategicallylocated properties with a focus on sectional title serviced apartments and student accommodation.”
The partnership will issue shares in selected qualifying property developments. Two Cape Town developments have been structured into the fund. The issued shares give the holder access to all benefits of the property. A minimum investment of R1m is required from private investors, trusts, stokvels, investment syndicates or companies. The investment is locked for five years.
Property was excluded as an asset class for 12J investing until recently, when a few venture capital company (VCC) specialists included the hospitality sector in qualifying VCCs.
Eaton Square, currently under construction in Deep River, will be available to Section 12J investors via the Flyt Hospitality Fund. It’s due for completion in January next year.
Green awards Val de Vie opens for Sandton Gate show house for retirees
S
andton Gate precinct has been awarded Green Star certification for its sustainability and design features shortly before Phase 1 of this mixed-use development opens to the public this November.
Site-wide requirements were met under the Sustainable Precincts tool, which was developed to influence and incentivise developers to consider good design, community and environmental outcomes.
It received four-star certification under the Green Star SA Sustainable Precincts v1.1 tool, following the project’s second-round submission in mid-August, whereas Phase 1 achieved a five-star Green Star SA Office v1.1 Design certification in July. Abland and Tiber are the developers of the precinct.
Some of the precinct’s sustainable incentives include an app-based carpooling scheme for occupants, bus shelters with solar-powered charging facilities, and a reverse vending machine that accepts recyclable materials in exchange for credits or tokens. Three primary waste management schemes have also been strategised.
“We’re proud to be a frontrunner in the green building sector with this development, one of the first to be rated under the Green Building Council SA’s Green Star Sustainable Precincts tool,” says Tiber director Germano Cardoso.
Abland property development manager Simon van Helsdingen says by taking an integrated view of both the precinct and user experience, Sandton Gate aims to retain leading tenants who’ll benefit from lower operating costs.

new show house is open for viewing at Val de Vie Evergreen Estate. Val de Vie Evergreen Phase 1 is 97% sold and the first residents took occupation in their homes in July.
