I

know, it sounds too good to be true. But it’s not. What it is, is the Mystery Weekend and it takes place three to four times a year in the town of Franschhoek. This bespoke weekend getaway package includes two nights’ accommodation, breakfast on Saturday and Sunday morning, dinner at an exclusive restaurant the Saturday evening, and lunch on the Sunday afternoon before heading home, well-rested and tummies bursting with the most delicious food you can imagine. In between all of this there’s a host of fun-filled activities that have been organised for you – you can do as much or as little as you want. The idea behind the Mystery Weekend is to explore Franschhoek, explains Linda Coltart, the mastermind behind the scenes. Linda came up with the idea eight years ago as a way to attract visitors to the town during the off-season months. “We were looking for ways to attract winter business, trying various offers, discounts, etc. At that time, I used to sit on the accommodation committee. I proposed my idea and was asked to put it together and run with it.” Eight years later, the mystery weekends have welcomed almost 2,000 visitors

to the region. “We’ve tried new ways to present it, but it always comes back to the original idea – great places to sleep, eat and drink with a hint of the experiences and offerings the valley has hidden away,” says Linda. It’s all very cloak and dagger… You’ll receive an email directing you to the check-in point. That’s all. Once there, you’ll receive your Mystery Weekend box, containing all the details you need to know – where you’ll be staying, where you’ll be dining, and what you’ll be doing. After checking in to your weekend home, the festivities officially kick off with an informal get-together at an establishment in town (this changes every time) where you can mingle with fellow mystery weekenders. It’s a jovial affair, the flow of conversation eclipsed only by the flowing of the wine. We share a table with a couple from Joburg who received this weekend as a gift (what a gift!) and another couple who have attended at least one weekend every year for the past four years. “We do get a lot of repeat business. It’s also been great to see how our market has grown with guests from as far away as Pretoria, East London, and the Free State,” says Linda. Of course, the biggest part of what makes the mystery weekends as successful as they are, is the participation of the establishments that warmly welcome the visitors. For the July mystery weekend, there were 19 hotels and guesthouses and 20 restaurants taking part. (But the participants change every weekend.) Our mystery box revealed that we would be staying at the five-star Franschhoek Manor and dining at Foliage on the Saturday evening. Breakfast on Saturday would be at Le Petit Manoir (the best perfectly poached eggs Benedict you’ll ever find), at the guesthouse on Sunday, and lunch at Cosecha Restaurant on Noble Hill Wine Estate Sunday afternoon. But first, foraging with Foliage owner Chris Erasmus on the Saturday morning. Chris used to head up the kitchen at La Motte before opening Foliage several years ago, to, as he puts it, “put the real Franschhoek on a plate”. That evening we get to experience Chris’s vision of what exactly it means to taste the real Franschhoek. And it is glorious. The next morning, I unwillingly tear myself out of bed, we say goodbye to our gracious host, Cindy, and conclude the weekend at Consecha, a Mexican restaurant serving the most delicious, authentic tortillas, tacos and tequilas. We drive home, back to reality, wishing we could turn back the clock to Friday afternoon.

his year, 9 August falls on a Friday, which is even more of an excuse to celebrate Women’s Day with your favourite group of females. And what better way to do that than with chocolate and wine? In conjunction with Creation Wines and glassware connoisseurs Riedel, the Clico Boutique Hotel in Rosebank will host a Creation Wines chocolate pairing event this Women’s Day. Hosted in its function venue set in its lush grounds, the room has sweeping glass sliding doors to maximise the light and garden views – but also an indoor fireplace to keep you cosy on wintry afternoons. The event will be hosted by Jaco Wheeler, Clico’s general manager, who until recently was the sommelier at Creation Wines in the Hemelen-Aarde valley just inland from Hermanus. With this pedigree, he brings extensive knowledge of Creation’s varietals, including their viognier, pinot noir, merlot and syrah that form part of the tasting. Pairing food with wine to enhance the flavours of both is nothing new – but focussing on chocolate as the pairing food is not as common. A boutique chocolatier in Knysna created the chocolate especially for the event, and with just a small mouthful of chocolate, it’s remarkable how much the flavour of the wine changes and its unique notes accentuated. In the same way that food impacts your experience of a wine, so too does the glass you drink it out of. Through a demonstration of drinking the same wine out of different Riedel glasses,

you’ll see just how much a wine’s flavour is affected by this. It makes a lot of sense, then, why different varietals are best match to specific shaped glasses – something that Riedel has made an art of. The key takeaway here, of course, is how well worthwhile it is to invest in good wine glasses. The wine and chocolate pairing takes place from 3pm to 5pm on 9 August at a cost of R200 per person. Best of all, any female who books to stay over at Clico on the night of the 9th will be able to join the event free of charge. While Women’s Day marks the first event of its kind at the Clico, there are plans to host it in future as private team-building events, addons to a conference or meeting, or even as a fun year-end function.

t’s all very well dreaming of being the next Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen, but the reality is that every would-be chef entering a professional kitchen for the first time, feels they have more in common with a mom forced to bake something for the school fete than a Michelin-star winner. That’s why the Capsicum Culinary Studio and The Private Hotel School have introduced Eat! On Keyes, a restaurant where students get to do the cooking.

“We don’t want to duplicate anything that’s available at other restaurants in the area. At the same time, I want to show customers that South Africa isn’t the culinary backwater that many people think it is – we’re well in line with food trends.”

Not that patrons would realise their dishes have been whipped up by people still working towards their chef’s whites. That’s because executive chef Tyrone Kleynhans, who heads up the restaurant, has created a menu that’s all about sophisticated techniques that are very much in line with international food trends.

Tyrone has also included input from the students when compiling the menu. “One of the reasons for opening this restaurant was to give them a chance to experiment with their own ideas,” he explains.

“I’ve spent a lot of time watching social media trends and digesting what’s happening on cooking shows,” he comments. The result is a selection of dishes that surpasses even the country’s leading restaurants in terms of innovation: think Peruvian chicken bao buns, Moroccan eggs Benedict and poutine.

He insists on all menu components being made from scratch, and redesigns the menu every six months to provide a new challenge for students.

Again, there’s a sound rationale behind this approach. “The reality is that even the greatest of our students will probably find themselves in positions below commis chefs once they enter the industry. They’ll be chopping onions and peeling potatoes, and it’s hard to sustain interest and energy when you’re doing menial tasks like this. We want to show them the possibilities, give them a glimpse of what they will go on to achieve if they just keep at it.”

on’t let a small thing like the lack of space deter you from channelling your inner gardener and letting your green fingers fly. You’d be surprised just how easy it is to incorporate plants into your home.

Hanging out

If you’re stuck for space or not sure what to do with an empty wall, a hanging garden could be your green solution. It works well with succulents and hardy grasses that need little care and water. Choose a cylindrical container that sits comfortably against the wall and plant a selection of species with interesting shapes and colourways. Alternatively, choose plants with scented flowers and allow the fragrance to waft through your home. Hanging gardens planted with herbs and vegetables are increasingly being seen in urban environments. Keep in mind that they require plenty of sunlight.

Climb the walls

Create a mini garden using pallet wood nailed together into a neat grid and criss-crossed with fishing gut, and deck it out with epiphytes, or air plants, which can grow without soil. Bromeliads are popular at-home epiphyte choices, as are some species

of orchids. Watering is best done by removing the installation, submerging it and the plants in water for up to 20 minutes, then draining it well.

Upcycle

You don’t have to spend a fortune on a series of containers for a potted garden or green indoor installation. Use what’s around you – things like discarded copper lighting components and PVC pipes could work. Use coir (fibre from coconut husks), which retains water very well, to create a sense of cohesion between the different containers. Whatever you use, you’ll need to ensure you have proper drainage. Drill or punch holes in the bottom of your container to allow excess water to seep out.

Living artworks

Bonsai can be used as decor objects to make a style statement in your home. These miniature ornamental trees command attention and look great in a modern, minimalist space. Some of the species that do well

inside are the Natal fig, tiger bark fig, Japanese maple and Chinese maple.

On display

A terrarium garden is easy to install and maintain. You’ll need a glass container with an opening that’s big enough to fit your hand through. Start with a base layer of pebbles followed by some horticultural charcoal – to absorb fumes due to decomposing plant material in the closed environment – and on top of that goes a thick layer of potting soil. Adding moss in-between plants will help to retain moisture in the soil. Plants that are suitable for terrariums enjoy high humidity and low to moderate light levels and will remain relatively small. These include ferns, miniature orchids, African violets, cyclamens, air plants and peace-in-the-home.

For the people Jenni Baxter is co-founder and editor-in-chief of SAPeople.com, a news site for South Africans worldwide

J

enni was born in Kuruman in the Kalahari and grew up in Salt Rock, KZN. After graduating, she worked as a TV producer, political researcher and journalist in Durban and Joburg, before moving to London to interview movie stars for international magazines and to tackle British teen angst for UK TV shows. After marrying a fellow South African, they emigrated to Australia to start a family and set up a web design studio. In 2010 they relocated to France for a year and haven’t left. Jenni co-authored The Expat Confessions (2004) and co-wrote a chapter in the book Should I Stay Or Should I Go (2010). She’s happiest paddle boarding on the Med, writing, or sipping rooibos in the African bush. Q: How did you start your business? A: I’ve lived in the UK, Australia and France, but no matter where I am, my heart always skips a beat with pride when I hear an inspiring story about South Africans doing well anywhere in the world. And I’ve always cared about what’s going on back home.

I figured there would be other expats who felt the same, so I created SAPeople where we can celebrate and connect South Africans at home and abroad. I’ve always been a journalist (and used to interview all the Hollywood stars, including

our Charlize Theron) and at the time I co-owned a web design studio which built and managed SAReunited, the biggest reuniting website in SA. I also co-wrote a book about SA expats. So, my journalism, web design, expat interest and SAReunited all combined in a fabulous way to help make SAPeople happen. Q: What obstacles have you faced and how have you overcome them? A: Google swallowed up most of our advertisers, and for a while I worked only for love and a belief that this site does so much to help bridge the gap between expats and those in SA – and for the greater good of South Africa. I never stopped believing in the site, and I submitted proposals to every bank and company who I felt could benefit by sponsoring us. They all said no. Until one said yes. I’ve now built close relationships with a few advertisers and sponsors who fit perfectly with our readers – and for whom I’ll always go the extra mile (more than Google ever would). There are other obstacles – we could benefit from more investment. Facebook’s everchanging algorithms (adapt or die.) Crazy insults on social media from people who forget that we’re people! Copycat sites.

I’ve learnt to not take anything personally, to enjoy doing what I love, have fun and just focus on SAPeople. Focus is key! We’re so blessed – contributors send us their photos and stories to share, and we receive messages daily from expats thanking us for connecting them to “home”, and from those at home thanking us for making them feel proud to be South African. Q: Who or what inspires you? A: My three daughters. Cassie dances to the beat of her own drum. Tara is an oasis of calm and testimony to the law of attraction. And Jadie is a truth missile who makes everyone feel like a movie star. I learn from them every day. I’ve also been inspired by Brand South Africa’s Pumela Salela who told me that before she makes a decision, she asks herself, “What would Mandela do? What would Jesus do?” And so now, when I face tough choices, I ask myself, “What would Pumela do?”

Local interest in US SA people news citizenship on the rise A SA people dating n imminent, dramatic increase in the investment threshold for foreigners to access a US Green Card via the EB-5 programme is prompting a flurry of interest among South Africans. Says Chris Immelman, who heads up Pam Golding International, “Within a month this amount increased from $500,000 (R7,1m) to $1,35m (R19,2m), which, taking the exchange rate into account, is a significant hike for South Africans wishing to acquire USA citizenship via this method.”

The EB-5, which was created as a means of stimulating the US economy through job creation and capital investment by foreigners, is at present the quickest route to obtaining a Green Card which

is valid for 10 years and provides the opportunity to acquire citizenship. Pam Golding International recently teamed up with American Dream, which is represented in major centres in South Africa, in providing a turnkey service to help locals gain lawful permanent residence in the USA. Says Stuart Ferguson, CEO, American Dream, “The EB-5 investment visa programme guarantees that a family will get Green Cards, leading to citizenship after five years. The benefits are many – the American economy is booming, it’s easy to start a business there, and Green Card holders have access to all the advantages of education and business opportunities, plus, the investment capital returns to the investor after a period of five years.

Schooling in the US is advanced, largely due to large US corporations making contributions to enhance facilities for schooling and education. Furthermore, being an English-speaking country, it’s easy for South Africans to adapt.” Explaining why the EB-5 investment threshold is about to more than double, Ferguson says this hasn’t been overhauled since the programme has been in existence and the US authorities have elected to link it to their annual Consumer Price Index (CPI), which has increased to an all-time high of 255.16 index points in May this year. The EB-5 programme was launched by the US government in 1990, when the CPI averaged at around 130.

he streets are lined with beautiful old trees and there’s a real sense of community in Norwood. I love taking my dog for a walk around the neighbourhood or in one of the small community parks in the area. Grant Avenue is where it’s all happening in Norwood and is an excellent road to stroll along if you’re tired of the offerings in Parkhurst. Here you can browse antique shops, pick up a few kosher pieces at the Jewish-owned delis, pop into the Ascot Boutique Hotel for a cocktail, and end the day over a glorious street-food meal at Sumting Fresh Restaurant.
