Such a tonic A new premium tonic is set to shake up your sundowners. Is it time to start asking for a G&G? WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES

T
he craft gin scene has exploded over the past five years, with artisan and commercial distilleries creating bespoke gins infused with everything from indigenous fynbos to Kalahari truffles. And while there has been a slow uptick in the number and variety of tonic water mixers to match – with Fitch & Leedes perhaps the poster-child for widely available craft tonic – a trio of local businessmen reckon the market for premium tonic water remains ripe for disruption.
Not gone in 60 seconds
A
s South Africa joins the ranks of countries in lockdown, the Norval Foundation is committed to providing inspiration beyond isolation, offering #60SecondArt digital stories via YouTube, Instagram and Facebook as well as virtual 360-degree “walk-about” tours, giving art lovers not only access to museum spaces but also to paintings, sculptures, installations and even to the (local and international) collaborators – influencers, museum directors, artists, curators and collectors themselves. “We believe that art has the power to enrich our lives and that artists contribute to our communities in a profound way, so in these dystopian times, Norval Foundation will celebrate art and artists by releasing 60-second stories about one artwork or one artist, once or twice a day each day,” says Norval Foundation’s chief executive Elana Brundyn. “The art being discussed either forms part of the Homestead Collection or is currently on
display, and will be released on Norval Foundation’s Instagram account.” Clips will consist of a still image or video of one specific artwork, with an artist, curator, musician, writer or museum team member reflecting on an artwork via a voice over, in simple, easy to understand terms. The clips can be viewed in retrospect, providing a digital gallery of accessible art experiences.
“Tonic water is a fairly simple product, consisting largely of carbonated water, sugar and a bittering agent, most often quinine,” explains Ken Kinsey-Quick, one of the co-founders of Gentian Tonic. “But when we started doing our research we discovered gentian root, and we knew that it was just the right ingredient to set our tonic apart from the competition.” Ken is an investment fund manager and entrepreneur based in the winelands. A passionate foodie when he’s not managing funds, he’s dreaming up new businesses, such as the popular Banhoek Chilli Oil that has become a staple product on the shelves of good delicatessens everywhere. Gentian Tonic was born when he and two friends – advertising guru Reg Lascaris and Rowan Smith, former managing director of Shanduka Resources – came up with the idea of catering for the growing global thirst
for premium tonics, but with the twist of gentian root. Gentian root grows naturally in alpine environs across Asia, Europe and the Americas. It has been used as a medicinal herb for thousands of years, largely thanks to its digestive properties, and has long been a key ingredient in popular brands such as Aperol, Underberg and Angostura bitters.
While production hurdles have slightly delayed the launch of Gentian in the local market, Gentian will finally hit local shelves next month, and the trio have big plans for the brand. After launching in the Western Cape and Gauteng, the trio are aiming for a share of the global market. Their inspiration? The British brand Fever Tree, which had annual sales north of R4bn in 2019.
But what do a fund manager, ad man and businessman know about creating drinks? They knew how to find the right skills, so with the concept in place they turned to Oisin Davis, founder of Poacher’s Premium Irish Mixers, to create just the right flavour profile for Gentian. Working with a flavour house in London, Oisin crafted a handful of test batches and shipped them to South Africa.
“This isn’t a boutique garagiste product that we’ll grow slowly; we’re aiming big,” says Ken. “What we’re really trying to do with this brand is to take it international. We’re experimenting here in South Africa with the formula, production and marketing, and when we get it right, we’ll start scaling this up internationally.”
“We blind-tasted each of them and luckily all three of us were unanimous which one was best,” says Ken. Key to the flavour profile is the lack of sweetness, with Gentian crafted as a low-sugar product from the start. “People want low sugar, but they don’t want to compromise on flavour, and Gentian definitely delivers. Gentian Tonic tastes great on its own over ice, but it’s also the perfect mixer to enjoy with the wonderful craft gins we have here in the Cape,” says Ken. “Ask for a gin-and-Gentian. Or, as we like to call it, a ‘G&G’!”
FANCY A G&G? TRY IT WITH ROKU Roku Gin launched in South Africa in 2019, and offers a unique flavour profile thanks to the use of traditional Japanese botanicals. Roku means “six” in Japanese, and alongside the expected flavour notes of juniper, coriander and angelica root, you’ll find Sakura flower, Sakura leaf, Yuzu peel, Sencha tea, Gyokuro tea and Sansho pepper. It’s easy to spot on the shelf too, with a six-sided glass bottle etched with the Japanese botanicals. (R299 from retailers)
Norval Foundation education coordinator Lindsay Hendricks will also be narrating a series of #60SecondArt clips for kids via YouTube, Instagram and Facebook, including an exploration of William Kentridge’s small bronze art works made from everyday household objects that form part of his Procession Series, now on display at Norval Foundation. These short clips provide light-hearted informative entertainment while immersing children in valuable art education. Most clips will be narrated by Lindsay, but there will also be surprise clips with voice overs by other narrators. “Especially in times like these, Norval Foundation endeavours to create high-quality content and public programming to broaden our understanding of the visual arts,” adds Elana. “Our aim remains to make art widely and digitally accessible to local and international visitors of all ages while creating a self-sustaining centre for art.” Good to know we can still get our essential dose of culture, even while we’re in hibernation. Stepping forward As a dedicated sneakerhead, Theo Baloyi was inspired to create a brand of shoes that Africans would feel proud of. Enter Bathu, sneakers designed and manufactured entirely locally. WORDS: LISA WITEPSKI

I
t doesn’t matter which South African language you speak, “bathu” – township slang for shoes – is a word that’s instantly recognisable. That’s why Theo chose it as the name for his sneaker brand. “It’s a word that unites us,” he says. And unity, along with national identity and pride, is important to him. That point struck him when, while stuck in Dubai International Airport during an eight-hour layover, he got chatting with the owner of a store. “The retailer was French, but there he was, selling his brand on the other side of the world. That got me thinking – why couldn’t an African brand enjoy the same sort of success?” At the time, Theo was working as an accountant, so he knew little about shoe design. But, as a sneaker devotee, he knew what he liked, and what he didn’t. He also knew that a shoe that revealed the happy socks that are so much in vogue would be an instant winner. It was difficult to find a local manufacturer that shared his confidence in this design, however. “I was turned down by 13 different factories,” he recalls, “because the mesh we used for the body of our shoes is usually just one component of a sneaker.” Finally, he found a Durban factory owner who agreed to make 100 pairs of shoes, which was all Theo could afford at the time. That number climbed to 400 – until, today, hundreds of pairs of Bathu shoes are sold every month. Theo attributes his shoes’ popularity to the fact that his story resonates with South Africans – plus, they’re proud to wear a shoe that is entirely South African, yet compares with international brands on every level, from quality to CSI activity. This is what has helped drive Bathu to become a national brand, so that Theo’s initial Newtown Junction pop-up shop now has a presence in Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Bloemfontein, Venda, Kimberley and Polokwane, with seven more stores set to open this year. From next year, Bathu goes international, with its first SADC store opening in Botswana – although Theo has plans to take his brand into East Africa, too.

y looking after our own health and focussing on pure, whole nutrition, we’re not only protecting ourselves against infections but setting up a strong foundation for better health in future and creating an excellent example for our kids. But that’s not all – by making the quality of our food a priority, we can also help support local small businesses through this crisis and well into a healthier, happier economy to come. Farm-family Jen and Chris Mills have made a life of this way of thinking. After having her thyroid removed a few years ago, Jen’s interest and attention was focussed on keeping herself and her family in the best possible health and using food to do so. As a result, Cyrus Farms was born – a collective, preordered farm produce shopping service with a brand-new deli that exists primarily to help in improving health – specifically for those who are immuno-compromised. Cyrus – three years old in August this year – provides only organic fresh produce and pasture-raised meat. This means all sources of meat are raised humanely, with unrestricted access to sunlight, fresh air and space to roam as well as fed by nature as opposed to manmade supplements. The organic veg is grown by predominantly female farmers in the Henley-on-Klip area where the Mills live. The veg is grown specifically for Cyrus and is termed heirloom – meaning the seeds used to create each season have been passed down from the same seed source of the season before. An interesting angle to the Cyrus menu is that of “keto” and low-carb eating. Convinced that by cutting out processed food and ingredients one can attain a greater level of wellbeing, Jen assists customers with taking on this lifestyle by giving them great tips as well as creating innovative, carb-friendly items. Some of these include bacon butter, keto nougat, low-carb mini pizzas and even chocolate chestnut spread.
The product list contains everything from meat – rump, sirloin, gluten-free pork bangers, lamb chops, lamb roast, wood-smoked bacon, pork chops and more – to their famous “chooks” and eggs. Pantry staples like sugar-free lime juice, honey on the comb, chia seeds as well as handmade butter and cheeses, are just some of the items you’re able to preorder. Even placing your order feels more connected – every Monday a list of the meat available is sent out to a WhatsApp group and one can pick and choose one’s own package by placing a direct order through this medium. The brand-new deli, which opened in Henley-on-Klip recently, has been created not only as a shopping experience, but as a communitycentred space where people can discuss their health journeys and receive support from one another. Cyrus Farms used to deliver to a central meeting point in Melville for all the Northern Suburb customers, but because of the lockdown will now only allow for preorder and parking lot collection from their deli. Jen urges South Africans to take this lockdown as an opportunity to get outside and get their hands dirty in the sun by planting their own seasonal veg in their yards or even in pots. To help, she’ll be giving the public tips on what to plant and when on the Cyrus Farms Facebook group as well as selling seeds through the preorder service. In every disaster, crisis and time of trial, there will be important lessons to learn, retain and apply as we move forward. Perhaps one of those lessons could be for us to slow down, to marvel in the small joys of living, and to gratefully feed our healthy bodies the very best quality, affordable fuel we can, while ensuring we’re investing in our own people, our own land and together, our collective future.

Suburb focus
Jozi’s refurbished gems Over the years, Joburg has seen many of its iconic properties renovated – some more known than others. And with the turn of the decade, we see what this trend towards reanimation has brought us in the inner city. WORDS: LYNNE MATTHYSEN

he rejuvenation of Joburg’s inner city has captured the imaginations and hearts of many. This includes the redevelopment of the famous Maboneng and Newtown precincts which have brought new life to the city.
Jewel City A more recent project is Jewel City, set to be available for occupation this year. Located in the eastern CBD between the redeveloped Maboneng Precinct and the Absa Tower Main building, the project encompasses the renovation of six city blocks into a mixed-use area, including residential and commercial spaces. The project’s development value at completion is estimated at over R1,2bn and incorporates the redevelopment of existing buildings and the construction of 40,000m2 of new property. Aimed at providing a holistic approach to mixed-use areas, the project has dedicated pedestrian routes, which includes a pedestrian walkway along Fox Street. There’s also space for a
new private high school and football grounds, which open its doors this year.
Towers Main The 30-storey Absa Tower main building is a familiar feature of the Joburg skyline. The Towers Main project sees its redevelopment on the corner of Main and Troye streets, transforming it into a mixed-use space with 519 apartments and 10,000m2 of office space, which will be leased back to Absa upon completion. With an estimated value of R400m, the redevelopment will also provide the new premises for the Absa Art Gallery, accompanied by an urban park, childcare facilities and 1,000m2 of ground-floor retail space. This development connects with Maboneng through Jewel City and continues with the pedestrian-friendly walkway. It’s due for completion this year and new residents have already started moving in.
FNB Bank City A few minutes’ walk from Towers Main and up to Simmonds Street, one finds the revamped FNB Bank City, connecting Jeppe and Pritchard streets. Unveiled during September last year, the revived space offers a variety of attractions for the public. “With about 12,000 employees on the campus and about 180,000m2, it aims to create an improved experience for shopping, restaurants and visual stimulation. This has been Phase 1 and all the buildings are going through an internal refresh,” says FNB CEO Jacques Celliers. The site also hosts the 23rd addition to the iMadiba global micro-museum project, which is supported by the Nelson Mandela Foundation. Project installations are artistic representations of former president Nelson Mandela’s Robben Island prison cell. “Homes have got things where there’s memory, where there’s been

experiences – there’s been some good and some bad days, some tears and some laughter, and some celebrations. And Bank City is FNB’s home. We’ve been here for 180 years now,” says Celliers.
Kerk Street Two blocks from Bank City, the JSE Kerk Street upgrade meets you on the part of Kerk Street which has been dedicated to pedestrians, right between the old Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and the JSE Annex buildings. This was where the JSE was housed until the year 2000 and the corridor was originally turned to pedestrian-only access to provide a direct route between the Turbine Hall, FNB Bank City and Kerk Street shops. According to the website of GREENinc, the firm that redesigned the space, the company saw this as an opportunity to re-evaluate the purpose of the square and explore the ways in which it could provide its users with a quality public open space. “The main feature of the square – a large brutalist water feature – fell into a state of disrepair and required refurbishment. It
now provides a secure, inner-city setting for outdoor events.”
Post Office The Old Rissik Street Post Office, around the corner from Bank City, is in its third phase of planned rejuvenation, which focusses on the building’s repurposing for more social use, and may include residential, office and exhibition spaces in future. Built before the turn of the 20th century, with a fourth storey added in 1905, it remains one of Joburg’s oldest buildings. Surviving a nearly devastating fire in 2009, the building was the first major government building erected in emerging Joburg and is one of the few nineteenth century buildings left in central Joburg, says a paper by the Johannesburg Historical Society which supports the preservation of the building. Described as a monument to Paul Kruger’s optimism in the future of the goldfields, it says that “Kruger must have used of the first revenue derived from the Witwatersrand Goldfields to finance the erection of this edifice.” A completion date for this project is yet to be announced.

Making your own mosaic pot to add some pizzazz to your garden is as easy as one, two, seven… WORDS: EDITORIAL TEAM

Give your pot a good wipedown with a damp cloth and leave to dry. Now is also a good time to decide what kind of pattern you want to make – structured, mishmash… the world is your oyster. If you’re working according to a design, draw it roughly on the pot.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED • • • • • • •
A smooth pot Tiles, china, cups, plates Hammer Knife Gloves Brush and cloth Mosaic adhesive

Put the tiles face down on an old towel or a work surface and break into pieces with the hammer. Put on your gloves, then mix your tile adhesive – which also acts as the grout – according to the instructions, using the knife to apply to the tile shards. Stick the tiles onto the pot in the desired place.

Remove any excess adhesive from the tiles and leave to set for 24 hours. Mix the grout with water until it’s a peanut butter consistency – or follow instructions on the packet – then apply liberally over the pot, making sure you get all into the spaces.

Wipe off any excess and leave to dry.
