Mushrooms for pink power I f you’ve been into a Pick n Pay this month, you might’ve noticed something a bit different about the mushroom punnets in the fresh produce aisle.
For the entire October, mushrooms will be sold in pink punnets in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, with R1 from each punnet sold donated to Reach for Recovery’s Ditto Project. This remarkable initiative provides silicone prostheses to women who cannot afford to purchase it themselves, let alone afford reconstructive surgery. Reach for Recovery’s management board chairperson Stephné Jacobs is passionate about the positive impact of the Power of Pink fundraising campaign and the success achieved by the Ditto Project. “Women in lowincome categories, diagnosed with breast cancer, deserve the same access to support services as anyone else. Through the Power of Pink we have the capacity to assist these women in reshaping their lives.” Partnering with Reach for Recovery is the South African Mushroom Farmers’ Association (Samfa) and Pick n Pay, who since 2010 have been tireless in their support of breast cancer survivors who find themselves in an even more difficult financial situation after a mastectomy. “Over the last nine years more than
R4m has been raised, enabling the campaign to change the lives of more than 6,000 women,” says Stephné. And if you were wondering what the connection is between mushrooms and breast cancer, mushrooms are thought to be particularly effective against breast and other hormone-related cancers because they inhibit an enzyme called aromatase, which produces oestrogen. Several types of mushrooms including white buttons and portobello varieties have indicated strong anti-aromatase activity. So, can tossing some sliced mushrooms into your salad help reduce your risk of breast cancer? “Yes,” says City of Hope’s Shiuan Chen, PhD and chair of the Department of Cancer Biology at City of Hope’s Beckman Research Institute. “Mushrooms contain compounds that prevent estrogen levels from getting too high. Since estrogen is a factor in 70% of all breast cancer cases, maintaining healthy levels of the hormone makes sense as a preventative measure.” So be sure to head to the shops this month and do your bit to support a very worthy cause. he new range – dubbed the “Haute Collection” – consists of a trio of wines from the 2017 vintage: a barrel-fermented chardonnay with a component fermented in clay amphora, a pinot noir, and a 100-percent amphora chardonnay. With chardonnay’s popularity on the rise, the addition of two still chardonnays to the estate’s line-up is sure to be welcomed. The new range was no happy accident though. Rather than stumbling upon standout batches in the cellar, von Arnim says he and winemaker Tim Hoek “are always actively looking for particular blocks on the farm that have heritage and character. The chardonnay, for instance, was the first vineyard to be planted on the farm, in 1983. It gives such amazing fruit.”
The Haute Collection Chardonnay is a blend of wines matured in both oak barrels and 450-litre clay amphorae. The result? An elegant ‘chard’ with subtle oak richness on the palate. A different offering altogether is the Haute Collection Amphora Chardonnay. Here citrus freshness and bright minerality shows just why these clay vessels are making a comeback in the winelands.

Using neutral amphorae to ferment wines from specific sites, “shows the purest expression of terroir,” says von Arnim. As with the historic chardonnay vineyard, the block chosen for the Haute Collection Pinot Noir is also remarkable. Situated higher up on the farm, on the slopes of the Middagkrans Mountain, the vineyard was planted more than 20 years ago by founder Achim von Arnim. With 10,000 vines per hectare, high by local standards, “the focus is on terroir and concentration and competition between the vines,” says Takuan. “Unless you put vines into a tight spot they don’t give you their best.” Alongside the new Haute Collection, the cellar has – just in time for summer – also released a brand-new rosé-style wine from pinot noir. With more structure than the cellar’s ever-popular chardonnay-pinot noir blend, “the new rose fits into the Haute Cabrière range beautifully,” says von Arnim. “It’s a perfect stepping stone into Pinot Noir, and really closes the circle of the wines we create.”

Basalt is the final step in The Peech’s 2018 renovation, which saw an addition to the existing hotel of 14 new rooms and a two-bedroom villa. The restaurant has some serious pedigree behind it: it’s head chef is Frederico Dias, formerly
Chef Frederico describes his menu as “contemporary global cuisine”, and aims to bring an authentic and real approach to food using local produce and a straightforward selection of entrées, mains, and desserts – with specials added as ingredients allow. This is reflected in starters such as the braised harissa-spiced purple cabbage and salted cod brandade, and mains like the pan-fried kabeljou with cauliflower,

While the hotel has always had its own small restaurant for guests, owner James Peech has now replaced that with Basalt, a restaurant targeted to both in-house guests and local Joburg patrons.

Dessert is a choice of meltingly delicious salted chocolate tart served with churros and a shot of Amarula, or local cheeses if you have less of a sweet tooth. While Basalt’s wine list is impressive, their cocktails are noteworthy and the perfect way to start the meal (or punctuate courses) – try the “Madam Melrose” with gin, dry vermouth and peach puree, the “Monsieur Spice” with bourbon, cinnamon and bitters, or the very fresh “Berranged” with rum, raspberry, lime and bitter orange. The restaurant is small and intimate, seating just 38 patrons in a sophisticated interior of cool greys, natural woods and plush velvet chairs, with a “basalt” bar on one side. Situated in the hotel’s original heritage house, the feeling of laidback luxury for which The Peech is known definitely carries through here. For James Peech and his team, Basalt marks a new chapter in the hotel’s evolution. “We’re incredibly excited about taking this opportunity to showcase our evolved food and beverage offering to guests and the addition of an exceptional dining option to the local food scene,” he says.
A look behind the lattes

here’s a scene in Abed Tau’s book where he describes one of his lowest moments: he’d woken up in the middle of the night and, hungry, made himself a snack. He’d left a job at one of South Africa’s big four accounting firms some months previously, hoping to find a pot of gold as an entrepreneur – but, instead, he was living in a tiny flat where his waterbed served as a coffee table, couch and bed. That’s where he was eating his snack, when his knife slipped and pierced the mattress. After spending fruitless hours trying to repair the waterbed, he spent what was left of the night trying to sleep on the floor, mulling over his decision to start his own business. “This is the aspect of entrepreneurialism that I wanted to highlight by writing the book. People think it’s all working from your favourite cafe, drinking lattes and listening to music on your headphones, but it’s actually incredibly unglamorous and very hard work,” Abed explains. This is something Abed learned through his ventures as a serial entrepreneur. While his businesses may have met
with varying degrees of success, each imparted a valuable lesson. “One of the most important things I learned is that if you’re starting your own business just to become rich and famous, you’ll never stick it out when things get tough. You need a really compelling ‘why’ to keep you going. I also came to realise that although we all want to start exciting, high profile companies, it’s the businesses that do the boring yet necessary stuff – the ones behind the scenes that you never really think of – that have the greatest chance of longevity and success.” Following his own advice, Abed and his partners made the move from wouldbe venture capitalists to establish Thamani, an advisory, assurance and tax services firm, before launching edu-tech app Tuta-Me. They’re now back to investing in new enterprises, having recently bought into a bakery. “The ultimate take-out from this book is that entrepreneurialism can offer you an exciting and challenging life – but you’re going to have to search through a lot of dustbins before you find that magic business idea,” Abed says.

he range of wall tricks and treatments available today means that although original artwork will never go out of fashion – nor should it – there’s an entire world of inexpensive, cost-effective or clever wall effects, other than paint, which can entirely transform a space. From wallpaper to vinyl wall art – whether it’s your own photographs or a graphic design – there’s something suitable for every room in the house or office. Brenne Downey of Resurface talks trends in wall coverings. “Currently,
there are a few, like the geometric designs that hark back to art deco. The classic pinstripe is also making a comeback, but comebacks are expected with classics. When it comes to bolder trends, we’re seeing an uptick in bright-coloured jungle scenes with stylised wildlife, emphasising colour and texture. Oversized botanicals are also trending at the moment with soft edges on a bold black background.”

Vicky Meagher is Twiggy Décor, an online store offering vinyl wall art, canvases, blocks, prints and, soon, designer wallpaper. She says South Africans are becoming more comfortable with online purchasing of decorative wall treatments. “They’re enjoying the convenience, cost savings and choice, and once they’ve had a good experience, they’re on board.”

Meagher says, “It’s an incredible way to decorate your space, is competitively priced, simple to apply, and easy to remove. The chalkboard vinyls are not only practical, but really add flair, while the frosted vinyls add stylish privacy to your windows or doors.” You can choose something really simple – a quote, a flower, a graphic… to something more abstract or intricate. Monochromatic or full colour, there’s something to enhance the space.

Downey says that although custom wallpaper with photo imagery (yours or theirs) has been around for over a decade, as high resolution printing gets better and better with technology, it’s become increasingly popular. “We have our own image bank from which you can choose, but often a client wants to use their own photo. The requirements are
a 360dpi image which is achievable with most smartphones on the right setting.”
The substrate
“When it comes to choosing a substrate on which to print,” Rowney says, “it’s all about texture. The embossed texture needs to complement, but not detract from, the printed image. The most popular is a linen texture, but it does depend on the image. It’s not always an embossed texture either – a metallic substrate gives a lustre not achievable using other substrates.”
Children’s rooms
Relatively new to the market, are interactive wallpapers, particularly for children and offices. “Magnetic and write-and-wipe features are on trend for kids rooms. Magnetic and rewritable qualities lend themselves well to making things interesting for our younger clients. This combined with map designs, stylised wildlife scenes or board games make for some hard-time choosing!”
ADVICE FOR HOMEOWNERS Downey has three hints • Golden rule: A feature wall is always better than full coverage of all your walls. • When dealing with low light in a small space, opt for a light hue and an image that offers perspective rather than a busy pattern. • If you have a large cavernous space, we advise a large-scale pattern with bold colours. If you have ample light, then darker hues work well to make the space cosier.

f you’re looking for leafy, treelined streets, comfortable standalone homes, secure estates and enough of the spruit to give the neighbourhood a greater sense of breadth, Olivedale is it. Business director Clinton Middleton has lived in the suburb for four years and believes the property there is excellent value for money. “It’s close to my work but also a stone’s throw from shopping centres and Golden Harvest Park, which is great for kids,” Clinton says.

A good mix of housing options, sectional titles and complexes allows you a wide variety of investment options. Explore On the weekend, Middleton favours the Saturday morning parkrun at Golden Harvest Park. You’ll also find his family topping up the larder at Northgate or All Saints Centre. “There’s a great family-owned store called Freshouse Market close by that has a bakery and supports small farmers who produce meat and vegetables.” If you’re looking for something a little different to do on a weekend as a team-builder or as a family, Drum Tribe is an invigorating, interactive drumming experience, with gumboot dance lessons and marimba band performances. If that doesn’t tickle your fancy, strap on a pair of skates and take to the ice at Northgate Ice Arena. Filled with kids and teens and set to loud music, it’s a great, blood-pumping alternative to a Friday night movie. Staying in for the evening is also covered with a delicious (and budgetkind) Chinese dish from Lucky Wok, which has reviews citing it as the best, authentic Chinese in Joburg. If you’re keen on dining out, Café del Sol is a winner for a private evening for two or a more celebratory meal with friends. A really lovely way to stimulate kids on weekends and holidays (and give yourself a little down-time!) are the programmes run at Olivedale Library. Story hour is a lovely way to instil a passion for reading in your little ones and often the library will host performances and shows as well. Golfers have a few options about, with Jackal Creek and Bryanston Country Club in comfortable driving distance and of course the disciplined among us will find the Virgin Active well placed for early morning starts. For families looking for convenient commuting, great schools, space for growth and a high standard of living at a fabulous price, Olivedale should be right up there on the consideration list.
