t’s tough though to hit the sweet spot between “great for kids” and “reserved for Saturday date night”. If you find yourself in this predicament, searching for a bolthole during rainy weather or a great festive meal while Eskom sheds your neighbourhood’s load, Choo Choo Junction in Linden is just the ticket. Themed “Steampunk” the gastropub is divided into three sections – a charming little outdoor verandah which is a nice spot when the weather is mild, the larger indoor restaurant and a tiny pub. The pub is small, smokey and dark and it all works rather well together under the metalwork decor.

This fun, lighthearted ambience is reflected in the menu descriptors and in the creativity of the food itself. Try a starter from the delightfully named Tong Tippy Toets list – you can have mussels steamed in lemongrass and coconut milk, or layered dips the likes of bean hummus, herb yoghurt, garlicky chickpeas and tortilla shards. Plan your dining on a Wednesday or Saturday night, however, and you’re in for the big show – Cheesy Aglio e Olio. A huge wheel of ParmigianoReggiano is set alight with brandy and the melted cheese scraped off. Linguine is then tossed in and coated and topped off with a lemon sauce – perfect for a cooler autumnal evening.
Great burgers, flat breads, steaks and a broader pasta menu are also available as well as ribs and wings made on the smoker on Saturdays. A solid wine list and fashionable cocktails keep the energy upbeat, and the service is excellent – welltrained and friendly servers are happy to charge your phone, move your table, and make changes to the food according to your palate and allergies. Given its central location, its wide menu and cheerful staff and ultimately cool vibe, Choo Choo is a fabulous spot for celebrations – think Saturday afternoon birthday lunches, kick-off drinks for a hen’s party, or even an end-of-work Christmas do – whatever the reason, it’s absolutely worth a visit.

or the first time ever, a South African retailer has been awarded as the Single Outlet Retailer of the Year at the 2020 Icons of Whisky Awards held annually by Whisky Magazine in London. The definitive speciality whisky store, WhiskyBrother in Hyde Park, took the honours and will now compete against the country winners of Scotland, America, Ireland, India and Australia for the World Icon title which recognises establishments, producers and people in the whisky industry from across the globe. The awards are split into six regions, with South Africa competing in the first round, in the Rest of the World category which comprises countries such as England, mainland Europe, Canada, Japan and Taiwan, to name but a few. “Our goal has always been to provide a world-class service to South African whisky drinkers, and this award recognises our efforts,” says Neil Paterson, whisky extraordinaire and co-owner of WhiskyBrother. “In the world of whisky, exceptional quality, craft and niche products are the cornerstones of discerning whisky enjoyment. Our retail store aims to
offer beyond what’s generic and high volume, and to open up a whole new world of whisky appreciation for everyone – whether they’re novices or whisky aficionados, we have the expert knowledge and variety to guide them on an exciting whisky journey.” WhiskyBrother opened its doors in 2012 and offers over 600 unique whiskies from around the globe for sale, including special bottlings and exclusive limited releases selected by the WhiskyBrother team, often while on their regular trips to Scotland. The store is reminiscent of a whisky
maturation warehouse with touches of copper, oak and casks for an ultimate whisky shopping experience. Since opening the store, WhiskyBrother has expanded to an online shop which delivers dozens of orders each week across South Africa and opened Joburg’s first and only dedicated whisky bar, the WhiskyBrother Bar in Morningside, where they currently have more than 1,300 whiskies, and counting, available to taste from around the world. T
he global industry is redefining a new African culture and design language, and it’s energising. We’re moving beyond the European renaissance era to embrace a new vernacular that’s modern, sustainable and relevant. Our international counterparts are looking to the African continent for design influence, and they’re finding a distinct design philosophy that translates across the world. It’s exciting to see this trend gaining traction, and especially right here at home. As an African, an indigenous design aesthetic resonates with you on a subconscious level. It conjures up a familiarity that you connect with and find comfort in. Africanism in design is very organic; it’s referenced by textures in our landscapes and rituals in our homes. Architect Francis Kéré’s work illustrates excellent examples of how this aesthetic plays out in popular design. His 2017 Serpentine Pavilion in London’s Kensington Gardens takes inspiration from an enormous tree in his hometown in Gando, Burkina Faso. The space is a symbol of storytelling and togetherness,
drawing people and nature together to create a sense of community. Then Ikea’s Överallt’s collection, launched at the 2019 Design Indaba, reveals again how the African ethos is cultivating innovation and creativity in the design space. Featuring products designed by Africans, all tell a story that is quintessentially African. Like the rugs made from recycled chip packets, textile fibre inspired by the tradition of weaving hair, and a bench designed to encourage human connection. Another example can be found in the Freedom Park Museum in Pretoria. With design inspiration taken from nature, its walls and roof are cladded in rich copper sheeting which will, in time, rust to green, ensuring the building merges with the natural landscape. This is Africanisation in design. It encompasses a simplistic sophistication with responsible, functional, original ideas at its core. We’ve retired the Ndebele cliché to introduce a new breed of design (and designer) committed to exploring the rich heritage in our African roots and taking this design narrative to the next level. The world is ripe for a fresh perspective.

New transfer duty threshold good news D
uring last week’s budget speech, finance minister Tito Mboweni announced tax relief across the board, with the bulk going to taxpayers earning less than R500,000 a year. Good news for the property market is the adjustment of the threshold for transfer duty, with no duty payable on property priced R1m or less, says Pam Golding Property group CEO Andrew Golding. The increase in the transfer duty
threshold is an incentive for first-time buyers and those seeking affordably priced homes – a key sector in the current market. “It’ll help stimulate transactions in this price band, increasing volumes and creating a ripple effect across the market in general, which, in turn, will benefit government income generation.” He says the trend towards energysaving features will gain momentum as homeowners across all sectors
reduce their reliance on Eskom or even go completely off the grid to alleviate already tight budgets. “This is becoming an economic imperative especially as the costs of such features become more accessible to a broader public. Developers and landlords will focus increasing attention on reducing municipal costs for services such as electricity and water as much as possible to make their offerings more appealing to tenants.”
Demand gives rise to more affordable homes T
he high demand for affordable housing and easier lending conditions are behind the launch of developments such as Ihlathi in Parklands, Cape Town. The offering at this entry-level gated community ranges from one-bedroom apartments starting from R689,999 to penthouse units at R1,2m including transfer costs. Developed by International Housing Solutions (IHS), a global private equity fund focussed on property
priced below R1,5m, Ihlathi is the fund’s ninth gated community project. It borders a nature reserve and offers environmentally friendly technologies that use 20% less electricity and water, as well as excellent security and annual capital growth of up to 10%. According to Toni Enderli, head, Realtor of Excellence, the trend is likely to continue as stock in this sector is limited. “Some banks have responded to the demand by offering 100% finance because they
see the entry-level sector as an incubator for growth,” he says.
IHS’s MD for SA, Rob Wesselo, says the affordable housing market will keep growing, especially in Parklands, which is less than 20km from the CBD, with easy access to schools, shops, work opportunities and some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Ihlathi’s Phase 1, the first 102 apartments of a total of 384, will be ready for occupation by early 2021.

“I
moved here when I worked in Bedfordview as it was more convenient than travelling from where I was – so it was the commute to begin with. But four and a half years later and I’m really settled in the culture of the place,” says Thapelo Mmoloke, a senior digital designer and resident of Kempton Park West.
The area Thapelo has found that the core of the city is mainly made up of apartment blocks, but as you move outside of this busy hub, more and more freestanding houses can be found. The suburb forms part of the Ekurhuleni Municipality and is close to Tembisa as well as the two massive industrial suburbs Spartan and Isando. It’s also famous for being an “airport city” which means developments pop up fast to provide accommodation and facilities for travellers. The hard-working nature of the suburb shouldn’t put families off though – while it’s a busy space, that also means jobs are available and constantly being created, homes are new and modern and affordable for many, and the outlying areas provide lots of entertainment and nature escapes for the weekends.
Schools For people with school-going kids, Kempton Park can offer Westside Primary School, Norkem Park Primary, Solid Foundations Primary, and Birch Acres Primary. Highschoolers can attend Hoërskool Kempton Park, Hoërskool Rhodesfield, Sonrise Christian School and Spartan High School, among a number of other options. The airport itself offers a bunch of exciting retailers (as well as a few nice places to eat and drink) and Kempton Gate Mall should satisfy any broader errands you may need to run. Arwyp Medical Centre has you covered for any aches or pains and you will be able to have Spot or Fido treated at Kempton Veterinary Hospital.
Out and about In the city’s centre there’s what Thapelo calls a real pub-hopping culture on a Friday and Saturday night. From cafes to bars and then to pool halls and clubs, Pretoria Street is the place to be if you’re child-free and wanting to let your hair down after a tough week. Another big drawcard for Kempton Park is its gastronomy.
Many restaurants serve different takes on African food, some with a European flair and some made in the traditional style we know, love and miss from home. If you’re looking for some tripe or the area’s best samp, give Ha Maloi Opulent Cuisine a visit – or if it’s a combo of bar and eatery you’re after, then pop into Innocent Pub and Grill for a juicy steak and some fantastic DJs. When the kids are a little too hyper or you’d like an afternoon of fresh air, head out to Swartspruit Recreational Area, where you can walk the trail that’s just shy of 5kms, have a picnic by the dam, and spot all the different kinds of bird species so prolific in the area. You’re also able to perfect your swing at the 18-hole golf course and enjoy a postgame lunch in the pub. Emperor’s Palace is, of course, a tempting way to spend a rainy payday weekend. Catch a movie or even a live show at the Barnyard Theatre, have lunch at any of the restaurants, or try your luck at the casino. Kempton Park provides so much for so many – the professional starting out, the young family and even the retired who want a lock-upand-go and access to the outlying nature, the thrill of the Palace, the convenience of the airport, and the warmth of a real, African mini-city.
