A

couple of months ago, we spent the night at a beautiful house in Kalk Bay. Award after award for something called “Catherine Marshall Pinot Noir” adorned the walls inside. Intrigued, I was going to ask the owner about it when she came to say hello, but when she introduced herself as Catherine, I put two and two together – here was the winemaker, owner and force behind Catherine Marshall Wines. And because we’re celebrating the matriarchs of South African wine this week, I thought it would only be fitting to get Cathy’s input. Q: How did you start in the wine industry? A: It was as a student at Stellenbosch University in the late 1980s when the landscape of wine production was very different, with little to no great winemaking infrastructure, particularly for a woman winemaker. I went on to work at various wine farms to earn some extra money. I read a lot, attended short courses at the KWV and then joined later. After university I worked as an intern for a few years, then travelled to the US (Sonoma and Oregon), France (Bordeaux and Burgundy) and Australia to get some experience. Q: Describe your approach to winemaking. A: Vineyard site selection, grower compatibility, minimal wine additive intervention, natural, restrained, classic European, and vegan. Q: Tell us more about Catherine Marshall Wines. A: CMW officially started in 1997 as a garage project – we’re instrumental in formulating the Garagiste movement, but we’re too large to be a part of it today. All our grapes are grown in the cool Elgin climate with four different growers providing me with high-quality grapes. Q: Your labels are very unique; what’s the story? A: The artist Hannetjie de Clercq and I met in 1997. My labels then were really poor and she offered to paint individual portrait labels for the brand. At the time I was inspired by Mouton Rothschild’s famous artist labels for each vintage. Nothing like this was being done in SA at the time, so the bright artistic label for my first pinot noir that hit the shelves in 1998 really stood out, and that’s how we became known.

Q: What is your favourite wine? A: Comte de Vogue les Amoureuses Pinot Noir (from Burgundy) or most high-end burgundy. Q: Do you think women bring something different to the winemaking process? A: Naturally they do, but I like the collaboration of both women and men as each have their strengths. I trained with some of the world’s best winemakers who are men and have adapted my style that definitely is softer and more restrained.

ounded in 1887 in Joburg’s heady gold rush days, the Rand Club is one of the city’s most enduring social institutions – and one of its most beautiful heritage buildings from the Edwardian era. Up until just a few months ago, the club was open to members only, retaining an air of exclusivity that has endured over the past 100-odd years. Non-members lucky enough to visit during a private tour would get a glimpse of the grand interior with its sweeping wooden staircase, plush carpets, rich antiques and artworks. After realising the club needed another strategy to remain sustainable – especially after a fire in 2005 damaged much of the top floor – events management company Masiwela Management began renting out parts of the club for weddings and private events a few years ago. The latest development to this is a restaurant that opened to

Q: How do you think our local wines compare to international wines? A: Having been in the industry before, during and after the advent of the new kids on the block, I can say we’re making world-class wines at very affordable pricing – which is sometimes too cheap and to the detriment of our industry. We’re still being perceived as entry-level status internationally and too few of our really special wines are not getting the right exposure, although Tim Atkin (UK-MW) and Wine Cellar are doing a magnificent job in trying to rectify this issue.

the public at the beginning of March, in partnership with French Corner Catering. Located in the downstairs main bar, the elegant space is framed by large stained-glass windows and a sweeping wooden bar – which still holds the accolade of the longest bar in Africa. Open from Tuesdays to Saturdays for lunch and dinner, the restaurant’s bistro menu offers light meals – from wraps and salads to more substantial dishes like pork skewers, line fish, burgers and good old bangers and mash. “The focus is on an easy, uncomplicated à la carte menu that’s accessible to the general public but still appeals to existing members,” says Brandon Clifford, the club’s business development director. Once the restaurant is more established, there are plans for a seasonal menu and smaller snack menus to accompany after-work drinks in the cigar lounge and ladies lounge. As has been the case since it was first built, the Rand Club is the perfect location for business meetings, which makes it perfect for surrounding banks and corporates – whether they use it for client lunches or business meetings over drinks after the working day is over. While the main bar and other downstairs rooms are open to the public, upstairs venues such as the ballroom, library and the billiards room are still strictly reserved for members only. “This is an iconic building that we hope will attract people wanting a really authentic experience,” says Brandon. Perhaps no other venue in Joburg better epitomises the glamour of the city’s early gold rush days, and now with its wider accessibility, even more Joburg residents can enjoy it.

Matriachs of the vine What better way to celebrate Mother’s Day than opening a bottle honouring the great females of the wine world WORDS: RICHARD HOLMES IMAGES: SUPPLIED

F

ew women have made as much of a mark on the world of champagne as Elisabeth “Lily” Bollinger. Widowed in 1941 at the age of 42, she was quick to take the reins of the champagne house into which she had married, guiding it through German occupation during World War II, and later establishing Champagne Bollinger as one of the most sought-after brands on the planet. Lily Bollinger is also famous for her cheeky line about the best time to pour a glass of bubbly. “I drink it when I’m happy and when I’m sad. Sometimes I drink it when I’m alone. When I have company, I consider it obligatory. I trifle with it if I’m not hungry and drink it when I am. Otherwise, I never touch it – unless I’m thirsty.” If you’re thirsty this Mother’s Day, the Bollinger Brut Special Cuvée, a non-vintage blend of pinot noir, chardonnay and pinot meunier is a fine celebratory choice. Rickety Bridge is something of a hidden gem in the Franschhoek winelands, quietly drawing a crowd to its laid-back restaurant and tasting room. It’s a fine spot to discover their flagship range honouring Paulina de Villiers, the original owner of the property in the late-1700s. Alongside the semillon and cabernet sauvignon is the delicious 100% chenin blanc, crafted from low-yielding Franschhoek vines, barrel-fermented and aged in an oak foudre and small oak casks to deliver a wine with a great balance of tannin structure and fruit. If you have a few bottles to cellar, it’ll be even better at next year’s Mother’s Day lunch. Catharina Ras was a formidable woman. Arriving in the Cape in 1662, she outlasted a succession of hapless husbands and become a pioneer in the southern Peninsula with her Constantia farm – then dubbed Swaaneweide – a popular stop on the wagon route to the coast. Today these lands are called Steenberg, but Catharina’s story lives on in this delicious Bordeaux-inspired blend. The foundation is merlot, but dollops of syrah and petit verdot deliver delicious spice and tannin to the wine.

apenhagen. Wild Coast. Cape to Cali. Are these just words to you, or can you spot a theme? Well done if you can, because it’s pretty obscure: they’re all cross-continental collaboration beers, made in a partnership between a local South African brewery – Devil’s Peak, Drifter and Riot – and an international counterpart – Mikkeller, Migration and Stone. The latest beer to come out of this trend is called 10,000 Miles, a fresh hop ale co-created by Newlands Spring Brewing Company in Cape Town and Elysian Brewing Company in Seattle. The two creatives in charge were Elysian ingredient specialist Markus Stinson and Newlands Spring brewer Warren Wiese. Their goal: to devise a recipe that would showcase unique hops from both countries. After some arm wrestling, the pair settled on a wet-hop beer, which would require picking and using fresh hops within six hours. Evidently they were up for a challenge, as instead of opting to brew in Seattle, which has hop fields a breezy two-and-ahalf hours away in Washington, they decided to brew in Cape Town, a solid four-and-a-half hours away from the country’s only hop fields in George. This amazing race started one autumn day in March, when our two heroes charged up the Garden Route and ferociously threw 70kg of hops into their vehicle. Although under

pressure, Warren still managed to maintain standards. “They had an incredibly fresh smell and you could see the quality was great,” he said. Following – in my imagination, anyway – a hairy trip back to the Mother City, Warren and Markus started brewing. The result? “A smooth and mediumrounded, fruity IPA-style fresh-hop beer,” says Warren. ‘It has an intriguing nose of ripe mango, passion fruit, some grassy notes, a little guava, some light lemon hints and red berries and on the palate a medium-low sweetness, balanced with a firm bitterness and a light honey-malt character.” And the significance of the name? You guessed it: it’s the distance between the two breweries, although one might argue that the distance between George and Cape Town might have been a better bet.

A

re we loving local, or is international it? Nicole Black of Black Fabrics considers South Africans, as a rule, to be very much in tune with international trends but not slaves to them. “Black Fabrics is really active on Facebook and Instagram, with both local and international trends reflected in our collections. We have a prolific range of fabrics and wallpapers from foremost international brands, but if not appropriate to the client’s home, we often use one of the fabrics or wallpapers for colour, print or texture as a jumping-off point to help pull together a scheme.” Black says they combine international ranges with Black Fabrics’ branded fabric to keep the cost palatable. “Currently, the most popular textured weaves and velvets are in high demand with international prints. Popular colours are still navy or cobalt blue, combined with jades – the hues might change from darks to soft blues, sage greens or bright green and white. “Generally people are still loving blush pink as an accent colour, or they combine coral with terracotta which is spot on trend… don’t confuse it with the peach and green of the 1980s! Popular printed themes lean towards flamingos and botanicals, fresh and bold geometrics redolent of retro chic, as in our Scion or Orla Kiely collections with a Scandi feel.” She also points to “freehand brushstrokes which dictate a more relaxed living, even though they are in gorgeous fabrics like the Harlequin Atelier collection”. Melissa Kerkhoff of Lula Fabrics acknowledges that South Africans follow European trends for design and palette but believes we’re increasingly more discerning now. “We choose fabrics that please – origin unimportant. There are also those who support local and are loyal to South African designers – some foreigners too, who love to buy from local designers.” Kerkhoff says South Africans are loving interior fabrics treated for outdoor use, because that’s our lifestyle – we choose patio entertaining. “There’s a strong trend towards oversized bright florals like our Thai floral and Memphis design, which has made a comeback in retro pastel tropical leaves, our delicious monster leaf print (2007), and our palm frond design (2009) are big favourites,

as are tribal designs like Suzani designs – our Bukhara (2017). Colours on trend are the ‘living coral’ which is the Pantone Colour of the Year in all shades teamed with mint greens, sage and teal.”

Upholstery

Black considers today’s upholstery favourites to be durable weaves or textured plains with patterned scatters. “Practical slip or loose covers are still popular in plain linens or linen combinations.” Kerkhoff has seen a mix of upholstery trends recently, focussing on inverted seams either left fluffy or overlocked, insert flat piping or lip in a contrasting colour, and slip covers in a more formal structure.

Velvet

“If there’s one texture that adds opulence and elegance to a room, it’s velvet with its tactile qualities and luscious good looks. It’s been growing in popularity for the past few years, and this year it’s set to be one of the biggest trends,” says Shotland. “Following current trends of tactile fabrics, Moulin Rouge (FibreGuard) offers two velvet qualities, namely Lech – a shimmering lustrous ground that brings to mind timeless chinois silk velvets – and Deluxe, a dry, subtly textured matt quality reminiscent of cotton velvets. Both qualities are perfect for high traffic areas such as family rooms.” He adds, “If you love the look of velvet, you don’t have to go all dramatic and dark. It works really well with softer blush tones and contrasts beautifully with other textural fabrics such as wool and linen.”

Ombre

If you’re on the hunt for some really trendy curtains, Shotland believes ombre is the way to go. “Ombre curtains are set to make your living space look lively and colourful, but not too vivid or overwhelming. We love Designer Guild’s Saraille collection of wide width linen-look ombre fabrics which work perfectly for curtaining.”

lose enough to the city centre to gain some of its energy but far enough away to be truly suburban, this area is one of the oldest in Joburg. It was named after Auckland in New Zealand by the original farmer and was considered to be a country escape back in the late 1800s. This suburb is a particularly interesting mix of education, history, design and entertainment, for a number of reasons. The University of Johannesburg is situated here, as well as Milpark Business School, which means the student life adds a lot of colour and energy to everyday life. Just next to Auckland Park is ubercool Melville – a real hot spot for entertainment, dinner, drinks and long lunches. If you’re keen on a little nightlife, pop into Hell’s Kitchen for great music and an alternative crowd of both young and young at heart. You’ll be at a loss to choose where to lunch if that’s more your speed, with The Great Eastern Food Bar, Pablo Eggs-Go-Bar and La Stalla all offering spectacular fare. Younger members of the family will enjoy a picnic in the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Greenside or a few hours at the Johannesburg Planetarium to watch a show of our stars.
