The Eat Out Mercedes-Benz Best Everyday Eateries recognise a wider range of casual restaurants and now diners have a chance to vote for their favourite.

This is the fifth year the country’s favourite restaurants will be rewarded for their consistently good food, with results based on a 50-50 score from the public and Eat Out’s professional critics. The winners will be announced at events on 17 September in Joburg and 25 September in Cape Town.

While the vagaries of the harvest are up to the weather gods, Rudiger could control which vineyard he chose to make what would become the cellar’s flagship bubbly. And for him, there was only one option: chardonnay from the famed Kaaimansgat (Crocodile’s lair) vineyards outside Villiersdorp.
And that’s just what you want when turning chardonnay into MCC. With the grapes harvested at night to preserve their flavour and acidity, the fruit was fermented with natural, wild yeasts in large 2,500-litre foudres, an upright wooden vat. It was then aged for three years on the lees, balancing acidity, fruit and freshness. It’s also a bubbly built to last, and over time more brioche, biscuity notes will evolve to balance the citrus flavours. For Rudiger it’s simply about expressing a sense of time and space. “The vineyards grow in a specific place and this wine is unique to that.” Whether you enjoy it with shellfish, wild mushrooms or mature cheese soufflé, buy a bottle and raise a toast to one of South Africa’s most famous vineyards.
To vote for their favourite local eateries, restaurant-goers can download the Eat Out app or visit eatout.co.za to rate and review the restaurants they’ve visited the last year. Diners can submit reviews for as many restaurants as they wish, but only one review per person per restaurant will count. The public and Eat Out critics’ ratings from 1 September last year to 31 July this year will be tallied to determine a shortlist for each of the categories per province. If a critic has not recently been to a restaurant that received enough public reviews, critics will have

Breaking ground Interior designer Nthabi Taukobong’s new book, The Real Interior, is less a memoir than a map of her journey into a deeper understanding of her industry, and herself WORDS: LISA WITEPSKI

N
o one ever changed the world by making a room look pretty – but maybe they could. That’s the insight that prompted Nthabi Taukobong to take another look at her career; a career that’s stood as an inspiration for many aspiring local designers. In many ways, she has always felt her career has been “divinely led”. “As a child, I used to cut out pictures of hotels – and, as it turned out, my first job was in the hospitality sector,” she recalls. Nthabi’s name has since become synonymous with this niche – but the glamour and beauty of the design industry eventually wore thin. “I grew tired of the pretence and show of this job,” she reflects. “After 21 years of beautifying spaces, I felt jaded. Something was missing. And then, one of my clients told me that the room I had designed was all very nice, but it needed a touch of nature. My initial reaction was – what do you mean? Do you want me to go to Weylandts and buy a tree stump? But thinking over the request led me to realise that true design is about simplifying, and embracing the imperfections. That’s how you bring about balance.”

rban Moyo recently opened in Sandton’s 24 Central, as an urban twist on the wellestablished Moyo group of Africaninspired restaurants in Joburg, Cape Town and Durban. Where Moyo is more traditional African, Urban Moyo brings a new layer of urban sophistication, catering to surrounding corporates for weekday lunches, and local and international visitors over weekends who are looking for creative African cuisine in a trendy environment. We chatted to the team to find out more. Q: What’s Urban Moyo’s take on live-fire cooking? A: What could be more African than cooking over an open flame! Our specially-designed open flame grills utilising mopane wood coals are used to give a smoky chargrilled complexity to each dish. Q: Tell us about the owner, Gugu Zuma? A: Gugu is an acclaimed actress, TV and film producer and entrepreneur whose most recent business endeavour has found her in the
restaurant industry. She’s a creative with a passion for entertainment. Opening this restaurant has combined her passion for good food and wine with her desire to create memorable and unique experiences. Q: Who is behind the food? A: Our group development chef for Fournews is Ane van Zyl and together with our food support specialist, they support the kitchen team at Urban Moyo who are responsible for delivering the food experience. Ane has worked at Fournews for seven years and is responsible for the food development of a number of different brands. Q: What would you say are standout items on your menu? A: Our flamed sirloin on the bone is really popular, served with field mushrooms and spinach salad, breaded herb crumb, Madagascan green peppercorn and a piquant pepper sauce. Then there are our turmeric yoghurt-marinated deboned
chicken thighs with masala gravy, crushed aloo, poppadum, roasted carrot salad and green chutney. Lastly, our Gin & Tonic dessert is a big hit – it’s made up of G&T cheesecake, dark chocolate biscuit crumb, mango sorbet, ganache drops and Cape gooseberries. Q: Tell us about your cocktail menu? A: Our signature cocktails are nine cocktails each representing a province in South Africa, and we use various ingredients and creative vessels to tell a story for each province. The Free State is one of the more popular ones – it’s made with KWV five-year-old brandy, apricot, naartjie juice, lemon juice, bitters and apricot foam. Q: What was the inspiration behind the decor? A: Urban Moyo is a tribute to Africa – from the ingredients and flavours used in the menus, to the textures and materials used to create this store. It pays homage to what’s beautiful and sophisticated about modern Africa.
This is the sentiment she set out to convey when she penned what she at first envisaged as a social media post. “You reach a point in your career when you need to share what you’ve learned. As a black designer, I wanted to get real, to let others see my scars, so that they could relate to
my pain and joy, and maybe find some healing in their own creative crisis.” With so much to convey, that Facebook post evolved into a book – which has, in turn, changed Nthabi’s approach to design. “My first job after completing the book was redesigning my own space. This was a priority, because I need to understand what I stand for in design before I try to help other people.” The process has honed a new understanding of design, which sees it rooted in psychology rather than simply the pursuit of aesthetic appeal. It’s about the impact you have on that space, and vice versa – healing through design, as Nthabi puts it. Her next step is to find new local designers who will help to carry her mantle. “If I don’t nurture the next generation, my legacy will have failed,” she says. And, after that, she plans to extend her handcrafted African luxury range, as well as sharing her insights on the industry through talks. “When you’ve climbed the mountain, it’s your duty to share the view,” she concludes.

ffices today are about flexibility in both private and collaborative areas. They’re healthier, people-centric and feel more like home. Three local office designers are upping the ante.
Environmentally friendly
Peet van Straaten of Raw Studios is a passionate and uncompromising furniture design whizz who has worked in the Netherlands and studied green architecture in the UK. Having witnessed how environmentally damaging some production processes can be, he’s determined to keep his products earth-friendly. His beautifully crafted modular office furniture systems
are made from birch plywood grown in sustainably managed forests in Finland. They embody his philosophy – in tune with the new thinking – that offices should be healthy peoplewelcoming environments. Employees should be surrounded by natural materials that are not harmful. Van Straaten’s simple, elegant structures can be combined in different ways and are found in the offices of companies such as I-CAT, the Pretoria environmental solutions company, Nando’s head office in Joburg, KwaZuluNatal’s legendary Africa Centre for Population Health, MTN and the SABS. He says companies serious about
retaining talent are giving staff light, colourful workspaces that encourage productivity. “Office design is moving away from open floor plans where everyone is thrown into one space, towards something in the middle – not cubicles, but soft areas beyond the essential focus work areas,” says Van Straaten. “Offices are creating agile spaces that encourage change and enable new ways of working without restrictions.”
Colour is king
Alice Hutton of Alice Hutton Studios is a skilled professional who spent 23 years designing corporate workplaces for O’Sullivan & Company, including Investec offices in London and New York. Now Hutton has opened her own Joburg-based interior design studio. Hutton says biophilic design is behind her award-winning office installation. This hot new industry topic refers to the innate need to connect with nature. “I used systems of natural colours inspired by Joburg’s urban forest,” she says, “a brightly coloured lounger as a focal point, positioned on an innovative urban-inspired moss and cobbled contract carpet.” Usually working in collaboration with savvy and imaginative young local designers who she believes challenge top international brands with their quality and creativity, Hutton chose, in this case, Dokter and Misses and Monique Vee. She says contemporary South African offices are becoming increasingly comfortable and more human. Because they feel more like home, they lead to a more productive environment. She sees technology integration totally changing offices. “Technology allows for freedom of movement away from the desk. This flexibility allows for more multipurpose
office environments and furniture. So we can design more creative office spaces. Collaborative hot-desking and more relaxed lounge-like meeting spaces create a more approachable and shared open work space.”
Moving away from the traditional
Rachel Andrews of Tetris says office walls are no longer merely functional, but an opportunity to boost productivity or make a brand statement. She is head of design at the Joburg offices of Tetris, a global design and build fit-out company, and has degrees in both interior design and mechanical engineering. “At AIG insurance company we were asked to create an interior with a ‘splash of colour’. We took this literally on the wall in their breakaway coffee area,” she says. “The client loved this interpretation of the brief and says it helps create the vibrancy they wanted for the office environment.” In her view a growing number of office designers are realising that diverse work models and generations require a balance of diverse workspaces. “Staff now operate not only from traditional workstations, but often throughout the office in breakaway areas which are strategic spaces for companies to heighten productivity. “A key way to bring nature into an office is by a series of screening walls constructed as shelves dotted with plants to add greenery and light,” Andrews says. Or by creating a space for a living wall, as done for Hannover Re reinsurance group. An effective brand statement for the law firm Herbert Smith Freehills was made by embedding a section of the company’s logo into the timber wall panelling in the area where clients wait.

ultigenerational living has been a growing trend in SA for economic and security reasons, but also because three, or even four generations living in close proximity promotes a healthy social balance. Lifestyle estates are increasingly embracing young, old and everyone in between, in sectional title homes as well as rental apartments, comprising facilities that cater to children, working adults and those in their golden years, and providing convenience and security. “Mixed-use developments are a relatively new phenomenon in SA, but globally they’ve been trending for many years,” says Amdec Property Developments’ MD Nicholas Stopforth. “It’s called new urbanism, and it’s today’s lifestyle of choice. The demand is high, because they also offer excellent investment opportunities,” says Stopforth.

Lifestyle estates such as Steyn City in Midrand, Sibaya Coastal Precinct in KwaZulu-Natal and Val de Vie in the Western Cape have all gone this route, offering an enviable lifestyle replete with nearby schools, shops, medical or care facilities, and every manner of sport or leisure activity.

“The apartments and shops will be wheelchair-friendly and children have the option to attend Steyn City School,” says Marie Yossava, spokesperson, Steyn City. “There are several play and recreational nodes within the parkland residence, including a skate park for teens. The prestigious Val de Vie estate near Paarl in the Cape winelands has also embraced retirees more fully with Val de Vie Evergreen. It’s aimed at over 60s with the offer of 400 exclusive homes, 208 apartments and an 80-bed frail care facility. “Our resident demographics are evenly split between those

Century City near Canal Walk is another sought-after multigenerational estate, offering contemporary penthouses, family homes and spacious apartments. Buh-Rein Estate near Durbanville is attracting firsttime buyers to its townhouses and apartments, as well as retirees who have a choice of independent-living and assisted-living apartments.
Eastern Cape The mixed-use, multigenerational estate has come to Port Elizabeth in Amdec’s Westbrook Estate. The development will comprise 3,500 homes spread across nine residential villages with a “town square” and a variety of commercial and retail space.

In East London, Kidds Beach Green Estate comprises six estates with homes ranging in price from R700,000 to R10m. The estate caters to growing families, investors and luxury buyers. Amenities include private schools, a shopping centre, office parks, a private hospital, a high-performance sports centre and a hotel and conference centre. An assisted-living section offering 200 retirement rental units based on the life rights model is planned.
KZN The KwaZulu-Natal northern seaboard is dotted with multigenerational estates. Sibaya Coastal Precinct in Umhlanga includes Shoreline Sibaya, which consists of 400 modern single-level sectional title apartments for over 55s in a wheelchair-friendly environment. “Research from the Retire KZN campaign indicates that approximately 43% of retirees now look for a property price point of between R1m and R2,5m. The studio apartments at Shoreline Sibaya start at R1,4m while one-bedroom apartments begin at R1,9m,” says Louise Hunt, spokesperson for Sibaya Coastal Precinct. “Because of the increasing interest in retirement property as an investment opportunity, the developers have permitted buyers as young as 20, although occupation only occurs once the homeowner turns 55,” says Hunt.
Phases Kindlewood Estate in Mount Edgecombe attracts a full range of investors, from first-time buyers looking to establish their roots through to retired couples seeking an active, outdoor lifestyle. “Kindlewood has homes and facilities suited to every phase of life,” says Mondli Msani, development manager, Tongaat Hulett Developments. Kindlewood developments include Norfolk Valley, The Links, Kindlewood Crest, The Kindles, Kariwood, Edenwood, The Wolds and the newly launched Mount Edgecombe Retirement Village. Zimbali Lakes Resort north of Ballito extended its cross-generational appeal as Evergreen Lifestyle launched a R3bn retirement offering last year. Evergreen Lifestyle Zimbali Lakes includes apartments to be sold on a life rights basis and an array of luxury lifestyle amenities is in the pipeline. Close by is Brettenwood Coastal Estate, with its retirement offering of Forest Village. Further north, Palm Lakes Family Estate, a development with a full suite of facilities, includes the Lakes Retirement Village, which tailor-makes a retirement home package to suit individual needs. These range from full title homes to sectional title. The development includes a healthcare centre.
