ide-hailing apps have become synonymous with us South Africans going about our busy daily lives. We rely on them to get to work, travel to functions and get home safely. These apps have revolutionised how grownups get from A to B, but what about kids?
The logistics of most parents’ schedules are complicated to say the least. Lifting children to and from school or making plans for an unexpected schedule change can throw out an entire day. So, in a bid to help busy parents across the country, the first ride-hailing app purely for scholar transport has now launched in SA. The app is the brainchild of Tiffini Hein, MD, Cool (kids’) Cabs – a scholar transport provider in Gauteng. The app allows parents to book all their children’s lifts in advance, or on an ad-hoc basis, all in a matter of minutes. “There’s a very real need in this country to help busy parents balance it all. We’ve been providing our service for over 10 years, currently servicing over 205 schools daily, and we felt that it was time to develop the technology to make our safe scholar transport even more accessible. It’s peace of mind at your fingertips,” says Hein. So, how does it work? With the highest security in place the app allows you to enter your child’s information, detailing their drop off and collection points and times as well as allocated guardians who you trust to sign for your child upon collection. The drivers will not leave until your child is safely with one

aving cut their teeth on gin, so to speak, Hope Distillery founders Lucy Beard and Leigh Lisk have successfully branched out into other artisanal liquors in recent times. Their newly branded Hope Small Batch Vodka, distilled from a grape base sourced in the Western Cape, is a delicate balance of pot-stilled and rectified spirit. A natural complement to the initial products in the range – the process of making vodka is not unlike that of making gin – the vodka neatly dovetails into their existing production line and long-term vision. “Gin starts life as vodka – essentially a high-strength neutral alcohol – so it made sense for us to make vodka, considering that we were already making gin,” says Lucy. Where it differs is that, for gin, you simply distil the vodka one more time together with the botanicals, one of which is the juniper berry, and this is what defines it as gin. Vodka can be produced using a variety of raw materials, but the Hope team initially decided to concentrate on a grape-based spirit for theirs. “We thought about releasing both a grain and a grape vodka (we used to make our own grain base spirit for the London Dry and African Botanical gins), but we decided to go only with the grape,” says Lucy. The vodka distillation process is not without its challenges. Unlike gin, in which the botanicals have a huge impact on flavour and mouthfeel, you only have the distillation process and water to play with. “In vodka, the key element is smoothness and both the distillation process and the blending water used are integral to this,” explains Lucy. “We also only use a small part of the distillation and blend this with water from the Table Mountain aquifer. This ensures that our vodka is smooth enough to be sipped on ice.” Unlike gin, vodka doesn’t allow for much experimentation, and the technical nature of the distilling means that flavour must be established without the use of botanicals. According to Lucy, it’s far more of a purist process than gin. “You need to extract smoothness, purity and hints of flavour from the underlying alcohol, which is far more difficult,” she asserts.

The safety features in the app mirror the standard features of the Cool (kids’) Cabs service. “We provide only female drivers who are extensively vetted and trained in childcare, 24/7 live tracking on every trip, onboard cameras, properly installed car seats and daily safety checks on all vehicles,” says Hein. “We’re acutely aware, especially in this country, of the real need to ensure our children are safe at all times when we can’t be with them. That’s why our team is so obsessed with safety and why our app is a direct extension of that. Parents need a service that is 100% reliable but also one that can be used at the touch of a button,” she concludes.
Whichever spirit they take on, the non-negotiable is quality and producing a product that stands out. Currently playing with the idea of a rum distilled from a sugar-cane base, and considering whisky for the future, Hope continues to strive for artisanal excellence. “For us, it’s about creating something exceptional; something instilled with integrity and passion; something that will become the perfect accompaniment to people’s special moments,” says Lucy.

oweto-born jewellery designer and manufacturer Nqobile Nkosi has opened a new NQ Jewellery factory at the Rand Refinery Estate in Germiston, representing successful business growth from a humble start in his first 3m X 3m “factory” built of tin in Soweto in 2007. In 2009, NQ Jewellery won a community award that enabled Nkosi to build a four-room facility in Soweto, which was the company’s home until the move to Rand Refinery. NQ Jewellery’s new 200m2 premises employs eight people, as well as interns from universities and FET colleges. The company designs and produces custom-made, high-end jewellery that retails at various outlets around the country, including Bryanston Organic Market, Tourvest retail outlets at airports, and at Shishangeni Lodge on Kruger National Park’s border.

even years old already, LBV is a fabulous fusion concept of fine dining in a smart but relaxed atmosphere. Small and intimate, its menu is a celebration of South Africa’s finest seasonal produce, brought to life by contemporary cooking methods and classic flavours. While we’ve been advised that LBV is currently undergoing some changes to menu and offering, for years the bistro offered a really interesting permanent feature called LINK Room – a tasting menu space housed in the larger restaurant. This venue has been available for private functions as well as for diners that have chosen any of the various tasting menu combinations – many of which were paired with wine. On this note, the wine cellar is another attraction – a carefully
curated ensemble of a wide variety of South Africa’s boutique and famous farms. Ensure you ring ahead to find out more about the tasting menu options and their availability. If it’s the à la carte offering you’re interested in, however, you won’t be disappointed. Meet up with an old friend on a weeknight to share a great shiraz and a collection of the snacks, which include crispy duck with condensed chili mayo and orange gel and squid heads with wasabi mayo. If you’re going the traditional route and would like a hearty three-course meal, you have a concise menu that’s neither intimidating nor basic. We recommend either the roasted cauliflower soup with onion crumble and truffle to start or the calamari with garlic aioli. Follow this with sumptuous lamb gnocchi, packed with roasted veg,
gremolata and fried basil. For those who want a lighter main, there’s the “meal on the run” list which offers “posh” fish and chips or a haloumi, bacon and avo salad among other options. Steak lovers are treated to a fillet with mushroom panna cotta or rump with chimichurri sauce and triple-cooked fries. No classic dining experience is complete without the option of a poached pear in red wine – this one is served with meringue, rosemary fudge and parmesan – but non-traditionalists can also indulge in a chocolate lava pudding with salted caramel ice cream. It’s strange to think that LBV has maintained its relatively low profile for this long, but after visiting you may well concede that it’s simply a matter of the locals keeping this little neighbourhood treasure all to themselves.
According to Nkosi, opportunities opened for his business when he was crowned Tsogo Sun Entrepreneur of the Year in 2016. “Through the Tsogo Sun Entrepreneur platform, we launched our first corporate division, designing, manufacturing and supplying high-quality items such as key rings, cuff links, jacket pins and trophies. This led to our incorporation into the Rand Refinery Supplier Development programme.”
Nkosi also gives credit for his business success to his partner, Jerry Nkeli, the first black paraplegic person to qualify as an attorney and the founder of Jerry Nkeli & Associates law firm, who invested in NQ Jewellery and is chairman of the company. NQ Jewellery maintains a strong local focus, using only local raw material, which include silver, gold, platinum, coloured gemstones and diamonds, and employing local artisans and designers. Nkosi notes that this is significant as up to 80% of jewellery sold in South Africa is imported. “These past few years have been an educational journey that’s enabled me to understand the two different worlds of art and business, and how they can work together. It will always be an important lesson in my life – and one I will continue to learn,” concludes Nkosi.

nitially developed as a mining town, Modderfontein is now a peaceful, green suburb ideal for families and for entrepreneurs to use as a base for their craft beer, farmers’ market produce or gastronomic business. Homes here vary from starter houses and apartments to free-standing houses and plots, some costing upwards of R10m. Recent development and investment has seen a spike in modern construction but many of the buildings in central Modderfontein are historic and retain a charming old-world feel. Another drawcard for this little town is safety. Lifestyle estates and boomed areas are on the rise, providing a strong community atmosphere that’s both welcoming and protected. Schools Don’t let the small-town feel of Modderfontein fool you – there are some great schools here for the kids should you decide to lay down some roots. Infinite Schools Modderfontein Montessori caters to children all the way from 12 months right through high school. Should a specific religious setting be a priority, Heritage Christian College provides a great base. Modderfontein Academy is another option; an internationally recognised British curriculum
ensures your child’s education is on par with a global standard. This institution looks after kids from Grade 0 to high school AS levels. Neighbouring suburbs like Linbro Park and Edenvale also have a selection of good schools and are conveniently close enough for the school drop to be part of the commute. Green spaces The main reason many people choose Modderfontein is for its access to the great outdoors. Runners and cyclists, walkers and dog-owners all love the Modderfontein Reserve, the second biggest private park in Joburg. With 275ha of indigenous flora, wide open spaces, grassy hills and plenty of dams and forests, it’s an escape that fills the lungs and the hearts. The 5km parkrun takes place here, as well as guided walks by conservation experts. You’re also able to braai at stations on the banks of the Fish Eagle Dam. The reserve is home to a wide variety of wildlife including zebra and jackals, fish eagles and long-crested eagles. Aerial forest park activities are available through Go Ape South Africa nearby. These courses are made of platforms and bridges and test skill and agility while building teamwork skills among kids, partners and colleagues. Golfers fear not, as you’re able to join the Modderfontein Golf Club. Tree-lined fairways and a parkland setting make this course truly beautiful – each of the 18 holes has its own unique feature and water is in play throughout the course. The clubhouse offers a venue for functions and caters for weddings and corporate days, which have become popular in this serene setting.

Fixing it Our banks are often marketing fixed-term savings plans, also known as fixed deposits to us, but what exactly are they and are they a good investment compared to, say, a money market fund? WORDS: ALMO LUBOWSKI

hen talking about investments it’s not uncommon that people say and hold opinions such as “I think my money would be safest in a fixed-term savings plan at my bank”, or “Anything other than a fixed deposit would be much too risky”. Naturally these sentiments are understandable considering – among others – the global financial crisis of 2008, which although essentially caused by the banks, saw them also being the only ones to be bailed out. This according to legal and financial expert Almo Lubowski, director, High Water Strategies.
What is a fixed-term savings plan?
Fixed-term savings or deposit accounts offer the ability to have a set rate of interest for a defined period of time. Usually the longer the period, the higher the interest that’s offered will be. This gives the investor the ability to get a marginally higher interest rate compared to what they would get in a normal savings account with a bank. Fixed-term savings or deposit account investments usually carry short-term maturities ranging from one month to a few years and could also have varying levels of required minimum deposits. The more you give, the more you get, basically. When an account holder deposits funds at a bank, the bank can use that money to lend to other consumers or businesses or it can invest the money in other financial products that pay a higher rate of return. In return for the right to use these funds for lending, they will pay the depositor compensation in the form of interest on the account balance. With most deposit accounts of this nature, the owner may withdraw their money at any time.
This makes it difficult for the bank to know ahead of time how much they may lend further at any given point. With a fixed-term deposit saving the bank has more certainty with regard to how long it may hold the funds and therefore pays a higher premium to the account holder for the ability to use these funds to achieve higher rates of return with the collective funds of all fixed-term savings account holders. Fixed-term savings and deposits are safe investments and are therefore appealing to conservative, low-risk investors. They’re underwritten by the banking institution offering them, who, in turn, have guarantees from the country’s Reserve or Central Bank.
What else could be used?
A money market fund is a type of collective investment fund that invests in high-quality, short-term cash instruments, and cash equivalents. A money market fund investment is sponsored by an investment fund
company, and hence carries no guarantee whatsoever. However, though not quite as safe as cash in a fixed-term savings or deposit account (underwritten by the banking institution), money market funds are considered extremely low risk and conservative on the investment spectrum. A money market fund generates stable income, but they have little to no capital appreciation. Although the risk is slightly higher than a fixed-term savings or deposit account at a banking institution and the interest rate is not set, these funds often achieve a similar and sometimes even better interest return than fixed-term savings and deposit accounts. More importantly, they also have no fixed-term and you have the ability to withdraw your money almost immediately. To illustrate let us draw a small comparison between a fixed-term saving or deposit and a money market fund actually available in South Africa:

In the above example it’s clear that although not having a fixed but variable interest rate, the money market fund would give a better interest rate, and the money would not be fixed for 24 months. Therefore, with ever so slightly more risk and no bank guarantee the money market fund may be a better option, especially due to it being more accessible. ontainer homes take simplistic living, creative design and affordable building to the next level. It’s not surprising then that the trend for modular houses is booming, but before launching headlong into your own container build, some preparation is required.
1
Get council approval
Most councils are open to innovative types of building. Do thorough research on property restrictions before you buy the land. Have detailed plans drawn up professionally and develop a good relationship with your council; this will save you time and help you deal with any hiccups along the way.
2 Start right
Buy your container through a reputable company. They will help you choose the right kind of container for your needs, as well as ensure the container is structurally sound, waterproof and has not transported anything dangerous. There are two types of shipping containers: one that has reinforced square tubing side top rails and one that has flat bar side rails. Buying the reinforced side-railed container will ensure that your home is more structurally sound, and you don’t have to pay extra building costs to reinforce the container sides later. Building with a refrigerated container is ideal as they already have insulation but
comes with different challenges. Most purchases require an upfront payment after you’ve seen the container and have the appropriate documentation with a container reference number. A SARS/customs EDI release (SAD500) is important as it gives assurance that the container is legally in South Africa, hasn’t been used for any illegal activities, and isn’t part of any investigation.
3 Design your home
Be clear on the vision for your home. A great way to do this is to look at showhouses. They’ll give you a good physical indication of how effective use of space can transform a container, as well as provide inspiration for your design. Get a professional to draw your design in 3D. It will give you and your builder a better feel for the space.

5 Phase your build
It takes around three and a half months to have the container ready for occupancy and depending on the amount of infrastructure you need. Have clear lines of communication with your building team, do regular site visits and create a realistic, detailed building schedule. Pre-order materials, such as fixtures and pre-cut timber. And keep in mind that you’ll need a secure, organised, watertight space to store all the materials and equipment if you’re building on site.
4 Plan your construction 6 Budget your build
As many container homes are built on vacant land, you need to install infrastructure – such as foundations, running water, power and sewerage – before you start your build. Luckily container homes can be built off-site while you lay the infrastructure. The South African building industry is relatively new to handling modular framed structures and it may be challenging at first to find an experienced container home builder that will quote a fixed price. However, there are experts such as Len Douglas
Your budget should include the cost of the container being transported to site, which will require a crane, labour, materials, equipment hire etc. The average cost of a simple high-end container home is between R825,000 to R1m. As with any build, it’s wise to include a contingency budget of about 13%. The complexity of your design will determine the amount of customisation needed. Most building components, such as roof trusses, are designed to
fit onto brick structures, which means that there will be instances where you must develop your own clever solution to achieve the look you envision. These customisations may be challenging to predict or show on the drawings. This might require your attention when they’re being installed to make sure the
building team, the architect and the engineer are on the same page. To build in a box you have to think outside the box, and container homes provide a wonderful opportunity to be truly creative with your house. They give first-time builders a quicker, more economical way of achieving their dream home.
