Directed by Fred Abrahamse, this production is inspired by one of the earliest recorded performances of Hamlet which took place on a ship off the coast of Africa in 1608. This unique telling will take place at the Pieter Toerien Main Theatre at Montecasino from 3 to 21 May, and features an allstar cast including Michael Richard

pening a spot that’s both a bar and a barbershop seems like a strange concept, but it’s one that the team behind Bar Ber Black Sheep has turned into one of the coolest spots in the city. Located on the increasingly popular Bolton Road strip in Rosebank, Bar Ber Blacksheep is open for haircuts from 7am to 7pm and for drinks from 10am to 10pm or later, making it the perfect place to transition from day to night on any day of the week.

The brainchild of Leon Plutsick and Rory Sandilands, Bar Ber Black Sheep is the first barbershop-cumbar in Joburg. As one of the original founders of the Shongololo Express, Leon’s years of experience in the hospitality and travel industries make him a natural to run the bar, while Rory’s reputation as the head of Blo hairdressing nearby means that the barbershop is in experienced hands. The pair are a perfect combination to run this popular new spot. The response to Bar Ber Black Sheep has been incredible, from both those looking to get a haircut and those looking to have a drink. “It’s such an unusual spot and we’ve loved seeing the response. People mostly come in to the barber’s during the day, but from 3pm onwards we see a lot of people stopping in for drinks – it’s perfectly located for a drink on your way home from work,” says Leon. If you’re looking to get a haircut, there are three hairdressers on site, and while Bar Ber Black Sheep does take walk-ins, the barbershop books up quickly, so you’re better off planning your trip in advance and calling ahead to make an appointment. But if you’re looking to have a drink, the bar fills up on a first come first served basis, so you can rally your friends and meet up for some gin and juice any time. With special art installations taking place during First Thursdays, these evenings make for the perfect opportunity to get acquainted with the space, but with its Prohibition era decor and funky design, there really isn’t a bad time to be seen at Bar Ber Black Sheep.

he Zulu word meaning “come in”, zwakala, is the perfect way to describe The Immigrant – a relaxed restaurant-bar located in the vibrant Grove Square on the corner of Braamfontein’s De Korte and Melle streets. Co-owned by Matt Beckett of The Artisan in Greenside, The Immigrant celebrates Braamfontein’s unique cultural mix and the spirit of Jozi as a true immigrant city. The business is also closely linked with Once, the adjoining “poshtel” that sits somewhere between a “posh” hostel and an upmarket hotel. As a result, international travellers passing through Jozi make up a good portion of the clientele at The Immigrant, though it’s also quickly become a firm favourite among city workers from surrounding areas for lunch and as a vibrant student hangout in the evenings. In Grove Square you can also find the hip 86 Public pizzeria; Velo cafe and gallery; and Galata, the authentic Turkish bakery that’s as good as it is affordable. The Immigrant is all about sharing, a concept that’s reflected in its layout of casual seating that encourages interaction rather than formal restaurant dining. A large circular bar is the focal point of the space and sits halfway between the inside

area and outside tables. The menu is simple but well thought out. For breakfast you can go for muesli, yoghurt and fruit, or build your own bagel. For lunch and dinner, there are wraps, salads and nachos, along with a selection of “boards” perfect for sharing. Choose from premium thick-cut rump, slow-roasted barbecue pulled chicken or mixed vegetable falafels served on a long wooden board with sweet potato, aubergine or standard fries and roast pepper pesto, chimmichurri or chakalaka dips. Drinks are artisan-focused, so you’ll find a host of deliciously original cocktails and local craft beer favourites including Mad Giant and CBC – order a bucket of six beers as the perfect sharing option if you’re in a group. Local DJs and live music most evenings and on weekend afternoons complete the buzz and make for a really festive feel once the sun goes down. Of all the Joburg suburbs, Braamfontein is one of the few that’s a real cultural mix, accommodating patrons of different cultures, nationalities, tastes and ages. The Immigrant embodies this perfectly, making it the perfect spot to chill by day or unwind in the evenings while soaking up one of the city’s most unique neighbourhoods.

Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: As the consulting rooms were already established, I came to them.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: Nutritional Solutions already had a space in Grayston and wanted to open up another branch in Bryanston, so they found our rooms in 2015, but that was before I joined them.

Q: How did your business start? A: After completing my community service year in 2010, I began working in the private sector in 2011. I also volunteer as a member of the Association for Dietetics in South Africa, and through them I

Q: What’s your most popular item? A: I spend more time on corporate work than seeing patients, but that in itself is wide-ranging, varying from nutrition workshops, to wellness days, weight-loss challenges and canteen meal development.

Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: In our practice, we’re all sole proprietors with our own patient bases, working under the Nutritional Solutions banner, so we pay for our space, which includes the shared services like the reception.

here’s been a not-so-subtle dip in morning and evening temperatures lately – a sure sign that winter is here and we’d better be prepared. Here are our top tips to help you get ready for winter.

Outside

Clean your gutters Now is the perfect time to clean your gutters – before the heavy winter rains arrive. You don’t want to end up with rainwater in your home because your gutters were so clogged that the water had nowhere else to go. Inspect your roof Check your roof for any leaks or damage, and fix them before the rains arrive. Also inspect all windows and doors to ensure they’re properly sealed.

Layers There’s nothing better than snuggling up on the couch when it’s cold outside. Get your couch winter-ready with a few throws. It’s an inexpensive way to make your lounge cosier while adding different textures to the decor. This also works well in the bedroom. Invest in rugs If you have floor tiles throughout your house, add a few rugs in key areas. Look for textured rugs that’ll protect your feet from the cold. Before you buy your rugs, though,

make sure the colour and patterns complement the style of your room. The fireplace A fireplace is a great way to keep your house warm, and an increasing number of people are seeing the benefits of having one in the home. If you already have a fireplace, be sure to stock up on wood and get it cleaned and inspected.

Slight uptick in percentage of foreign property buyers

T

he FNB Estate Agent Survey for Q1 2017 pointed to a slightly higher estimate of foreigners buying homes in SA, compared to the previous quarter. From 4,45% of total home buying in Q4 2016, the estimated percentage of home buyers believed to be foreigners in the Q1 2017 Estate Agent Survey rose slightly to 4,89% of total home buyers. It was also marginally higher than the 4,67% estimate in Q1 2016. Using a four-quarter moving average for smoothing purposes, the estimated percentage of foreign home buyers for the four quarters up to Q1 2017 was 5,23%, a slight increase from 5,18% for the four quarters up to the end

of 2016, but up from 4,75% for the four quarters up to Q1 2016. The aggregated response to the survey showed a mild bias towards more foreigner home buying, even though a rand strengthening through 2016 to early-2017 has made South African homes more expensive to foreigners in their own currency terms. In rand terms, average house price inflation by February 2017 was 0,8% year on year. However, in foreign currency terms, the FNB House Price Index increased by 24,3% year on year in euro terms, by 19,3% in dollar terms and by 36,5% in pound terms (the Brexit impact) year on year in February. This means property in SA has become notably more costly for many foreign buyers.

Rosebank has become a very vibrant, multicultural node that is especially popular with young professionals working in the area as well as executives who commute to Johannesburg for work purposes from other parts of the country. The suburb caters to most budgets and needs as it offers buyers a very broad choice of apartments, from starter studios or older one-bedroom flats at around R1m to super luxury penthouses for up to R18m, although most sales are between R1,5m and R3m. Hyde Park is one of Sandton’s most desirable addresses

O

f all of Johannesburg’s suburbs, Hyde Park and Sandhurst, both of which are situated on the doorstep of Sandton, have the strongest claims to being the most desirable addresses within the Gauteng region. According to Rupert Finnemore, regional MD, Pam Golding Properties Gauteng, these two suburbs are highly prestigious and have long been regarded as the home of Johannesburg’s elite. “Many of the city’s people aspire to live in Hyde Park and Sandhurst, and the immense status of owning a property in the area, as well as its geographically desirable location, have ensured the ongoing popularity of homes there,” says Finnemore. “Although situated just minutes from high-density Sandton, many of the properties have remained of substantial size with large, well-established gardens.”

However, some of the properties within the area have been subdivided and developed into sectional title complexes or estates. Finnemore notes that more than half the properties in the two suburbs, both of which are more than 50 years old, are now sectional title developments. “This diversity in property types ensures that there is a wide range of different property options available for those interested in acquiring property in either Hyde Park or Sandhurst. Sectional title properties represent a more affordable option for many people and these types of homes are consequently in strong demand,” says Finnemore. “Considering the rapid and ongoing development of Sandton, and the ongoing desirability of suburbs such as Hyde Park and Sandhurst, we expect properties in the area to hold their values well.”
