Each year, Forbes Travel Guide inspectors visit every property that is rated, fully incognito and under the auspices of a typical guest. The auditor pays their own way, all the while evaluating the location based on up to 900 objective standards with an emphasis on exceptional service. At no time is the hotel or staff aware of a secret audit being conducted. The aim is to evaluate an average guest experience and the level of hospitality provided. The Forbes Travel Guide 2020 marks the first edition that a South African destination has been featured as a Forbes five star venue.

I

f there’s something Babette Kourelos knows, it’s baking. And more specifically, baking bread. It’s a hobby that took this young LLB student to Vermont in the US to apprentice under a French master baker. Q: How did you start? A: My love of food preparation and baking definitely comes from my mother and grandmother. I baked from a young age and always looked for new recipes for cakes, biscuits, desserts, etc. One day my stepfather asked me to bake something different, something real – not the usual sweet bakes I tended to gravitate towards. Accepting the challenge, I paged through all my recipe books and eventually came across a recipe for an old-school English cottage loaf. That’s it, I thought… What’s more real than bread? So, I got stuck into the recipe and was pleasantly surprised by the

simplicity and beauty of bread baking. Every stage of the process is unique and interesting to observe. It never fails to amaze me how such simple ingredients can be combined to make a nourishing and wholesome loaf of bread. Bread really is the staff of life! Q: Tell us about your bread-baking classes. A: I teach home bakers how to bake beautifully nutritious and wholesome loaves for themselves and their families. Participants may choose to spend a full day of baking with me or simply a short three hours. I cover bread theory, baking and shaping techniques, and provide ideas on how to change or add ingredients to a basic dough recipe so as to have a variety of breads coming out of your oven. Whether you are a beginner, intermediate or advanced baker, there’s something for everyone to learn about bread.

Q: What is your favourite bread to bake? A: I would have to say sourdough. Not only are sourdough loaves delicious and full of character, but the actual process of cultivating the sourdough culture or “mother dough”, requires skill, patience and love. The baker’s unique understanding of the dough and its needs are fundamental to the creation of a beautifully robust and flavourful loaf. Without this understanding and skill, the bread will most likely resemble a brick and may be too acidic in flavour. Q: Some tips for mistakefree baking? A: Always weigh your ingredients. This is the best and most accurate way to approach any baking project. Make sure you have all your utensils and ingredients placed on the counter before you start – this way you will not accidentally skip an important ingredient or scramble around the kitchen looking for things.

Northern suburb dwellers rejoice! Che Argentine Grill has opened in Parkwood after the huge success of its sister shop in Maboneng. WORDS: EMILY SHAW

P

erched on Jan Smuts, Che presents quite a stark first impression: plain dark wood tables and chairs and not much in the way of the curated decor so trendy right now. That said, when all candles are aglow and the muted rugs and exposed brick come together, you’re met with rather a dramatic finish, which creates a great foundation for the star of the show – the open flame grill. If the weather is playing ball, make sure you book a table outside. Outside, you ask? In Parkwood? True as bob, at the back of the building there’s a tiny elevated, stepped garden complete with a bar – as many as six tables can be accommodated. Here you can sit beneath fairy-lights which are strung through a large central tree and enjoy the sunset and the company of a visiting Siamese cat. Founded by an Argentine and a Uruguayan, Che is true to its gastronomic roots – serving the most succulent meat cuts – all grass-fed and ethically raised – cooked on an open flame. Veggies fear not, for you have been catered for with delicacies like mushroom croquets and spinach empanadas as well as a full, wellconsidered list of sides – like red cabbage, cashew nuts and Chinese sprouts or roasted sweet potato in honey – with which to create your own tapas board. Chances are though, if you’re at a grill you’ll be transfixed by the page of vaca (beef ). We recommend the lomo con hueso (fillet on the bone) medium rare with a side of baby spinach, cherry tomatoes, brandy-soaked pears and crispy bacon bites. Another fabulous addition is the homemade chimichurri sauce which you can take home with you for your own steaks at just R65 a bottle. You’ll be charmed by the service which is elegant and informed and if you’re lucky you might meet one of the owners who often stop for a little chat as they do their rounds. All in all, Che is a fabulous choice for a celebration, a great spot for a date, and with its hearty food and great red wine selection, is sure to be a firm favourite once the cold of autumn sets in.

or Masego Madzwamuse, her label, Bola Nangabe, is more than a creative outlet. It’s also a grounding mechanism that’s very much needed, given her challenges as a full-time social justice and environmental activist. Not that it’s a complete escape from reality, mind you. The principles that inform Bola Nangabe’s designs – such as the use of sustainable fabrics and practices and empowering local communities – speak to Masego’s own life journey, so that it’s inextricably bound to her outlook and philosophies. She started the label in 2018, after she realised that the clothes she sold to her small customer base were prized not only for their unique aesthetic but also because they were a reflection of the countries Masego visits as part of her job as CEO of the Southern Africa Trust. “I travel extensively throughout Africa, and my first questions are always: where do the locals eat and shop, and where do they buy fabric?” She loves spending time with the local artisans – and the accounts of these encounters intrigue her customers. “People love the thought that their cape has been made from an upcycled piece of kente cloth that’s more than 100 years old; fabric which has played a role in generations of people’s lives, and now adds a pop of colour to your grey winter.” Indeed, colour is a crucial element of all Bola Nangabe pieces. Masego explains that her inspiration derives from the thousands of yellow daisies which dot the desert landscape after the first rains, transforming it entirely. In fact, the desert is her muse in many more

ways, too – literally translated, the label’s name means “Speak, Nangabe”. “Nangabe is the name given to me by my maternal grandfather, who had a significant influence on my life. My mother’s family hail from the Kgalagadi region in Botswana, and although people from this region have traditionally been regarded as low down on the social scale, they’re the custodians of the country’s incredible heritage. This line was intended to give voice to that heritage, and how it connects us, as a people, to the African continent.” Bola Nangabe has amassed a following from its appearance at pop-up markets throughout Joburg, and Masego now holds open days at her new studio in her Norwood home. She also intends targeting an international audience through her recently established online offering.

outh Africa has some of the most varied and scenic golf estates in the world with world-class golf courses designed by some of the biggest names in international golf. The consistent demand for secure gated estates and the luxury lifestyle afforded by them continues to be good news for golf estates but, as a recent New York Times article pointed out, long-term investors are looking at more than just the golf facilities when they buy into an estate, important as those are.

The best investments are those that have a wider appeal and a wider pool of buyers when it comes to selling again, like estates that have lifestyle aspects attractive to non-golfers either within the estate itself or in the adjacent community. Winelands rated by Lonely Planet travellers T he Cape Winelands was listed by the Lonely Planet travel guide as one of the Top 10 Best Value Destinations for tourists in its Best in Travel 2020 rankings.

According to Berry Everitt, CEO of the Chas Everitt International property group, the company receives increasing international enquiries for Winelands homes as

the local affiliate of the global Luxury Portfolio International network. “The main towns are Stellenbosch, Franschhoek, Paarl, Tulbagh and Wellington. The Winelands is also home to many of the country’s top residential estates, which makes it a popular choice for affluent local buyers,” he says.

Land and homes on these estates are priced from R2m up to R35m, and the options include working wine or olive farms and golf and lifestyle estates. Anneke Buys and Amanda Colombo of the Chas Everitt International Luxury Portfolio division, sold luxury homes worth more than R220m in the area last year. They say Val de Vie, Boschenmeer and Pearl Valley Golf Estate & Spa are particularly attractive to affluent buyers because of the secure, open-door lifestyle and easy access to schools. A home on Pearl Valley Golf Estate, listed at R25m, was recently sold by Chas Everitt International.

Waterfall splashing out with multibillion project J SE-listed Balwin Properties announced the development of Munyaka, a R9bn development in Waterfall, Midrand.

Founder and CEO Steve Brookes comments, “Munyaka, which translates to ‘crystal’ in Venda, is set to be the crown jewel in our development portfolio. We’ve worked closely with our architects to bring something exceptional to South African sectional title buyers and believe that it will not only set a new standard for lifestyle estate living in Waterfall, but indeed in the country.” Construction has already commenced, with the balance of apartments being rolled out over the next eight years. Balwin is further investing significantly in road infrastructure around Munyaka, having already completed Mia Drive at a cost in excess of R100m.

Balwin recently concluded an exclusivity agreement with Crystal Lagoons for South Africa, which will see the company develop freshwater lagoons in six strategic nodes in Joburg, Pretoria, the Dolphin Coast, the Western Cape and Mbombela. Crystal Lagoons is a multi-national company with offices worldwide and has developed an innovative concept and technology, patented in 190 countries, allowing for the construction and maintenance of unlimited size bodies of water, in crystal-clear conditions, at low cost.

The freshwater Crystal Lagoon at Munyaka will be the largest in the southern hemisphere, covering an area of approximately seven rugby fields. The lagoon will feature a landmark 50m high tower with amenities including a 50-seater restaurant and conference

facility with a commanding view of the Joburg skyline as well as ziplining from the tower into the lagoon and a heated pool, fed by the lagoon. A wide range of nonmotorised water sports activities will be available through the lifestyle centre. All residents at Munyaka will have access to the lagoon as well as a six-star green-rated VIP lifestyle centre with an on-site gym (free access), a spa, cinema room, meeting rooms, restaurants, laundromats and concierge facilities. Access to these facilities will be biometrically controlled to add to the safety and security of residents.

Free wi-fi will be made available at the lifestyle centre as well as around the beachfront area, where pergolas will offer cellphone-charging facilities.

Jewel City and Towers Main on track for Joburg

T

he transformation of Joburg’s inner city will continue this year thanks to a substantial investment in two Divercity Urban Property Fund developments, Jewel City precinct and Towers Main. Residents started moving into the new live-work-play neighbourhoods that will change the face of the CBD.

Towers Main and Jewel City are two keystone projects, with Towers Main designed to connect with Jewel City, which in turn connects to vibey Maboneng. A walkway featuring street furniture, lighting and art will run the length of 10 city blocks through all three precincts.

“Market response from retailers and residents has been positive beyond our expectations, reaffirming that Towers Main and Jewel City are ideal for what people want from inner-city living,” says Atterbury Property development manager Derrick Pautz. “There’s no doubt these are going to be the best places to work and live in Joburg central.”

One of the city’s 10 tallest structures, the 30-storey Towers Main building, is being renewed by Divercity. The mixeduse development will help service demand for urban accommodation with 520 affordable rental apartments, whereas Absa leased nine floors with 10,000m2 of office space. The first tenants moved in in December on the first levels completed.

Divercity is a new property investment fund driven to re-energise SA’s urban centres by creating inner-city precincts. Its principal shareholders are Atterbury Property, Ithemba Property and Talis Property Fund. Divercity will create multifunctional, inclusive neighbourhoods with integrated commercial buildings and affordable residential accommodation.

Six city blocks are being revitalised as part of the adjacent Jewel City. This mixed-use precinct includes 1,200 residential apartments in its first phase and will offer ample amenities such as the development’s first 14,000m2 of commercial space that includes a Curro school and Fives Futbol five-a-side fields. The first residents took occupancy last month.

First Portugal Golden Visa citizenship T

he first Portugal Golden Visa citizenship was recently issued, with more to follow in coming months, says Pam Golding International head Chris Immelman. It’s good news for South Africans invested in the Portugal Golden Visa programme, which offers residency via investment in property. “This is very positive for investors whose visas are already being processed but also provides considerable comfort for those still considering the programme in order to acquire residency and citizenship,” he says. Residency enables applicants to live, work and study in Portugal, with Schengen travel rights, whereas citizenship allows applicants and their immediate family to live, work and

study in any EU country. More than 300 South African families are involved in the programme, says Immelman. “While the original requirement was a €500,000 (±R8,2m) investment, it’s now possible to enter the Golden Visa programme with an entrylevel investment of only €350,000 (±R5,7m). We recently launched the opportunity to invest in Santa Catarina Place, our first apartment development in Portugal.” Santa Catarina Place is in downtown Porto and will be fully refurbished. “These are apartments that can be used as you like, with a 4% rental guarantee for three years should you prefer to rent yours out,” says Immelman. “Investors have full ownership, and unites are priced from €374,000 (±R6,1m), including a promotional discount.”
