eo Mkhwanazi travels with his copy of Larousse Gastronomique, widely considered the chef’s Bible, in his boot. The book was a gift from his brother Tshepo and was the missing ingredient that transformed a love of cooking into a career as a serious chef. “I grew up in a cooking family,” Neo explains. “My mother worked for the Protea group before starting her own catering company, so food was always a central part of who we were.” The Mkhwanazi kitchen bubbled away with traditional favourites, but there was also a great deal of experimentation. “I still get excited when I think of mac-and-cheese, because it reminds me of my mom – she made the best!” It was when Tshepo left the family fold to become an executive chef that a new world of food opened to Neo. Together, the brothers explored classic

I was invited to attend the Global Running Day event at the Westin in Cape Town on 5 June. Marriot Westin hotels around the world are focussed on wellness, helping their guests stay active and healthy while away from home. For this event, the Westin in the Mother City hosted a get-together for a select few where they could showcase three of their wellness pillars: Sleep Well, Eat Well and Live Well. The first two are pretty self-explanatory (and boy, did I sleep and eat well), with the third component a 5km run or walk around the foreshore and the Silo District, with the purpose of spreading the message of healthy living while exploring some of the public art installations displayed on the hotel’s doorstep. Now, there are few things that can get me out of bed at 6am on a freezing winter’s morning – except, of course, the urgent screams of a 10-month-old – but this morning I was up and at’em at the first sound of my alarm clock. There are three reasons for this. That’s what his own food is about. Although he developed a reputation for flavour during his time under Clico’s previous head chef, Marnus Scholly, he maintains that Mother Nature is the artist and he, as the chef, is merely the architect. “I let the product shine.” His philosophy is present in his home kitchen, too. There’s no case of “cobbler’s children” here. Neo believes that chef’s families should eat as well as their customers, so his wife sips on freshly brewed coffee every morning while the children munch home-baked bread and veggies grown in his own garden. After building his skills at the restaurants of a number of five-star hotels and lodges across the country, Neo is delighted to be “steering my own ship”. “It’s been a long time coming, but I’m the kind of person who is constantly reviewing where I am and seeing how I can better it. I may have been offered the position earlier, but the timing wasn’t right before – and now it is. Now, I’m focussing on being great. My motto is “consistently consistent”, trying to be better than I was the year before.”

So much of what goes into food today is just not good for us, so it’s wonderful to see a return to the basics and a renewed focus on wholesomeness.”

a king-sized bed, rain pelting on the window that overlooks the city and Waterfront in the distance, I was well rested – my first night of uninterrupted sleep in a while. Two, the previous night’s dinner of butternut and quinoa salad with blueberry vinaigrette; 12hour slow roasted lamb neck confit with roast carrot puree and gremolata; and sour fig and apple cobbler with thyme and olive oil gelato, gave me more than enough energy for the walk ahead. (Any concerns that the portions from the Get Ready To Rise menu would be small were completely unfounded.) And three, I have recently started on a bit of a health mission and this was just the right thing to kickstart my journey. Walking through the city at that time of the morning with a group of likeminded people was really electrifying and inspiring. It was so amazing to see the city from a different angle. An hour and a half, a shower and breakfast later, I was ready to face the day. And I’m going to make good on the promise I made to myself while walking: next year, I’m running the 5km.

S

hiraz is one of South Africa’s most popular red grapes – it’s the second-most widely planted red wine cultivar in the country after cabernet sauvignon, and last year South African vintners shipped more than 21 million litres of shiraz abroad, making it the leading red wine cultivar exported. But consumers are often confused by the difference between shiraz and syrah. The fact of the matter is, they’re both from the same grapes, it’s simply the style of wine and winemaking that changes. “The difference between syrah and shiraz is more blurred today than ever before and it can be highly confusing,” says Roland Peens, managing director, winecellar.co.za. The “New World” character of shiraz was made famous in Australia’s Barossa valley, with jammy fruit flavours and high alcohol. Traditionalists started a movement towards popularising a more “Old World” style of syrah, common to the Northern-Rhône region of France, “reflecting the more elegant, peppery and floral wines that shiraz can produce”, adds Peens. “Syrah is generally earlier-picked, therefore lower in alcohol, offering more savoury notes and dry tannins.” Whether you prefer richer shiraz or austere syrah comes down simply to personal taste. Gabriëlskloof Landscape Series Syrah on Sandstone

The Landscape Series from this Overberg cellar showcases the unique terroir of the farm, and this syrah derives much of its character from the Table Mountain sandstone soils in which it grows. Expect signature white pepper and red fruit on the nose, atop a silky and elegant palate. For something less expensive, their Gabrielskloof Syrah is also worth discovering.

Reyneke Syrah

Johan Reyneke flies the flag high for organic and biodynamic winemaking, and this delicious syrah from Stellenbosch is well worth discovering. Plenty of perfume on the nose, with a fresh palate of cranberries, cherries and no shortage of juicy tannins.

From vineyards high on the slopes of the Helderberg, this remarkable syrah is greater than the sum of its parts. In the current economic climate your wallet is probably under strain, but if you love simple fresh food, beautifully prepared and locally sourced, then head to Coobs in Parkhurst. Founder and chef James Diack’s Provenance menu lets you choose a starter, main and dessert, all for R250. Winter sees a wave of new restaurants on Melrose Arch’s high street. Roast Café and The Comedy Club have closed and owner Tony Raciti has teamed up with brothers José and Tony da Costa to open Rodizio Brazilian Restaurant in early July. Diners can feast on slowroasted prime beef, tender chicken, traditional chouriço, succulent pork or leg of lamb, with carvers serving the meat off large skewers directly on to your plate – in true Brazilian style – until you indicate you’ve had enough. For deliciously fresh fast food, visit Ono Poké Eatery, which used to be situated in Illovo, but is now offering its Hawaiian-style poké bowls on the high street. “Ono means ‘delicious’ in Hawaiian and that’s exactly what we’re bringing to Melrose Arch – delicious, healthy options with international flair,” says owner Anthony Theodosiou.

T

here’s no doubt that the resurgence of wallpaper in decor continues unabated. The ranges just get wider, more exotic, and more experimental – you can basically create any mood you like. Clinton Kearney, general sales manager, Wallpaper Inn, says, “Wallpaper in South Africa suffered a bad reputation during the 80s, with a shift to paint effects, textured wall finishes, and plaster effects. About five years ago, we saw a resurgence of interest in wallpaper.” He feels exposure to overseas decor programmes from the UK and US helped in part to inspire homeowners to choose wallpaper as a big impact accessory. “This, coupled with the improvement in good design and advances in print technology, has moved wallpaper on.”

The biggest trend

Dean Bassett, director, WCI Wallpapers JHB Pty Ltd, confirms a global resurgence in interest in wallpaper. “Especially digital printed wallpaper, where you can create any custom wallpaper or mural to suit your specific preference. The overall shift in the local and international market is more focussed on developing bespoke wall coverings, given the wealth of options available to the client.” Dean’s own inhouse printing provides clients with custom-printed wallpaper and vinyl options. Whether you find a high-resolution image on one of the stock photography sites or use one of your own photographs, it’s astonishing what effect this can have in a room. Cleverly planned, your photograph of a forest disappearing into the distance will enlarge your bedroom into infinity.

Local and global trends

In Clinton’s view, “Wallpaper choices in South Africa can be regional in taste, but also draw inspiration from international trends. The predictions for the coming season are botanical prints which were popular last season,

but have kept on trend with new seasonal colour pallets. Geometric patterns and stylised geometric patterns are trending with a strong Scandinavian look also coming through.” Dean says, apart from big bold botanicals, high on the list are faux designs. “Concrete, wood, and metal imitation wallpapers. Our Rasch supplier offers loads of luscious organic wallpapers, but equally, textured concrete wall coverings to create an urban look and feel to any environment.” Clinton’s current top sellers are bricks and botanicals.

Wallpaper or paint?

Dean feels, “You can use wallpaper to transform any environment, no matter where. The richness of the colours and depth of textures cannot be achieved with simple paint, making wallpaper an everlasting necessity in interior design.” For many designers, it’s the combination of the two that works. It’s often only necessary to wallpaper a single wall, particularly if it replaces a headboard, or is intended to bring the outside in – or vice versa – in a bathroom for instance. Carefully pairing paint colours and textures with wallpaper can enhance both materials.

Where are people using wallpapers?

“Wallpapers are typically used for feature walls in bedrooms and living rooms, but we’re seeing an increase in people wanting them in bathrooms and kitchens – no problem, as long as the correct wallpaper is chosen, and the application is done correctly,” says Clinton. “People love to actually feel their wallpaper, so paper with a texture is often a deciding factor,” he adds. “We’re also encouraging the use of non-woven backing paper, which is easier to hang especially if you want to DIY it.”

Sales boom at Sitari Ramaphoria to in the Western Cape boost residential W

ith sales of R1,3bn since it has launched in August 2014, award-winning Sitari Country Estate in Somerset West is now one of the fastest-selling largescale estates in the Western Cape. Although many developers were impacted by slower buyer uptake in 2018, Sitari’s sales bucked that trend.

“This was our second-best year in terms of sales by rand value since inception,” says Claudius Combrinck, executive director, Uvest Property Sales, the onsite real estate agency. “Sales at the estate averaged at just less than 14 properties a month from 1 January to 31 December last year, across plots, homes

and apartments.” He says 2019’s sales have been consistent too. Even though it’s an election year, the company recorded nearly R27m in sales during April. Combrinck attributes the estate’s success to having market-aligned product offerings, with homes priced from less than R3m and apartments ranging from R1,5m to R2,5m.

esidential property sales are on the up if market movements in May are any indication, according to BetterBond CEO Rudi Botha. Sentiment often plays a bigger role than interest rate fluctuations and Botha believes “Ramaphoria” has returned to local real estate. “This is evident from the huge increase (22%) in the number of offers to purchase and home loan applications made in the first two weeks of May, compared to the first two weeks of May last year,” he says. An upturn is likely since the successful conclusion of the elections, Botha says, as there’s confidence that President

Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver on promises to attract large-scale foreign investment, revive a sagging economy, and facilitate jobs and small business creation. “Many prospective buyers and investors were waiting to see whether the elections would go ahead peacefully and whether Ramaphosa would remain president.” Botha says local banks appear to share the view that the property market is set for a strong upturn and concomitant increase in home values, as they’re competing fiercely for new home loan business. “In recent months there’s also been an increase in 100% home loans being granted to borrowers with good credit histories, low debt loads, and reliable employment,” he adds.

Africa’s southernmost Protea Hotel by Marriott C

ape Town boutique developer Devco Group recently signed an agreement with Marriott International to open a Protea Hotels by Marriott property as part of its mixed-use The Admiral Beach Hotel & Apartments development in Struisbaai. Located on the southernmost tip of Africa, the Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Agulhas will open in 2023. The Admiral Beach project will consist of the hotel 85 apartments, the first of which are now on sale (pictured above); and a business/commercial phase.

Protea Hotel by Marriott Cape Agulhas will comprise 160 rooms, a speciality restaurant, indoor and outdoor bars, a sheltered deck and a swimming pool, plus fitness facilities. It will be situated on the beachfront of the 14km stretch of coastline. “We’re proud to be partnering with this international brand,” says Devco group director Deon Winterbach. “We look forward to welcoming travellers to the southernmost hotel in Africa.” Construction commences in 2020.

eaceful” is the word Bradley Davies uses to describe his neighbourhood, as well as “quiet and neat”. Bradley spent some of his school career in the area and cites his parents’ reasons for settling here as being both the great school options and the public amenities.

Property A firm favourite of families, Florida offers mainly large standalone houses with gardens in 70s/80s architectural style. Many parents whose children have flown the nest opt to stay put too, adding to the established feeling of the area. As modern development continues, however, there are more options for young singles and professional couples. Explore Night or day, there’s plenty to do in Florida in your downtime. Weekends with kids can be spent at beautiful Florida Lake. Buy a bird book and spend the morning spotting all kinds of species in the water and bird sanctuary, followed by a home-made picnic on the grass. If tiring the tykes out is your plan,

there’s a putt-putt course as well as an adventure park to keep them busy. When days are rainy and if you have a little cabin fever, you can visit the Roodepoort Museum. Here you can while away the hours among Irma Stern paintings, books and Bibles from 1699 and porcelain artefacts from all over the world.
