Y
ou may have heard of Kobe beef, but have you heard of Wagyu? The word “wagyu” means “Japanese cattle” and it’s a completely different kind of meat: a delicious, highly marbled and tender beef that’s available in South Africa. We chat with Samuel Pauw, project manager, Certified Wagyu Breeders Auction, to find out more. Q: How was the recent Certified Wagyu Breeders Auction in Pretoria you participated in? A: The auction went exceptionally well. The total sales value was R11,57m for 100 animals and the most expensive animal on sale went for R670,000 (a full blood Wagyu female). Most of the sellers were offering animals that had resulted from an imported fertilised embryo and the high prices were driven by breeder demand to enter the Wagyu market here. The high price of full-blood Wagyu beef will make it a realistic purchase only for the very wealthy. However, the result of crossing Wagyu with Angus breeds gives a very good marbled result at a more accessible price. Once the supply to retailers and restaurants is consistent, it’s predicted that the demand for Wagyu beef will be very high.

Both of these methods are an ideal way to retain the healthy fats which make Wagyu beef so special. Westerners love steaks and burgers and both of these are best grilled and not overcooked. Wagyu can also be made into biltong. Q: What are the health benefits? A: Wagyu beef has been likened to olive oil and salmon in terms of its health benefits. It has up to 300% more monounsaturated fat than normal beef due to the high marbling of the meat, as well as incredibly high omega 3 and 6 content. Wagyu beef has the lowest cholesterol levels of all meats, even lower than fish or chicken, and it contains oleic acid which is considered good for your heart. It’s also believed to have anticarcinogenic properties.

outh Africa isn’t traditionally a gin-producing nation. We didn’t even have local gins until very recently. But things have changed and there are now 103 gins being produced by more than 50 local distillers. Enter The Gin Box: a new subscription-based craft gin club that delivers the best locally produced items to your door each month. We chat with founder Jean Buckham to find out more. Q: What led you to start The Gin Box? A: I’ve always had a love for gin and I watched with interest as many local distillers like Inverroche opened their doors and started experimenting with Cape fynbos, rooibos and bushveld botanicals. My real inspiration came from

watching an episode of the UK’s Dragons’ Den, which showed all five “dragons” clawing at each other for a share of a UK craft gin club. Q: What is the club’s main aim? A: Many South Africans are scared of trying a new gin and prefer to stick to what they know. The Gin Box will show gin enthusiasts what to buy, how to drink it and how to do it with style. Q: How do you decide what gins to include? A: We include gins that are well made with unusual and exciting botanicals, that allow us to take our members on a taste journey. Once we’ve decided on the gin of the month, we then find a tonic which enhances the flavour
and we include suitable garnishes to ensure the perfect serve. Q: Tell us about a few of the producers you feature. A: We featured lesser-known Pienaar and Son Orient – Andre Pienaar and his father own a small Cape Town distillery that produces two unbelievable gins, Orient and Empire, in beautiful bottles. Nic and Andri Janeka from New Harbour Distillery produce a gin made from spekboom and another one made from rooibos botanicals. And then Six Dogs Distillery, based in Worcester, recently launched Six Dogs Blue which is blue but turns pink once combined with the quinine from the tonic water. It’s a real magic show.

very year it seems to get a little more difficult to come up with something to do for New Year’s Eve. People are usually tired by this time of the year, yet still feel slightly pressured to do something festive, and perhaps a little over the top. However, when news broke that the Afropunk Festival was coming to town – and for New Year’s Eve – that was it, problem solved.

It’s been a dream of ours for many years to share what we’ve learnt and to learn so we can share.” Constitution Hill was chosen as the venue for the festival as the two organisations share the same values: inclusion and equality for people of all races, genders and beliefs. Formerly a prison, the precinct is now the home of the Constitutional Court.
The first Afropunk Festival took place in Brooklyn in 2005 and has earned the reputation of being one of the best music and arts festivals in the world. But Afropunk’s philosophy goes deeper than simply being a music festival. It was co-founded by Mathew Morgan and James Spooner and was inspired by James’s 2003 documentary film AfroPunk. The film explores the subculture and lives of black punks in the US. And while the festival initially sought to build a community and encourage the black punk subculture, its roots lie in celebrating black culture with an openness to multiculturalism.
The Afropunk line-up has always been stellar, with stars such as Lauryn Hill, Erykah Badu and Grace Jones performing over the years. Well-known artists Anderson .Paak and The Free Nationals, and Solange Knowles, both of whom defy genre, will be performing on the 30th and 31st respectively. Other great acts include Laura Mvula, King Tha vs Blk Jks, Spoek Mathambo, Petite Noir, The Brother Moves On, and Dookoom.
The festival has grown immensely since 2005, expanding to include a variety of genres and spreading to other cities and countries, such as Paris and London. Afropunk Johannesburg was a natural progression for the festival, and Matthew says, “Desire met opportunity, created from the love of building community. We wouldn’t be complete
It’s not just about the music, though – Afropunk is an arts festival, after all. There will be art exhibitions, installations and murals. The Bites and Beats Food Festival and The SpinThrift Market are two events that will be happening within the greater festival, with a range of crafts, food and other items on offer. Located in the Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve, only an hour from Johannesburg in Heidelberg, the Suikerbosrand hiking trails offer day hikes; those looking for more of a challenge can take on the overnight hikes. The major feature is the Suikerbosrand Mountain Range.
The Hennops Hiking Trail is only 45 minutes from both Johannesburg and Pretoria and consists of three trails, each with its own unique features and difficulty level. The trail also features a suspension bridge, cable car and interesting historical sites.

Summer 2018 trends There’s a sense of time travelling, borrowing from the past to create new and comforting designs WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

dette Uys, Eye Candy Interiors, believes the summer of 2018 will be all about connecting with our inner nomad. “I like the phrase ‘nomadic time traveller’, where nothing is off limits. We’re borrowing heavily from other eras and parts of the world and bringing together elements that create something new, more than the sum of its parts.” She says there’s a worldwide shift in consciousness, and it’s spilling into all areas. It’s about more artistry, authenticity, longevity, mindfulness, awareness and not being wasteful. There’s an appreciation for all things handmade and artisanal, and a worldwide trend away from rampant consumerism, to more selective buying, she says.
Softer and simpler
Architecture and surfaces seem harder and more minimalistic, but in decor, there’s a clear Scandinavian influence of “hygge” and cocooning. The industrial influence may still be big, but it now meets naturals: for example, black metal or brass mixed with warm, rustic wood or marble. You’ll find large, soft throws, floor cushions and more rustic charm. “It’s about finding enjoyment in simple things and seeing the beauty in everyday objects,” says Odette. “Contrast is gorgeous and it’s what

Shapes and metallics
Our love affair with metallics isn’t over. Copper is strongly mainstream, but in 2018, it’s going to be replaced with brassy metallics. Picture a throwback to bygone eras, a reminder of our fascination with all things steampunk. “The same love of contrast goes for mixing different shapes. Previously, if you liked geometric shapes, you stuck to similar patterns and shapes in fabric and furniture. Now there’s more freedom to mix round with geometric, soft with hard. Square sofas are giving way to softer, curvier lines,” says Odette.
Colours and coverings
Colours have become rich and meaningful. From the darkest inky teals (ocean), moody charcoals and deepest emeralds (forest), to the juiciest watermelon (tropical), earthy terracottas, caramels and burnt oranges (desert/nomad). “The richness of the new colours reminds me of paintings by the old masters and the play of light and shade in chiaroscuro,” says Odette. Grey is still the muchloved, go-to neutral, but there’s a shift to warmer, earthier tones. Wallpaper will still be popular in 2018, but it will cover entire rooms

Today, Liliesleaf is a repository of those conversations, of the events and actions that took place here. It is a “site of memory” where the journey to establish and bring about a free and equal South Africa is recounted and
as opposed to just an accent wall. Organic and geometric designs will be big features. Odette believes unusual prints will rule and handpainted or hand-drawn prints and designs will be a strong trend. We’ll see the rise of the thin black line in 2018. The year will feature black-metal-framed cabinetry, tables with black metal legs, black metal and glass hanging pendants.
Calling back the past
Our mothers loved their pot plants and we’re heading that way too. The pot plant trend is on the rise, particularly in beautiful designer pot plant holders. And a library? Odette suggests a library wall is just as effective. In 2018, more than ever, there’ll a clear sense of time travelling, borrowing elements from other eras and places to create something new, comforting and authentic.

Kitchens have reached rock-star status. So much attention is given to kitchen design, and the trends are sizzling hot. “In 2018, you’ll see even more avant-garde kitchen designs, like all-black cabinetry and walls, with an accent wall of white and grey-veined, book-ended marble and loads and loads of (real) greenery,” says Odette.

C
hris Lesser and Steve Clayton are a creative team who left an international ad agency to start Chris and Steve – Creative Services Agency, delivering creative solutions to business problems. They’ve recently moved into offices in central Bryanston. We chat with Steve to find out more. Q: How did your business start? A: Chris is an art director and I’m a copywriter. We stopped “working for the man” in February 2016; took our skills, experience and reputations to the market and presented ourselves as “Team Chris and Steve”, senior freelance creatives. In the next 12 months, between five different agencies, we worked on 10 of the biggest pitches in the country and won nine. It was this success rate that made us realise that we should be winning these accounts for ourselves instead of others and so, in February 2017, we registered Chris and Steve – Creative Services Agency. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: A side from being halfway between our houses, central Bryanston is home to a lot of the bigger ad agencies. Since they were initially our client base, it made sense for us to be located close by.
Q: How did you find your premises? A: The Refinery, a post-production facility, had been a supplier to us for years and we asked them if they had space in their building. We were just lucky that they had space available at the time that we needed it – although at first, it was an unused edit suite. But we soon moved into a bigger office space, still in their building. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: For us to be in their building meant that we were in constant contact with the industry and therefore stayed top of mind when agencies were in need of freelancers. Now that we’re working more for our own clients, having the Refinery’s various resources in the same building is a huge advantage. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Within the Wedgewood Office Park, there’s a range of businesses. In our block, everyone is in one way or another related to the advertising industry. Luma is an animation company, Finetune Studios and Humdrum are sound studios and Boomcandy and the Refinery team are visual effects artists. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: W hen we were initially looking around, we found the area to be quite expensive. But given our relationship with the Refinery and the skill sets that we’re able to offer each other, we were lucky to get a pretty good deal on our current space. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: Being in a service-type industry, we
tend to go to our client whenever possible so as not to inconvenience them. That said, a lot of the people that we deal with live in the Northern Suburbs, so they sometimes prefer to pop in either on the way to work or on the way home for a beer or a glass of wine. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We live in uncertain times and our industry is really feeling the pinch, so our strategy is to only staff up when it’s absolutely essential. We’re moving to a bigger space in the building early next year, though. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Working remotely is the future and as technology and connectivity improve it becomes less and less important to be in the same room. Much like our freelancers can work and correspond with us online, we have on occasion done work for clients in other parts of the world without ever having met them. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Lateral solutions to linear problems. The job of the advertiser is no longer about making pretty pictures. It’s about applying creative thinking to a business problem and producing a strategic solution. How we approach this exercise is what sets Chris and Steve apart from the other players.

ext year is predicted to be a buyers’ market. “The market is going to be affected by business and consumer confidence levels, and we expect these to differ regionally and from area to area,” says Berry Everitt, CEO, Chas Everitt International Property Group. He says there’ll be challenges related to the country’s current political and financial difficulties, but, overall, it will be a buyers’ market – and buying is what the smart investors and consumers will be doing, whether they’re first-time buyers getting a toehold in the market, buy-to-let investors building up their portfolios or existing homeowners upgrading to bigger or more luxurious properties. “A trend bubbling under now is for family members to assist homebuyers to finance their new homes. Parents and grandparents are taking second bonds on their own homes, providing assets or cash as collateral to help younger members of the family become homeowners,” says Everitt. Gated estates and complexes which offer a combination of lifestyle and security
will be sought-after. “Open-plan living is always popular and there’s been a market shift towards low-maintenance community living, whether in smaller complexes or lifestyle estates,” says Maurizio Dalle-Vedove, area specialist, Lew Geffen Sotheby’s International Realty Durban, Durban North and Umhlanga. “We’ll see more focus on retirement villages as the demand continues to outweigh supply and eco-efficient homes and eco-estates will also become more prominent.” Recently built homes in new developments will also prove popular as they satisfy the demand for modern design and make good investments. “With the surge of development property coming on the market, it would be very wise to invest if it’s possible. Being able to purchase a property at today’s prices and only start paying for it in approximately 18 months makes great financial sense,” says Kerry Bailey, principal, Tyson Properties Umhlanga. Developments will not be confined to outlying areas of major centres, either. “Due to the increasing pace
