nyone who’s ever cruised the streets of Jozi knows the sight of the city’s “street surfers” is as much a part of the landscape as that of the high-rise metropolitan skyline. In their tattered clothing and makeshift outfits, the street surfers negotiate the city on flatbed trolleys as they haul large silo bags stuffed full of recyclable materials to make a living.

Choosing to collect and sell waste over a life of begging, crime and unemployment, Thabo and Mokete can be seen surfing their way between the city’s cars, pedestrians and pavements as they take their goods to various dumps around the city in exchange for cash.

“While we face a global climate crisis, only 10% of South Africa’s waste ends up being recycled. Rather than being seen as a nuisance, street surfers should be celebrated for their tenacity and opportunism in the face of a harsh reality and admired for their contribution to society both environmentally and economically,” says Frank.

For these men, like many others, becoming a street surfer was a decision born from necessity. With cold nights spent sleeping on the streets and exhausting long distance

A HELPING HAND Frank has started a BackaBuddy campaign to help the men with basic necessities. “When I met Thabo and Mokete, I asked how I could assist them and their response was heartbreakingly simple. They need help with ‘life’, they said. With support, I hope to provide them with food, clothes and other living expenses for as long as possible.”

But then Thabo and Mokete’s paths crossed with big wave surfer and marine activist Frank Solomon and an unlikely friendship was born. Frank is making it his mission to see that these street surfers are given the respect they’re due.

It marks a new partnership between Heinz Rynners and Brad Cilliers (of Babylon Bar in Illovo and Jacqueline’s Night Club in Pretoria) together with seasoned entrepreneur and chef Thomas Hughes (of Perron and Winner Winner, Greenhouse marking his ninth venture). Head chef Carolina Rasenti, owner of The Great Eastern Asian Restaurant, also brings a wealth of skills and talent to the mix. We spoke to co-owner Thomas to find out more. Q: What’s the main concept behind Greenhouse? A: As the name suggests, we want to bring the outside indoors. To do this, we’ve melded vertical gardens, glass, wood and metals with fresh, inventive cocktails and authentic sharing plates. Our vertical gardens provide fresh herbs, botanicals and other greens for use in our menu. We want to provide an experience that is wall-to-table; in doing so we hope to encourage our patrons to move to a more natural, organic lifestyle.

Q: Why did you choose this location? A: Rosebank is growing. There’s a trend of big business leaving Sandton to move here as it’s more centrally located with better access from all sides of the city. On top of that there are several five-star hotels all within a 3km radius. Most importantly, we identified with the landlord’s vision of what they were trying to achieve with this development, which includes a five-star Marriot hotel as well as new Sony recording studios. Q: What can we expect from the food? A: Greenhouse is about organic, sustainable local ingredients; we support Joburg’s food community by using as many local farms as possible – from their farms to our tables, but also from our walls to our tables. With all our dishes, we champion the suppliers and simply finish off where they started.

The menu has food that we hope will resonate with both the local and international market – tapas with a truly South African twist. Q: What are your signature drinks? A: We’ve got a range of carefully curated cocktails, as well as some really leftfield wine estates that will hopefully surprise the crowd. We’re also offering a weekly brunch aligned with a bubbles offering. Q: Tell us more about the feel of the space. A: We see Greenhouse as an urban oasis, an ideal place to while away the hours sipping on gloriously refreshing cocktails and enjoying a menu designed for sharing, while listening to the coolest beats spun by our resident DJs. The Greenhouse is open from Thursdays to Saturdays from 12pm to 2am, and Sundays from 12pm to 9pm.

“These guys do an incredible job for the environment, yet they live without access to running water and electricity – things we take for granted every day. They’re up from 3am in the morning and graft all the way through to late afternoon. To earn just R300, they need to collect 100kg of plastic. If you do the math on how many bins they’d have to shift through to reach that target, it’ll blow your mind. At the very least, if people, in general, could just respect these guys, it would go a long way,” he says.

T

here are people who love stationery. They were the kids whose pencil bags were always bulging. As adults, their handbags are never without a pen or three. They’re the people who flick through the pages of notebooks before committing pen to paper; the kind of people for whom a hand-bound book is as beautiful and perfect as a painting or sculpture. They’re still in good company. Overseas, books are emerging as an art medium in their own right – and it was this that inspired Victoria Wigzell and Madeleine Dymond to create Young Bucks’ range of notebooks. “We had both spent time in Switzerland, studying the importance of books as an art medium, and we added this knowledge to everything we had learned from hosting workshops,” Victoria informs. She acknowledges that notebooks are available pretty much anywhere you go, and cheaply too – but it’s the story held within each Young Bucks book that makes it special. Young Bucks works only with specific papers, which are stitched and bound within a variety of handmade covers. There’s the marble range, hand-printed according to an age-old technique, as well as the shweshwe range, which are loved by local and

here are times to splurge on a great bottle, and there are times to treat your credit card with a little compassion. January is one of the latter. But that’s no reason to hold back on a great glass of wine, as many of the Cape’s award-winning producers offer superb “second-label” wines. They’re usually crafted from younger vineyards, or fruit that doesn’t quite make the cut for the flagship label, but in the hands of the same winemakers they over-deliver on value and quality. The Kloof Street range is a fine example of just that. Acclaimed winemaker Andrea Mullineux is the talent behind this affordable selection, and while her flagship releases under the Mullineux & Leeu Family Wines label sell for north of R1,000, Kloof Street won’t leave a hole in you pocket. The Kloof Street Swartland Rouge (R130) is drawn from eight vineyards across the region with tinta barocca, syrah, grenache, cinsault and carignan delivering perfume, fruit, spice and body. The Kloof

Street Chenin Blanc (R105) relies on the star grape of the Swartland, drawn from three old vineyards planted more than 38 years ago. Just down the road, Adi Badenhorst is something of a cult figure in the Swartland, excelling at everything from fine wine to agave spirit. The AA Badenhorst Family Wines are a fine choice for special occasions, but his Secateurs range offers remarkable value for everyday drinking, with a red blend, chenin blanc and rosé, priced between R119 and R149. There’s the same skilled winemaking, at a fraction of the price. That applies just as neatly to Seriously Old Dirt by Vilafonté, a Bordeaux-style blend of cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, merlot and malbec from vineyards on the border of Stellenbosch and Paarl. Vilafonté’s flagship Series C and Series M have garnered global acclaim and rightly become local icons, but they come with a hefty price tag. A bottle of Seriously Old Dirt by Vilafonté, on the other hand, sells for around R250 a bottle. A fine addition to the wine rack to tide you over until payday.

These covers are fashioned from the offcuts of fabric, supporting the studio’s waste-free policy. The same ethos inspired Young Bucks’s mini notebooks, which also make use of odd bits of board and paper. The company creates custom books and publications as well. “So many people comment that a book that’s been crafted completely by hand feels different when you hold it,” says Victoria. But that’s not the only reason Young Bucks products are special. She continues, “It’s about supporting a local company that does everything with sustainability in mind, and which strives to create employment.” Victoria is reluctant to call book-making a “dying art”, although – like many other artisanal skills – it falls behind more modern pursuits on the to-do list. Young Bucks is combating this by hosting workshops to pass on the unique skill, and joining forces with several other artists in its Victoria Yards home to enhance and extend the product range. “As a maker, nothing compares to the thrill I receive from using materials and seeing a stack of beautiful books,” she concludes.

here are a number of very nifty wall systems for planting, so if you’re not a handyman or even green fingered, listen to Sean O’Connor, director of Living Green Walls.

plants’ roots moist, especially if the plants are in direct sunlight. Having said that, most living wall systems have built-in water reticulation systems.”

“It’s best to stick with a reliable ‘living green wall’ system that has been designed or engineered to sustain any plants, especially edibles (herbs and vegetables). I would recommend using either the VertiPocket or the MVG plant wall system.”

Sean isn’t convinced about the goodlooking aspect. “You must decide for what purpose you want a planted wall. If you want to feed a family of four, for example, then it’s going to be a ‘functional’ vegetable-producing machine, rather than a beautiful feature that fits into a garden design or interior design. If you’re looking to install a planted wall for beauty’s sake, think twice about planting edibles.”

Looking at the prices, these systems aren’t cheap, but if you’re committed to this for the long haul, it’s worth it. The VertiPocket is 1m long and 1,8m high, holds around 60 edible plants, and can be attached to almost any wall surface (starting retail price around R5,650). The MVG system also attaches to most wall surfaces, is 1,2m long and 2,1m high, 60 pockets, and retails for around R8,700.

“Edibles enjoy a lot of good natural light,” says Sean. Three to four hours a day of direct sunlight will suffice for their growth and flowering (fruiting). Watering is best done on a daily basis to keep the

“Absolutely,” says Sean. “We often refer to that genre of planting as ‘herbaceous plants’ (some edible, some not). Companion planting is key to keeping pests away, but get the advice of your local nursery on what plants to use for specific herbs.” Certain plants are really disliked by pests, and if you companion plant cleverly, you can end up with few invaders – the ideal solution for edible plants.

VERTICAL GARDENING

Keep the wall looking good

It’s not easy when you’re constantly picking for the table. Sean says if you’re creating an edible planted wall that really works for you, it’s best to get a good understanding of what grows best each season. “Then focus on replanting your living wall every season for best results and production. For example, basil grows well in the summer months, but after it has flowered and the cooler winter months kick in, most basil plants start to die back. It’s best at this point to remove the plants from the system, and plant a winter growing seeding like spring onions, kale or lemon thyme.” He adds, “It’s best to avoid plants with deep root systems and bulbous plants (like onion, beetroot and potatoes). Herbs like sweet rocket, flat-leafed parsley and coriander, mint and strawberry are great options for living walls.”

ivonia lies between the Braamfontein Spruit and Sand Spruit and is historically famous for being home to Liliesleaf Farm, where individuals were arrested to appear in what would become the Rivonia Treason Trial. Now a leafy suburb with standalone homes for growing families, apartment blocks for professionals and a fantastic location for business and services, Rivonia is a much sought-after area to live and work. “I love that I travel against the traffic to and from work, so I hardly every waste time on my commute. I feel there are all the shops and parks we need as a young family here as well, which makes running errands and getting around easy and convenient,” says Lyle Anderson, designer and dad of twin boys who has lived in the area for two years.

INSIDER TRADING Thinking of starting a new business or expanding your existing service into buzzy Rivonia? Here are some considerations: Audience: A mix of middle-class young families, single professionals and couples and students Online or brick and mortar: Although bustling with business already, Rivonia is a great spot for a small store or service outlet. The existing businesses will encourage foot traffic and visibility and the retail space should be less expensive (albeit possibly smaller spaces). Potential customers: A fantastic area for niche service such as bicycle shops, florists, shoe-repairs, engravers and anything else you can think of (and potentially need!) Marketing opportunities: Although foot traffic will help a lot with your awareness, the area is quite full of signs, billboards and fly-posters as well as storefronts. Digital advertising would probably serve business well here, especially on community Facebook pages.

Schools “Rivonia Primary is an amazing school. In Gallo Manor, next door to Rivonia is the most incredible preprimary called Peter Wabbit and it truly is a great place to send your little ones,” says Lyle. In addition to these recommendations, schools in the area include Curro Rivonia, the St Peter’s Schools and Nkowa Private School. Given Rivonia’s central placement, many of the schools in the greater Sandton area will be easily accessible as well, so parents really have a wide variety of institutes from which to choose.

Shop Your weekly grocery shopping is taken care of by Rivonia Village, where you can fill the pantry as well as book a holiday, have your hair cut, buy Fido’s favourite treats, and get your blazers cleaned. In the Rivonia Village Centre you’ll also have access to a dentist and a GP for the family’s annual check-ups.

Out and about “We do stay at home a lot with the twoyear-old twins, but we have a lovely dog park we like to visit, and there are two parkruns right by our place: Woodlands and Ernest Ullmann,” says Lyle, who also comments that there are plenty of places to eat at the Rivonia Village. “Our favourite places to go to are RocoMamas and Polpetta in the Wedge Shopping Centre.” When Lyle isn’t taking part in a Saturday morning run, walking the dog (and boys) in the park or running errands at the Village, he enjoys a day at the Morningside Bowls Club. “It’s the best fun to roll a few and have a couple of really cheap drinks and a fantastic pub lunch here.” For Lyle’s young family, the convenience of closely placed key amenities such as medical care, schools and shopping centres as well as the numerous parks and casual restaurants makes Rivonia hard to beat as the perfect platform for a happy home.
