Piquant, palatable and pleasurable
I
t’s a beautiful sunny autumn day as I make my way to the Boland town of Paarl. Usually Thursdays are deadline day, so I’m confined to a desk in the office. But not today. The prospect of tasting winemaker Izele van Blerk’s offerings, paired with chef Mynhardt Joubert’s four-course menu was just too good to pass up. The day’s festivities are structured around the letter “P” – the three wines we’re tasting are all from Izele’s label, The Mentors: a 2013, 2014 and 2016 pinotage, 2011, 2015 and 2016 petit verdot, and the 2012, 2013 and 2014 Perold Tributum, with the food expertly matched. To start is pot bread, pea soup and pork belly; then parmesan-fried gnocchi with puttanesca sauce, pancetta and pecorino and parsley emulsion; pinotage grape preserve with a platter of cheese; and we end with pinotage ice cream, peppered pavlova, pistachio and salted caramel brittle, and charcoal and Wilson toffee panna cotta. Need I say more? Izele is perhaps the luckiest winemaker in the country. KWV purchases grapes from dozens of producers farming thousands of hectares across the Western Cape winelands, allowing the winemaking team access to some of the most interesting sites South Africa has to offer – from specific blocks to the very best rows of vines in a sought-
after vineyard. “The Mentors cellar is a space for us to push the boundaries of our winemaking knowledge,” explains Izele. “A place to experiment with different coopers and winemaking techniques, to discover the best ways to work with new cultivars, or to try new yeasts and perfect natural ferments.” The vineyards themselves provide the inspiration and guiding hand, the true mentorship, to the cellar. Whether they come from the wind-swept West Coast or sun-splashed Stellenbosch, the vine is the true muse for this handcrafted range of award-winning wines. “The vineyard is crucial. As a winemaker I can’t do anything if I don’t have the best grapes,” says Izele. “It’s incredibly important to spend time in the vineyard. I visit each vineyard block at least three times during harvest, to taste the grapes and make sure we harvest the right rows at the right time. In the first few weeks of January you won’t see me in the winery, only in the vineyards.” While a permanent portfolio of eight wines – chenin blanc, sauvignon blanc, grenache blanc, grenache noir, petit verdot, pinotage, Orchestra and Canvas – are released under The Mentors label each year, Izele and the winemaking team have the freedom of pursuing innovative new varietals and blends from every harvest. “It could be a malbec. It could be tannat. It could be grenache noir. Anything that stands out, we’ll try and get it in the bottle. But it has to be exceptional,” says Izele. Exceptional. It’s a word that has long defined The Mentors.

etter known for its babbling brooks than its sauvignon blanc, a handful of wineries are flying the flag for fine wines made amid the rolling green hills of KwaZulu-Natal.
wine room. Here tastings (R60 to R80pp) take in the estate’s syrah, pinotage and merlot. Also look out for the flagship, a dark and full-bodied Black Edition Cabernet Sauvignon.
The lush hills of KZN are not an easy place to grow grapes though, with searing heat and summer rainfall at harvest-time bringing the chance of downy mildew, and hailstorms threatening to hammer the fruit off the vine. On the plus side, the soils are fertile, water is plentiful, and the rump of the Drakensberg allows vineyards to be planted at altitude.
There’s more good cabernet down the road at family-run Abingdon Wine Estate which, back in 2007, was the first to produce a certified estate wine from KwaZulu-Natal grapes. Today the father-and-daughter team of Ian and Laurie Smorthwaite produce an intriguing range of cultivars available for tasting at the Abingdon Wine Bar. White wines form the backbone of the estate, with sauvignon blanc, chardonnay and viognier on offer. Also look out for the Abingdon Savoir Faire, a méthode traditionnelle sparkling wine, matured on the lees and disgorged and corked by hand at Abingdon.
Cathedral Peak Wines takes full advantage of its location in the Central Drakensberg, with cabernet sauvignon, pinotage, merlot, petit verdot and sauvignon blanc vineyards planted more than 1,100m above sea level. The first vineyards took root here in 2007, and today cellar master Flip Smith crafts a compact range of wines offered for sampling (R10 per tasting) at their charming tasting room. Their pinotage is particularly good, with a clutch of gold medals from the Michelangelo Awards. In the heart of the bucolic KZN Midlands, a pair of wineries adds yet another reason to meander your way through the region. At Highgate Wine Estate, which began 22 years ago as a small vegetable farm, five hectares of vineyards produce eight certified wines, all of which can be sipped and swirled in the charming brick-built cellar and PUBLISHED BY TIMES MEDIA PROPERTY PUBLISHING 1st Floor, Block H, Sable Square cnr Bosmansdam and Ratanga roads Milnerton, Cape Town, 087 828 0423

ormerly operating from a market stall at 1 Fox Precinct, director Jeffrey Teddy Zaki says this new store will be their flagship. “We waited forever to get a store here, but it was well worth it because we fully believe that Hyde Park is the only place where our brand will thrive.” This family-owned business is made up of individuals from both Lebanese and French descent, and this beautiful combination is central to the brand’s DNA. “My father Teddy was the runner-up in the BBC Great South African Bake Off and we’re blessed that this has generated momentum for us,” says Jeffrey. He is a qualified restaurant accountant and operator and his sister is a professional pastry chef, while he says his mother keeps them all together and plays peacemaker. “I believe that my family is the unique selling point of this business and are the only reason that it works,” he says.
The store will be a “vehicle of luxury” − think high teas, luxury cocktails and the finest pastries, providing a total feast for the eye and successfully combining new luxury with treasured traditions. Whether it’s nibbling on a quirky unicorn macaron, biting into a pillowy scone smothered in cream, or sipping on some fragrant Earl Grey – Just Teddy will offer something for all tastes.
The store will be a ‘vehicle of luxury’ – think high teas, luxury cocktails and the finest pastries
The store opened on 23 March and according to Jeffrey has been packed with clientele eager to try out their various pastries and treats. “My grandparents were stowaways from Lebanon and paved their way to success. I believe that this ‘rags to riches’ story is deeply engraved within my family, in the same way that Just Teddy initially started as a market pop-up store,” says Jeffrey. It’s gratifying to see then that hard work and pushing yourselves to the limit, can eventually lead to sweet success.

Heritage homes ins and outs Before changing a structure or building older than 60 years, check what the current laws, bylaws and regulations have to say before proceeding with caution WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER
IMAGE: SHUTTERSTOCK
A
dditions, alterations and demolition of heritage homes are strictly controlled by the National Heritage Resources Act (No 25 of 1999). Closely aligned, are provincial and municipal regulations, all of which dictate specific requirements. In KwaZulu-Natal – which we use as reference here – a new provincial act (KwaZulu-Natal Amafa and Research Institute Act No 5 of 2018) came into being in December last year after the heritage unit amalgamated with Amafa/ Heritage KZN. “But,” says Ros Devereux, head: built environment section, KZN Amafa and Research Institute, “it does not fundamentally change the position regarding protection of all buildings or protected structures over 60 years of age.”
What does the KZN Act protect?
Apart from provisions that allow for proclamation and listing of individual buildings, it also allows for the protection of groups of buildings forming a conservation area or a protected area. Among other protections, the Act refers to general protections. Section 37 refers to General Protection: Structures: “No structure which is, or which may reasonably be expected to be, older than 60 years, may be demolished, altered or added to without the prior written approval of the Institute having been obtained on written application to the Institute.”
Evaluation of conservation worthiness
There’s a substantial list under a number of categories, such as those under Architectural Significance: Intrinsic Design Quality; Building Type; Period; Details; Technology; and Association with a prominent architect/builder.
Criteria for approval
The reviewers look at details and overall principles. They’re likely to approve applications that are sensitive to the conservation of the built environment, that involve the least intervention possible and the most necessary to sustain the continued use of the building. Out of form are: Alterations to roofs 1 Enclosure of verandas 2 Replacement of wooden 3 veranda posts with brick or precast concrete columns Plastering and/or painting 4 of stone or facebrick Replacing lime plaster 5 with cement plaster Replacing windows and doors with 6 those that don’t match the existing in proportion and materials, like steel or aluminium casements to replace wooden sliding sashes, or sliding doors to replace French doors Full or partial replacement of 7 timber floors with concrete slabs on fill that would affect under-floor ventilation, blocking of air vents
under timber floors, the removal of encaustic/traditional ceramic tiles and their replacement with modern ceramic or Italian tiles, etc. The use of unconventional and 8 untested products that can cause damage to sensitive material if not properly tested under all conditions over the long term The inappropriate and over-use of 9 mock-heritage products, like “broekie lace” which is not appropriate to a Union period (1910 to 1960) building 10 Over restoration – the least intervention is the most desirable
Flouting the law
There have been numerous contentious incidences where laws pertaining to what you’re allowed to do with heritage buildings have been ignored or circumvented. The law is clear on demolition permits. “In most cases, the reviewers will err on the side of conservation and cannot be expected to grant demolition permits simply because the owner has neglected the building or has purchased a neglected building. The municipal bylaws require that owners maintain their properties.”
Compliance
To control the above, the Institute has established a built environment section to handle all matters pertaining to the conservation of the built environment. There are different application forms, and requirements need to be met.

Parktown North
Parktown North is one of Joburg’s oldest northern areas, flanked by popular suburbs Rosebank and Parkhurst WORDS: EMILY SHAW

T
he people make Parktown North, says Hello Joburg magazine’s Bianca Spinner, long time Parktown North resident. “Some are polite, some posh, but most of them are friendly and helpful.” There certainly is a wide variety of people adding to this vibrant community and that has a lot to do with the age of the suburb, the erf sizes and renovated clusters.
Property Created in the gold rush of 1886 to house the Randlords humbler relatives, 200 years later the reality is quite the opposite. Parktown North is now known for its large family homes with the distinct charm of those years, spacious gardens and correlating prices. Favoured by growing families but also by single professionals, the area caters to both life stages, in space and amenities for families but also in a thriving entertainment life
for the more footloose and fancyfree. This fabulous duality makes the suburb a fool-proof investment for any potential house-hunter.
Schools Parktown North is a young mom’s dream as it’s full of sweet but wellestablished play schools like Peeka-Boo Playgroup, Little Lamps Preschool, Golden Generation Montessori School and Greenpark Nursery School. For the older students, private high schools are slightly further afield but against traffic from most directions. Roedean Senior School (for girls) is the closest in Parkhurst and St John’s (for boys) is relatively close by in Houghton. St Mary’s (girls) and St David’s are still under 8km away and Brescia and St Stithians less than 10km away in Bryanston. If a public school is what you’re after, the Parktown High Schools (one for girls and one for boys) are respectively located in Parkview and Parktown
and have an excellent reputation both academically and in sport.
Explore Whether its date night for mum and dad or a long bistro lunch with friends, Parktown North has something for everyone. “My favourite place to catch up with a friend is Douglas and Hale. It used to be The National and has been given a new life as a wine and snack bar. It’s cosy, has the biggest wine list I’ve ever seen and the energy picks up at night on a weekend,” says Bianca Joynt, Parktown North frequenter and business unit director. James Diack’s famous wild boar ragu can be enjoyed at seasonal, farmto-table eatery Il Contadino after a leisurely walk up 7th Avenue. Popular tattoo parlour Fallen Heroes is a mere 850m away for the more creatively inclined, as well as Gallery MOMO. The MOMO is currently showing an exhibition with Angolan Portuguese artist Pedro Pires, entitled Six of one and half a dozen of the other, but also has permanent exhibits for browsing. “We really have the coolest eateries and hangouts in town,” says Spinner, who refers to the ambience in the area as “truly hospitable” and as a result, that Parktown North feels distinctly like a village. And this village loves a dog! The suburb is teeming with smart pedigrees to playful pooches – resting below sidewalk tables, trotting along the storefronts on a lead, or enjoying a run in a neighbouring park, they are welcome almost everywhere. One such park is Verity Park, well known for its small public pool as well as its child- and dog-friendly layout. Here a lot of families choose to have birthday parties for small kids and there are often informal exercise groups lunging and squatting at daybreak and sunset. Parktown North really does offer the resident a fabulous, well-balanced life of outdoors, culinary delight and beautiful living spaces, but even if you’re not quite ready to invest, the suburb is a lovely weekend retreat with so much to discover and enjoy.
