Eco angels unite W
henever I hear of everyday people making a difference in the world, it makes me realise that I, too, need to start making changes for the better. It doesn’t have to be huge gestures – if everyone just did their bit, however small, the impact would be huge.
And while getting praise and honours bestowed on you for doing the right thing isn’t necessary, it’s nice to receive recognition for a job well done. Locally, we have the Eco-Logic Awards, which honours individuals and organisations who continue to make a difference to the environment. As part of its aim to drive green consciousness among consumers and integrate a “green agenda” into the future of residential property, Pam Golding Properties again sponsored the Eco-Angel Award at this year’s awards. Says Anthony Stroebel, head of strategy, Pam Golding Properties, and a director of the Green Building Council of South Africa, “This is an annual celebration of the visionaries and innovators or ‘eco heroes’ who are not only actively promoting a more sustainable world, but who are also finding solutions to the earth’s most pressing environmental challenges.” This year’s Eco-Angel Award winner is Rhian Berning of Plettenberg Bay, founder and pioneer of the Eco Atlas blog, a unique online platform which empowers citizens to vote with their wallets for a better world for people and planet. Rhian also initiated Renew Able Plett, a localised campaign running Eco Brick projects with thousands of children at schools and incentivising businesses and the public to drop singleuse plastics, support local suppliers and reduce their waste to landfill. Rhian got the Schools Environmental and Educational Development (SEED) organisation off the ground with its first funding from the Shuttleworth Foundation and project-managed SEED on the Cape Flats, nurturing food growing at schools and empowering teachers with the tools and skills to use food gardens as a teaching resource. She then went on to found the Nature Network, fostering a sense of interconnection with nature for hundreds of children across Cape Town.
Although the hotel has only 68 rooms (seven of which are penthouses), its facilities are extensive – including an indoor pool, a Fit Bar gym, a hair salon, a flagship Amani spa complete with zen garden and outdoor heated infinity pool, and a sophisticated 500-delegate conference venue.

In terms of food and drinks, there are several options. The Nova Deli serves casual breakfasts, lunches and dinners, with plenty of health, vegan and vegetarian options. Downstairs, the Pebbles bar serves smoothies, light bites like poke bowls, and a range of drinks to enjoy around the pool before or after spa treatments. As the hotel’s more formal dining offering, the H restaurant is headed by RASA award-winning chef Dirk Visser. “While it’s fine dining in terms of service and setting, the H very much offers home-style cooking with well-proportioned food,”
says communications manager Rene van Dyk. She describes it as a continental menu, with Eastern and European influences that still feature bold local flavours emphasising fresh locally-sourced produce. Already, the H is proving popular with residents from the surrounding development, and the hotel is keen to establish it as a worthy restaurant destination in its own right. The H also features four private dining areas including one where glass windows slide open to give diners a front row seat to the action in the kitchen. Another room has its own private kitchen that you can book out while a private chef prepares your meal, and then there’s a wine cellar and whiskey lounge too. “Ultimately, the idea is to offer all four rooms as a food journey, where you enjoy starters in one dining room, main courses in the second and third, and desserts and cognacs in the whiskey lounge with views over the seventh hole,” says Rene. And as for predinner drinks, there’s also the Skybar, which is perfect for watching the sun set while lounging on one of the plush couches with a glass of prosecco in hand. With its luxurious design and air of exclusivity, The Houghton has set itself up to appeal to Joburg’s visitors as much as its locals who may be looking to take some time out from city live to enjoy the sumptuous setting.
Runner-up Craig Foster of the Sea Change Project, has spent over 30 years making films of great anthropological significance. He has spent countless hours in the kelp forests of False Bay, and has discovered over eight new species and 40 new behaviours, and even had a newly discovered species of shrimp named after him – Heteromysis Fosteri. Craig is co-creator of the Sea Change project, a not-for-profit trust comprising explorers, free divers and storytellers who have come together to conserve our unique Great African Sea Forest. In third place, Mashudu Makhokha, director of Lapalala Wilderness School, has built up a well-deserved reputation for developing and running a centre of excellence in the field of environmental education at the school. He manages a team of educators who have inspired young people to discover the value of biodiversity in our natural world. Truly an inspiration to all of us.

ome wine blends are classics, time-honoured combinations that have worked together beautifully for centuries. There’s the red bordeaux of cabernet sauvignon, merlot and cabernet franc, sometimes with petit verdot and malbec for good measure. The white version sees sauvignon blanc and semillon playing nicely together. In the Rhône valley syrah comes together with mourvèdre, grenache and occasionally viognier. But winemaking has always been ripe for disruption, and while local winemakers are no slouch at the classics, some of the most interesting wines emerging from local cellars sees a wide-ranging array of cultivars brought together… with impressive results. Constantia Glen is known for its classical bordeaux-style blends, but under his own label – Van Wyk Family Wines – winemaker Justin van Wyk likes to experiment. In the Olivia Grace
he brings together chenin blanc, riesling, chardonnay and viognier. “I always wanted to make a Cape White that could showcase the diversity of Western Cape soils and climates in one harmonious blend,” explains Justin, who says the addition of riesling, from an old vineyard in Stellenbosch, brings “acidity and freshness to the blend”. Another standout is the Stark-Condé Field Blend, from the Jonkershoek valley. Grapes are from a two-hectare vineyard planted with a variety of vines, picked on the same day and fermented together in barrel. The blend is built on roussanne and chenin blanc, but there’s verdelho and viognier for acidity and aromatics too. It’s a delicious white blend with subtle oak tannin, ideal for food. Out in the Tulbagh valley, Fable Mountain Vineyards’ winemaker Tremayne Smith releases his own wines under “The Blacksmith” label. His Limbo Red spices up a typical Swartand blend of grenache, carignan and cinsault with the addition of durif, a niche cultivar in the Cape. “The cultivar itself brings a lot of structure and colour,” says Tremayne of the durif. “It adds backbone and density to wines.” More of a splurge, but also worth the spend is the Bouchard Finlayson Hannibal. A most unusual blend of both classic French and Italian cultivars – it has sangiovese, pinot noir, nebbiolo, shiraz, mourvédre and barbera! – produces a remarkable wine that’s both elegant, complex and has bold fruit flavours. Cellar master Peter Finlayson dubs the blend “an orchestra of flavours”, and this is definitely one for the cellar.
uilding an inclusive circular economy: recycling with reclaimers” is a Joburg-based pilot project – launched by the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO) in collaboration with Unilever and the University of the Witwatersrand – seeking to give reclaimers the recognition they deserve, by raising consumer awareness around the role they play. Says Nobuhle Ngubane, brand manager of Sunlight Dishwashing Liquid at Unilever, “South Africa has a recycling rate of 55%. It’s comparatively high, but that’s thanks purely to the reclaimers, who ensure that we recycle 90% of post-consumer packaging.” By drawing attention to this impressive figure, the pilot project also hopes to encourage consumers to separate their recyclable waste, so that reclaimers can do their job more efficiently – because, as Nobuhle points out, the more waste we’re able to recycle, the more packaging can be made from recycled material. “That’s the basis of an inclusive economy,” she points out, noting that at present, 74% of all recyclable materials are collected from landfills. If these could be collected at an earlier point within the cycle, it would become far more effective.
Nobuhle adds that Unilever will be donating a service fee for reclaimers involved in the project, because although they receive compensation for the materials they hand in for recycling, they’re not remunerated for the service they provide to the country. This is set to change. Parliament, being aware of the funds that are saved through their work, is aiming to integrate reclaimers into the formal economy, understanding that this will further contribute to the creation of a more robust circular economy. The pilot will be launched in September and runs for six months, after which learnings accumulated from the project will be handed over to Government to allow for a similar model to be rolled out nationally. “There are several issues that we hope to highlight through this project, one of the most critical being that we all have a role to play in building a no-waste, circular economy. Perhaps even more than this, we’re trying to make people understand the reclaimers we see lugging their laden trolleys across our roads or rifling through our rubbish are doing some of the most important work in reducing our environmental impact,” Nobuhle concludes.

A
kitchen needs to be a strong marriage of functionality, flow and good looks with the integration of the owner’s tastes and preferences. “Each customer’s kitchen is unique — innovative and stylish, sure, but also functional, well thought out and easy to use,” says Brendon Watkins of Capital Kitchens.
Sustainable
Gas has long been the fuel of choice for cooks – induction or gas stoves are the greener options. For all other appliances, check the ratings – it not only saves money, but importantly, is less harmful to the planet. Look for fridges, dishwashers and washing machines rated A or A+ when you replace yours – close to 60% of energy used in a washing machine goes towards water heating, so the less water used, the less energy.
Hardware innovation
The focus on hardware has ramped up considerably. “Now we’re looking at small, luxury details that make life easier,” says Watkins. And provide good design elements. Slow-close drawers, gas-stay cupboard doors, anti-slam doors, Tiptronic (touch) doors and drawers, carousels, butler larders, counter pop-up plug points and dedicated cellphone or tablet chargers are items that fit the bill.
Storage
“Many homeowners forget how much storage space they need to make the space functional. Use the available space for creative storage solutions,” says Adrian Goslett, regional director and CEO, RE/MAX Southern Africa. “Much revolves around invisibility – conceal the fridge, the microwave, even the door handles and light switches. Cupboards are customised to hold everything unsightly, and cupboard doors and floors are all pared down to a stylish simplicity,” says Watson.
Countertops
Some style trends are shifts rather than complete changes. “Like the old, thicker 32mm granite countertop,” says Watson. “Now the market wants sleeker ones, which are not only more cost-effective and use less material (the greener option), but just look better.” Uncoloured concrete surfaces – sealed, matt or sheen finish – are relatively inexpensive in chunky, slim or sleek. As a countertop, bamboo is a sustainable material with antibacterial properties, in differing thicknesses and finishes.
Lighting
With kitchens as much living spaces as workplaces, the lighting needs to accommodate the change between a living and working environment.
WIN A
Balancing mood and functional lighting can be tricky, making dimmers and timed lighting settings popular. The greenest option (quality LED downlighters) is not only more affordable, but last years longer than incandescent bulbs. “The trends range from large metal industrial pendant lamps to massive and glam chandeliers. This is often predicated on the size of the kitchen and whether it has distinct zones – cooking, eating, storage and so on,” says Watkins.
Clever kitchens
Remote control via cellphones or timers allows lights, ovens, music stations and televisions to be managed from a distance. A green and smart food recycler turns your food scraps into fertiliser. Watkins recommends integrating a recycle centre into your cupboards, with partitions for recycling different materials.
Work flow
You don’t want to be avoiding poorly positioned islands while wafting from one end of the kitchen to the other piecing together supplies. “The age-old rule of thumb still applies: design your kitchen to form a triangle between your sink, refrigerator and stove to ensure the best flow of traffic through the space,” says Goslett.

R8,2m warehousing facility for Denver L
eading JSE-listed Reit Emira has invested R8,2m in a refurbished warehouse facility located in the popular industrial hub of Denver, Joburg. “We have identified a need for affordable, modern and convenient warehousing space and the Denver property addresses this perfectly,” says Emira Property Fund COO Ulana van Biljon. Located in an established industrial area with easy highway access, security and ample electrical power, the new facility offers contemporary
warehousing of nearly 9,800m2, including more than 1,000m2 of comfortable office space with a new entrance. Invest in Mauritius from about R3,5m S
ince recent changes in the Mauritian government’s property investment legislation made it easier to invest, foreigners have been streaming to the island. Foreign buyers can now purchase property in popular developments with close ocean proximity, starting from R3,3m (about MUR8m). Severine Pietersen, Seeff Mauritius, says an Economic Board of Development report shows that by September last year, 2,737 units were sold to foreigners, of which 22% were from SA. “There are also many South Africans who live in Mauritius on work
R600m retail boost for PE’s Boardwalk precinct T
he retail area of Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World in Port Elizabeth will be upgraded and extended in a R600m redevelopment project next year. Flanagan & Gerard Property Development & Investment and the Moolman Group have signed this agreement with Sun International subsidiary Emfuleni Resorts. This project will more than double the retail space in the precinct when it relaunches in 2021. Boardwalk Casino and Entertainment World is a short walk from Hobie Beach and
currently comprises the Boardwalk Casino and five-star Boardwalk Hotel, as well as conference facilities, existing retail and a cinema complex. The Boardwalk precinct’s retail component will increase to 26,000m 2 and includes the new Sun Park Square where major events will be hosted. With 17ha available for redevelopment, the Boardwalk Mall is only the first phase. In addition, a total of R11m will be invested in upgrading surrounding roads.

Property development winners celebrated T he 2019 winners of the Sapoa Property Development Awards for Innovative Excellence were announced last month. The awards recognise work by property owners, designers, engineers and visionaries in South Africa. The overall winner was Discovery Joint Venture, also the winner in the
Corporate Office Developments category. Discovery Head Office was developed in a joint venture by Growthpoint Properties and Zenprop Property Holdings in Sandton.
It houses almost 7,500 people on 112,000m² of gross lettable area in an eight-storey structure above a parking
basement accommodating 5,667 cars. Rabie Property Group’s Sable Park in Cape Town’s Century City won the Commercial Office Developments category. Designed by dhk Architects and constructed by WBHO, Sable Park consists of two buildings – the one is 8,300m² and the other 8,000m². Completed by the end of last year, this development received a five-star rating from Green Star SA and has attracted prime tenants. Discovery occupies the larger of the two buildings, whereas MTN, ICLEI, Byte Orbit, Sasfin and TAL share the second structure.
Thavhani Mall in Thohoyandou, Limpopo, scooped the award for Rural and Small Town Development. The 50,000m2 regional mall opened in 2017, introducing the largest selection of shopping and leisure retail in the region with 140 stores. It was developed by Flanagan & Gerard Property Development & Investment, Thavhani Property Investments, and Vukile Property Fund. MDS Architecture was responsible for Thavhani Mall’s design and its main construction contractor was WBHO. The shopping mall is in the precinct positioned to be the future economic hub of northeastern Limpopo.

Should you want a later evening distraction, Pineslopes is also home to the famous Stones Pool Bar and Billy The Bum’s. The newly renovated Fourways Mall is conveniently situated in the centre of the area and has virtually every retail category covered here – from Apple Store to Burger King and everything in between. Outdoor enthusiasts will love the Norscot Koppies Nature Reserve in nearby Douglasdale where twice a month the public can walk the trail and bird-watch. Northern Farm Reserve also caters to hikers and walkers, and the more adventurous can take in the bush from the saddle.
