he South African events industry is a thriving one, with a host of events and exhibitions happening each month at exhibition venues and conference halls across the country – with each major city centre boasting showgrounds of international quality. very weekend hundreds of walkers, kiddies, dogs and athletes take to Delta Park, Joburg’s favourite green lung squeezed between Blairgowrie and Victory Park. The sheer size of the park with streams and bike tracks, running paths and lakes allows visitors to have fun with their sport of choice but with no risk of over-crowding. From cycling to Tai Chi, cricket to horse-riding, running to volleyball, once thing’s for sure – after a few hours someone’s going to be hungry. Enter Don Quixote, the second restaurant under the Delta Café ownership, now offering delicious dinners and private functions. Situated just a few stairs above the existing restaurant, you can immediately see

the venue’s potential for a rollicking birthday party. The decor and design are pretty plain, which is a big plus for those keen on having a theme-led event but for casual diners may be a little bland. That said, the incredible views across the park from the deck are not some that you’d like over-powered with fussy design. Holding true to their original ethos family-loving and dog-welcoming, Don Quixote is a great spot for a Saturday lunch after a leg stretch in the park. A real hit on the menu is the pizza – made from unbleached, stone-ground local flours, the bases are handmade and cold-fermented for over 18 hours. This level of care means that quantities are limited – make sure you get your order in before the lunch rush descends!
If carbs are off the cards for you, try a Banting burger with grilled mushroom and broccoli mash, or a hot beef salad with salsa verde. Mini burgers and toasties are available for the kids, but the real hit for them will be the playground conveniently placed in line of sight with the tables. Kiddos can swing, slide and climb here in a shaded spot. Because of this child-friendliness, Don Quixote is an excellent place for baby showers where guests might have little hangers-on. The bar has a good choice of draught beers, the wine list is suitable for the casual lunch fare, and the service is friendly. With all of that, plus the views, the distractions for the kids, the delicious pizza and the fact that Fido can come along, you have a go-to answer for fun family afternoons.

ine critic and author Cathy Marston established the International Wine Education Centre (IWEC) in 2011 and was the first in Africa to offer courses from the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET). WSET is the world’s largest provider of wine and spirits qualifications, and their international recognition makes them ideal for anyone considering a career in wine and hospitality. But the courses are just as enjoyable for newcomers to the world of wine. “Level one is a great introductory course for people who don’t know much about wine, but they know what they like,” says Cathy. “It’s a one-day course all
about getting the basics in place.” Level two, the most popular course, is for those looking to deepen their wine knowledge, while the level three and level four (diploma) courses are geared towards professionals in the hospitality industry. Happily, you don’t have to start at the beginning, with online quizzes available to help you judge which course you should start with.
Cape Wine Academy
The Cape Wine Academy was founded in 1979, and offers an array of wine courses ranging from an introduction to the world of wine through to ongoing professional training for the hospitality industry. The course focus is firmly on
the wines of South Africa, with some international context. The one-day South African Wine course is the most popular, with niche programmes covering everything from wine and food pairing, to South African brandy appreciation. Specialised wine service and sommelier training is also available.
KZN School of Wine
Award-winning sommelier and winemaker Laurie Cooper offers accredited WSET courses, both online and at the family-owned Abingdon Wine Estate in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands. But for those just starting out, the one-day “Beginner’s Guide to Wine” is ideal, and includes a tour of the Abingdon vineyards and cellar as well as lunch on the estate.

A
ndy has always loved food. One of his earliest memories takes him back to a fete he visited when he was just 10 years old – while all his friends were spending their money on rides and candy floss, he wandered over to a jubilee table and found an unfamiliar piece of equipment: a jaffle. “I still have that jaffle; it’s my oldest possession.” Although he didn’t come from a family of chefs, he embraced the creativity of food and put his passion into practice when he established a corporate catering company. After that had run its course, he dabbled in various fields, including a stint as sales manager on Top Gear Live, a year living in a caravan brewing beer as part of a permaculture project, some stand-up comedy, and a post as PR manager at a Mozambique resort. Throughout these many changes, Andy kept making his sauces on the side until, two years ago, he realised that he missed dedicating all his time to food. Thus, The Saucerer was born. But why sauces? “Sauce is a story on its own. It can take you anywhere you want to go.” Not that sauces – including his legendary peri peri sauce, which he says, “goes with everything except Pronutro” – peri mayo, gourmet sandwiches and various savoury jams, are the only goodies on offer at his store within Parkview’s Perfect Cup coffee shop. Epicures will also find a range of charcuterie, olives, sourdough breads and cheeses – delicacies which have been selected because “they’re bloody good”.
And because their production has an element of consciousness. “A big part of what I do revolves around responsible consumption and reducing carbon footprint,” Andy explains, hence his insistence on paper bags and the introduction of refillable glass jars. He also offers gift bags fashioned from offcuts produced by the Dignity Dreams project, which provides sanitaryware to teenage girls. It’s a way of reducing waste while also providing an income stream, he says. Next up, Andy reveals, is an expansion into vegetarian and vegan options, as well as a larger selection of free range meat.

hether you’re buying as an investment or putting down roots for your growing family, Birdhaven is a fabulous, different option. Declared a suburb in the late forties, you’ll find mostly large, standalone homes on big plots – with the price tag to match. ACROBRANCH
Investors and house-flippers have cottoned on to this little corner of the north, and many of these old gems are being renovated and subdivided to accommodate lock-up-and-go housing, cottages and clusters. Birdhaven is also home to quite a few roomy apartment blocks. Like many of these developments built decades ago, older flats will need a bit of work – but with a new bathroom and kitchen, these spacious spots will bring in a pretty penny from singles, couples, retired folk and even single-child families who desire a low-maintenance lifestyle.
Schools Developers and real-estate professionals use Birdhaven’s access to top schools as one of area’s
biggest drawcards. Nearby schools include Kingsmead College, Pridwin Prep, St Mary’s, St David’s Marist, St John’s College and Roedean. Hyde Park is just around the corner and tiny tots can attend Riviera Nursery School right on your doorstep in Birdhaven. As a result of this proximity to education, the area is also full of extra-curricular activities – ballet schools, extra maths tutors, and various sport coaching and music lesson offerings are handily available for all ages and levels.
Out and about The sun’s out and you or the kids and the dog need to burn off some energy – to the James and Ethel Gray Park you go! Originally a bird sanctuary – and from whence Birdhaven got its name – this little park claims to be the best sunrise vantage point in the whole of Joburg. Here the Sandspruit cuts through steep banks (giving you that great view) and offers open lawns, indigenous plants and flowers to admire, and walking paths for a good stroll. If a game of catch isn’t enough to tire little Timmy out, book a session with
Acrobranch – handily available in the very same park. Consisting of treetop obstacle courses and zip-lines, this exhilarating activity makes for a fantastic Saturday afternoon family outing, a great kids birthday party, and even a good corporate teambuilding exercise if you’re looking for something a little different.
Date night Your sitter is booked, your Uber simply needs to be summoned, and you’re both ready to take a night off the responsibilities of adult life. But where to from Birdhaven? Start the evening off with a glass of chardonnay in the cool, dappled courtyard of Arbour Café, a French-inspired cafe behind the Wrenrose Court boutiques. Enjoy a leisurely three-course meal here, with starters like wild mushroom galette, a main of duck or salmon and round it off with a salted caramel and apple crepe. If the conversation is flowing and it’s not bedtime quite yet, move on for an after-dinner tipple at the achingly hip Sin+Tax in Rosebank. Try one of their mind-blowing creations like the Fizz Pop; rhubarb champagne, vodka, sour cherry, sherbet and cacao. It’s a great after-dinner or post-theatre bar and the ultimate people-watching perch.

Radisson Hotels achieves continental success
T
he Radisson Hotel Group’s Radisson Blu, the fastest growing hotel brand in Africa, has surpassed its expected Indian Ocean development objective of doubling this portfolio by 2022, and is now aiming to triple it in 2020. The Indian Ocean is a key market in the group’s African development
strategy, with seven hotels in operation or being developed in the region. This forms part of Radisson Hotel Group’s African portfolio comprising almost 100 hotels in operation and under development across 33 markets. Already established in Mauritius, the group has expanded to two other Indian Ocean islands – Madagascar
and Reunion. “Our development strategy in the Indian Ocean focusses on both leisure and business segments for resorts, hotels, serviced apartments and mixed-use developments across our five hotel brands. Seychelles is the next priority island in the group’s expansion strategy,” says Radisson senior director of development Erwan Garnier. “As part of our aggressive African development plan, 65% of our future hotel supply will come from our newer brands, specifically Radisson, positioned in the full-service upscale segment and already gaining significant traction across Africa, and Radisson Collection, in the affordable luxury segment. We’ll continue in the lifestyle upscale segment of the market with the Radisson RED brand, building on the momentum gained by the success of the Radisson RED hotel in Cape Town. Finally, we will keep taking advantage of the success of Radisson Blu, our flagship upper upscale brand that remains the fastest growing on the continent,” Garnier says.

Charles Vining, Seeff’s MD in Sandton, says millennials and a mix of local and expat clients who want to be close to the business environment, are some of the groups drawn to the popular rental hotspots in Sandton and surrounds. Vining says they’re witnessing a trend in Sandton where many millennials are choosing to rent as opposed to buying. “Millennials like the relative freedom of renting versus owning. We see few young people renting straight after graduating. Most work for a year or so, possibly living at home or sharing with friends, before renting a home of their own. “Security is a major consideration when considering rental property in Sandton. Wi-Fi and off-street parking are almost non-negotiable, while developments with gyms, clubhouses or recreational areas like parks and dams are big draw cards. “Traffic also has a big impact on the location decision of most tenants. For family tenants, school proximity trumps most decisions.”
Randburg
Duane Butler, GM, Seeff Randburg, says, in general, demand for rental property here has declined and rental rates are down due to affordability issues. Butler says despite this there’s still great demand for rental properties in Randburg, especially those bordering the Sandton suburbs due to accessibility to the Sandton CBD. Rental property in suburbs like Greenside and Jukskei Park (that

Khosi Sibiya and Phindi Mphahlele, owners, Seeff Soweto, say the rental market here is vibrant, especially among millennials. “Not many people are able to buy a property in the current economic climate and this, coupled with the fact that there are many new developments taking place in the area at the moment, is fuelling Soweto’s rental market.” Millennials are the largest generation residing in Soweto at the moment and they’re also the group who rent the most. Millennials are moving out of their parent’s homes and forming their own independent households and like the generations before them, they prefer to rent before they buy.
