nother week, another proudly South African story. This time it’s two Paarl institutions – Nederburg and KWV – deserving a mention or two. They’re the only South African wine brands to have been included in the highly anticipated top-50 list of “The World’s Most Admired Wine Brands” by UK-based publication Drinks International. The top 50 were selected by over 200 renowned names in the global wine industry and strengthened by the expertise of wine market research and consultancy firm Wine Intelligence, which helped conduct the 2019 survey. With KWV in 45th and Nederburg in 47th position, the achievement puts them in the company of several famous wine brands. Among the luminaries on the list are Australia’s Penfolds (1st), Spain’s Torres (2nd), New Zealand’s Villa Maria (3d), Chile’s Concho Y Toro (4th), and French icon M. Chapoutier (5th). According to Drinks International, to make it onto the list demands consistent or improving quality; a reflection of region or country of origin; a responsiveness to the needs and tastes of target audiences; excellent marketing and packaging; and a strong appeal to a wide demographic.

We’re especially thankful to our viticulture and winemaking teams for their zealous focus on innovation, not merely for the sake of newness, but to see how they can continually improve what they do. They continue to explore new winegrowing areas, plant new vines, and trial new cultivars, blends and techniques to maintain Nederburg’s name as the byword in South African wine excellence. It’s their adventurous spirit and sense of curiosity that drives them to keep discovering and experimenting.” KWV, who turned a 100 last year, has a global footprint with a portfolio of brands represented in about 100 markets. This global recognition is undoubtedly due to KWV’s flexibility and ability to source the building blocks for its wines from various vineyard sites. All we can say is well done and keep up the good work!

W

inemakers love to wax lyrical about wines expressing the vineyard’s terroir, that curious combination of soil, aspect and climate that give each grape, and the resulting wine, its own unique character. And adventurous winemakers are increasingly adding a microscopic dimension to that notion, relying on wild yeasts over commercially produced cultures. Fermentation is the foundation of winemaking, as yeasts turn sugars into alcohol. While commercial yeasts are stable and predictable, and wild yeasts quite the opposite, many winemakers feel it’s worth the risk. “I believe commercial yeasts deliver onedimensional wines,” says Johnathan Grieve, proprietor of biodynamic wine estate Avondale. “These natural yeasts are cultured in our vineyards, so it ties into our goal of bringing the uniqueness of Avondale to the fore.” A fine example of that is the Avondale Anima (R260), a chenin blanc from organic vineyards on the Paarl estate. Anima comes from the Latin for “soul”, and this premium barrel-fermented chenin certainly shows off the essence of this Paarl property. Johnathan and Avondale’s winemaker Corne Marais rely solely on wild yeasts carried on the skins of the grapes to spark the fermentation process. While this means fermentation can take up to nine months, Johnathan believes the dozens of strains of wild yeasts contribute to the character and complexity of each wine. As winemaker for the Survivor range from Overhex Wines, Ben Snyman would agree, “Mind, body and soul – this is how wine is really made, without the use of commercial yeasts, so that we can experience the true taste of terroir.” This year saw the maiden release of the Survivor Wild Yeast Syrah (R185), a wine whose full body and dark colour belies its accessible fruit and soft tannins. It’s a great match for roast lamb on the coals, says Ben. Also look out for the Survivor Wild Yeast Chardonnay, to be released later this year. Another wild wine to watch for comes from the Paardeberg, where winemaker Matthew Copeland is a fan of letting nature take its course. His Vondeling Monsonia (R215) is a classic Rhône-style blend of shiraz, Mourvèdre, Grenache and Carignan, wild-fermented in open tanks. With 16 months in the barrel, it’s a bold yet elegant blend that’s wild but wonderful.

pening in October last year, The Little Fox is all about gin – 100 different kinds of gin to be exact. It’s also Joburg’s first-ever dedicated distillery bar and the new home of Ginologist Gin, made by Craft Link Distillers. So where can you find it? Head to the Fox Precinct at 1 Fox Street in Newtown and search for well-known Joburg bartender Gareth Wainwright. You’ll probably find him mixing up a delicious cocktail. With a gin collection from all over South Africa, as well as the rest of the world, The Little Fox hopes to satisfy even the most seasoned of juniper fans.

The fact that gin is mixed with tonic or another mixer also makes it easier for most people to sample, especially when compared to stronger spirits like rum or tequila, which are generally recommended on the rocks.

But why has the gin craze lasted so long? Gareth believes it’s down to variety. “There have been new inventions

awards it had won and its growing popularity, it had outgrown its previous premises. “We started looking not only for a bigger distillery, but for a fullyfledged brand home and we came to the conclusion that Joburg central would undergo a significant revitalisation, and that we wanted to be part of that process,” says CMO Nick Taliakis. The distillery is only two years old and was started by Matt van Wyk, Richard Kolbe and their secret distilling scientist. Their current space includes a small conference room open to corporates and the public, which is also used as a tasting room and masterclass setting where gin lovers can taste and learn to blend their own gin, all accompanied by a delicious lunch.

our doors say something about your interior. “The days of a front door being solely functional, are long gone,” says Rasheed Jada, MD, JAD Doors. “It’s a decorative part of the home and the very first thing guests see when they arrive. It’s an invitation and a welcome to your home, as well as a preview of the inside.” Designers and manufacturers agree, today’s homeowners spend far more time sourcing – or designing – their doors, particularly the front door. For new builds, it’s usually part of the architect’s plan, and is designed as part of the home’s overall appeal. Double volume? Classic? Rustic? Contemporary? Each home style demands a specific look to complement it. For a revamp, the installation of contemporary exterior doors can catapult a home into another era.

Jada says, “Pivot doors have become increasingly popular over the past few years – large, strong front doors constructed from sturdy wood.

They can also be highly decorative, with bold wood carvings on some of them, or stained glass on others. Many have intricate designs that are showstoppers as an entranceway.”

We use a variety of timbers, but for front doors we prefer to work with kiaat, meranti and marine ply as these are all durable and long lasting for our harsh South African climate, as well as being beautiful.”

Security is always an issue, whether it’s your front door or back. Today’s technologies allow doors to look good, while providing a fool-proof barrier. Whether it’s a sophisticated or slam-locking system, a second layer of security gate, or an impenetrable door – strong, metal doors are now popular as doors onto the road.

“There are many factors to bear in mind when choosing a front door, like security, house style, and local building regulations, which may affect the level of required maintenance. From a manufacturer’s point of view, we don’t recommend that wooden doors are exposed to full sun, especially in the Highveld where the climate is

De Villiers says, “Sliding folding doors and our frameless sliding folding doors have always been a top seller. We’ve mostly found that these doors are bought for renovation projects – people want to enclose their patios when the cold weather strikes in winter. Installing frameless sliding folding doors means you get to enjoy your patio all year round!”

Customise your doors

Customisation of doors is very popular – whether you’re designing your own or want one you’ve seen replicated. As De Villiers says, “People approach us with their own designs – we can custom make almost any design.” Painted doors, too, are sought-after – glossy or matt – whether they’re standard moulded doors or plain wood – trendy dark grey, black, or a bright, look-at-me colour, can look superb. Slatted wooden doors – either vertical or horizontally placed, with or without gaps, evenly spaced or not, same-size planks or not, are also firm favourites, particularly unvarnished and allowed to age naturally. Maintenance of woodwork is always a concern, so just as unvarnished or treated floor decking lasts well, so, too, doors in a wisely chosen wood. Choosing exterior doors now, is as much a creative process as your paint colour. And as much fun. The choices are endless.

ixed-use developments make sense for the developer, who can hedge their investment bets across a range of property types. But they also offer significant appeal to buyers, who can beat the traffic and keep their petrol prices down by staying within their precinct, which should – if it delivers on the mixed-use promise – fulfil all their “live, work, play” requirements. “These types of development are taking inspiration from international trends parallelling global demand for investment in locations where you can live, work and play,” says Nicholas Stopforth, managing director, Amdec Group, which is responsible for the award-winning Melrose Arch development in Joburg, and the stillunder-construction Harbour Arch in Cape Town. “We’re utilising space to its greatest capacity in major city centres and offering a safe, convenient urban living experience, but it also boasts fantastic real-estate returns.” Alex Oberholzer, Sandton area specialist, Knight Frank, says the popularity of mixed-use developments has been growing steadily in South Africa over the last five years. “Property developers are capatalising on this movement with new precincts popping up all over South Africa. Consumer convenience, new building technology and a ‘new population culture’ are major driving factors for

these developments,” he says. “Their popularity is greatly concentrated in the main business hubs in and around South Africa. It’s driven by the ‘live, work, play’ movement in the market where individuals want to live close to where they work with less travel time, and it also requires the need for the retail component to maximise efficiency and drive convenience.” He adds that there’s further appeal in the sustainability, security and efficiency of the overall design of these mixed-use spaces.

Joburg The Houghton The hotel component of this mixeduse apartment block in Houghton, Joburg will be completed shortly. “The Houghton will soon celebrate the much anticipated completion and launch of The Houghton Hotel, with the final phase of apartments also done. The hype around owning a property at The Houghton address has only increased enthusiasm among international investors, as well as local families seeking a secure, convenient, luxurious lifestyle with the amenities of a five-star hotel at their disposal,” says The Houghton director Arnold Forman.
