There’s a new gin distillery in Victoria Yards

rvin Smith and Tony Esslinger have been friends for over thirty years, and after working in the fields of law and entertainment respectively, they discovered a passion for distilling. Tony spent time in Provence, distilling terroir gins from wild “French fynbos”, while Irvin built a column still in his motherin-law’s kitchen to produce vodka.

Together, they found the perfect place to start their own distillery at urban regeneration project Victoria Yards. So they launched Primal Spirits Distillery in September, with
Currently they produce a Complex gin, featuring eighteen meticulously selected botanicals, which they describe as having “earthy roots base notes, fresh green herbal midrange, and a zesty sweet-sour citrus finish”. They also make a Union gin, named after the rare Rex Union orange, of which there are approximately only 300 trees in the world. They describe the fruit as being a mix of a pomelo and a bitter orange, and the flavour of the resulting gin is totally unique. But with so much local gin on the market, how will Primal distinguish themselves? They’re a “grain to glass” distillery meaning they make the neutral spirit from organic hard red wheat – and this forms the base of their gins, instead of buying it from industrial suppliers. They zest and dry the rare Rex Union oranges themselves, preserve kumquats at their freshest, and use two kinds of juniper. They dilute the mixture with bedrock water from an ancient source in the Magaliesberg.

Hello there, rattan
That woven craft of the 70s has reinvented itself in a fresh, sophisticated way – think Bali-esque pieces with Danish influences. The integration of rattan adds light and texture to an interior, and when teamed with black, for instance, is remarkably slick and modern. As a natural fibre, it ticks the sustainability box too.
Precision planting
Incorporating nature-inspired textures and shapes is still a big thing in office design but there’s a move away from a riot of greenery to a more grid-like approach. The trend is to introduce uniformity through modular styling to planters and layouts. Most importantly, biophilic designs are now considered early in the conceptual phase and are integrated in both indoor and outdoor structural schemes.

interiors of creative agencies, coworking spaces and tech companies, and works well as part of a print in a geometric or floral wallpaper.
Playful animalia
Designers are taking inspiration from fauna, which brings a lively, fun element into an office interior. Anything goes – from a side table with bird’s leg feet to wallpaper inspired by the pattern of the skin of a zebra. It can add a happy note of surprise or suggest a light-hearted sense of humour.
“We set out to be a truly artisanal distillery that makes innovative, bold spirits, with the emphasis on quality, above all. We love food, experimenting with local ingredients, finding new flavours, and distilling them into fine spirit,” says Tony.
Magnificent marble
This trend goes beyond counter tops to bespoke, one-off furniture pieces and the use of the marble texture as a print pattern in wall applications and soft furnishings. It can communicate luxury, elegance and grandeur but is equally comfortable in bold, modern, minimalist spaces.
Patterns and prints go illustrative
The whimsical, free-spirited trend is also reflecting in contemporary patterns and prints with a more illustrative style now turning heads in modern workspace interiors. There’s also an emphasis on patterning using hand-drawn techniques like lino- and lithography, giving a firm nod to organic textures and design.
“We love the tranquillity here and feel very much at home in this peaceful community of artists and artisans. Restored brick factory buildings and flourishing gardens make it an inspirational place,” comments Tony.

Creamy custard, flaky pastry, swirls of meltin-your-mouth icing – all without butter or cream? Absolutely, says chef Zondi Mthethwa, the cake connoisseur who is taking vegan patisserie to new heights. WORDS: LISA WITEPSKY

hef Zondi Mthethwa has been making cakes ever since he was old enough to mix sand and water together to create his first “batter”. “I was so proud of my mud cakes but, when I presented them to my mom and grandmother, they scolded me for ruining their Tupperware!” he recalls. All the same, it was from the family matriarchs that Zondi learned the alchemy of eggs, milk and sugar. “My mother used to take orders for scones and biscuits, and I would sit in the kitchen as she baked, munching on the dough.” Small wonder, then, that by Grade 10 there was no doubt in his mind that his future lay in the culinary arts. Zondi’s love for confectionary remains undiminished, years after his studies at the Capsicum Culinary Studio. This was followed by a stint at Four Seasons the Westcliff, an experience as a cake artist in Dubai, and a few years spent in the corporate world to hone his communication skills and gain a deeper understanding of how business works.

Newton Johnson Family Vineyards Pinot Noir
“My red wine for summer is definitely pinot noir, specifically from Newton Johnson Family Vineyards,” says Pete Goffe-Wood, “kitchen cowboy”, meataficionado and chef-patron of Viande at Grande Roche in Paarl. “It’s an elegant wine that can be served slightly chilled – perfect for sweltering days in Paarl. It’s the ideal accompaniment for a sauté of sweet breads, home-cured bacon, new season’s broad beans and mint.”
Haute Cabrière Pinot Noir Unwooded
Premium pinot can put a dent in your
weekly wine budget, but there’s also no shortage of options that are lighter in style, and easier on your wallet. This unwooded pinot noir (R95) from Franschhoek’s family-owned Haute Cabrière is a fine choice. It’s a wine best served chilled; the lively acidity and bright strawberry and cherry notes will still shine through. A great match for seared tuna, or a colourful caprese salad.
Tierhoek Grenache
Need a partner for that rack of lamb? Look no further than grenache. Known as garnacha in its native Spain, it’s also widely planted in southern France where it often forms the backbone of Rhônestyle blends. Tierhoek is a family-owned farm atop the Piekenierskloof Mountains on the doorstep of the Cederberg, and has played no small part in the growing
local interest in grenache. Made from 60-year-old vines, Tierhoek’s Grenache (R195) shows a captivating blend of savoury notes and spiciness, layered on top of ripe cherry and plum flavours. If you love your syrah, give grenache a whirl.
Carinus Family Vineyards Syrah
Then again, if it’s syrah you’re after try this elegant offering from Carinus Family Vineyards. Lukas van Loggerenberg makes the wine for grape-growers Danie and Hugo Carinus, and he’s crafted a delightfully drinkable drop from vineyards planted on the Polkadraai Hills. There’s typical syrah perfume, a bit of spice, and a fresh palate with wonderfully fine tannins. And, at 12.5% alcohol, it’s ideal for summer afternoons and a platter of charcuterie. It’s also great value at R145 a bottle.
There are still days when he craves vanilla sponge, topped with fresh buttercream – although his own delight in eating cake pales in comparison to the joy he experiences when a child smiles broadly at the sight of her party cake, or when a bride cries because he’s brought her vision to life. It is, he says, a gift to be able to bring happiness to others. That’s one of the reasons he opened the Plant Powered Patisserie with two partners last year. Inspired by a client who requested a vegan wedding cake to
experiment until the usual problems encountered by vegan chefs (like unstable batter) had been overcome, he wanted to show South Africans that free-from can be fabulous. Now, he’s ready to move on to the next big challenge – the establishment of his very own patisserie, Chef Zondi and Co, in February next year. The offering is, like Zondi himself, flexitarian, so that non-vegans can find plenty to break their diets, too. Think classic favourites like custard slices, donuts and tarts, as well as Zondi’s pet project, a dessert bar, where you can indulge in boozy puds like whisky crème brûlée and mojito cupcakes. “It’s the realisation of a dream I first had when I was five years old. Having my own patisserie feels like having it all” – or, dare we say, having his cake and eating it.

arkview is one of the oldest suburbs in Joburg, established more than a century ago, with much of its historic architecture still visible. This leafy neighbourhood populated mainly with large houses older than 60 years, makes the perfect platform for raising families and creating happy childhood memories.

Many of the big airy houses here have been renovated to retain older-world charm but to also reflect modern tastes, so if DIY and transformation is your cup of tea, Parkview may well offer you the project of a lifetime. The ideal person to talk to us about the merits of Parkview is Theresa Gibbon, herself a 20-year resident of the area and the marketing officer for the Parkview Residents’ Association. “When you buy in Parkview, you buy into a warm and friendly lifestyle, with a lot of support for residents. Join the Parkview Residents’ Association
(they have your interests at heart) and you will get access to the WhatsApp and Facebook channels that will ensure you quickly become part of the community. Here we discuss important topics that you may not be aware of – for example, as most of our homes are old, when you buy a house you need to go through the PRA and PHRAG to get approvals on any alterations and additions to your property.” Safety is often a concern in these well-to-do areas, and Theresa advises that new residents sign up with SafeParkview – the residentrun, proactive armed response security group in the area.
Schools
Theresa’s children went to Parkview Junior and Senior, Parkview PrePrimary, Parktown Boys and Hyde Park High, and were happy at their respective schools. The area is well known to house or to be close to some of the best public schools in Joburg. Other great schools nearby are Parktown High School for Girls, Greenside High, St Johns, The Ridge, St Katharine’s, Roedean and Kingsmead. From a convenience perspective, Parkview is well placed, with malls just a few kilometres from each other, friendly corner stores, parks for walking the dogs, and a quick – although sometimes rather congested – commute through to Sandton. There are great, specialised medical centres in and around the suburb, a golf course right on your doorstep and large enough living spaces to enjoy a uniquely South African outdoor lifestyle.

If leisurely walks with the dogs, kids or a buddy are some of your weekend pleasures, Parkview has options in spades. Quiet treelined streets as well as the golf club and parks allow for
wonderful rambles that Theresa makes plenty use of. “I spend hours walking along our green belts and through Parkview and the surrounding suburbs, including George Hay Park and Zoo Lake, which is also close to Emmarentia Dam. Residents can buy a walking membership for Parkview Golf Club too for a secure and lush walking experience.” If wine rates higher than walking on your Saturday agenda, you’re covered here too, with many restaurants, cafes, bistros and bars where you can unwind and connect with your friends and family. “The restaurants are fabulous – Perfect Cup, Trabella, My Bread & Butter, Croft & Co and Blind Tiger are some of my favourites,” Theresa says. If you’re an expectant mother, or planning to be one, you might like to pop into Genesis Maternity Clinic, a specialised mother-child care unit to assist and empower women through their pregnancies and their own specialised birth plans. Busy parents can tire out energetic kids at Go & Play in the Parkview Centre, a children’s activity club that entertains and stimulates little ones. Once an appetite has been worked up, Franco’s Pizzeria offers a warm and friendly environment for laid-back suppers for the youngest to the oldest family members. You won’t need to travel far to do grocery shopping, with all three main supermarket brands under one roof at the centre and any errands are sorted out through well-planned retailers here too – from a CellFix to forex outlets, car wash and vet shop. Parkview really does pose an attractive option for families. The organisation of the Residents’ Association, the open green spaces, shopping convenience and excellent schooling are all hard to ignore. Add to that the large, old and spacious houses, many primed for a fresh, personalised look, and Joburg residents have the foundations for a home where they can really put down roots.

I love the walkability of Parkview, the large trees, the beauty of the golf course, the friendly shopkeepers and their staff, the great government schools, a friendly library. You can walk down the street and greet 20 people by name!
