A
s the rows of red cannas start to appear alongside the road about 10km outside of Robertson, you know you’re in the Breede Valley – one of my favourite places in the world. Every year as my family and I make our annual trek to the Eastern Cape, we drive through the Robertson Wine Valley, past Jan Harmsgat Country House on the left of the R60, about two hours outside of Cape Town. And every year my husband and I say to each other that we really ought to stop there for a coffee and see what the place is all about – and then we promise that we’ll do it next time. It took us a few years to make good on that promise, but three weeks ago, we finally did. Why our fascination with Jan Harmsgat, you might ask? There are, after all, a slew of quaint B&Bs and cottages on the popular Route 62. Maybe it’s the estate’s enviable location deep in the valley amid lush pecan nut trees under which you can throw a blanket, enjoy a picnic and take in the breathtaking surrounds. Or maybe it’s the lure of the onsite restaurant – open to the public – that serves hearty South African boerekos. Or the fact that the estate is home to one of the largest pomegranate plantations in Africa, producing delicious juice and pomegranateinfused honey. Or the fairly recently introduced single vineyard wines made with grapes from the estate by award-wining Arendsig winemaker Lourens van der Westhuizen. Or, maybe, it’s all of the above.
helping wine brands grow their business and is now hoping to do the same with the Jan Harmsgat wines. He’s a busy man and often not on the farm, but if he’s around when you happen to be staying over, you’re in luck, because not only is he an amiable dinner companion with a wealth of knowledge of the area, wine, and pomegranates, he’s also the person who takes you on the 4x4 wine safari. Which is exactly what we go do after a delicious lunch of hake and chips and a fig, blue cheese, and biltong salad, washed down with the JHG Sauvignon Blanc – which complements the dishes perfectly. The weather is starting to turn, threatening rain, so we bundle up underneath blankets, Mitch pours us each a glass of JHG Cabernet Sauvignon, and we head off in the 4x4. We drive through the vineyards and pomegranate plantations – as far as the eye can see there are ginormous red fruit dangling from trees. What do they do with all of it? I ask. Export, mainly, then used for juice, then honey (the beehives are put among the plantations for maximum effect). The rest fall off and return from whence it came. It’s a quite a pity, I observe, because they could really do something with the remaining fruit. Like pomegranate-picking festivals. Or making pomegranate jam. (Watch this space – maybe in the near future both of these will become reality.)
As we arrive, we’re greeted by Francois Prins Manning, the general manager. He takes us for a quick tour of the estate and explains a bit more about its history. The 680ha farm was established in 1723 and the original thatched-roof buildings are still intact – and used as the accommodation quarters and restaurant. The 10 rooms – double, twin and family as well as a penthouse honeymoon suite – are all elegantly appointed, with everything you might need for a relaxing stay. (I was even allowed a soak in the tub after we checked in – the aromatic peppermint-infused bath salts a treat for this bath-starved Capetonian.)
We drive up and up and up the hill, towards the lookout spot. On a clear day you have a 360-degree view of the valley below you. But by now the rain is pouring and we’re soaking wet, wine splashing around the glasses as we bundu-bash over the rocky terrain. It’s such fun it doesn’t even matter that we didn’t get to see the spectacular view.
Francois then takes us to meet Mitch Boy, the wine portfolio manager. Mitch has more than a decade’s experience

and the pinotage. Both are big and bold; special-occasion wines. Food wines. And with only approximately 5,000 bottles of each produced per year respectively, you can understand the rather hefty price tag. (If you’re in the mood for more easy-drinking, at R85 per bottle the sauvignon blanc is a steal.) The chardonnay complements the springbok carpaccio perfectly, lifting the gamey flavour and emphasising the slight hint of spice in the meat. I try each of the reds with the slow-braised lamb shank, and while they each bring something different to the table, it’s the pinotage that stands out. Dessert is a pecan nut pie – made with nuts from the farm, of course – and ice cream. The perfect end to a perfect meal. As my husband and I sink into the comfy king-sized bed back in our room, the rain pattering gently against the window, we promise ourselves that next time we drive through the Breede Valley, we’ll stop at Jan Harmsgat. And this time it’s a promise we’re going to keep sooner rather than later.
Back at the estate and in dry clothes, it’s time for dinner. But first a wine tasting. Mitch and the winemaker stick to the well-known varietals: sauvignon blanc, chenin blanc, chardonnay, pinotage, shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. The chenin, unfortunately for us, is sold out.

loom Coffee is the latest “third space” to pop up on Parkhurst’s 4th Avenue – that space between your home and your office that’s perfect for enjoying good coffee while working on your laptop, holding business meetings – there’s a separate boardroom you can book by the hour – or having breakfast or lunch with friends during the work day. But Bloom is much more than just the latest hip coffee spot to hit the Parkhurst strip. Here, owner Alan Gibson explains how the shop is also an entrepreneurial incubator, where employees are being trained to be future Bloom Coffee shop owners as the brand expands into new locations.

While Gauteng may not have the wine estates of the Cape, a bespoke wine-andchocolate experience is easy to come by thanks to Great Wines. With his years in the hotel and wine industries to draw on, owner Leslie Berman offers tutored pairings for private groups in and around Gauteng. The tasting pairs seven different cultivars with handmade chocolates from both South Africa and abroad. Ever wondered how rosé will pair with Turkish delight? Here’s your chance to find out. Creation Wines in the Hemel-en-Aarde valley certainly did their research in creating their “Paradoxical Wine and Chocolate Pairing”, sourcing bespoke chocolates infused with flavour profiles to complement their wines. “We have two white chocolates, tempered and flavoured to fit the profile of the Creation viognier and pinot
respectively, then a milk chocolate for the syrah and a dark chocolate for the merlot,” explains Creation co-owner Carolyn Martin. “Each has also been chosen for its weight and tannin structure to pair with the wines.” Waterford Estate in Stellenbosch also uses bespoke chocolates in their pairing, here crafted by Greyton chocolatier Richard von Geusau. Well-trained tasting room attendants are on hand to lead guests through the trio of pairings created by Von Geusau and Waterford’s cellar master Kevin Arnold. Look forward to the Kevin Arnold Shiraz with a masala chai dark chocolate, the Waterford Estate Cabernet Sauvignon with rock salt dark chocolate and the Heatherleigh Noble Late Harvest paired with rose geranium milk chocolate. Up at Constantia Glen, Justin van Wyk crafts a superb range of Bordeaux-style wines, of which three reds are offered in the estate’s chocolate pairings. Unlike most estates the wines here are all paired with dark chocolate, from a milder 60% chocolate with the fruitforward Constantia Saddle red blend, to an 80% dark chocolate with the flagship Bordeaux blend, Constantia Glen FIVE.
Q: Tell us about Bloom’s entrepreneurship angle? A: Bloom is the latest venture from our company, Oko Vusa, whose goal it is to enable entrepreneurship in South Africa. We take small businesses and we help them to become more profitable by looking at things like sales, marketing, strategy, finance and personal development. With Bloom, we’re teaching our employees what it means to run a business, with the ultimate goal of them opening up their own premises. So, once they’re ready to graduate from here, we find a space for them and help them set it up, and they then own it outright. Q: How did the idea for Bloom come about? A: We get startup funds from corporates who want to do enterprise development, and one of our clients liked the work we were
doing for other companies. They wanted us to take their funds and use it in the public space to make a sustainable venture in its own right. From my perspective, I’m not chasing money – I’m chasing opportunity and sustainability. Q: What gap are you filling in the enterprise development space? A: A coffee machine like the one we have in our store costs R200,000. How do we expect a newly trained barista to have the money to buy a machine like this and start his own coffee shop? I think that’s the lesson: We have all these wonderful skills development programmes available for people – like barista training – but after they’ve been trained, there’s no real way for them to progress, besides working as an employee in a coffee shop owned by someone else. Q: Where do you source your coffee? A: We’ve partnered with Father Coffee, and they’ve been amazing. They love coffee – it’s their thing – and I needed a partner who knew their stuff and who could plug in and make it work from the start. They also trained all our staff, so the product is consistently of a high quality, independent from our entrepreneurship goals. Q: How has the team worked together so far? A: Everyone has bought into the concept, so the camaraderie is unbelievable. Everyone is performing at the highest level; they’re not just going in to get their tips and wages everyday. There’s a bigger picture behind it.

round 11 years ago when operations director and creative Hazel Jarman chose to move to Edenvale, it was a young, up-and-coming community. Now it’s an established neighbourhood – great for families but also for couples and singles who want the space of a big suburb but with the convenience of a central location. Hazel works unpredictable hours in her industry, but when she’s home she enjoys the space she has to create her art and spends the weekends outdoors, entertaining and visiting markets and restaurants. “The thing I enjoy most about Edenvale is the peaceful and friendly community we have here,” says Hazel, who also implies community security is a top priority. “The police have a zerotolerance policy, which is good for everyone, and apart from the spruit which can flood sometimes in heavy rain, it’s a tranquil place to live.”

While there are apartments of varying sizes to rent for single professionals and new young couples, Edenvale is the ideal property hunting ground for first-time homebuyers. Among the free-standing houses available which boast gardens, garages and spacious rooms, the real attraction in Edenvale is the secure complex townhouses on offer. These homes are largely new, neat and easy to maintain, with enough space for a little one but manageable enough to lock up and go. Another great option for those looking to slow down are the retirement homes and duplexes which abound. In this friendly neighbourhood, families dominate, which makes for pretty and accessible living spaces which deliver great bang for buck.
Schools
Given Hazel’s quote about the convenient location, many popular private schools in Joburg are situated around 13km away, in suburbs like Houghton, Bryanston and Rosebank. But if it’s round the corner you’re looking for, the following institutions are a stone’s throw from central Edenvale: The Holy Rosary School for Girls is a Catholic private school for both preprimary and high school students – and it’s not mandatory
to be a practicing Catholic to apply. For the boys, there’s the option of St Benedict’s in Bedfordview a mere 5km away which also cater to the child’s full school career. More recently founded schools include Curro Edenvale for both genders from Grade R to Grade 8, and the school promises more advanced years to be phased in shortly. School of Merit – an independent, private entity – provides a solutionfocussed philosophy for its learners, which is defined as an ethos that helps children define their futures by building on their strengths positively. Whichever stream interests you, there are plenty of options to please most parents.

and there’s plenty of accommodation nearby to sleep family and friends. Markets are fairly abundant in Edenvale and its surrounds. Sylvia’s Market offers fresh produce and preserves, cheeses and olives and lots of craft stores – perfect for Christmas shopping. It’s also an open market to which traders can apply, so that candle-making or cake-decorating hobby you have could turn into a lucrative side hustle. The Bedfordview Night Market is great fun for kids with entertainment and competitions and a good time for parents as well, providing wine and cocktails, eclectic crafts and live music. On the topic of a great drink, you can also pop into Oakes Brew House for a delicious craft beer and a bite in Modderfontein. Not only is the product fantastic, the entire show is run by three women – from owners to brewmaster.
Since the ’Vale is full of growing families and those who love a little space, there are many activities, markets, attractions and malls to entertain little ones right through to grannies.
The whole family will be charmed by Gilooly’s Farm – a peaceful break from the working week. Set on a 44ha piece of land, the farm offers incredible bird-watching, lovely picnicking and refreshing walking trails.
Glendower Golf Club is referred to as “the classic golf experience” and offers a challenging course in gorgeous surrounds. If you’re planning a big celebration, the club will also allow for room hire and events catering

Second time around If you’re considering buying a second home – whether it’s for holidays, letting out as an income stream, or as a pure investment – it makes good sense to do your homework with regard to costs sooner rather than later WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER IMAGES: SHUTTERSTOCK

ou know why you’re buying a second property, but it’s as important to quiz yourself about the finer details as it is about any small print. Your costs in terms of raising and registering a bond, transfer costs, and agents commission is going to be precisely the same as when you bought your primary property. But unlike your primary property purchase, there are other considerations. According to Hayden Giger, channel management head, FNB Private Bank lending, financial implications of buying a second home can be broken down into two types of cost: contractual and variable. “Contractual will be the monthly bond payment (if financed), rates, taxes, levies (if sectional title), water, and lights. Other costs will be normal maintenance and security costs, as you would incur on your primary residence.” Giger suggests a few points which homeowners about to make that second purchase, need to take into consideration: You need to consider where you want to buy and what type of property, in other words, freehold or sectional title. That’s an extremely important consideration, as it will have an impact on your monthly contractual and variable costs. The proximity to your primary residence also has an impact on your financial obligation, especially if it’s a rental property – for example, will you be able to manage it, or will you place its management in the hands of agents? What do you want to do with the property, that is, holiday home for your own exclusive use, or rental property? Then consideration needs to be whether it’s a long-term rental or short-term like an AirBnB. With each choice a different set of considerations would need to be taken into account. You need to look at the purchase as an investment,

and decide if the investment is to be weighted to capital gain over time, or an annual yield via rental. Taking all the above into account, advice should be sought as to the type of ownership vehicle in which the property should be bought. Should it be in your personal name, in a trust, or another vehicle? Numerous factors impact on that.

Capital gains tax (CGT)
David Campbell, Meumann White Attorneys, says, “In terms of section 26A of the Income Tax Act, the taxable capital gain of a person in a year of assessment is included in his taxable income and is therefore subject to normal tax. “CGT applies to individuals, trusts and companies, and both South African residents and non-residents are subject to it. If the disposal or deemed disposal of an asset (for example, sale of a property) took place during the year of assessment, the capital gain or loss should be calculated as: proceeds less base cost equals capital gain/loss.” In the case of a natural person or special trust, the first R2m of the gain on the sale of a primary residence is exempt from CGT. Not so, a second property. “If a person has a net capital gain, it must then be multiplied by the inclusion rate applicable to the said person, and the result is then included in the normal taxable income. As an individual, the capital gains tax rate is 40%, and the effective maximum rates of tax payable on capital gains (2018/19 tax year), is 18%. The annual exclusion for an individual, is R40,000,” Campbell explains. “Remember, the taxpayer bears the onus of establishing the base cost of the asset. If unable to do this, the base cost will be deemed to be R0 (or as much as can be established). It’s therefore essential that the taxpayer retains all documentation that verifies expenditure incurred by him,” Campbell says.
