ven if you’re a seasoned Joburg local, you may not know that the small area sandwiched between Melville and Auckland Park is officially named Richmond. The small web of streets contains media houses, office blocks, the Lancet Laboratories complex and residential apartments. It’s also a popular route for commuters on their way to the city centre and students on their way to campus.

With this in mind, photojournalist Antoine de Ras, a former long-term Richmond resident, had the idea to convert his photographic studio below his Menton Street apartment into a neighbourhood coffee/breakfast/
lunch spot catering to the local community and passing commuters. The result was The Richmond Studio Cafe, which he opened last November with his partner, former Sunday Independent journalist Mantombi Makhubele. With its mid-century furniture, wood accents and metal detailing, the interior has a unique retro-industrial feel, and is peppered with Antoine’s photographic paraphernalia in the background, from vintage cameras and flashbulbs that are part of his private collection, to his prints on the wall and old photographic slides that form a large light mosaic on the metal bathroom door.

n Bandage the knife not the wound, artists Broomberg and Chanarin reflect on their precarious sense of place and belonging to their homeland (South Africa), to photography and to each other by turning to the handful of images that remain meaningful to them.
“My original focus was on offering great coffee,” says Antoine, and he’s put a lot of effort into being able to say he serves some of the best coffee in the area. He’s done this through a combination of knowledgeable baristas, quality equipment and a good supplier: Origin Coffee Roasting. For food, there’s a range of solid breakfast options, a variety of melts (with vegan and vegetarian options available) as well as burgers, ribs and chicken wings. “We use quality local suppliers wherever possible,” says Antoine. Suppliers include The Baker Brothers at 27 Boxes, which supplies him with a non-GMO sourdough bread, which contains no additives or preservatives. While the restaurant is currently open for breakfast and lunch only, Antoine’s future plans include introducing a range of craft beers, with a view of turning the space into a part-time bar on some evenings. He’s also planning on hosting workshops and showcasing the work of local photographers, which is ideal given the space’s existing setup in terms of backdrop, layout and lighting. The Richmond Studio Cafe is already available for private evening events such as launches and parties.

or the last five years, the Winter Sculpture Fair has become an undeniable highlight in the Joburg arts calendar. This year, the fair arrives with a new name, and backed by a new sponsor, American Express, and long-time organiser, Artlogic, the 2018 American Express Winter Sculpture Fair is set to be bigger than ever.

If you haven’t had the pleasure of attending the fair before, it’s the kind of event that you’ll get excited for year after year once you’ve experienced it. Dubbed an “enchanting sensory journey”, the fair is all about creating the perfect day trip where entire families can enjoy food, drinks and art in a spectacular setting. Taking place over two days, the fair will be hosted at the Nirox Foundation Sculpture Park in The Cradle of Humankind, which makes it easy to access from Joburg, while also allowing visitors to feel like they’ve left the city to go on a real adventure. While many Joburg art galleries might provide access to beautifully sculpted works of art, the fair is unique in that it creates access to local and international sculptures that wouldn’t otherwise be available to the public.
Visitors will also be able to see works by acclaimed Ndebele artist Esther Mahlangu. Aided by the sheer size of its venue, the seasonally curated larger-than-life sculptures that are dotted across the landscape make for the kind of experience that calls to mind fairy tales and foreign lands. While there’s no doubt that the sculptures are the main event, the fair has also become well known for its impressive food and drinks offering. In partnership with Franschhoek Tourism, Artlogic brings in the best food and wine from the Franschhoek Valley each year, ensuring that there’s something delicious to sip or nibble on while you take in the beauty of the surroundings. Following the theme “Not a single story”, inspired by the quote from Nigerian writer Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, “The danger of a single story. Our lives, our cultures, are composed of many overlapping stories,” this year’s fair is one event that you won’t want to miss. Q: How did your business start? A: A s creative serial entrepreneurs, we are always on the lookout for the next best thing that will deliver great value, fun and profit. Dylan stumbled across EverBlock online and we made contact with the US parent company, teamed up and began importing quite quickly. EverBlock are giant “Lego type” building blocks that can be used to create furniture, walls and room dividers. They have become popular with individuals who buy/rent them to build desks or TV units, and with corporate clients who use them at events to create walls, work stations, bars and wall dividers. Q: Why did you choose this area? A: It found us. Dylan is a family man and lives nearby and Matt is an events specialist with an active social life. Parktown North was an instant fit as we were both looking to have more fun in our creative workspace.

Hout Bay thrives
T
hrive Hout Bay is a local green advocate and nonprofit organisation which launched its “For the Good of our Hood” campaign in November 2017. Aligning local establishments with environmental sustainability, the campaign awards restaurants according to a green rating system, with three stars being the top accreditation a venue can receive. Recycling waste, composting food waste and buying locally or growing your own fresh produce are among the criteria to qualify. Bay Harbour Market was one of the first destinations in the area to receive a three-star accreditation.
“We’re very proud of our local community. Just a few months after the launch, 31 of the 65 restaurants in Hout Bay have already received accreditation,” says Thrive’s Nontsikelelo Martel, “and some restaurants have even gone beyond the call by introducing water-saving measures as well.” Thrive mentors continue to visit the local Hout Bay restaurants and educate entrepreneurs on going green and recycling. In the coming months, they will be launching their map of all the awarded restaurants in Hout Bay, which will be shared with tourism boards and will also be made available electronically via the Thrive website and social media platforms.

ecently in London, an artwork relegated to the owners’ spare room was auctioned for a few hundred thousand pounds. The owners had stashed it away and had no idea of its true value. So where do you begin finding out whether artwork in your home is worth anything?

Given the cut in the repo rate by the South African Reserve Bank, the property market can expect a very healthy surge. KZN residential market on the up
T
he KwaZulu-Natal residential market looks set to be the most vibrant in the country this year in terms of house price growth and return on investment, says Craig Hutchison, CEO, Engel & Völkers Southern Africa. “The North Coast of KwaZulu-Natal is the new Cape Town when it comes to property. It’s about a preferred location because of the many opportunities for business and local economic growth.” Engel & Völkers has sold the KwaZuluNatal Dolphin Coast licence to
Karien and Stephen Hunter – an area stretching from the Umhlanga River to Zinkwazi, north of Ballito. The Hunters run KwaZulu-Natal law firm AMC Hunter Inc, which specialises in property and commercial law. Karien will be involved in training and developing her own area partners on the Dolphin Coast. The licence area suburbs include Umdloti Beach, La Mercy, Zimbali, Ballito, Beverley Hills Estate, Salt Rock and Mount Moreland.
Alistair Meredith, an art specialist at Strauss & Co Fine Art Auctioneers and Consultants, is well aware of the public’s intimidation around art. “We work hard to dispel that,” he says. “The auction world is totally transparent and not an intimidating space at all.” He says what people see in the movies – large, silent New York galleries with intimidating staff – has created a daunting image of exclusivity. “We run live and online art auctions, have road shows where the public can bring artworks to be valued, and we respond happily to emails requesting valuations or opinions; just provide us with a photograph of the artwork, its dimensions and the
artist’s name. Sometimes it’s near impossible to value – say, an 18th century artwork with no signature.” How do they arrive at the valuation? “We rely entirely on auction precedents and are very objective and market-related; we try to find similar work sold on auction (in terms of the artist, size, medium and condition) and those results determine broad objective guideline figures for that particular work.”
How does an art auction work?
An art auction is a simple, transparent process. “Each piece has a clearly stated guideline price. You choose how high you want to bid. If you win the auction, you pay the hammer price (and a stated premium) and it’s yours. What the work sells for is up to the market (everybody in the auction room or online). It’s very down to earth,” he says. Alistair says it’s a myth that you could inadvertently bid on an item by unconsciously scratching your nose during an auction. “You have to register before you bid, and you’ll be given a bidding paddle. When you bid, the auctioneer will ask you if you intended to do so.”

Alistair says, “The South African art market has exploded over the last decade. There’s been huge interest in local art from South Africans, expats and, increasingly, the international market. We’re always a little hesitant about speaking about art as a pure investment because nobody has a crystal ball, but the more research you do, the better idea you have of an artist’s trajectory. Read up and speak to dealers, art galleries, auction house specialists, but buy art you love and enjoy it every day on your wall as it appreciates.”

leni Catacousinos owns a training company and lives in the Sandton CBD with her partner and two daughters. They live in a Georgian-style complex down a surprisingly suburban street opposite the Gautrain station. They moved in 10 years ago, after having walked past the complex often on their regular strolls around the neighbourhood. “We loved the architecture; it’s white and clean-looking, and at that stage, it was in a very quiet cul-de-sac. So when one came up for sale, I jumped at it,” she says. Their unit is spread out over three floors, with lots of steps to walk up and down as well as four bedrooms and four bathrooms. Eleni and her partner initially thought it was too big for them, so they let it out for a while and rented a smaller place in the complex.
Everything you could possibly need – shops, restaurants, cinemas, bars, theatre, gym, a park, even a hospital – is within walking distance. With the Gautrain up the road for airport trips and Uber two minutes away, you really don’t need a car. ELENI CATACOUSINOS, RESIDENT
Shortly after setting up this arrangement, Eleni received a call from an adoption agency saying that their application had been approved and there was a baby that her and her husband could meet. After that year, with a new baby, they moved back into their unit and a few years later, a little sister joined their growing family. Eleni now works out of the fourth bedroom, which she describes as an office-cum-Lego room, and she says that walking up and down all those stairs keeps her fit.
Schooling There are no schools in the Sandton CBD itself, but the surrounding areas are full of excellent private and public schools. “There are Montrose Primary and Pre-Primary schools, which are good public schools in Morningside,” says Eleni. She also mentions Redhill School and the French international school, Lycée Jules Verne, as good academic institutions for CBD residents. Crawford College and St David’s Marist Inanda are close by, as are public schools Sandown High, Grayston Preparatory and Hyde Park High. Eleni has some commuting advice for parents considering moving into the Sandton CBD: “You’re a bit confined from about 4pm onwards. It gets difficult to leave the area, so you have to time activities like ballet and horse riding so you don’t get stuck in there.”
Explore Sandton City is practically on Eleni’s doorstep and she enjoys being able to walk up to the centre. “We usually go to Pappas on the Square with the kids, because they’re reasonably tolerant, even though it’s not actually a children’s restaurant.” She says they generally travel out of their area to find child-friendly restaurants, like Bambanani in Melville. “We also go to Mushroom Farm Park. It’s just across the road, so we can walk there, which is lovely,

and we sometimes go to the Inanda Club just up the road, because my children used to ride there. Watching the polo on a Sunday is great.” If she and her husband are heading out without their children, they generally to go Hyde Park Corner, where their favourite restaurants are the EB Social Kitchen & Bar and Tashas. She says that while she finds Sandton City a bit too big for easy shopping, she goes to the Woolworths there because she can park right outside. She enjoys living in the heart of Sandton’s CBD – “Africa’s richest square mile” – but she adds that the extensive construction in the area makes it a bit tricky to live there at the moment.
