resident Cyril Ramaphosa delivered his third State of the Nation Address (Sona) in Cape Town on the 20th. The Sona outlined South Africa’s general political, socioeconomic and other areas critical to the well-being of the nation. Mike Greeff, CEO, Greeff Christie’s International Real Estate, says the President spoke strongly to the message of growth and development of the country, but was also realistic with regard to the challenges facing the nation. He comments, “The speech resonated with all walks of life from all corners of the country that are struggling to thrive due to the slow rate of job creation. The creation of jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities will allow more young people access to the economy and therefore become contributing members of society. “The Presidency assured the country that the focus of government would be growth and renewal as well as the realisation of the National Development Plan that was adopted in 2012. Government has reassured the nation that the time for talk is over and actions need to take place,” he says. “There will be hard choices facing the country, but as a nation we need to be committed to focussing our efforts on actions that have the greatest impact on the country. Economic transformation and job creation is a key focus of the administration and that will only have a positive effect on the economy.

The land being targeted is available public land and not private residential property. “The City of Cape Town can expect further growth as building plans worth R20bn for development have been approved. This is expected to bode extremely well for the property market as more and more people are expected to relocate here in search of increased opportunity. “I echo the President’s sentiments that by working together there’s nothing we cannot be, nothing we cannot do, and nothing we cannot achieve,” Greeff concludes.

here’s a time for wines casually quaffed by the braai, and there’s a time for serious wines that demand your attention. The Old Road Wine Co., which launched earlier this year from its tasting room home in Franschhoek, aims to cater to both ends of the spectrum. Winemaker Ryan Puttick is at the helm in the cellar, tapping into unique vineyard sites from across the Cape winelands. It’s this wandering eye that offers plenty of curiosity in the portfolio, with the wines split across five distinct categories that tap into the characters and tales of the 19th-century winelands to offer an eye-catching collection of wines. The Quirky Ones runs from the zippy Juliette Sauvignon Blanc to the hugely enjoyable Spotted Hound; a red blend with nips of sangiovese, shiraz, cinsaut and more. The standout here though is the Cape blend dubbed The Butcher and Cleaver, a trio of shiraz, pinotage and mourvèdre that’s a fine accompaniment for anything off the braai.

the French Corner, with a pair of approachable blends to discover. The red is inspired by the Rhône valley, driven by grenache and gourvèdre, so expect plenty of bold fruit with an undercurrent of savoury notes. The white is a delicious, slightly unusual, blend of verdelho, marsanne and grenache blanc. While you’ll find the range of wines in good wine shops and online, perhaps the best place to discover them is at the source, in the Old Road Wine Co. tasting room in Franschhoek. The Anemos Deck and main restaurant offer wonderful valley views, with dishes under the watchful eye of chef Reimond van der Walt. There’s an extensive menu that rambles from pizza to pasta to hearty grills. As with the wines, you’ll be spoilt for choice.

The Originals pays tribute to the characters of yesteryear Franschhoek in the Smous Sauvignon Blanc and The Fat Man Pinotage, while the Single Vineyard releases are well worth seeking out, particularly the grand-mère semillon, with fruit picked from a special bush vine vineyard planted in 1936. M

eaning “you snooze, you lose” in Zulu, Walala Wasala is a once-off market created by the team behind Market on Main and Love Jozi. This makers-and-bakers day will be happening on Saturday, 6 July at 27 Boxes in Melville and is set to be a treat for the whole family. Bradley Kirshenbaum from Love Jozi says they were approached by 27 Boxes to do an activation for the centre and realised that the shipping container development was the ideal place for a Saturday market. Walala Wasala is all about appreciating where things come from, and the passionate people who made them. Bradley says South African consumers are definitely growing more aware of the origin of the items they consume. “Buying produce at markets gives people the opportunity to ask

the makers directly about where and how things were produced,” he says. Pick up your week’s groceries including some artisanal bread from Lucky Bread, some craft cheese, fresh produce and other baked goods. Sip on a warming winter cocktail and savour authentic dumplings and springrolls from Li Kitchen − a Market on Main institution since 2011. Choose from rails of specially selected vintage clothing and quirky gifts, including Swa Misava Naturals, a natural personal care company best known as the Beer Soap Sisters. They use edible ingredients in all their products and are also the innovators of Umqombothi Soap. And what about the kids? 27 Boxes has a great contemporary designed playground for them to spend time in, and there’ll also be airbrush tattoos, a balloon artist and face painting. End off your market visit with a scoop or two of “spirited ice cream” from a company called Moonshine, who handcrafts premium boozy ice creams with delicious natural flavours (not for kids!). Delicious.

iven Monaise is obsessed with cars. She dreams of one day standing beside the track in Kyalami, and even as a child was captivated by the idea of building an engine. It’s ironic, then, that she’s made a name for herself in the fashion industry, designing luxury leather accessories. Given herself is blind to the irony; she only sees synchronicity. “My career started in mechanical engineering because that gave me a closeness to cars and, although I’ve left the field, I still apply a lot of what I learned in designing, planning and working with machines. Leather design is all about precision; it’s not like sewing, where you can go back and unpick the fabric to correct a mistake. And my engineering background has helped here, too.” But how does someone go from descending mine shafts to crafting handbags? By way of a side hustle, says Given. “I was always in love with business because my mother owned her own spaza shop, and I would help her with stocktaking and other processes that taught me the basics of business. At the same time, I helped my dad selling leather belts and shoes.” Given’s first clientele for the belts and shoes were her friends and colleagues. Later, she added clothing to her range, and it was on a buying trip to Turkey that she fell in love with leather. “I love its durability, the fact that it becomes more beautiful with wear,” she says. She took two weeks’ leave to complete an intensive course at the South African Leather Academy in Cape Town,

producing five leather items and honing her knowledge of tanning processes, different types of leather, and stitching techniques. And then, in 2014, she quit her job to start up Kono Authentic, her own range of leather goods. Although Given developed a loyal clientele at monthly markets, her lack of business acumen proved a major stumbling block and so, one year later, she decided to put the enterprise on hold. She used the time to boost her entrepreneurial grounding, brushing up on skills like marketing and finance through her participation in incubator initiatives like the SAB Foundation Tholoana Programme, and relaunched in 2016. Given’s progress is marked not only by the several awards accrued during the past three years – she was, for instance, named one of the SAB Foundation’s Top 50 Entrepreneurs – but also by her appearance at leading design shows like Kamers Vol Geskenke and her burgeoning e-commerce site. Going forward, the entrepreneur says she’s looking to establish more relationships with buyers, by taking part in events like SA Fashion Week’s Trade Show, and is working to grow the brand through channels such as social media. “Leather is timeless. It’s a joy to work with, because no two pieces of leather are the same, so every item you make is a test of your creativity. And the uniqueness that results is just one of the reasons it’s a joy to wear,” Given concludes.

peak to any kitchen and bathroom designer like Umhlanga’s Morley Miller, and they’ll come up with a host of stylish storage concepts. “Storage for kitchens and bathrooms is coming of age. Superb quality products in contemporary colours and materials specifically to fit into or onto existing cupboards or units, not only look good, but function brilliantly. Larson Industries produce some really stylish storage options,” Natasha Miller of Morley Miller says.

Storage as decor

For smaller spaces, keep storage off the floor and ideally use the items to be stored as an integral part of the decor. So, if it’s beautiful waffle-weave grey towels, fold or roll them into boxed, cubed or floating shelves – even tubes – or fit them into baskets on those shelves. The towel colours, the type and colour of the wood or melamine, all talk to the look and feel. Nothing is accidental. Tinks Robinson of Peppergreen Interiors says, “Wooden shelving in various forms is big – floating, hanging, or shelves with attractive forged brackets with rail and hooks beneath.” A bedroom headboard is a wonderful multipurpose storage unit-cum-side table. Designed around your bed size and bedroom look, custom design it as a wall fixture. Whether you choose a rustic untreated wood unit, or matt or glossy spray-painted surfaces, the unit can combine cubed cupboards with open cubes and shelving, mood lighting and reading lights. A large, slim, plain box in a colour/woodgrain as a headboard, can be very effective, but with side access which includes deep narrow shelves – open or with doors.

Multifunctional furniture Today, there’s a wide range of beds

with superb storage facilities in a range of permutations. You might like the entire mattress section to lift from the empty base or platform – near invisible – or rather include feature shelving and cupboards. It’s ideal for linen and scatter cushions. For kids’ rooms, cubes and baskets are perfect for holding toys. Units on castors make for easy manoeuvrability, whether under a bed or as an ottoman. Upholstered ottomans and cubes have long been storage vehicles; so too, says Robinson, “built-in window seats, with hinged seats that open”. If you prefer, day beds or window seats can rather have open or cubed shelving.

Hidden storage

For those tight on space, Robinson suggests raising the floor, so it’s essentially a low wooden platform with a useful gap beneath. “Flat baskets on castors as well as suitcases can be stored in there, while removable front panels disguise the fact that there’s storage space.” Robinson also suggests converting stairs. “Install drawers where the riser panel is, or the riser panel could be made into a door, allowing space beneath the tread open for storage. Also, utilise your ceiling space by installing a tucked-away ladder or quality pull-stairs – it’s ideal for little used items or any bulk household purchases.”

Quirky or repurposed storage

Spray paint old steamer trunks, a vintage fridge shell or industrial lockers; mount old metal wire baskets or trays on the wall. It’s wonderful to have an element of quirkiness, even in the most traditional of decor spaces.
