T

he Eastern Cape is soughtafter among international visitors for its many exceptional private game reserves. A big plus for this area, apart from its spectacular Big Five wildlife offerings, is that it’s entirely malaria free. Here’s our pick of 11 private game reserves which locals should not miss out on either, as they are all within doable distance of the Bay.

Need to know: Large grassland areas mean a remarkable density of free-roaming lions can be sustained.

Shamwari Private Game Reserve

Pumba Private Game Reserve

Claim to fame: Iconic Shamwari near Alicedale is internationally renowned and unique in that it was a pioneer in the Eastern Cape for the establishment of world-class private reserves. Expect to see: Spotting the Big Five, along with a multitude of other animals, is virtually a given. In addition, more than 275 different bird species have been seen.

KARIEGA GAME RESERVE

Need to know: In partnership with its famous Born Free Foundation, Shamwari has two centres worth visiting – the Julie Ward Centre for rescued big cats, and the Jean Byrd Centre and Sanctuary with educational facilities for schools and additional enclosures for rescued cats. Accommodation: Sindile (luxury free-standing tents), Eagles Crag (nine suites overlooking lush vegetation and rocky cliffs), Bayethe (tented lodge), Long Lee Manor (the original Edwardian manor house), Riverdene (perfect for families), Lobengula (resembling a traditional African kraal), and Sarili (fully run on eco-principles). Shamwari also operates a tented Explorer wilderness bush camp from October to May.

Lalibela Game Reserve and Safari Lodge

Claim to fame: An hour from Port Elizabeth and Addo, Lalibela has no public roads running through the property, so only Lalibela guests have access to the wildlife area and you won’t encounter the public while on safari. Expect to see: Lalibela has the Big Five as well as predators like cheetah, hyena, jackal and lynx. The reserve has large plains that are home to zebra, giraffe, warthog, impala, wildebeest, blesbuck and other antelopes.

Kariega Game Reserve

Claim to fame: Kariega is 10 minutes from Kenton-on-Sea and unusual in that two rivers – the Kariega and Bushmans – run through it. Expect to see: The Big Five and a multitude of other wildlife and birds. Need to know: Kariega was founded by the Rushmere family who, over 30 years, have dedicated themselves to transforming what was once largely farmland into a magnificent, 10,000ha reserve and conservation success story. Accommodation: The reserve has five safari lodges to suit all needs – Settlers Drift tented lodge, Ukhozi Lodge, River Lodge, Main Lodge and The Homestead.

Amakhala Game Reserve

Claim to fame: This large reserve about 65km from PE is renowned for its varied topography created by the Bushman's River.

SHAMWARI PRIVATE GAME RESERVE

Expect to see: The Big Five, more than 16 antelope species, zebras, giraffes and many small, interesting species. Need to know: Besides game drives, boat cruises and guided walks are offered. Accommodation: Amakhala has accommodation to suit all budgets. Bush Lodge and Bukela Game Lodge are five star; Safari Lodge, Hlosi Lodge and Woodbury Lodge are four star, as is Hills Nek Safaris; while Leeuwenbosch, Carnarvon Dale and the Woodbury Tented Camp are three star.

Kwandwe Private Game Reserve

Claim to fame: About 22,000ha of pristine private wilderness stretching either side of the Great Fish River. Expect to see: Kwandwe means “Place of the Blue Crane” and this reserve has a healthy population of the highly endangered birds. You’ll also find the Big Five, a variety of predators, as well as cheetah, kudu, springbuck, eland, red hartebeest, giraffe, black wildebeest and gemsbok. Aardwolf, aardvark and porcupine may be seen long after sunset. Need to know: Kwandwe makes a special effort for kids and also offers a junior ranger programme. Accommodation: Kwandwe has 26 rooms split across five distinct safari lodges and villas, making for one of the highest land-to-guest ratios in SA.

Kwantu Private Game Reserve

Need to know: Pabala offers daily adventures through its activity centre, including game drives, extreme kayaking, hiking and night fishing, starting from a budget-friendly R250.

Expect to see: The Big Five plus zebra, giraffe, hippo, wildebeest, cheetah, warthog, lynx, caracal, jackal, meerkat and loads of antelope.

Accommodation: The Country House (a modern structure overlooking Gamtoos estuary), Farmyard Cottage (cosy, two bedrooms), Stone Cottage (rustic, sleeps five), and several permanent tents constructed on wooden decks (no electricity).

Claim to fame: Kwantu is on the legendary Sidbury Plains, in the heart of Frontier Country, on the banks of the Bushman’s River.

Need to know: Kwantu is fully halaal and alcohol free. It has a prayer room for Muslim guests and options for Friday Jumu’ah prayers. Accommodation: There are fivestar accommodation options to suit couples, families and larger groups, and a variety of facilities, including a domestic animal touch farm, herb garden, reptile centre, museum, cricket field, tennis courts and more.

Budget beaters Pabala Private Nature Reserve

Claim to fame: Pabala is about 30km from Jeffrey’s Bay, and more affordable and down to earth for locals than many of the five-star reserves in the province. Expect to see: Pabala has no large predators and also doesn’t have the Big Five, but you’re sure to see a large variety of antelope, giraffes, ostriches and an abundance of birdlife.

Kragga Kamma Game Park Claim to fame: You really don’t have to leave the city for some excellent game viewing – Kragga Kamma Game Park is literally in Nelson Mandela Bay. It makes for an affordable, family-friendly day outing or you can stay over.

Expect to see: White rhino, buffalo, cheetah, giraffe, zebra, nyala, bontebok, lechwe and many more species, all the animals roam freely in natural surroundings. Need to know: You can drive in your own vehicle along the park’s well-maintained roads – no need for a 4x4 – or choose a two-hour guided tour in an open Land Rover with a professional guide. Accommodation: Kragga Kamma has two comfortable, family-friendly thatched lodges named Rhino and Cheetah, and two thatched cottages called Buffalo and Giraffe. They also have four log cabins and a safari tent.

Demand gives rise to more affordable homes

T

he high demand for affordable housing and easier lending conditions are behind the launch of developments such as Ihlathi in Parklands, Cape Town. The offering at this entry-level gated community ranges from one-bedroom apartments starting from R689,999 to penthouse units at R1,2m including transfer costs. Developed by International Housing Solutions (IHS), a global private equity fund focussed on property priced

below R1,5m, Ihlathi is the fund’s ninth gated community project. It borders a nature reserve and offers environmentally friendly technologies that use 20% less electricity and water, as well as excellent security and annual capital growth of up to 10%. According to Toni Enderli, head, Realtor of Excellence, the trend is likely to continue as stock in this sector is limited. “Some banks have responded to the

demand by offering 100% finance as they see the entry-level sector as an incubator for growth,” he says. IHS’s MD for SA, Rob Wesselo, says the affordable housing market will keep growing, especially in Parklands, which is less than 20km from the CBD, with easy access to schools, shops, work opportunities and some of the country’s most beautiful beaches. Ihlathi’s Phase 1, the first 102 apartments of a total of 384, will be ready for occupation by early 2021.

They started taking in orphaned, injured birds and animals offering a safe place for those who could not be rehabilitated and released back into the wild. As more and more came in, however, the sanctuary grew and in 1997 it was decided to open its doors to the public to subsidise the growing cost of feeding and caring for these animals and birds. The sanctuary has continued to flourish and today hosts the largest aviary in the Eastern Cape with over 250 mainly indigenous species of birds, as well as endangered animals like blue duiker, and blue and crowned cranes. Predators, such as the cheetah, serval, caracal and other animal species one doesn’t always get to see up close and personal in the wild such as meerkats, water mongoose, wallabies, springbuck and much more can be viewed. The sanctuary takes in many unwanted or injured birds and wildlife such as parrots and monkeys and also runs a rehabilitation clinic.

African Dawn is a nonprofit organisation and relies on public ticket sales when entering the park, as well as public and corporate donations of any kind to support the sanctuary and clinic. So come and join in the fun and assist in the conservation efforts at African Dawn; there are always new and exciting things happening for young and old.

T

he last decade has seen a massive uptick in South Africans choosing to emigrate and semigrate. While much has been written about the former, less is known about the trend of semigration and the motivations behind it. Successful entrepreneur, property investor and himself a semigrant, Grant Smee investigates this growing South African trend by sharing his first-hand experience.

What is semigration?

Semigration or semi-emigration is the act of moving to another location within your home country. While this definition may prompt one to ask, “Isn’t that just known as moving?”, semigration is distinguished by the motivating factors behind the relocation. Just like those who emigrate, they hope that a change of location will be the key to a better life. Unlike emigrants, however, they feel that a better life is still possible within South Africa.

Those who chose to semigrate are moving in search of a better quality of life, away from the dangers and stresses of the concrete jungle. It’s therefore no surprise that Gauteng and specifically Joburg and surrounds have been worst affected by the semigration trend. Concerns about the long-term physical and psychological effects of the stresses of urban living have been compounded by an increase in incidents of crime within the city. With this in mind, it is ironic that Cape Town, named the most crime-ridden region of the country by the SAPS, is such a popular destination for semigrants.

Grant’s decades of experience as a property investor have allowed him to view semigration as not just a personal decision, but as a savvy investment opportunity too. “The Cape Town property market is currently overcrowded and vulnerable to spikes in crime. However, I’d highlight the smaller towns along the Western Cape coast to any prospective semigrants, as they’re able to offer both the quality of life these semigrants seek, and the promise of a

While people who choose to semigrate are sometimes couples or even individuals, most who make the decision to semigrate are those with families, particularly young children. “Our family decided to semigrate from Joburg to Cape Town for several reasons. We opted for a coastal lifestyle where the kids could enjoy the outdoors and play on the beach, we based ourselves in an area with access to several good schools and took security into consideration, too,” says Grant.

Those who can afford it have found a workaround. Some businesspeople, like Grant, choose to stay in coastal provinces with their families on the weekends and travel to the country’s major cities during the week for work. This situation can be less than ideal when factoring in transport costs, the environmental impact of frequent travel, and the personal toll of spending long periods of time away from one’s family.

“Ultimately,” he concludes, “whether or not semigration is the right choice for you or your family is entirely dependent on your unique situation. One thing can, and should apply to everyone though, and that’s the reminder that the grass is not greener on the other side just by virtue of it being on the other side. The grass is as green as you make it.”

However, many who’ve done their best to leave the Big Smoke behind, have found themselves unable to be rid of it entirely. The reasons for this are primarily economic, with Joburg still being the country’s financial hub and therefore where the majority of the country’s work opportunities are located.

Semigrating may not be as complicated a process as emigrating, but it still involves numerous financial and legal measures that are often unforeseen. Prior to taking the plunge, it’s important to take note of every pro and con involved in the relocation. “That’s why before making this kind of life-altering decision I would recommend that every prospective semigrant consult with a property expert in their new area,” says Grant.
