T
he town was named after James Somers Kirkwood, who came to the area in the 1870s from Port Elizabeth to auction off a farm on which the town was later founded. Prior to that the area was the scene of frontier wars in the early 1800s. It would later also see Boer War action. Kirkwood saw potential for the valley to be transformed into irrigated fields with fruit trees and ended up buying the farm and others nearby himself. His vision only took shape after his death, when Kirkwood, the town, was founded in 1912. Today, it’s the capital of the Sundays River Valley Municipality and at the centre of SA’s largest citrus-growing region. Packhouses in Kirkwood and nearby Addo create many seasonal and permanent jobs. The town and surrounds are also home to guesthouses known for their oldschool country hospitality. Diederik Wismeijer is from Lemon 3 Lodge, overlooking the Rietberg mountains about 1,5km outside town, while Marietjie Hidge and her husband, Archie, own Hitgeheim Country Lodge, about 23km from Kirkwood towards Addo.

The Hitges have lived here for 29 years, and Marietjie says the location, lifestyle and sense of community most appealed to them. Hitgeheim was expanded from just four chalets in 2008 to 16 in 2017 to capitalise on growing international appeal of the Addo Elephant National Park. “There was a need for more accommodation for the growing number of park visitors,” Marietjie says.
Property Main Street has art deco-styled houses and buildings from the 1920s and 1930s, while the townships of AquaPark, Moses Mabida and Msingeni have mainly RDP homes from the mid1990s and up, Diederik says. There are modern-era homes in town, too, Marietjie says, and Kirkwood even has a few townhouses and flats, and a retirement centre called Valleihof. Because of the citrus industry boom, property in and around town is now worth much more than before. “Prices are high as there’s a shortage of housing in the valley, and demand is high due to the growth of the citrus industry.”
Schools The town’s best-known school is Kirkwood High School. Others
include Bergsig Primary and Secondary School, and St Colmcille Secondary School. Hermitage House in Addo is a private school with preschool and primary classes. Some Kirkwood children are boarders in Port Elizabeth, Uitenhage and Makhanda (previously Grahamstown). The nearest university is Nelson Mandela University in Port Elizabeth – an hour’s drive.
Explore Kirkwood is half an hour’s drive – about 40km – from the Greater Addo Elephant National Park, where scores of tourist activities are available. Many road-trippers heading to Addo make Kirkwood part of their itinerary. The Lookout in the mountains outside Kirkwood, is where James Somers Kirkwood first had his vision for the Sundays River Valley, and where Sir Percy FitzPatrick, author of Jock of the Bushveld, is buried. It also boasts a panoramic view of Kirkwood and the surrounding farmlands. The area around The Lookout is known for fossils – the first complete dinosaur fossil found in South Africa, nicknamed Kirky, came from near here.

SHOP • Apart from good citrus you’ll find quality, locally-made, related produce such as marmalade. • Meat and venison from the area are excellent, and it’s worth stocking up at the local butcheries. • There’s a supermarket, Dagbreek Spar, in Main Road; the town centre also has a Shoprite, Build It, farmers’ co-op, Pep and other stores. • There’s no mall in town and residents head to Port Elizabeth or Uitenhage to do “big shops”.

• Kronenhoff, a Cape Dutch-styled guesthouse in Sonop Street, is home to a restaurant which is well supported by the locals. They do a good kudu steak and are known for their lamb curry, Diederik says. • With Addo Elephant National Park so close to Kirkwood, locals like Diederik often head for the Kabouga gate at Bergsig to braai in the park. There’s also a Cattle Baron in the main camp. • The town of Addo is home to numerous eateries, among them at Africanos and Lenmore. River Front Estate has a restaurant, as does Addo Wildlife. Marley’s does breakfasts only.

PLAY • Addo Elephant National Park is only half and hour’s drive from Kirkwood. • The Adrenalin Addo Adventure Park has zip-lining, canoeing, a giant swing and other activities, while Addo Wildlife has a wildlife centre, farmstall, restaurant and accommodation. • Kirkwood’s annual Wildsfees attracts families from far and wide. It includes a game auction and jampacked entertainment. • Private game farms near Kirkwood and Addo – Schotia Safaris is just one – draw visitors from around the globe. There are also numerous hunting farms. • Daniell Cheetah Project on the R75 near Kirkwood has a restaurant, shop and animal interactions. • The Bedrogfontein trail between the Kabouga and Darlington areas of the elephant park is a 4X4 enthusiast’s dream. • Take the kids camping or on a selfcatering break on the banks of the Sundays River. • There’s a golf course in town. • The Moravian Mission Station, built for the Khoi at Enon in 1818, is about 15 minutes from Kirkwood. A gravel road leads to this small village whose quaint church has yellowwood rafters and other original features.

peak to any kitchen and bathroom designer like Umhlanga’s Morley Miller, and they’ll come up with a host of stylish storage concepts. “Storage for kitchens and bathrooms is coming of age. Superb quality products in contemporary colours and materials specifically to fit into or onto existing cupboards or units, not only look good, but function brilliantly. Larson Industries produce some really stylish storage options,” Natasha Miller of Morley Miller says.
Storage as decor
For smaller spaces, keep storage off the floor and ideally use the items to be stored as an integral part of the decor. So, if it’s beautiful waffle-weave grey towels, fold or roll them into boxed, cubed or
floating shelves – even tubes – or fit them into baskets on those shelves. The towel colours, the type and colour of the wood or melamine, all talk to the look and feel. Nothing is accidental. Tinks Robinson of Peppergreen Interiors says, “Wooden shelving in various forms is big – floating, hanging, or shelves with attractive forged brackets with rail and hooks beneath.” A bedroom headboard is a wonderful multipurpose storage unit-cum-side table. Designed around your bed size and bedroom look, custom design it as a wall fixture. Whether you choose a rustic untreated wood unit, or matt or glossy spray-painted surfaces, the unit can combine cubed cupboards with open cubes and shelving, mood lighting and reading lights. A large, slim, plain box in a colour/woodgrain as a headboard, can be very effective, but with side access which includes deep narrow shelves – open or with doors.
Multifunctional furniture
Today, there’s a wide range of beds with superb storage facilities in a range of permutations. You might like the entire mattress section to lift from the empty base or platform – near invisible – or rather include feature shelving and cupboards. It’s ideal for linen and scatter cushions. For kids’ rooms, cubes and baskets are perfect for holding toys. Units on
castors make for easy manoeuvrability, whether under a bed or as an ottoman. Upholstered ottomans and cubes have long been storage vehicles; so too, says Robinson, “built-in window seats, with hinged seats that open”. If you prefer, day beds or window seats can rather have open or cubed shelving.
Hidden storage
For those tight on space, Robinson suggests raising the floor, so it’s essentially a low wooden platform with a useful gap beneath. “Flat baskets on castors as well as suitcases can be stored in there, while removable front panels disguise the fact that there’s storage space.” Robinson also suggests converting stairs. “Install drawers where the riser panel is, or the riser panel could be made into a door, allowing space beneath the tread open for storage. Also, utilise your ceiling space by installing a tucked-away ladder or quality pull-stairs – it’s ideal for little used items or any bulk household purchases.”
Quirky or repurposed storage Spray paint old steamer trunks, a vintage fridge shell or industrial lockers; mount old metal wire baskets or trays on the wall. It’s wonderful to have an element of quirkiness, even in the most traditional of decor spaces.
A first in Sandton CBD A
revolution in service-led urban living, BlackBrick has launched a new residential concept in the Sandton CBD. The accessible pricing means that rental pricing can start at around R8,000 per month. The turnkey offering includes a number of bolt-on packages which can be added to the apartment purchase,
including a tech-pack, electric bicycle, car sharing and more. Most notable is BlackBrick BOX, a furniture brand which is a partnership between BlackBrick and Weylandts, aimed at providing high-quality yet accessible furniture to the urban market. Cheaper loans, banks keener to lend T he interest rate cut has made housing loans cheaper; the banks are competing aggressively for home loan business and there’s every reason for buyers to get into the property market, says Samuel Seeff, chairman, Seeff Property Group.
Start with a pre-qualification to avoid disappointment and know exactly how much you can buy for. Approach your own bank or a mortgage originator such as Ooba who works with all major banks and can likely secure a better deal for you, says Seeff.
It’s easier to find a willing bank, provided you qualify for a mortgage loan and the process is fairly straightforward.
Unless a first time buyer, you’ll in all likelihood need to pay part of the deposit in cash. Budget for around 10% to 15%.
You’ll need a clear credit record and positive credit score, provide proof of income and Fica verification of your identity and address. If self-employed, the process is a little more involved and you’ll need additional documentation.
Additionally, you’ll need to pay transfer duty (above R900,000) and transaction costs. On a R1,5m property, this would amount to about R90,500 (inclusive of bond costs). Once you’ve found your property and your offer
to purchase is accepted, a formal application for a housing loan will need to be done. Your agent will assist with this with the help of a mortgage originator, or via your own bank.
In terms of the National Credit Act, the bank will provide a “quotation” or preagreement setting out the loan amount, proposed interest rate and terms upon which they’re prepared to grant the loan. The applicant (borrower) then has five business days to shop around for a better deal or to accept the quote. Sean Guy, sectional title division manager, Seeff Southern Suburbs, says the banks essentially look at affordability of the loan to the buyer and
their assessed value of the property and will need to satisfy itself that there’s sufficient equity in the property. If the bank’s valuer does not find value, it may still grant a bond but based on the lower valuation of the property. Assuming a property is sold for R2m subject to an 80% bond, but the bank only finds R1,8m in value and consequently offers an 80% loan on that lower value, the buyer will be left with having to make up the shortfall. If unable to do so, the sale would likely become void. This again just drives the point of pre-qualification and ensuring that you invest wisely and work with a credible agent, says Guy.

ot everybody has the luxury of an expansive, exclusive patio, and even those who do are looking to make that little, often awkward and cluttered space look more attractive. It can work well when the weather makes the other side of the home uninhabitable, and can be made into a more relaxed, family space. It can be hard-wearing, quirky, covered or uncovered – whatever takes your fancy (and budget). It’s certainly a plus when the time comes to market your home. You can make the space look better with very little cash. Do it yourself if you have the time and the inclination, and if you enjoy an eclectic mix, get odd pieces of furniture from friends and relatives and give them a new lease of life. Always plan first. Look at the space, work out precisely what you need and, as with indoor decorating, measure the size of the furniture needed. If you’re starting from scratch,
begin with the floor. Consider decking, large concrete pavers or a simple concrete slab. If it’s a small area, keep it clean with large monotone elements so the space appears bigger. Floating seating, like a suspended slatted bench, works well, as does a concrete bench. A low concrete table and side server also work well – they’re waterproof, organic-looking, monotone and easy to clean. Make sure you have a covered space to store cushions. Look at the walls, creepers, murals, mirrors, lattice work, and, if you have enough sunlight, consider a herb wall. You could also put in succulents. A growing wall works wonderfully here, whether it’s the full monty, a panel, or shelves on which you position pot plants. Oversized planters also work well; position them well, choose maintenance-free plants with a graphic look and uplight them. Decorate as you would indoors, but be practical. Keep your framework simple – wood, concrete or metal – and, if you want to introduce botanicals or
colour, do it in your cushions, throws or large pots. If your space is small, consider sticking to plain cushions such as bull denim slipcovers. A fixed or moveable fire pit or fireplace of some kind is a real conversation piece or meditative space just for you –
something separate from your braai. Firelight is a wonderful mood-setter, but don’t neglect other types of lighting, such as solar fairy lights, tiny wall lights or large jar solar lights. If it’s doable, consider fitting an extendable awning.
