O
lympus, named after Mount Olympus, the home of the gods in Greek mythology, lies on the tranquil far-eastern outskirts of Pretoria. The various lifestyle developments within the suburb are collectively known as the “Boardwalk Estates”.

This group of security estates was developed on the banks of the Tweefontein Spruit, which branches off the Moreleta Spruit and meanders along a greenbelt through Olympus. The estates were designed with the boardwalk theme in mind, but remain in absolute harmony with the surrounding natural environment. The area boasts prolific birdlife and includes the Boardwalk Bird Sanctuary. Although home to many prestigious, sizeable, higher-end homes, the Boardwalk Estates are made up of a wide range of properties, enabling a diverse group of residents to enjoy the delightful, uninterrupted environment and lifestyle of the area. The renowned Boardwalk Manor Estate, with its striking landscaped gardens, fountains and statues, reflects the look and feel of a charming Italian village. Urban housing can help Cape Town’s congestion
W
ith Cape Town being the most congested city in the country, and Capetonians spending an average of 42 minutes each day in traffic, the City of Cape Town launched the “Drive Less, Live More” campaign earlier this year, with the aim of reducing congestion. While the City has proposed solutions like flexible working programmes, working remotely and carpooling to address the problem, there’s one avenue that was not explored: reasonably priced housing in well-located areas of the city. Over 30% of the Cape metropole’s entire labour force works in the Cape Town city centre, but
few are able to afford to live close to their place of employment. This means that thousands have to commute. However, Cape Town’s road infrastructure lacks the capacity to keep up with growing demand due to rapid urbanisation, resulting in heavy congestion and long travel times. These commutes have a negative impact on the environment, employee wellbeing as well as their productivity.

While the City is making progress in providing housing in and near the city centre for those who earn less than R15,000 a month, the private property sector could be providing well-located urban homes for the middle-income market and, in doing so, help curb congestion.

Global cities appear to be entering an age where the purpose of a successful city is to attract people, not traffic – to facilitate the flow of ideas, not just money, and to nurture human capital, not just financial capital. Property market resilience
A
drastic slowdown in the property markets of smaller Mpumalanga towns, due to the closing of mines, outdated infrastructure and other factors, has fuelled the resilience of Mbombela (formerly Nelspruit). The town’s market, which is underpinned by the booming farming and forestry industries and regular international events, has held its own during the economic downswing. Eric Slabbert, principal and owner, Prime Platinum Property Mbombela, says that well-priced homes in the entry to mid-markets are still selling well, with a medium turnaround time of between three and five months while homes at the upper end of the market typically take between five and nine months to sell. “Our main challenge has been reaching a broader market and adequately showcasing properties to attract buyers
from other areas, especially now that more and more people are looking to move away from cities in search of a more tranquil lifestyle,” says Slabbert. To this end, Prime Platinum Property has embraced the latest digital technology which has been galvanising the real estate industry abroad and was recently introduced to the South African market. “With the 3-D clarity and detail of the augmented reality technology offered by the Propscan app, it will be much easier for potential buyers to effectively narrow their search or even choose a property,” says Slabbert. “In an increasingly competitive marketplace, and a world where consumers now expect instant access to concise information, it is essential to be able to efficiently showcase the options available to buyers, especially those who are not familiar with the area.”

“This was another incredibly productive WPN meet and greet for the KwaZulu-Natal chapter that has further strengthened the mutually beneficial relationship that exists between WPN and our generous hosts, Tongaat Hulett Developments,” said Sandi Mbutuma, chairperson, WPN. Since its inception in 2000, WPN has grown to include more than 400 members countrywide with chapters established in KwaZulu-Natal, Gauteng, and Eastern and Western
Cape. Through networking events, such as these, WPN is able to fulfil its mandate of advancing the success of women in a male-dominated industry, acting as a catalyst for change. The organisation also offers a number of educational programmes promoting economic self-sufficiency as well as skills development, which is achieved through ongoing workshops and programmes. The WPN Educational Trust – a key focus for the organisation – was established for the awarding of bursaries to previously disadvantaged female students studying towards a propertyrelated degree or diploma. Since 2008, just under 70 bursaries have been awarded, 13 of which were awarded in 2017 totalling more than R800,000.
Q: How did your business start? A: I was practically raised in a jewellery shop. I come from a household of second-generation jewellers, so manufacturing jewellery came naturally to me. A: At least eight out of 10 people who walk past my shop come into the jewellery shop to either make use of my manufacturing services or to view my products. Q: Do you have any expansion plans?
