The real estate market in Faerie Glen includes a mix of properties meeting the demands of its diverse community. The neighbourhood caters for middle to higher income households comprising mostly adult (36 – 49 years old) and middle-aged (50 – 64) families, with a quarter of stable owners being 65 and over. Recent upmarket developments and expansions in Pretoria East, such as Menlyn Maine a few minutes’ drive from the neighbourhood, have led to higher interest from youngsters (18 – 35) wanting to buy property in the area. Properties for sale in Faerie Glen cost anything from R700,000 upwards. There are entry-level apartments, compact townhouses and duets, medium-sized units in townhouse complexes with an average asking price of about R1,2m; freestanding homes with three bedrooms or more starting around R1,6m and averaging approximately R2,2m; as well as multimillion-rand supersized homes in luxury estates with breathtaking views of the slopes of the Bronberg. A number of vacant stands are also available in the suburb.

Schooling With at least one-third of stable property owners in Faerie Glen between the ages of 36 and 49, the suburb has many crèches, preschools and daycare facilities. The closest primary and high schools are located in neighbouring Garsfontein. Laerskool Garsfontein is situated only 3km from Faerie Glen and is considered one of Pretoria’s top Afrikaans-medium primary schools and offers education from Grade R to Grade 7 as well as aftercare facilities.

My business T neighbourhood The South African Girl Company offers an exclusive environment where girls can be spoiled and pampered in Waterkloof Ridge WORDS & IMAGES: ZENA LE ROUX

he South African Girl Company is all about the love of girls. It offers elegant dining experiences (brunch, three-course lunches and high tea) for little girls, picnics in the garden, a mini spa and classes in floristry, art, cooking, sewing and more. Owner Derick Tait tells us more. Q: How did your business start? A: It’s been a long-time dream of mine to have a special place for girls to be spoiled and pampered. After a lot of planning and hard work, I decided to just go for it. This year, the dream came true. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Waterkloof Ridge is perfectly located for people from central and east Pretoria to make use of our services. We’re also located on a prominent street corner with great visibility for passers-by. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We’re so lucky to have the opportunity to rent from a friend. The property is really big, so she still lives on the premises. It’s really a win-win situation. The gardens are lush with beautiful old trees – a perfect setting for girls to be spoiled – so it was an obvious choice when the possibility presented itself.

located close to various schools in the area. It’s also very central and easy to access from most areas in Pretoria. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We’re surrounded by homes of diplomats. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: Quite pricey, but the value is really good and the area is perfect for our kind of business, so we’re not complaining. Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: We have a 40-seater restaurant and, on a busy day, we can easily fill it up with 40 girls and about 10 moms. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: The dream is to franchise the brand and to roll it out to various areas. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, our website is sagirlco.co.za. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: A ll our services are performing well, but the high tea, mini spa and the classes are the most popular.

SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The house has a fairy-tale look and is therefore perfect to host girls. We also have ample parking and we’re

Less is more

The Swedish concept “lagom” is all about simplifying and decluttering your home WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

A

University of California, Los Angeles, study on the “Everyday Lives of Families” concluded that the relationship between clutter, anxiety and stress is chemical. It was found that women who live in cluttered homes have higher than average levels of the stress hormone cortisol. The Swedish word “lagom” can be roughly translated as “not too little, not too much, just right”. Applying the concept in your life can help you find balance. The book by Linnea Dunne, Lagom: The Swedish Art of Balanced Living, is a good introduction because lagom isn’t a flash-in-the-pan trend; it’s a focused approach to life.

Lagom in your life?

Lagom affects everything you do. Sustainability plays a major role, and whether it’s growing your own herbs, making your own compost, buying only what you need, even cooking more simply with less, it’s also about ensuring the sustainability of the source. You’re looking to balance work and life, which includes good amounts of downtime for you.

Decor

Alon Sachs, co-owner of Mobelli Furniture + Living, is a big advocate of lagom. “With living simply comes decorating simply, which is the key to living well – just find what works for you,” says Alon. “Start with your furniture; get rid of those unwanted pieces, declutter your indoor living area and live simply.” He says that decluttering the home does a world of good for the soul, helping you destress and enjoy a sense of calm and ease.

Polk Sunday Times Neighbourhood Ad 30 May 2018 curves.indd 1

Alon believes that embracing this trend comes down to how you arrange your indoor living space.

Less is more

Alon says that sustainable, sophisticated furniture pieces with simple, clean design lines tick all the right boxes. “With the right decor items, balance, comfort and utility will work in harmony.” Each piece of furniture needs interrogation and should be seen as part of the bigger picture. So often we fall in love with a single item, without giving too much thought about how it integrates into the whole. Or, indeed, how it makes you feel or, perhaps, how you want to feel in the space. Bearing in mind the lagom way of living harmoniously, ensure everything is easy to maintain. Alon suggests incorporating furniture with a relaxing look and feel, with soft and neutral shades, into your indoor living space.

“Consider including furniture with material combinations into the mix; they offer that much-needed balance between modernity and comfort. Ensure the living space is trendy and conforms easily with the lagom way of living.”

Accessories

Alon says having too many accessories can clutter up your home and take up too much of your time. So choose carefully and don’t confuse mementoes/knickknacks with decorative accessories. “Keep in mind that if you’re going with the ‘less is more’ theme, then accessories should be simple and minimalistic to make that ultimate statement of style in your home.”

Simplify

Decor isn’t just about decorating a home. It’s a reflection of who we are. Paring down decor could be a good way to reduce the tendency to hoard, overbuy clothing and overstock fridges, and, according to research, it will help reduce stress.
