hefs who Share – The ART of Giving is one of the most thoughtful and inspiring projects I’ve ever come across. Started by the enigmatic Barbara Lenhard and now in its fourth year, the project raises funds to uplift communities. The event – one of the greatest culinary and art lifestyle events – will this time take place in Joburg this month. Among the many platforms is the Chefs who Share – Young Chef Award, which is a search for the most promising and talented local chef. The final seven young chefs (from some of the country’s top restaurants and hotels) have been selected. Each chef, between the ages of 18 and 29, had to submit a canape creation, which was judged by industry experts. The young chefs in the final are: Conrad van den Heever, senior sous chef from Greenhouse-Cellars Hohenort; Anand Bhana, junior sous chef from Hartford House; Blaine Robert Coetzer, senior chef de partie at Leeu Estate; David Graham-Parker, junior chef de partie at Level Four; Leeandra Govender, junior sous pastry chef at Roots; Elize Benson, senior chef de partie at Roots; and Anthonie James van Zyl, commis chef at Tokara. These young chefs will get an incredible opportunity to work alongside 14 of their national and

international culinary heroes – including Michelin-starred Vineet Bhatia from London, Vincent Rodier from Mauritius, and chef Reto Mathis from Switzerland – at the Grand Gala on 24 September in the Johannesburg City Hall. The winner will be announced at the gala and, besides local recognition, will win a trip to Europe to work in a Michelin-star restaurant and visit the headquarters of Moët & Chandon in Épernay, France, to experience the culinary and oenological highlights of Champagne. Now that’s a once in a lifetime experience! he steam of my artisan coffee fills the fresh, early morning air. I’m surrounded by rustic wooden furniture in a stylish but informal set-up. The attractive glass house upstairs offers a bird’s-eye view of the picturesque surroundings. Spout Coffee Company opened at the beginning of May as an answer to the high demand for artisanal coffee. The concept behind Spout was to have an outlet that serves excellent coffee seven days a week. Customers can expect a consistently excellent cup of coffee, offered in a variety of ways – from delicious cappuccinos to the deep, rich tones of an espresso; a playful dessert option made of espresso and dulce de leche cream; and then a slightly more daring summer coffee cocktail (espresso served with Indian tonic). Despite the menu being fairly limited due to the small kitchen facilities, Spout also offers a variety of continental-style breakfast options, delectable pastries, wonderful cakes and brilliant gourmet sarmies. S

pring is in the air and this is reiterated by more frequent bee sightings, the temperature rising with each passing day and the blossoms peeping out of tree branches everywhere. Spring’s 2016 debut is welcomed with smiles as the whiff of jasmine surprises inhabitants of the capital city. Turning your drink into a bouquet of colour and fragrance with edible flowers seems like the perfect way to celebrate. Don’t know where to start? We have put together three rosy-floral drinks recipes that are perfectly easy to make and deliciously fragrant.

Iced hibiscus and rose teetotaller

Place the hibiscus tea and the black tea teabags in a heatproof glass teapot or bottle. Boil the water and pour into the container. Let the tea steep for 15 minutes then remove the black tea teabags and add the honey. Adjust the sweetness to your preference. Let the tea cool down completely and then add the rosewater. Chill the mixture in the fridge until it is cold. Strain the tea to remove all tea leaves, petals and teabags. Serve this over lots of ice or diluted with soda water. Garnish with slices of lemon or grapefruit or dried rose petals.

Rose and elderflower gin and tonic (serves 1)

Ingredients: • 3 hibiscus tea teabags • 2 black tea teabags • 1L water • 100ml honey • 2 Tbsp rosewater

Ingredients: • Ice • 1 shot gin • Sprig of fresh tarragon • Pink food colouring • Fever-Tree Elderflower Tonic Water • Rose petals

In a cocktail shaker filled with ice, add the gin and the sprig of fresh tarragon with a hint of pink food colouring. Let the tarragon sit in the gin for a few minutes and then continue to shake well and strain into a cocktail glass. Top off the glass with the tonic water and garnish with a rose petal and a sprig of tarragon.

Vodka rose and honey lemonade (serves 1)

Ingredients: • 2 Tbsp rosewater • 2 Tbsp fresh lemon juice • 1 shot vodka (or omit to make a mocktail) • 2 Tbsp honey • A few drops of pomegranate juice for colour (optional) • ¾ cup sparkling lemonade Combine the rose water, fresh lemon juice, vodka, honey and pomegranate juice in a cocktail shaker and fill with ice. Shake until combined and then strain into a glass. Pour the sparkling lemonade into the mixture and garnish with fresh roses.

esmond Mongwe, chief technical officer, moWallet, was set up at The Innovation Hub in Lynnwood after winning the Start-Up Weekend Soweto in October 2015. The premises are convenient for business as they provide business support, entrepreneurs nearby and the latest technology and innovations. Q: How did your business start? A: I created an app called PopApp Deals Solution using the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD) platform enabling spaza shop owners to communicate and deliver discounts, incentives, vouchers, food parcels and social products to customers. The idea was to create a rewards programme for low LSM markets as these programmes were only aimed at middle and high LSM markets, but the people who needed benefits most are mainly township households. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: The Innovation Hub hosts over

Neighbourhood 100 start-up companies from different industries providing business support through the Maxum Business Incubator, an entrepreneurship support programme growing technology enterprises. It provides an ideal environment for start-up companies to stay current with trends and drives business and networking opportunities. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I was allocated space at The Innovation Hub at no cost for nine months due to winning the Startup Weekend Soweto in October 2015, where I was awarded a contract to be part of the Maxum Business Incubator programme. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The Innovation Hub is a big office park with state-of-the-art technology such as a biometric access control system and internet facilities. It is designed to support start-up businesses, enabling entrepreneurs to stay current with latest innovations, participate in networking sessions and be surrounded by like-minded entrepreneurs at the hub. The office is situated in an open-plan area with a shared reception and private meeting rooms. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: MoWallet is part of the Maxum Business Incubator programme, so office space, internet, boardroom and meeting rooms are offered at no cost. The average rental price in this area is between R120/m² and R140/m², and selling prices between R18,000/m² and R21,000/m².

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: MLab, a mobile solutions laboratory developing mobile apps; Geekulcha, an ICT skills development and training company; and Tour 2.0, providing unique South African tours, is in the same precinct; and the CSIR is across the road. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: I see approximately two clients per week at the hub, but our platform is currently used by ChesaNyama and McDonald’s at their outlets nationwide, servicing customers nationwide. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I plan to increase the number of distribution points where customers can redeem vouchers. We are currently partnering with strategic companies to increase our footprint. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: The company doesn’t operate online, only through mobile and franchise retail outlets. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Most popular is the USSD white label solution. Clients usually always requests the USSD mobile solution to deliver vouchers to customers to drive customers to their stores so they can increase sales and collect market research data.

he share of African continent buyers of total foreigner buying of South African property declined mildly in the first half of 2016 to 27,5% from a twoquarter moving average of 31% for the first quarter of 2016. However, this is still high compared to the 8,5% of 2010. A 2016 survey by New World Wealth supported this change in foreign

In addition, the Old Mutual Savings and Investment Monitor 2016 found that only 20% of single mothers surveyed feel financially secure. It also found that one-third of single mothers are financially supporting their parents or other family members in addition to looking after their own children. Together with estimates that around half of single mothers receive no financial support, this indicates how vulnerable this group is in South Africa. While this is a severe situation, there are steps that any single mother can take to help to secure a better financial future:
