The next generation The Cape Winemakers Guild recently celebrated the 10 year anniversary of its Protégé Programme. The programme gives aspirant winemakers the opportunity to work side by side with members of the guild during a threeyear internship. Neighbourhood was there to witness the accomplishments and how innovation and the sharing of knowledge span more than 33 years of winemaking excellence. The Cape Winemakers Guild started the programme with the aim of not only cultivating young winemakers

and viticulturists, but also bringing transformation to the industry. Since then, 20 talented protégés have entered the programme with no less than 12 of them now pursuing successful careers. The 10 year anniversary emphasises that soon we will see the first generation of protégés earning their stripes and joining the prestigious Cape Winemakers Guild and, hopefully, changing the face of the industry as we know it.

Q: What kind of red wine is a safe bet as a crowd pleaser? Is there a specific South African red wine you can recommend? A: Syrah and Syrah-based blends. The South African climate suits the cultivar, thus most regions can produce good Syrah. The natural spiciness of Syrah off-sets the lovely plum and blackberry fruit making even a low-cost wine quite complex. You tend to get better value Syrahs than other red cultivars in South Africa because of all this. Joostenberg Family Blend Red 2015 and Trizanne Signature Wines Syrah Grenache 2014 are both great value Syrah-based wines. Q: Which South African wineries should we keep an eye on? A: The rise of “new Stellenbosch” is almost here. Producers such as Boschkloof, Craven and Keermont are all doing super-interesting things and focusing on expressing unique vineyards – really exciting stuff. Q: How does the way you store your wine influence it? A: Wine likes to be cool, in the dark and consistently so. Fluctuations

in either temperature or light are bad. Poorly stored wine can taste cooked or baked – not undrinkable, but certainly not what you paid for. Q: What is the most valuable tip you can give the layman to enhance their tasting experience? A: Good glassware. Take your time when drinking. Smell the wine. Think about it. Talk about it. Best way to improve is to taste with people better than you. Find a mentor and learn off them. Q: Can you suggest three restaurants in Pretoria with great red wine collections? A: Black Bamboo Restaurant, Ritrovo Ristorante and Life Grand Café, and Restaurant Mosaic is out of town, but it is well worth the drive.

NEED TO KNOW: David Clarke has been in the wine industry since the late 1990s and has worked in Australia, the UK and South Africa in both high-end wine retail and fine dining establishments. He was certified as a sommelier with the Court of Master Sommeliers in Australia in the mid 2000s. David moved to Cape Town in January 2013 on a permanent basis with his wife Jeannette and together they currently run the Ex Animo Wine Company, which focuses on high-quality, low-production fine wine in South Africa.

eople will always seek novelty. It seems like we’re programmed to positively respond to newness. And with much greater access to information, and globalised design points of view, it seems finding something truly unique is harder than ever. However, there’s a design trend at the moment countering this by hiding features in products that only the user gets to see or appreciate. Joburg-based design studio snapp incorporates this trend into its products through its design philosophy of eliciting a “smile in the mind”. Jonathan Fundudis, founder of snapp, says the company strives to create objects that speak to people on an emotional level. This approach

can be seen in products such as the trunk jewellery tree, which features a hidden compartment made for treasured objects. Jonathan says, “The delight factor which we incorporated into this seemingly simplistic product was a secret compartment which also played on the notion of a hidden treasure.” In a world where the choices are infinite and, theoretically, available to everyone, it’s hard to find anything that’s really unique anymore. These kinds of products help to counter this homogenisation of design by keeping something hidden purely for the owner. There’s a phrase often thrown

around in branding and design that a product or service should surprise and delight a user, and while it’s often a stretch for more pedestrian items to deliver on this, products with hidden charms like these, really can.

tandard Bank Report’s House Price Index (HPI) edged up 7,3% year on year in June from a downwardly revised 6,6% year on year in May. Sub-indices show freehold properties increased 8,7% year on year, from a slightly

downwardly revised 7,8% year on year in May, while sectional title properties were flat at 9,6% year on year. The resilience in property prices reflects credit extension

that took longer than expected to decline, in line with deteriorating macroeconomic conditions – declining real disposable income, rising food inflation, interest rates and unemployment – and tighter financial conditions.

The residential property market currently makes South Africa a haven for foreign purchasers. Many locals are finding themselves negotiating with foreigners as they have the ability to fund cash transactions which promises a quick and hassle-free process. Rea Vaya to boost Sandton Central E T

he world of work has changed. Very few people spend their entire working lives with a single employer any more. Most of us will change jobs a number of times, which also means that we will keep changing pension funds. And every time we move, we will be faced with the decision of what to do with the money we have saved through our current employer. Unfortunately, most people think it is easier to simply take this money out. It is seen as a windfall to pay off debt, buy a car or put down a deposit on a house. Few people consider, however, or even understand, the implications of doing this. Many also don’t realise that they always have the option of preserving their retirement savings. Sometimes they can simply elect to remain a member of the fund even though they are no longer making contributions, but otherwise they will need to transfer their money into a preservation vehicle.

Essentially, you are therefore creating a double tax liability for yourself. If you preserve your pension savings, however, you do not pay any tax at the time, and you will be able to take a full R500,000 tax free when you retire.

Finally, and probably most importantly, however, when you withdraw your pension savings you are taking money from your future self. The two most critical components in creating a pension pot are how much money you can invest, and how long it stays there. The power of compounding means that the longer you stay invested, the more your money will grow. And the reality is that most people who withdraw pension savings are never able to make up what they have lost out on for exactly this reason.

This should be the default option, and for good reason. Anyone thinking of withdrawing their pension money needs to understand how serious a decision this really is:

Withdrawing money from a pension fund before retirement comes with a big tax drawback. Only the first R25,000 will be tax free, and after that you will pay tax between 18% and 36% on the full amount, depending on how much you take.

What’s more, every time you withdraw, the amounts are added together. So the more you take, the higher the rate of tax you will pay.

On top of this, every withdrawal you make from your pension savings reduces the amount that you can take tax free at retirement.

The 2016 Sanlam Benchmark survey revealed that 38% of those who withdrew pension benefits during their working lives, were unaware of the longterm effects, and 48% regretted the decision

xpanding its Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, Joburg will bring Rea Vaya’s fast, convenient and affordable bus service to Sandton Central within the next two years. Boosting all modes of transport and easing traffic flows, the project will also add improvements to infrastructure in Sandton Central with new bridges, widened main roads, upgraded pavements and signage, and a dedicated

cycling and walking path linking Alexandra with Sandton. “The infrastructure improvement to roads, pavements and public transport the BRT introduces, support Sandton Central’s position at the forefront of well-managed central business districts,” says Elaine Jack, city improvement district manager, Sandton Central Management District. Sandton Central is a key destination in the R3bn Phase 1C of Rea Vaya,

which began construction in 2014. This phase is expected to add 245 buses to the 277-bus fleet. It comprises 16km of dedicated trunk route that extends Rea Vaya’s route from Parktown to Alexandra and on to Sandton and beyond. Rea Vaya will have at least two stations in Sandton Central. The project adds two new bridges across the M1 highway – one for BRT buses and pedestrians, the other for cyclists and pedestrians.

unicipal rates and service charges went up 1 July in cities and towns all around the country and that is not only going to mean higher running costs for homeowners, but higher holding costs for home-sellers. Berry Everitt, CEO, Chas Everitt International group, says, “At the moment, our experience is that there are many empty-nesters eager to downsize from their large family homes in order to cut their monthly expenses and put the savings towards their retirement plans, and we

expect this round of municipal increases to amplify this trend. “There is good demand for their properties from developers as well as younger buyers with growing families, so it’s possible for them to sell quite quickly – provided that they seek the advice of a qualified and experienced estate agent to help them set a realistic, marketrelated asking price,” he says. According to him, the latest round of municipal increases make it all the more important for prospective

sellers to guard against overpricing. “Potential buyers will just avoid any properties they regard as overpriced and these homes will then stick in the market, causing the owners’ holding costs to mount up and eat into their potential profits,” Everitt explains. Holding costs include everything you have to pay to own and run your home, such as the bond repayment, insurance, maintenance costs, any monthly levy that you pay and, of course, municipal rates and service charges.
