North The vibrant small town of GrandBaie on the north-west coast with its restaurants, shops, local markets and night life, as well as beautiful swimming beach and water sports, is lively with a laid-back island feel. It’s within easy reach of Port Louis for a dash of local city life and the SSR Botanical Gardens at Pamplemousses to revel in nature. Nearby Beachcomber Trou aux Biches offers spectacular sunsets, a 2km sandy beach, spa, a plethora of water sports, and excellent golf facilities at the nearby Mont Choisy 18-hole golf course. One of the largest five-star resorts on the island, it’s also family-friendly with a kids’ club and family villas. Zilwa Attitude is a four-star, rusticchic resort 20 minutes on shallow lagoon waters east of Grand-Baie. It gives guests a taste of the real Mauritius with a range of local experiences and two small private islands, one home to its spa. East For pure beach bliss and luxury the East Coast is home to some of the island’s top resorts. While it’s windier than the West Coast (the prevailing trade wind blows from the southeast), the best resorts take advantage of sheltered bays and coves, and are close to the stunning Île aux Cerfs, a popular boat-trip destination, where the Bernhard Lange championship golf course is another attraction. Shangri-La’s Le Touessrok offers refined island luxury in a tranquil tropical garden setting with a Givenchy spa and personal butler service. Its water sports centre is based a short boat ride away at Île aux Cerfs. The lagoon by the resort beach is tranquil with no motorised water sports close to shore. South The South Coast is the least developed and backed by spectacular mountains and forests. Le Morne on the south-western tip is a prime spot for wind-surfing and a favourite destination for those who enjoy a quieter feel with easy access to the Black River Gorges National Park for its waterfalls, hiking, birdlife, and the Chamarel seven-coloured earth.
Paradis Beachcomber Golf Resort and Spa on the Le Morne peninsula combines excellent water sports including kitesurfing, with an 18-hole golf course, and has both kids club and teens programmes. It shares the facilities of next-door sister hotel Dinarobin, also a five-star. Heritage Le Telfair at Domaine de Bel Ombre is a sophisticated beach destination on the tranquil South Coast, ideally located for the 18-hole championship golf course designed by Peter Matkovich at Heritage Golf Club, extensive water sports, and a 2km sandy beach.
West Sheltered from the wind, Flic en Flac is a fishing village growing into a vibey resort town on a long sandy beach with calm waters ideal for snorkelling, diving and romantic sunsets. Nearby Tamarin Bay is known for its dolphins seen from boat cruises, and then it’s a short hop to the natural beauty of the Black River Gorges or the urban centre of Port Louis. Sugar Beach is a classic plantationstyle resort on a long sandy beach looking into the sunset. This is five-star luxury with excellent kids’ clubs, varied water sports and even horse riding on the beach. Tamarina Boutique Hotel looks out over the island’s only surf beach to open Tamarin bay where dolphins can often be seen. As part of the Tamarina Golf Estate and Beach Club, the four-star hotel has free access to the 18-hole championship golf course and shuttles to Casela nature park. There are many more excellent resorts, boutique hotels and selfcatering options, so start exploring for a memorable island holiday that ticks several boxes on your bucket list.

unaBerry was founded by Héloïse Haupt upon her return from London, where she learned to master the art of classical French cuisine and patisserie at Le Cordon Bleu. She offers a range of celebration cakes, cupcakes, cookies, pièce montées and so much more. Héloïse shares her story with us. Q: How did your business start? A: A fter I returned from London, I knew that I wanted to do something that gave me joy and allowed me to be creative on a daily basis. One of my greatest pleasures is seeing the look on my clients’ faces when they come and collect their cakes. One of the most valuable skills I learned overseas was the ability to ice a cake in such a way that you could get a clean look and finish without having to compromise on taste or appearance, thereby offering my clients the best of both worlds. It just felt right to start my own business and LunaBerry was, therefore, founded in August 2015. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I decided to set up my business in Rietondale, a quiet residential area that I grew up in. The location is convenient for me as it’s central, and I’m familiar with the surroundings.
Q: How did you find your premises? A: Having returned to South Africa after completing my training in London, I was determined to set up my kitchen and started the hunt for the perfect spot. Luckily, I did not have to look far. My family had a garden flat on their property which seemed ideal for me to convert into a fully functional kitchen – and knowing the landlords, was also a big help! Q: Why are they ideally suited to your business? A: A s an individual baker, I was looking for a safe area to work from, with enough space for all my equipment, as well as easy access for clients and collections. Setting up a kitchen is an expensive operation and the fact that I don’t have a pre-determined lease or a landlord that will kick me out after a year, is amazing. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: There are a few businesses in the area: Toni’s Pizza (I am a huge fan), a coffee shop, as well as a boutique venue called Maison De Leo. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: The rental prices are reasonable compared to renting or leasing a premise in a shopping centre or a business park. It also suits me as my cakes and treats are all made to order, and I’m therefore not reliant on foot traffic or open to the general public unless an appointment has been made. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: Currently I’m limited to taking on between 10 to 15 orders per week,
given that I run the entire business as well as the baking by myself. I custom-make every cake by hand, ensuring I maintain direct quality over every order. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: I would love to grow LunaBerry and hopefully will be employing someone to assist me soon. The one thing I don’t want to compromise on, however, is the quality and personal service that I’m able to offer my clients. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, I have a website where clients can build and design their own cakes, as well as pre-order items from a set list of products available. Clients can also send in custom orders via forms on the website. I am also on Instagram (@lunaberry_za) and Facebook (@LunaBerry.za). Q: What’s your most popular item/ service? A: I am best known for my cakes. I specialise in buttercream cakes and my top sellers have to be either a chocolate or a vanilla cake. I can then customise the design and decorate the cake to suit my clients’ needs. I’m probably best known for my fresh floral and painted buttercream cakes.

Rabie plans national footprint of retirement villages Leading Western Cape-based developer Rabie Property Group is launching three new retirement villages in Cape Town within the next eight months and planning a national footprint of villages within five to 10 years

abie’s three new retirement villages, which will all be based on the life-right model, are to be launched under a new brand: Oasis Life. The first three Oasis Life villages will form part of Rabie’s existing mixed-use developments, which will offer residents extensive additional facilities right on their doorstep. The first Oasis Life village will be in the 128ha mixed-use Clara Anna Fontein Estate outside Durbanville in the Northern Suburbs of Cape Town, now being launched, followed by Oasis Life Burgundy Estate in March next year and Oasis Life Century City shortly thereafter. The first, Oasis Life Clara Anna Fontein, will comprise a total of 125 homes and an exclusive clubhouse consisting of a dining room, coffee bar, lounge, activity room, a meeting room and library, as well as primary health care facilities staffed by a registered nurse. Rabie CEO Leon Cohen says with people living longer and the current shortage of retirement options for people as they get older, they believe there is huge potential in this market for superior products that offer a really great lifestyle for residents. “The first three villages in Cape Town, which will be developed at a cost of around R2,5bn, are just the start. We’re also exploring opportunities in other major centres and plan to roll these out in the not too distant future.” The launch of Oasis Life follows the successful sell-out of Rabe’s Oasis Luxury Retirement Resort in Century City where all 376 sectional-title apartments were sold six months ahead of the sixth and final high-rise apartment block being completed.
