F
riday, 16 September, is Sunflower Day for The Sunflower Fund, which creates awareness and raises funds for people to join the South African Bone Marrow Registry. This enables people to be tested as potential donors, and there’s a 1:100,000 chance of being a match and saving the life of someone in need.

Since its inception, the event has raised over R6m which was donated to organisations that focus on youth upliftment. The first Chefs who Share gala was held in Cape Town and saw 14 acclaimed South African chefs working in seven teams, assisted by seven sommeliers, and creating seven different four-course menus for 252 guests for one night only. To date it has grown into a full event concept that now includes predinner evenings and other initiatives. This year, the event is coming to Joburg for the first time. “Like everything in life, this event has evolved and now we’re taking Chefs who Share onto Art Director: Leah de Jager Designers: Anja Bramley & Craig D’Oliveira Senior Sub-Editor: Mlungisi Mthembu Proofreader: Marana Brand Editorial Assistant: Lauren Albertyn Online Editor: Lauren Joubert
a bigger platform. It also means that we’re opening it up to a different audience so it can attract new people,” says Barbara. This year, eventgoers are spoiled for choice and can look forward to an art preview cocktail evening at The Maslow, which will give them an opportunity to have a sneak peek at the artwork that will be on auction on the gala evening. Also, in the lead up to the main gala, there will be three pre-dinners at three new participating hotels – the Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, The Maslow, and The Saxon – in association with Dom Pérignon, Moët & Chandon and Ruinart Champagne. “These three dinners will be more intimate than the gala and each will see an internationally acclaimed chef cook a once-off menu with a resident chef of the hotel,” adds Barbara. Then on Friday, 23 September, all the chefs will be working with the Veggie Box Initiative to cook for a community project that aims to feed 200 underprivileged schoolchildren. All of this will culminate with a charity gala on Saturday, 24 September, at the Johannesburg City Hall.
“Though the main gala event hasn’t changed much over the years, we now have 14 amazing chefs from around the world participating,” says Barbara. Chefs who Share may have a new home this year, but one thing remains, as Barbara says, “The key element is that this is an event that brings countries together, brings the nation together and shows what people can do when they work for one goal – achieving great things and raising big funds for charity.”
To secure tickets for the respective pre-dinners, and the culinary and lifestyle events taking place from 19 to 24 September, visit the Chefs who Share website or send email to tickets@chefswhoshare.com.

Spend some quality time with your furry best friend at Bark in Park WORDS: RITA-MARI LUDIKE

A
ll dog owners know and dread the disappointed look on their pup’s face when they leave the house without them. On Sunday, 18 September, you can make your canine friend happy and take a drive to Brooklyn Primary School’s Sports Ground for a day out. Bark in the Park is a new music festival and charity family fun day that aims to raise funds and awareness for a Tshwane pro-life animal shelter. We had a chat with multitalented radio presenter, Kriya Gangiah, about this project she is so passionate about. Q: How did Bark in the Park come about? A: Over the last few years for my birthday, instead of getting birthday gifts I asked friends and family to rather bring non-perishable foods, dog food or cash donations. From that, I decided that there is so much more that I can be doing than just a small birthday party. From this, the idea of Bark in the Park was born and last year at our inaugural event we raised R20,000. Q: Who are the brains behind the idea? A: This was always something that I wanted to do, but it would never be possible without the people around me. Danae Savvas is a true friend and someone who is an integral part of the event.
Of course, this event would not be possible without my amazing sponsors. When we open our doors, 100% of what we take in for the day goes to our chosen charity, which is all due to our sponsors. Q: What can people expect when attending Bark in the Park? A: People can expect a fun day out with dog lovers and their pooches, great food for you and your dog, craft stores, wine farms and a few sundowners with great music. Q: How will Monument Park Veterinary Clinic be involved? A: Monument Park is always our vet of choice, and they will be there on the day to make sure your pup is safe on the day, nice and cool and the vet will be on hand if you have any questions. Q: What stalls are you particularly excited about? A: Dogtails is my firm favourite. They have home-made dog treats that are all organic and very tasty. You can even share a treat with your pup.

SPECIAL PROJECT

Hands-on, yet simple Spring has sprung, so let’s get creative with fun, affordable DIY projects WORDS: LAUREN ALBERTYN
IMAGES: ISTOCK
S
pring has arrived with chirping birds and blossoming flowers. And it’s time to take on some DIY projects and spruce up your home with fun additions. Is your bathroom looking a bit outdated? Is your patio forlorn? Are you looking for affordable lighting? We’re willing to share some of our secrets!
Retro bathroom
Gone are the days when tiling or painting were your only options for your bathroom walls. Wallpaper is a trend that has become quite popular not only for bedrooms, studies or the kitchen, but for the bathroom too. If you’re looking for a bit of individuality, this is for you. Try a textured, 3-D design – you won’t be able to resist touching it – or a ’70s-inspired motif with geometrical shapes. Not only is the wallpaper easily replaceable, but it’s also very affordable.
Bold patio
We can already feel the beginnings of a hot summer, and who doesn’t love to spend time outdoors relaxing in the garden or lounging on the patio? Outdoor furniture can often look a bit too uniform and unoriginal. Sometimes all you need is a pop of colour to liven it up. Transform your
patio furniture with a fresh coat of paint in shades of indigo and teal, or alternatively add a few scatter cushions in fuchsia, cerise or chartreuse.
Subtle lighting
Now that the cold days are no longer, you don’t need harsh, spotlight-type lighting anymore. Try something subtle and affordable like fairy lights or Chinese lanterns. Fairy lights work well outside (however, make sure you buy the outside, waterproof kind) and inside. Both types work well draped and hung in a bedroom, study or even a children’s room.
USEFUL DIY TIPS: • It’s always a good idea to know how to use power tools. A short course comes in handy. • If you are hiring an expert to do the work, watch them work should you wish to repeat the project or do touch-ups at a later stage. • A well-maintained garden is one of the easiest and most cost-effective ways of increasing your property’s value, should you choose to sell it.

My business neighbourhood Cremalat Cheese provides Pretoria with imported Italian products WORDS: ZENA LE ROUX IMAGES: SUPPLIED
Neighbourhood In 1993, we set up small stalls at various markets in and around Joburg for the very first time. We soon expanded to the cold meat industry. Our first permanent establishment was in Kensington in a small, converted house. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: The Pretoria Deli was first opened at the Sunnyside Shopping Centre, and then we moved to Klaus Wasserthal in Sunnyside and during the 2010 Soccer World Cup, we decided to move to the Italian Club in Groenkloof. Q: How did you find your premises? A: Most of our customers are Italians and they were constantly asking us to open something at the Italian Club in order to be closer and integrated with the Italian community.
C
remalat Cheese is a company involved in the food industry, mainly importing Italian food such as cheeses, pasta, olive oil, cold meats, as well as local cheese manufacturing. Q: How did your business start? A: We (Claudio and Margaret Giustizieri) had the spontaneous idea of entering the world of entrepreneurship. We are both of Italian origin and extremely passionate about Italian food.
Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The Italian South African com munity are tightly connected and would always support each other. For this reason we truly believe that our deli in Groenkloof is strategically located. We are also close to many embassies which make up a large part of our clientele. The bulk of our customers are the diplomatic corps working in Pretoria from all over the world and we are extremely well supported by the local Pretorian community. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: T he rent ranges between R6,000 and R12,000 depending on the square metres and the specific location.
Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Club Sociale Italiano, Italian Club restaurant, the Virgin Active Groenkloof, The German Embassy and the Italian Bowls Association. Q: What is your shop footprint? A: The deli is only open on Fridays and Saturdays – for this reason we are quite busy with approximately 100 clients per day. We also do catering for special occasions and we deliver to restaurants on Wednesdays. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, we are going to revamp the delicatessen to increase our product ranges and to be open more days per week to meet the demands of our clients. We would also love to start presenting cooking schools, host more events, and wine and product tastings. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Our website has the ability to sell online, so we may make use of this more in future. Q: What’s your most popular item/service? A: T wo award-winning cheeses: Cremalat Gorgonzola Dolce Latte and the Cremalat Drunken (Ubriaco in Italian) Pecorino, as well as the imported products from Italy such a Parma ham, Grana Padano, pasta, Prosecco Bortolotti, wines and much more.

Analyse it PATRICK CAIRNS
Don’t be a danger to yourself A
ll successful investors spend a lot of time thinking about the balance between risk and reward. Investing in the stock market is the best example of this. Shares will always be a high-risk investment, but over time the returns they offer make this a risk worth taking. Few people, however, realise that some of the greatest risks to their money are not found in the market. A growing number of studies into behavioural finance are showing that the thing we should be most wary of when it comes to investing is our own poor decisionmaking. There is more and more research to suggest that human beings are hardwired to act irrationally with their money. For instance, we overestimate our own skill, and we tend to base decisions on superficial information. This lethal combination is what led many South Africans to hurry huge chunks of their money offshore back in December 2001 when the rand was at R12,45 to the dollar. When the currency came back to R6 to the dollar, however, they ended up losing a lot of money. Put another way, we tend to overreact when news is good, and we overreact when news is bad. We make decisions based on emotion rather than rational thinking. One of the simplest ways to avoid this is to always make investments for the long term. Once you’ve made a decision, be prepared to stick to it through shortterm ups and downs. Probably the most well-worn investment cliche is that it is time in the market that counts, not timing the market. Don’t try to anticipate when the market will go up or down, because the chances are not in your favour that you will get it right. Recent analysis by investment research firm Morningstar showed how true this is. In the 21 years between 1 August 1995 and 31 July 2016, the JSE showed annualised growth of 15,1%. However, an investor who missed just the best 75 days out of the 5,264 trading days during this period would have reduced their returns to zero.
Morningstar’s research showed that over the last 21 years there has been no 10-year period in which returns on the JSE have been negative
There is no way that any investor could have identified beforehand when those days would be, and often those very good days came after some rather poor ones. That is the nature of the market. It does not move in a straight line. The only sure way of capturing all those good days is therefore to make sure you are always invested. It might seem counterintuitive in times when the market is falling, but if you stick around long enough, you will be rewarded for taking that risk.

SA property sector increases T
he South African property sector is worth R5,8 trillion, according to results from the latest study from the Property Sector Charter Council, undertaken to determine the size of SA’s property sector. The sector’s size is R5,3 trillion with a further R520bn land officially zoned for commercial and residential development, the study states, using figures from the 2014/15 financial year. This is an increase of nearly R1 trillion since the end of 2010,
when the size of the South African property market was R4,9 trillion. Compiled by MSCI for the council and released in July, the study supplements the council’s SA Property Sector Economic Impact Report. It estimated the sector’s contribution to gross domestic product was R191,4bn in 2012 in terms of annual income and expenditure flows generated by the sector, and a R46,5bn contribution to the fiscus. Formal residential property still accounts for nearly three-quarters
of property owned in SA, and grew from an estimated R3 trillion at the end of 2010 to R3,9 trillion. For the first time, the study also considered informal residential property, although it has no value. It was quantified by the number of households provided by the Department of Human Settlements. Undeveloped urban land zoned for development remained unchanged around R520bn (1,1% of total land in SA).
Student accommodation as an investment buy There is substantial evidence within the current landscape that the private sector will become progressively more involved, because student housing projects in sub-Saharan Africa are not only viable, but are among the most attractive investments one can make on the continent PHILIP HILLMAN, HEAD: STUDENT HOUSING, JLL EMEA
Record sales and prices being achieved in Val de Vie Estate V acant plots, plot and plan units and now also office suites are being snapped up in sought-after Val de Vie Estate in the Paarl-Franschhoek Valley in the heart of the Cape Winelands. Since September 2014, a total of 350 sales transactions at a total value of close to R1,141bn were concluded in Val de Vie Estate,
which has just been rated by New World Wealth as the top residential estate in South Africa for 2016.
A recent sale by Pam Golding Properties in Val de Vie saw a Phase 1 stand of 2,500m 2 situated on the polo fields fetch a high of R9m. This represents R3,600/m 2 , a top price for the estate. Surina du Toit, area manager,
Pam Golding Properties Paarl, Franschhoek and Wellington, says, “Some of our buyers are tenants or existing homeowners on the estate wishing to upgrade and build a brand-new contemporary home. Others are relocating from various regions such as Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal, with the balance being investors making lucrative buy-to-let acquisitions.”
Hartbeespoort becoming favourite area for primary residence
H
artbeespoort, an area popular with the leisure market due to its vast natural resources, is becoming a hot spot for people choosing to make the area their permanent home. Harry Nicolaides, CEO, Century 21, says, “We have seen a steady increase in the demand for property by city slickers and holidaymakers who are now choosing to live in
Hartbeespoort. This is due to the lifestyle that the area offers, as well as the fact that it is only a short commute to work in Johannesburg North, Pretoria and Brits.” He says that the area has rapidly expanded in the last 10 years to include major retail shopping centres, schools and upgraded infrastructure, adding to its popularity with permanent
residents. Since 2010, the number of houses sold in the area has increased by close to 65%, with the average sale price increasing marginally. Hartbeespoort is known for fishing and boating due to the dam, but the area is also popular with nature lovers, hikers and golfers, and offers something for those in aviation. It is also a favourite for game and agricultural farmers and wildlife lodges.

I love living in Lynnwood because of its diversity. It is close to malls, good English schools and a variety of restaurants. We also have nature trails, which gets the kids outdoors.
About the area L
Lynnwood is well located adjacent the N4 highway that forms its northern border. The suburb is a few minutes’ drive away from the N1 to the west and is bordered by the well-known Atterbury Road to the south and main roads Rubida Street and Rossouw Street in the east. Lynnwood extends to Lynnwood Ridge, Lynnwood Manor and Lynnwood Park. One of the major attractions of the area is its proximity to an array of public and private primary and high schools, as well as the University of Pretoria and other higher education and training institutions. The suburb is also home to the Alkantrant Library. This community library is one of the best commended

Lynnwood is a tranquil suburb with flourishing gardens, tall trees, well-maintained pavements and the Moreleta Spruit running through parts of it. It is a friendly suburb where residents can become members of many community action groups that aim to create a safe and pleasant neighbourhood. With no shortage of medical, recrea tional, shopping and sporting facilities, Lynnwood is popular among residents of all ages. The latest property trends indicate, however, an increase in the number of buyers in the 18 to 35 and 36 to 49 age groups.
Agent commentary Q: What kinds of properties are available and who is buying them? A: Lynnwood, also known as the Old East, offers all types of properties – from very old houses with big stands and subdivided stands with smaller homes, to complexes, apartments catering for more affordable accommodation, and big modern, upmarket, double-storey homes. The average house sales vary from R2,06m up to R4,25m, and rentals vary between R13,000 and R28,000. The suburb is ideal for young professionals who need to be close to highways and popular schools. There are also many shopping centres to choose from. Lynnwood offers a choice of retirement villages located in a peaceful, quiet neighbourhood while still close to all amenities.
Q: What are Lynnwood’s attractions to buyers? A: Lynnwood is a leafy, tree-filled residential area with quiet, wide streets. Lynnwood boasts a wide range of homes – from large established family homes with beautiful gardens, to modern apartments and retirement villages. Shopping malls in the area include Lynnwood Bridge, Gift Acres, Glenfair and Lynnridge mall. Popular recreational attractions include the Atterbury Theatre, various cosy coffee shops and top restaurants, a diversity of gyms and health and beauty salons. Educational institutions include Laerskool Lynnwood, Lynnwood Ridge Primary School, Die Hoërskool Menlopark, St Alban’s College and Varsity College.
Q: What is currently happening in the area? A: Lynnwood is one of the most sought-after areas in Pretoria, housing the best schools in the city as well as the University of Pretoria. Easy access to the Gautrain and main routes enables homeowners to make their daily travels much easier. Besides all the shopping centres in Lynnwood, shopping hubs like Menlyn and Brooklyn are also located within short driving distance. The local community policing forum is reputable and active in the area. Recently, a variety of low-density projects were completed, which enables younger people to buy property close to their work and schools. Demand is, however, still higher than availability.
