Gather round When it comes to weekend meals, Sunday lunch is my favourite family tradition
O
ne of the things I’ve come to enjoy about being older is giving credit where it’s due, especially to my parents. Something that my mother taught me well was mealtime etiquette. As a family we always sat around the table for every meal. It might’ve exhausted us as kids and teenagers, but now I can see what it did for us as adults. It helped us establish traditions and brought us closer together. My mom taught me how to lay a table the proper way with all the necessary cutlery (you know, two forks, two different-sized knives, soup spoon, dessert spoon, side plate on the left-hand side and glass on the top right), and how to fold napkins in pretty shapes (I’m good at the open flower design). Sunday lunch was an extra-special event as it would be our first meal of the week. So when I find myself seated at Pierneef à La Motte Restaurant sharing the Sunday family lunch with my mom and family, it feels nostalgic and wonderous. The restaurant decor is elegantly homely – my favourite being the massive light fitting made up of hanging blue and white crockery. The table setting is exquisite and brings back memories.
and what I term “elegant nourishment” – like a first-class comforting roast. Some of the dishes were roast pork belly, old-fashioned pumpkin tart, potato and pecorino dauphinoise, baked aubergine with buttermilk and pomegranate, and the raspberry and rose frozen slice, among other dainties for dessert. Of course, the meal can be paired with the award-winning La Motte wine list too. This is the real communion of life: sharing a beautiful meal with the people I cherish most.

t first glance you may be forgiven for thinking The Three Ducks is simply a coffee shop. However, when you walk into the restaurant you’re pleasantly surprised to find that it is more than that. The Three Ducks, also called Les Trois Canards in French, has a cosy atmosphere and on most days plays French music in the background adding to its authenticity.
The idea behind the Sunday lunch is just another way that the estate acknowledges tradition and the sentiment of family get-togethers. This is followed through in the main course being served to share at the table, so there’s passing of dishes just like at home. The starter is a plated dish of your choice like the roasted carrot soup, Buffalo yoghurt and cauliflower dumplings. The food is outstanding

creative presentation of each dish, and he loves to see his customers smile. The menu changes monthly to keep the guests interested, and careful attention goes into every dish prepared. For starters, I enjoyed the prawn paradise with avocado, smoked salmon and prawns, a wonderful combination complemented by the sweet taste of melon.
Keep an eye out for the fountain with three taps in the courtyard area, the colourful paintings inside and a wine cellar with over 100 bottles of wine in the inner fine dining area of the restaurant.
When it came to mains, the soft and tender duck confit with creamy lentils accompanied by sides of hand-cut seasonal vegetables was a winner. My meal was then perfectly completed with a classic creme brulee offering a sweet melt-in-your-mouth experience.

ith Banting clearing the way for good fat, many new theories have followed closely in its path. One of those being that coconut oil helps with weight loss. The idea that coconut oil is only for skin care has long since been forgotten and replaced by heaps of recipes incorporating coconut oil in cooking and baking. Die-hard “coco-nuts” swear that having at least one to two tablespoons of coconut oil a day keeps the doctor away. Here’s why.
Health benefits
Aside from coconut oil being used in various home-made skin and hair remedies, it is also said to help with obesity, seizures, blood cholesterol and brain function in patients with Alzheimer’s. Coconut oil is easier to digest and isn’t easily stored as fat. There are also those who claim that it is antimicrobial and antifungal, which is helpful to those suffering from gum disease and tooth decay.
Drink it warm
Coconut oil can easily be added to warm drinks as a substitute for milk. If you are lactose intolerant or vegan this is also a great, healthy substitute for dairy. Coconut oil does not dilute the flavour of your coffee, as substitutes such as almond milk would do. Coconut oil also has a much longer shelf life than milk.
Coconut Oil Coffee Creamer and Sweetner Ingredients:
• ¾ cup of soft coconut oil • ½ cup of honey • 1 tsp cinnamon powder • 1 tsp pure vanilla extract • 1 Tbsp cocoa powder Combine all the ingredients in a bowl and whisk until everything has been mixed thoroughly. Store in a glass jar or pour into an ice cube tray and refrigerate for individual creamer servings. To make coffee, warm up your blender with hot water and then pour it out. Add one cup of coffee and a tablespoon of creamer and blend on high for one minute. Pour your coffee in a cup and enjoy.

eimagine Urbanism is Africa’s premier architecture and urban design conference hosted by The Urban Design Institute of South Africa. Not only does this conference give attendees the opportunity to understand the threedimensional form and space in cities and settlements, it emphasises the value urban design holds for African inner cities. If you are an urban design enthusiast, an architectural or spatial design professional, an architecture student or a town planner, there’s a seat at the think-tank table for you to join in on the conversation.
The conference
With the pivotal concept of reimagine, the conference tackles problems related to the inner city head-on. The conference includes specialist presentations, honest debates, tours of selected inner-city sites in Gauteng and workshops to strategise solutions to better city centres. This three-day event will take place from 13 to 15 June at Freedom Park memorial venue in Pretoria. This venue was selected for its gorgeous views, beautiful architecture and significance in South Africa’s democracy – the perfect backdrop for pushing ideas beyond preconceptions.
Speakers
Keynote speaker Jeff Shumaker, the chief urban designer of New York, will be teaching a masterclass to students. Shumaker’s presentation will include
an overview of the current urban design initiatives in New York City as well as an interactive design workshop to conceptualise the design of a New York block. Other keynote speakers include the likes of Maria Fernanda Derntl, Tony Asare, Jack van der Merwe, Professor Amira Osman and more.
City tours
Attendees will be able to discover the city on ZingCO (zingclub. co.za) solar bikes – economical and environmentally friendly electric scooters complete with 250W motor. Inner-city tours in Pretoria will be led by Pretoria Street Photography (pretoriastreetphotography.co.za), and participants will be given the opportunity to observe the environment and to conceptualise a photographic narrative while documenting their surroundings. In Joburg, Gerald Garner of Joburg Places ( joburgplaces. com), will lead a three-hour inner city tour including a mixture of significant historical buildings, as well as current regeneration happening in Johannesburg.

oodhill offers magnificent views and modern living in a secure environment with a country feel. The suburb consists mainly of The Woodhill Residential Estate and Country Club with more than 850 upmarket residences and is situated between De Villebois Mareuil Drive to the south, Atterbury Road to the east, Garsfontein Road to the west and Solomon Mahlangu Drive to the north. eet and Eat is a brand created by Clarissa van Emmenes that aims to create and indulge in unique food experiences and trends by hosting quarterly themed pop-up foodie events throughout Pretoria. It also specialises in food styling for blogs, shoots and events. Q: How did your business start? A: I run a blog called I Love Pretoria, and I often get a lot of queries regarding food articles and styling. That’s why I decided
to start a business with food being the main focus. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Meet and Eat’s premises are located in Pretoria East in Elardus Park – an older area with a lot of character and a bit more peace and quiet than the bustling hubs in the inner city or in Joburg. It is also situated between Centurion, Joburg and Pretoria, which makes it easy for our collaborators and clients to come and go as they please without having to drive too far or wide. It also gives us easy access to venues in developing areas of Pretoria such as Silver Lakes, Hazeldean and Shere, as well as Centurion, Irene, Midrand and Joburg due to its close proximity to the major highways. Q: How did you find your premises? A: It was a no-brainer as the space was made available to us. It serves as the perfect regular meeting spot for our collaborators while also providing us with a comfortable, beautiful open area in which to work. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: It allows for a short commute time to almost anywhere, low to no technology costs and lower overhead costs (with no lease to pay) and increased productivity.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Our neighbours are residents of the area and small business owners who have been living in the area for decades,
which means that the environment is amicable and peaceful. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: Due to the fact that the area is quite old, it does not have excessive rental prices. Prices normally range from R4,000 for a residential space, or R20,000 for a commercial space (in an office block, for instance). Q: What is your shop footprint? A: We communicate and collaborate mainly through email, which means that our business’s footprint is minimal. At most the premises will have eight people going in and out throughout the day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We have exciting expansion plans that include international events and styling, as well as the launch of a book, which will feature ideas for food-related events and gatherings, including recipes and styling ideas. Our services are currently available in South Africa and New Zealand. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Our business relies on our online presence and we are currently optimising our website to include an online shop, which will stock gourmet food items, including coffee, tea and gourmet gift boxes. Q: What’s your most popular item/service? A: Our most popular service thus far has been food styling for photographers (styled shoots) and companies doing product or lifestyle shoots.
