Dullstroom Here’s what’s happening in property in the area WORDS: BETSIE LOOCK-VAN DER MERWE IMAGES: FRANZ RABE, DULLSTROOM ACCOMMODATION & SUPPLIED

D

ullstroom is a small town nestled in the Steenkampsberg Plateau in Mpumalanga’s Highlands Meander. Indicated on the map as a tiny dot halfway between Pretoria and the Kruger National Park, Dullstroom might not be a big town, but it’s a town with a big heart and lots of soul. Established in 1883, Dullstroom is rich in history and character. During the Second Anglo Boer War (1899 – 1902) the entire village was destroyed and after the war, it was rebuilt by some of its earlier inhabitants who returned to this beautiful landscape of rolling hills and grasslands, crystal-clear streams and lakes, blue skies and greenery.

Dullstroom is like South Africa’s own Scotland; it's mystical, misty, dreamy, relaxing, recharging and has rocky views. Life in Dullstroom encompasses wood fires, wine or beer, earthy food and long discussions with special friends surrounded by the majestic scenery.

In 1912, one man’s fleeting thought while he was fishing in the town river unexpectedly changed Dullstroom’s future. J Gurr, the then postmaster of the nearby town of Lydenburg (53km away), caught a fish resembling the trout species. The idea was born and four years later the first fingerlings were introduced to the local waters. Today, Dullstroom, now also called Emnotweni, is recognised as the top fly-fishing destination in South Africa. The Highlands Meander’s Trout Triangle can be found between the towns of Dullstroom, Machadodorp (60km) and Belfast (33km). With Gauteng’s big cities, Pretoria and Johannesburg, only about a two-and-ahalf-hour drive away and less than two hours away from Nelspruit, Dullstroom

KAREN MEYER, SECOND HOME RESIDENT

is a popular holiday and weekend home for Gauteng and Mpumalanga’s fly-fishing enthusiasts and nature lovers, with some of them eventually moving to Dullstroom permanently. Even though the town’s flourishing tourism industry is to a great extent built upon the exotic fish, trout and picturesque countryside vistas are not the only attractions. Dullstroom draws many non-fishing visitors. On the weekends, the main street is bustling with people enjoying the local cuisine and ambience of the many restaurants and pubs. In winter, mist and cold are part and parcel of the package, but nothing can quite compare to the specific Dullstroom experience: crackling log fires and sips of the finest whisky in Wild about Whisky – a pub with the largest collection of whiskies in the Southern Hemisphere. Even though the town has many art, craft, decor and curio shops, care is taken to keep it local and authentic. The small countryside village look and feel has been preserved. New developments are undeniably taking place, with a number of leisure estates, including a golf estate, having been developed in recent years, but they’re located well outside the village. Developers are keen to preserve the secluded atmosphere that is a key attraction for potential permanent residents.

My business neighbourhood InBloom in Menlo Park offers women a selection of items to add to their wardrobes, beauty bags and homes WORDS: ZENA LE ROUX

nBloom, a popular boutique studio, offers women of various ages the opportunity to fall in love with flattering, stylish, high-quality products from local and international creators. The collection is carefully chosen by owner Madeline Nortje. Q: How did your business start? A: InBloom started as a blog in order to bring my signature style and ideas about life, motherhood, food and fashion to my friends and followers. From a blog, it grew into a small business offering women specialised wardrobe and shopping services, with a few of my favourite items available to order. “Life meets style” became the company slogan when InBloom moved into its home on 13th Street in Menlo Park, in August 2015. We’re trying to really live up to the vision and idea of being a one-of-a-kind style studio, offering women a carefully curated selection of items to add to their wardrobes, beauty bags and homes. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: I love the Old East of Pretoria. The communities are established and my vision for InBloom was to be in a centre where people can park right in front of my door.

Q: How did you find your premises? A: I asked around, drove around and scouted for many years before the spot opened up – right at the time when I needed to expand. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: From here I can reach my target audience – women between 25 and 55, who are in charge of the household shopping – directly. They’re fashion-conscious and operate in this area every day. It’s also close to good primary schools, high schools, restaurants and a Spar.

running. We offer most of our favourite items for sale on the site. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: It varies from season to season. Last season our Fenn Collection Bags were definitely the most popular. This season our own InBloom and August48 ranges have been doing really well.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: To the one side, I have Albie of Woodstock Floors and, on the other side, I have Dezzi of The Gallery on 13th.

SEE FOR YOURSELF: InBloom 082 629 3919 inbloom.co.za

Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: We pay approximately R345/m2, all inclusive. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: It varies. Anything from 15 to 100 people come into my shop each day. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, we’ve just created a new leg of the company called the InBloom Collective. Many exciting services will be added. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: Yes, our new online store is up and

Thrifty decor A decorating expert offers inexpensive ways to transform your home WORDS: ANNE SCHUAFFER IMAGE: ISTOCK

Neighbourhood

T

he day you walk into your home and think it looks tired is the day you need to breathe new life into it. There are so many things you can do without leaving your home or picking up the phone and others that are either DIY or very cost-effective. Decorator Morgan Fry of Thrift tells us how to “be brave” with decor.

Home shopping

Walk into each room and remove at least one item of furniture or frippery (items you no longer like or use). Look hard because when an item has been in your home for a long time, you barely notice it anymore. And don’t panic if it has sentimental value – you don’t have to get rid of it. Just put it away for now. You’ve given yourself some clean space in the rooms and that negative space is the start of a transformation. Now look at those discarded items and rethink them. Is there anything there which would work in another room? Perhaps it needs to be sanded down and painted? Does it need a new frame? Play with these pieces, not necessarily immediately, and if you no longer have room for them in your life, sell or donate them. Less is generally more.

Colour me

Colour is a major game-changer, whether it’s walls, floors or artwork. As a loose guide, remember the 60:30:10 ratio (predominant colour should cover

about 60% of the room, usually painted walls; secondary colour should be 30% percent, usually window treatments, upholstery, rugs; and accent colour 10%, artwork, ceramics, accessories). A splash of paint or a pop of wallpaper are great for transforming a room. Stand in the room with a handful of swatches and pick out colours you really like which feature in the carpet, a painting or something else dominant. Play before committing. You can create a single feature wall of a plain strong colour, stripe the wall with even or uneven bands (do it yourself with masking tape and paint), or even choose a photograph – your own or one you’ve bought online – and get it enlarged to fit that feature wall (apply it like wallpaper) or, of course, use wallpaper (hunt down the sales). Wallpaper can also look superb behind open bookcases or shelves.

Hang it up

Artwork can also have an impact and it doesn’t need to be an original piece. It can be interesting photographs of botanicals, inexpensive prints purchased online or even something abstract you might be brave enough to try. Mirrors can be as equally impressive as artwork, particularly if they have wonderful old frames or are really large. You can lean a mirror against a wall, reflecting the floor or ceiling, to enlarge the space or reflect greenery outdoors.

www.prestigeprop.co.za | prestigeprop@mweb.co.za

Upholstery art

Fabric and upholstery can be expensive (trawl through the fabric waste centres), but much like a feature wall, choose a single chair in the room and make this your eye-catching feature. If you’re brave enough, go bold and bright or even a little crazy and have a single print on the seat of a plain chair. Make it a chair-cum-artwork.

Window dressing

Windows treated differently can change a room – swap out your short curtains for a floor-to-ceiling one, or replace curtains with a fabric roller blind, wood Venetian blinds or old shutters (hunt them down at junk shops). Concentrate on the textures here – if you don’t need to block anything out, go thin and soft with muslin or voile.

TOP TIP: • Swapping out lamp shades is an easy way to spruce up an old look. • Use bright carpet tiles of different colours in a children’s room to create a chequerboard effect or make your own design. • Inexpensive rugs in bold colours and designs can be used to demarcate areas within a room. • Generally, bigger is better and bolder – remember scale.
