hile sitting with my back to a heater modelled like an elegant bed of fire under an artist’s doll crafted from metal, I cannot help but admire the interior of Kream. With scores of eccentric and traditional sculptures and paintings gracing the walls and elegant light fittings amid a scatter of greenery, Kream is one of the most gorgeous fine-dining restaurants I’ve been to.

design, Kream boasts a menu that would have most foodies in rapture. Paging through it, I find that it only gets better as I go. Soon after taking my seat, I’m offered a choice of freshly baked bread with an array of delectable spreads. Each mouthful is crafted to smooth perfection and offers individual zings of taste as I scan the menu in front of me. Before I know it, one of the managers approaches my table to tell me about the eclectic selection of specials they have for the day – and they’re all as wonderful as I’d imagined. I am caught between the tantalising options on the menu and the promise of greatness as described by the knowledgeable manager. Of course, I eventually find my perfect match and end up being taken aback by the high-end quality on my plate.
Mouthwateringly crisp spring chicken marinated in lemon and herbs with skinny fries and a scattering of veggies – each bite more sizzling and delightful than the one that went before. After finishing my meal, I am invited to enjoy a palette cleanser consisting of an exquisite sorbet that tickles my taste buds. The bite-sized combination of lemon and herb flavours in a refreshing sorbet is enough to convince me that this restaurant has everything down to a T. For more than 100 years, the Van der Byl family, who owns the farm, has strived to maintain its authenticity in an increasingly urban environment. There they serve what was originally a golfer’s drink: a Brown Cow is made with Coke and full-cream milk, a White Cow with ginger beer and milk, and a Green Cow with cream soda and milk. While technically not a float, an ice-cold cow is one of the most refreshing pick-me-ups around.

Step into Jam and Daisies – a contemporary country-style café with a touch of vintage in Lange Street – to enjoy a garden dining experience with a personal touch. Megan and Elaine Olsen opened this charming spot in 2011 to create a quiet environment in which to unwind. They also cater for groups, whether it be a bridal or baby shower, book club or office outing and will take care of all the details from the flowers to the place mats to the serviettes. Treat yourself to the Cream Soda Float decorated with strawberries, hundreds and thousands, and sprigs of mint. It is beautifully presented and really is as delicious as it sounds.

7Boxes in Melville is a shopping centre with a difference. Built entirely from shipping containers, the aim of this quirky retail development is to empower owners of small businesses by providing them with affordable temporary retail spaces where they can test out their business ideas. Mandy Shave, group marketing manager: Citiq property developers, says that the feedback from the launch of 27Boxes has been overwhelming: “The response from the public and the media has far exceeded our expectations.” Claire du Preez, a current 27Boxes tenant, says that Impressed, her juicing business, was originally based on a pop-up model where she operated on weekends only at various markets and events. “27Boxes is my first step towards a permanent retail spot as start-up entrepreneur,” she says. Impressed sells brightly coloured cold-pressed raw fruit and vegetable juices, and their aim is to make juicing a part of everyday life. Claire says her experience at 27Boxes so far has been inspiring. “The imagination of the neighbouring tenants and their unique offerings add to our everyday experience as vendors.”
Jacques Laubscher from The Kraal design gallery says his involvement in the initiative is an extension of his great love for Melville. “When we saw 27Boxes being built, we knew that this would be our opportunity to get actively involved in this environment that we like so much,” he says. “We feel 27Boxes has the potential to completely change and open up Melville to new avenues, different perceptions and undiscovered opportunities.” The Kraal hosts exhibitions by hand-picked designers with a new one launching every four months. Angela Goliath from Woodiz, a fashion-accessory brand, sells specialist items such as eyewear, bow ties, caps, cufflinks and watches all made from wood. She says 27Boxes provides her with an amazing platform to showcase her brand. “We have brilliant, inspiring entrepreneurs around us, all hustling and working together to showcase local talent that would otherwise not have been seen.” Half a container can be rented for as little as R3,000 a month (excluding VAT), though there is currently a six-month waiting list.

ass personalisation has been a growing trend for many years. As customers become more aware of their options and specific in their tastes, they are no longer content with the same five items in a store that are available to everyone else. There is a desire for objects and pieces that speak to the owner’s individuality, but at the same time people are less and less likely to make things themselves. And though there’s been a resurgence in heritage crafts like crocheting, sewing and even taxidermy, few people would be able or willing to make their own furniture. In a recent Bain survey, respondents stated that they were willing to pay 20% more for products that were customised to meet their tastes. And as online retail becomes more and more popular, the trend towards such customisation is growing. The design brand TOG, for example, was launched with exactly this in mind. It creates ‘naked’ products and then allows buyers to customise them online or select a professional customiser to do it on their behalf. In South Africa, Amoq furniture is on a similar track with their open-top table legs. These allow users to take any flat surface and turn it into a bespoke table. As technology catches up with our desire to be different, we’ll see more and more brands allowing customers to make their mark on their homeware. After all, why just keep up with the Joneses when it’s just as easy (and infinitely more interesting) to set yourself apart?

How does a suburb with its origins in a dusty four-way stop grow into one of the fastest-growing commercial and residential hubs in the greater Sandton area? The secret may be in its name. With easy access routes off the William Nicol Drive, Witkoppen Road and the N1 highway, Fourways’ location is extremely convenient, whether you need to nip into the city for work or pack your bags for a weekend away in the Magaliesberg or Hartebeespoort. Tracey loves The Peach Café on Camdeboo Farm, where you can pick your own fruit and enjoy the famous wood-fired pizza, while Lloyd says he loves exploring the various microbreweries in the area. Copperlake Brewing Co. is one of his favourites: grab some delicious sharing platters and then test out its Taster Tray, featuring eight locally brewed beers. The Steamworks gastropub is another great option: take in the impressive décor, sip on a few cocktails and enjoy a meal with some friends.
Security
If you’re looking for secure living, Fourways is ideal. Choose from high-density apartment complexes, townhouse developments, housing estates or lifestyle estates like Dainfern – all of which offer a level of safety and security that’s become a priority for many Joburg residents. KINGFISHER PARK INITIATIVE The Kingfisher Park initiative was sparked off by animal-loving Paulien Swanepoel, an estate agent for Adrienne Hersch’s Olivedale branch. Teaming up with Pat Amerseder of the Fourways Park Development Association, the initiative looks to run a campaign to get the community more involved with the park. Exploiting the vast potential starts with a weekly clean-up of the pet-friendly park. Adrienne Hersch Properties has generously sponsored these clean-ups for the next two months. Kingfisher Park is close to the hearts of many in the community, from dog-lovers and families to skateboard enthusiasts alike. any people aspiring to own property put it off because they believe that investing in property requires a great deal of money. However, property unit trusts make it possible to invest in more than one property without being very rich or even taking out a home loan. Ricardo Teixeira, COO: BDO Wealth Advisors, says the benefits of investing in a property unit trust are liquidity, the opportunity to invest in properties such as shopping malls and office blocks typically reserved for institutional investors, and the fact that it is a low-effort investment. He explains that, because they are listed on the JSE, investors may sell shares in a property unit trust even if the property itself is not being sold and the shares can therefore be transferred provided there are willing buyers at the ruling market price. “Investors could have access to an investment spread across sectors and in different locations for a capital
investment of as little as R500 per month or a R10,000 lump sum. It is a low-effort investment as independent management structures take care of processes, such as rental collection and maintenance,” says Teixeira. Nadir Thokan, spokesperson: Pioneer Wealth Managers, says property unit trusts provide investors with the highest form of protection as they are highly regulated investment vehicles. He says the management and selection of underlying property portfolios are done by expert fund managers equipped with the necessary resources to consistently identify the best available opportunities. “They offer investors the opportunity to retain the best investment talent who allocate capital to the best opportunities within the listed property market and provide access to the asset class without the hassle and costs of physically managing a property portfolio. The best way to gain exposure to a number of property investments through a single point
of entry is therefore to invest in a listed property unit trust. Thanks to increased globalisation, JSElisted property companies also have significant exposure to offshore property investment opportunities, thus allowing investors to benefit from global opportunities rather than local opportunities only,” he says. Neil Stuart-Findlay, portfolio manager: Investec Property Equity Fund, says property unit trusts allow everyone to invest in properties that ordinarily may have been beyond their means. He explains that property equity unit trusts allow those who have limited capital resources to gain exposure to commercial real estate. “The minimum requirement for investing in a property equity unit trusts is less than the requirements for buying a residential property. Historically, the sector has delivered inflation-beating returns aided by the underlying yield and growing income stream,” he says.

t is difficult not to feel fortunate to live in a modern world where healthcare is sophisticated, travel is easy and technology simplifies so much. We have come an enormously long way since 150 years ago when penicillin did not exist, overseas travel meant months on board a ship and Thomas Edison had not yet invented the electric light bulb. This is a world in which having even a little bit of money gives us access to a lot more than anybody could have dreamed of before the turn of the last century. That is a great blessing, but it also brings with it a very large challenge. Having access to so much means that there is no end to the things on which we can spend our money. We are a world of consumers, and we are encouraged to consume more at almost every turn.

Q: How did you find the property? A: I searched for properties online on Private Property. I also looked at what was on offer in the property listings of weekend newspapers.
As South Africans, we have a big problem in this regard. Our savings rate of 15,4% of the GDP is among the worst in the world. This is not because we don’t earn enough or our cost of living is too high. In China, earnings are lower but their savings rate is 50% of the GDP. In Australia, where the cost of living is much higher, the savings rate is 22,5% of the GDP. A big part of our problem is that we are too easily seduced into debt. Household debt as a percentage of household income in South Africa is now at 80%. We are borrowing more than we are saving. That may mean that we have money to spend in the short term, but will be far poorer for it in the long term. We are making the wrong choices with our money.
We believe that the more we are able to buy, the richer we are, and so we equate income with wealth. However, the truth is that being wealthy is not about how much you spend. Rather, it is about how much you are able to save
In The Millionaire Next Door, authors Thomas J Stanley and William D Danko point out that the rich are not the ones who make fancy lifestyle choices and spend on assets that don’t appreciate. They spend less than they earn and get more pleasure from owning assets that grow in value like stocks, property and private businesses than from displaying a high-consumption lifestyle. That doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t enjoy life, but rather that you should only spend what you can afford and more importantly save for yourself first. Anything else is really just stealing from the future you to pay for your current pleasure.

A: I totally love that Lonehill has lovely parks – and that the people in the neighbourhood are always walking, running and cycling. retoria students are looking forward to the completion of Eastwood Village, a new R125m apartment-style residence in Arcadia Street that will provide accommodation for more than 500 students from January 2016. Naledi Ledwaba, a 23-year-old student living in Arcadia, says that, given the shortage of student accommodation in the area, she loves the concept of a high-end residence less than a kilometre from the University of Pretoria that will cayter for the advanced needs of the students. “On-campus residences don’t have capacity for the high volumes of students being admitted to universities and communes are becoming an increasingly unattractive option. Students are excited to have an improved version of the on-campus residences that is less restrictive but still provides an environment conducive to studying,” she says. Naledi says Arcadia is a great neighbourhood for Eastwood Village as it is close to the University of Pretoria, is peaceful and homely and has great shopping centres in the vicinity. She calls the new securityfocused residence a better version of Urban Nest, a student residence in Arcadia which is currently a hit with students and their parents. Tumelo Rasebopye, a 25-year-old student living in Sunnyside, says that the fact that Eastwood Village will cater solely for students, will make
it an environment where they could pursue their studies successfully. The in-house study rooms will do away with worries about safety as students won’t have to walk home late at night after studying in the library. Eastwood Village will have gym facilities, a canteen with convenient payment methods – such as using a student card – and uncapped Wi-Fi. This type of modern student accommodation forces developments and service providers in the area to improve their standards and facilities, thus rejuvenating the area. Craig McMurray, CEO: Respublica, the developer of Eastwood Village, says the group aims to alleviate the shortage of suitable accommodation around Pretoria and has designed Eastwood Village to nurture a vibrant student community. The residence is Respublica’s fifth purpose-built apartment-style student residence and will comprise 78 apartments, a canteen, recreation rooms, a gym, a computer laboratory and study rooms. “Eastwood Village will ofer all the modern amenities students need, including access to Wi-Fi and an integrated residence-life programme to help them ease into their new life away from home.” He says the residence has a range of upmarket accommodation options to meet the needs of diverse personal preferences and budgets, and bookings are now open to students seeking accommodation for next year.

he Wilds Lifestyle and Security Estate is situated right in the centre of some of the largest and most deluxe and soughtafter estates in Pretoria East. The estate is filled with beautiful lushgardened homes in six sub-estates, which include Leopard’s Den, Elephant Hills, Rhino Ridge and Buffalo Creek. With the scarcity of available homes in Pretoria, The Wilds’ new development, Lion’s Head, is tugging at the heartstrings of buyers. Its newly built homes and building packages are once again proving to be a strong driver of demand. The Wilds ensures residents’ safety with strict double-access control at the main gate, further security at the entrance gates to each sub-estate, high-tech security cameras and security patrol cars. A double-storey home in Lion’s Head is currently selling for more than R4,5m. Some stands are 1,100m2 to 1,440m2 in size with homes measuring 450m2 to 500m2. Each has four or five bedrooms, several bathrooms, large living rooms opening onto a patio with a braai area, two or more automated garages and a beautifully landscaped garden. Among the other options at The Wilds sell at around R3m each and Lion’s Head offers townhouses for about R1,2m each and stands measuring just over 1,000m2 each for an average price of R1,2m.
