or years students and music enthusiasts have been counting on the ever-so-quirky Arcade Empire not only to entertain, but also to serve as a great platform for local music. We asked Arcade Empire team member Tanje van Wyk to tell us more about what makes it such a great place to hang out at. Q: How did Arcade Empire come about? A: Six years ago, Robert Pereira threw a few parties all around Pretoria. One of the venues he used a few times ended up becoming Arcade Empire after Robert and Etienne Ehlers decided to take the plunge and fill the void for performance venues in Pretoria. Along the way the rest of the crew – Rudolf Przybylski, Telani van der Walt, Tanje van Wyk and Kyle Cancella – came on board to add their skills and great vibes to the venue.

hen it comes to wine, nothing is quite as proudly South African as a great Pinotage. As South Africa’s signature red wine grape, Pinotage was first grown here in 1925 as a cross between Pinot Noir and Cinsaut (Hermitage), and is a growing favourite among oenophiles worldwide. Fast-forward 90-odd years from its creation and Pinotage once again takes centre stage at the Pinotage on Tap Festival happening on Saturday, 20 August, at Val Bonne Country Estate in Modderfontein. Since its first year, the Pinotage on Tap festival has become an annual favourite with South African wine lovers. Taking place in Joburg, Durban, and Cape Town, the event aims to showcase Diemersfontein’s delicious Pinotage, which is, unsurprisingly, available on tap during the event. Twelve years ago, a young Diemersfontein winemaker decided to use a stainless-steel barrel instead of an oak one to mature the Pinotage grapes, resulting in the now well-loved South African red wine – one that he couldn’t have known would go on to have an entire series of festivals dedicated to it. Every year, our Halloween party just keeps on getting better and the level of fun at that party is just too high not to pick that as our favourite. Q: What do most people not know about Arcade Empire? A: That we have a charity cause that we support called Help the Homeless Homies. We have fed and clothed quite a few homeless Pretoria locals with this project. It’s amazing to be able to give back and we really encourage everybody to contribute in any way they can. Q: What local Pretoria band or artist should we keep our eyes on? urniture designers are always seeking to create new silhouettes to stand out from the crowd. Classic, retro and minimal designs all compete for space in stores and trade show floors, with each taking its turn in the limelight as trends change. But there’s also a new design trend that’s neatly sidestepping all of these: knotted and twisted furniture. And we’re not talking about macramé or chunky knits again, but rather pieces that look like they’ve been literally looped, bent and tied into knots.
At the recent International Contemporary Furniture Fair held in New York, there were a number of exhibitors who showcased this new knotty trend in their work. From benches and sofas to loopy twisted lighting, designers explored this perspective-bending approach in a number of different furniture items. Standouts include the Landscape Sofa from Brooklyn design practice Nea Studio. This modular piece has a flexible construction and a twisted form that creates a couch and daybed all in one.
The roots of this trend lie in two dif ferent places. First, new materials and construction techniques mean designers aren’t as constrained as they might have been before. They are able to push the boundaries of possibility rather than working within set constraints. Second, there’s a generally quite surreal take on design at the moment influenced by cut and paste web culture. While the style may not be for everyone (or, in fact, most people), the technical innovation required points towards some interesting developments in this space in future.

Q: How did your business start? A: A fter working for a couple of jewellery stores, as a designer and goldsmith I gained great experience and exposure. Although I really enjoyed my work, I came to realise that I wouldn’t be able to live out my other passion – raising a family. My experience allowed me to start my own business, which gave me the flexibility to plan my work around my family. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Initially the area, Elarduspark, wasn’t specifically chosen with my company in mind, but it was central in Pretoria. Since the nature of my business involves consulting individually with each client, I have the flexibility to meet a client where it is most convenient for them and then use my premises for the manufacturing process.

outh Africa’s tourism industry is one of the country’s greatest assets. Already it contributes around 3% to GDP, and there is no doubt of its potential to be even more significant than that. Tourism can also have a significant impact on employment. Around 4,5% of South Africa’s entire workforce is employed in this sector, and since 2008 tourism has added more jobs to the economy than construction, trade, agriculture or manufacturing. It is also an industry that offers great possibilities for entrepreneurs, as there are fairly low barriers to entry for small-scale businesses. Opening a bed and breakfast or starting a tour operator are highly accessible business opportunities.
H
ome loan customers are often not aware that some banks may continue to monitor their credit profiles and perform updated affordability checks up until bond registration. This means consumers taking on further debt after they have received a home loan approval may find that the approved home loan amount is reduced, repriced or declined altogether.
Tommy Nel, head of credit, FNB Home Loans, says, “We have found that consumers are often unaware that taking out further debt after their home loan is approved will trigger a review on the home loan application. We continually reassess loans that we have approved in the window up until the bond registers in the Deeds Office and the property is transferred into the new owner’s name.” Any new adverse information listed against any of the applicants in this bond
registration window, such as missed payments or defaults or further debt taken on, triggers the review process. The reassessment will take into account this new information on the applicant’s credit profiles as well as any new debt obligations entered into. “This can result in repricing of the home loan, a lower amount offered or, in some cases, even a complete decline of a previously approved loan,” Nel says.
After the elections there is likely to be resurgence in the property market and a bit of an uptick as consumer confidence returns and more buyers get ready to get back into market. While the numbers in the property market do reflect a slowdown, there are buyers and there is a certain amount of available stock. ADRIAN GOSLETT, REGIONAL DIRECTOR AND CEO, RE/MAX OF SOUTHERN AFRICA
Brett Hendricks, general manager, Thebe Tourism Group, says this is something that the country really needs to take advantage of. He believes that tourism can be an example to other industries by supporting entrepreneurship through the transfer of skills rather than formal qualifications. Hendricks argues that because tourism is a service industry, what is most important in this business is not the level of your formal education, but the quality of the service you can provide to your customers. And this is a critical observation because it highlights how important training and the transfer of skills are to the development of new businesses. The tourism sector has two great advantages here. The first is that all of the necessary skills are already present within the industry and there are uncomplicated ways of sharing them. Internships and mentorship programmes are obvious ways for the private sector to identify and develop potential entrepreneurs. What makes this additionally appealing is that the scope for growing tourism in South Africa is so immense that established businesses needn’t be concerned about creating competition for themselves by doing this. In fact, they could be potentially making their own service more appealing.
A recent PwC study projected that hotel room revenue in South Africa will expand at a compound annual growth rate of 7,8% up to 2020
A simple example could be a wine farm that supports the development of tour operators through programmes that teach business skills, customer service and provide a deeper insight into the wine industry. Those same tour operators will then bring customers back to the wine farm in what is ultimately a win-win for all concerned. This doesn’t take any great insight or resources. The main requirement is will. Already these kinds of initiatives are taking place, and the more they do, the more we will see tourism growing into the economic force for change that it has the potential to be.
OceanDune marks start of Sibaya T
ongaat Hulett has officially handed over the first site at Sibaya Coastal Precinct, on the North Coast, giving the new landowners and developers, OceanDune Developments, the green light to begin construction on the sold-out development, OceanDune. Tongaat Hulett’s infrastructural construction is due to commence this month. OceanDune set a benchmark in terms of its reported R900m sell out within four months of launch, with the majority of buyers being
permanent residents, according to Sithembiso Mthembu, Sibaya development executive, Tongaat Hulett Developments. “The response to OceanDune has affirmed our long-held understanding of the demand for both residential and commercial opportunities that reside within Sibaya.” A retail element at OceanDune will bring up the total investment value to an estimated R1bn in total. Mthembu says OceanDune will be the first development in the 1,000ha precinct.
Sibaya was conceptualised to work with the landscape, with 60% of the Sibaya concept plan being made up of green space. This includes existing coastal forest but also rehabilitated landscape. Ultimately Sibaya Coastal Precinct will offer something for people at various stages of life, including residential offerings and services, leisure facilities, as well as a measure of retail development to serve local residents. Other complementary uses for education, medical and retirement facilities are also on the cards.
Rate of house price growth mildly positive T he FNB House Price Index for July increased by 7,1% year on year, slightly slower than the revised 7,2% rate recorded for June.
This may be signalling a turning point in house price inflation after some mild acceleration in prior months. Examining house price growth month on month suggests that a period of slightly better, or slightly “less weak”, economic performance during recent months may still be driving relatively
solid house price growth compared with a dip in late 2015/early 2016.
In real terms, when adjusting for CPI (Consumer Price Index) inflation, the rate of house price growth remains mildly positive, having recorded 0,9% in June. Examining the longer-term real house price trends (house prices adjusted for CPI inflation), the level at June 2016 was 5,7% up on the October 2011 post-recession low. However, the average real house
price level remains -18% below the high reached in December 2007 at the back end of the residential boom period. The average price of homes transacted in June was R1,082,605.
Mildly positive real house price inflation suggests a market still very well balanced between supply and demand. However, many other nonprice housing market indicators point to a broad slowdown, raising the risk that the market can move slowly away from “equilibrium” in the near term.

T
he neighbourhood is centrally situated in south-west Centurion making it a convenient location for people working in the Tshwane metropole, Ekurhuleni, Joburg and the West Rand as far as Krugersdorp. The triangle-shaped, secluded – but by no means isolated – residential area is bordered by the R28/N14 to the north and Samrand Avenue (Midrand) to the south. The Old Pretoria/ Johannesburg main roads form the eastern border while the R55 borders the neighbourhood in the west. Spruits and wetlands run through the suburbs. “We still have specific fauna and flora living in the
habitat in the wetlands adding to the original philosophy.” The community is close-knit and caring.
