A

s the spokesperson of Pretoria’s beloved National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, Craig Allenby’s friendliness, passion for the beautiful 85ha facility and knowledge in his field are widely known among the people of the Jacaranda City. He grew up in Pretoria and attended boarding school in Rustenburg before starting his career at the zoo in 1991. Craig has always had an affinity for guest relations and enhancing the zoo’s visitor experience. He currently lives in the well-established mountainous suburb of La Montagne in Pretoria East and has been a resident of the suburb for the past six years.

“The neighbourhood suits me, and the tree-lined streets, the tranquillity and the beauty of the natural scenery all add to the charm of La Montagne,” says Craig. “Nature is all around, with Skuilkrans Koppie park just a stone’s throw away. Here you can relax, unwind and recharge your batteries after a long week in the hustle and bustle of city life. With the zoo situated in the Pretoria city centre it’s always a pleasure to get back to the basics of relaxation. I particularly love the fact that nature is on your doorstep; several bird species have made themselves at home in my garden and bring a touch of beauty to my home. The residents are also always friendly.” Craig holds a master’s degree in tourism management from the University of Pretoria, which he received in 2014.

That same year, he also received the esteemed Media Liaison Officer of the Year award presented by the National Press Club, and in 2015, he won Finalist of the Year: Editor from the SA Publication Forum. When asked about his favourite places to visit in the area, Craig says, “The German deli, Alma Butchery, is a fantastic place to get food. The owner and staff are outgoing and always go out of their way to help. Then there’s the German bakery, Die Brotstube, which is the perfect place for a pastry and a good cup of coffee.” The Grove Mall is also within easy driving distance, and Craig particularly enjoys going there for an Americano at Fournos. “I love a good cup of Joe! A good movie is also one of my indulgences and I often go to The Grove Mall. Then, of course, La Montagne is in close proximity to the Deutsche Schule Pretoria and its fantastic annual Oktoberfest.” How would Craig spend a free weekend in the area? “I absolutely love and appreciate the scenery I can see from my house and often entertain family and friends with the amazing view in the background. A good home-cooked meal or a delicious braai enjoyed on my house’s balcony is something I greatly enjoy. My two dogs, Venus and Apollo, also enjoy keeping me busy!”

Q: How did your business start? A: W hile working for 40 years with Persian and oriental carpets, I was accumulating antiques – especially Victorian glass, curiosities and antique books. It had always been a dream of mine to open a small antique shop. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: T he quaint little village-like centre that I’m situated in is right in the hub of the university and surrounds. Also, with its proximity to the Gautrain station, it seemed like the obvious area. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I previously worked in the Arcadia and Hatfield areas and decided to remain in a familiar area. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: T he premises are ideal because the family of the students and people from the nearby embassies enjoy meandering around the shops and restaurants. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: Immediately in front of me is Glass and Fire, a charming shop that makes its own beads using Murano

glass, run by two gentlemen. To my right, I have The Jewellery Repair Company, which has amazing art, glass work and oil paintings by Hettie Pullinger and her charming partner, William Judson. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: At this point, shop rentals are infinitely better than the rental you’d pay in any mall. This allows selling prices to be affordable, which is great in this economy. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: It varies daily, given that we’re open seven days a week. Usually, Thursdays through to Sundays are our busiest days, and we have a lot of out-of-towners on weekends. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: No, we don’t have any expansion plans at this stage. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: I’m 75 years old! However, I’m slowly becoming familiar with how to post online and, in fact, I’ve once been successful too. Q: What’s your most popular item? A: My most popular items are carpets and textiles.

abio Venturi, director, Terramanzi Group, works as a sustainable design consultant and believes that going green starts at home. He presents homeowners with an opportunity to be eco-conscious and save money. “There are over 50 shades of green, so step back, take a deep breath and start with good, rational design – ideally aligned with a tested, best practice standard for homes, which here is the Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies (Edge) rating system, managed by the Green Building Council of South Africa,” says Fabio. Homes following Edge principles are designed to use at least 20% less water, electricity and embodied energy, he says, and there are many things to consider when retrofitting an existing home or building a new one. Aside from improving behavioural habits (like switching off lights), it’s possible to have an eco-friendly home through clever design and other technical features.

Energy

• Windows are one of the biggest conduits for heat loss (in winter) and heat gain (in summer). Only 20% of your wall area should be windows. • If you enjoy views and window space, install Low-E glass. This helps retain heat in winter and reduce heat gain in warmer seasons/climates. • A light-coloured roof and external walls will reflect heat and keep the home cool inside.

• External shading limits the amount of heat coming into the home and helps keep the interior cool. • Roof insulation is one of the most cost-effective ways to reduce the amount of energy needed to heat up or cool a building. In cold or temperate climates/seasons, insulate the home thoroughly before installing the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems.

Equipment

• About 60% of energy used by a washing machine goes towards water heating, so models that use less water use less energy. • CFL, LED, or T5 bulbs reduce a building’s energy consumption. These bulbs last longer than incandescent bulbs, so maintenance costs are also reduced. • Motion sensor lights also reduce energy consumption.

Water

• Low-flow showerheads reduce the amount of water used. • A dishwasher uses less water than washing dishes in the sink, and also saves time and money. • Dual-flush toilets reduce the amount of water used from around 13L in a single flush to 6L and 3L respectively. • Install rainwater harvesting systems and pipe the water to your washing machine, dishwasher and even shower and bath areas. Grey water also works, but requires diligent maintenance to contain odours.
