inger Joseph Clark, wellknown for his incredible performances of the music of Freddie Mercury and Queen, feels privileged to live in the suburb of Waverley in Pretoria’s Moot area northeast of the city centre. Joseph grew up in Amarillo, Texas, and came to South Africa in 1983 to join the South African Ballet Theatre (formerly known as PACT Ballet) as a guest artist in a production of Swan Lake. “I fell in love with the country and stayed.” Joseph also fell in love with South African actress Elzette Maarschalk. The couple have lived in Breyer Avenue, Waverley, since 1995. This street is particularly sought-after for the magnificent views from its elevated position against the slopes of the Magaliesberg mountain range.
The couple’s favourite place to visit is Cappuccinos in Waverley Plaza. “It's also our dog Freddie’s favourite eating establishment,” says Joseph. Retreating to the peace and quiet of this neighbourhood and their home is the perfect antidote to Joseph’s hectic work schedule. When asked about what makes a house a home, Joseph says: “Creating an environment that pleases you; making it your own, not for resale value or cosmetic looks. A home is to be lived in, loved in – not to be showcased.”

Joseph says the Waverley of 22 years ago was “pleasant, quiet and open. There were no fences between us and our neighbours. You could walk directly to your neighbours without going out onto the street.” Over the years, Waverley has changed quite a bit in some regards. “Fences have gone up and lots of property subdividing has increased the amount of traffic considerably.” Quite a few townhouse complexes have emerged, too. “Deep down it’s still such a pleasant neighbourhood. Waverley has an amazing amalgamation of people. Every street has its own character, like a different suburb in itself. in a residential area near an office park and shopping centre. This means we’re close to our clients and there’s a constant stream of potential clients passing by daily. Newlands has great diversity with a large retirement village nearby and many young professionals visiting the area from the businesses around Menlyn. Newlands is also safe with active community police and a neighbourhood watch. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I contacted an estate agent to help me find a property, but actually found the premises listed online on Gumtree. It only took about a month of looking before I found it.

ffects Hair and Makeup Studio opened in November last year. The salon is close to an office park and shopping centre, so there’s a constant stream of potential clients passing by the property. Owner Hannes Greyling tells us more about the business. Q: How did your business start? A: I’ve been working in the hair and make-up industry for more than 10 years with a great deal of exposure to the entertainment industry. I always wanted to run my own business, and in November last year I took over an existing salon business, renaming and rebranding it. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: The biggest factor was that we would be situated on a busy road

Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: For the most part, the building was already kitted out for a salon. It already had furnishings, plumbing, ample parking and there was a private garden creating a welcoming atmosphere for clients. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: My landlord occupies the building directly adjacent to the salon. The other neighbours are mainly residential houses and offices. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? A: For similar spaces in the area rental prices range from R15,000 to over R40,000 depending on where it is. Q: How many people go through your store each day? A: We see between 15 and 30 clients on an average day.
Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: We’re still developing our services and are constantly adding new treatments and services to our salon. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We use our website and social media platforms – Facebook (facebook.com/effectshair), Twitter (@effects_hair) and Instagram (@effectshair) – mostly for marketing purposes. Q: What's your most popular service? A: Hair colour, cut and styling is our main focus and all other services serve to complement the hair services.
