Elardus Park

Fashion designer, Thomas Thomson, tells us about his neighbourhood WORDS: BETSIE LOOCK-VAN DER MERWE IMAGES: STEVEN SEGAL & RENE HUGO

T

homas Thomson grew up in Harrismith in the Free State. “I have a twin sister and together we created a world of our own in a wonderful countryside town.” In 1993, the young Thomas moved to Pretoria to start his career as a designer. Four years later he established the Thomas Thomson haute couture label.

THOMAS THOMSON AND PRETORIA BEAUTY, ADELE SEGAL, WEARING ONE OF THOMAS’S DESIGNS.

I can hide away from the hustle and bustle of city life THOMAS THOMSON

When Thomas decided to move to Elardus Park from Menlo Park, where he lived for many years, one of the key attractions of this established suburb was its location. “Elardus Park is so well placed in terms of accessibility. I’m very close to all highways and traffic flows rather easily.” Safety also added to the appeal. “This neighbourhood has been fairly safe in comparison to many others.” Thomas loves that the suburb reminds him of Harrismith, especially on quiet days. “I can hide away from the hustle and bustle of city life. I often just take long walks and look at the different kinds of houses one finds here. Many days I go jogging and sometimes I stop to say hello to the birds doing a chorus line. It all reminds me of my childhood in a profound, joyful way. Altogether, a more relaxed vibe is very tangible.”

He says the suburb has all the facilities and amenities required to satisfy residents’ daily needs. “Everything you need is within range. I’m positioned in the middle of three shopping centres, which makes life very convenient. Elardus Park is located next to one of Pretoria’s most popular high schools and, therefore, is a very family-oriented suburb. People here are unpretentious and have a ‘live and let live’ attitude.” On his favourite spots to visit in the area, he says, “I still love the big screen, so I often go to the cinema, which is about 5km from me. We have two shopping centres and I do enjoy Cornwall View shopping centre. There’s a wonderful sushi restaurant in both these centres that I like to visit.” When asked if he draws inspiration from his neighbourhood, Thomas – who has dressed more than 40 South African celebrities over a 25-year career, including Lizz Meiring, Laurika Rauch, Thuli Sithole, to name a few – says, “I’m not sure that it’s the neighbourhood per se, but I do find a new and different energy since I moved here. My inspiration is drawn from many things in life: music, people and even just watching a movie. I do, however, find myself creatively excited with a new desire for creating since being here.”

J

ohani House of Hair is a beautiful hair salon in Moreleta Park focused on keeping the client happy. After training in salons overseas Johani Venter, owner, decided to use her many years of experience to open her own business.

second baby, we decided it was best to run my business from home. Shops in centres were just too expensive and I really wanted to be a stay-at-home mom. The location is always a thing. If you move too far you’ll lose clients. So it was important to get the location right. Q: How did you find your premises? A: I found the premises online on Property24. We just loved the garden, so we couldn’t resist. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: The salon is away from the hustle and bustle of the malls. It has a relaxing atmosphere and a beautiful view over the garden and Pretoria. The colour area is away from the basin and cutting area, which makes it more private.

Q: How did your business start? A: I started my training with the most amazing hairdresser in the country, Gary Rom. I worked closely with him for 12 years. I also did training in London and India and I've trained hundreds of hairdressers in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Port Elizabeth, East London and Pretoria. I felt that it was time to open my own salon, and that’s exactly what I did.

Q: Who are your neighbours? A: We have amazing neighbours: residential owners and Choose Life Church.

which grows every month. I don't work full days anymore so, for my time spent in the salon, I’m mostly fully booked. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: Yes, I want to start a small tea garden in our beautiful garden. This will hopefully be realised in the near future. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have a website (johanihair. co.za) and a Facebook page (facebook.com/johanihair) that my clients can use to get a hold of us. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Our cutting and colouring are really popular and lately more and more people are starting to get into Brazilian blowouts.

Bridges to improve access to Sandton

P

rogress is being made in improving access for everyone travelling into, out of and around Sandton Central. Some of the largest positive impacts have come from building new bridges. Three new bridges that connect Sandton Central will improve transport for the area and forge stronger bonds between different communities.

district manager, Sandton Central Management District, which manages the public urban spaces of the city. Over 10,000 people walk between neighbouring Alexandra and Sandton Central every day. The City of Joburg is bringing high-quality public transport that's safe, affordable and reliable to the people of Alexandra and Sandton. Also, it's making walking and cycling easier, safer and more convenient.

The green light These tips can help you live an environmentally friendly home life. Start small and it will soon become second nature. WORDS: ANNE SCHUAFFER

“Sandton Central is South Africa’s cosmopolitan centre of trade, ideas, interaction and lifestyle. Excellent accessibility plays a key role in this. Ensuring that people can easily come to work, visit, stay, shop, or be entertained in Sandton Central is something we take seriously. We strive to provide an exceptional experience,” says Elaine Jack, city improvement

“We are addressing the ill effects of the past and implementing programmes that are stitching the city together, ensuring that economic opportunities and services are closer to the people. This allows people to live, work, play and pray in a much more cost-effective and efficient manner,” says Councillor Nonhlanhla Helen Makhuba, MMC for Transport, City of Johannesburg.

Once you have rid yourself of unused, unwanted and unnecessary items, you will be in a better position to decide what kind of accommodation to downsize to. If you don’t dispense with enough junk, you might fall into the trap of seeking a space to accommodate all of your stuff and not necessarily looking for an ideal space that could work wonderfully for you. MIKE GREEFF, CEO, GREEFF PROPERTIES

Salt River urban renewal initiative

T

he Salt River urban renewal integrates several related projects that aim to increase and upgrade the current available space. Dawie Swart, CEO, Investicore, acquired 13 Brickfield Road in May 2015 and with Construct Capital, a property finance and development company, redeveloped it into a mixed commercial and retail space. “I aim to create an environment that can accommodate an eclectic mix of businesses to serve the area. From a chef’s academy, art supply store and restaurants to innovative tech companies and other creative

industries,” says Swart. He has already successfully redeveloped an old textile building at 97 Durham Avenue, now the home of the Red and Yellow advertising school, Zando, The Creamery, Get Wine and the Devil’s Peak Brewing Company, to name a few. Swart says that while Woodstock had many homes, Salt River was once the industrial heart of the city. “This means Salt River lends itself to redevelopment better than Woodstock, as industrial properties tend to be larger than (properties in) Woodstock meaning that the land assembly process is easier and less invasive to existing residential residents.”

Menlyn Maine road access

O

ne feature of the Menlyn Maine development is its accessibility and convenience. A network of roads to facilitate ease of access from the highway and surrounding suburbs has been opened, completing the vision of a regional growth node. According to Carl Jankowitz, director, Menlyn Maine Investment Holdings, “The casino is the newest development to open and an indoor entertainment arena seating 8,000 people is due for completion by end October 2017. A five-star hotel and conference centre will be completed by March 2018.

"For this reason, it was therefore imperative that the masterplan encompass a comprehensive road network infrastructure to mitigate traffic congestion and ensure a pleasant experience for all visitors.” For those travelling west along Atterbury Road, access has opened up into Corobay Avenue providing direct access to the underground parking of Menlyn Maine Central Square. There’s also a thoroughfare along Aramist Avenue from January Masilela Drive, which runs parallel to the N1 Freeway, providing several access points into the development.

M

ore than anything, being environmentally friendly makes sense economically. It’s a great idea to call in a professional to run an energy audit on your home, but you can also start small. One way to jump start a smarter home life is to switch off, turn off, buy less and reuse more. Ask yourself: “Do I need this? Could I borrow or hire it?” Essentially, be mindful of how you live. If you have children, it’s vital that they learn how to function in a world with finite resources, but you may find that they’re good teachers too. Just as we learned about the horrors of litter, they’re learning about sustainability. Where to start? Don’t think that “it’s not worth the saving” – it is and, of course, many tiny savings add up to make a big difference.

Reduce your electricity and water usage simply by being more aware:

• Lights: turn off the lights when you leave a room; use outdoor (and even some indoor) motion-sensor lights; replace all bulbs (and, over time, fittings) with quality, longlasting compact fluorescent lights. • Indoor water: only shower for a few minutes; install low-flow shower heads; only use the washing machine and dishwasher with a full load; wash clothes in cold water whenever possible – as much as 85% of the energy used goes to heating the water; use the basin plug – don’t leave the tap running; reduce the number of times you flush the toilet. • Outdoor water: cover the pool to prevent evaporation; recycle your grey water for use in the garden – this can be as simple as using a container in the shower to collect water or redirecting water

from your shower or basin into a holding tank or your garden. • Heating/cooling: change your geyser, air-conditioning and heating to a lower setting. If you do it over time, you won’t notice the difference. • Electricity: unplug chargers and appliances when they’re not being used; switch off your computer overnight. • Appliances: replace appliances with energy-rated alternatives. • General: open curtains/blinds to let in sunlight and minimise use of artificial light.

MORE GREEN TIPS: • Skip the bottled water: install a water filter and use a glass, aluminium or reusable water bottle. • Shop at a local market: the fruit, vegetables, dairy and eggs will usually be less expensive, often organically grown (even if it doesn’t shout about it on the label), will have travelled a shorter distance to get to you (less fuel equals less pollution) and you’ll be supporting a local business. • Buy in bulk: you’ll shop less often, save money and use fewer containers. • Cleaning products: this is often a sizable chunk of your household spending. If you have the time, make your own – if not, buy environmentally friendly options. • Rainwater/grey water: tanks such as the varying sizes and creative shapes/colours available from, say, JoJo, make this a worthwhile investment when the rains come. • Herb garden – plant it. It’s easy, it’s cheap and it’s wonderful!
