Recently I came across a project that sounds as incredible on a larger scale. It’s a new worldwide community project that was launched by colour and paint expert Annie Sloan. The idea is to transform local community buildings with her paint and decor accessories. You nominate a building in your area that you think needs a new lease of life (like a school hall, library, or community centre), and put forward your reasons for your nomination before the end of the month.

Then 25 buildings will be chosen and announced at the beginning of next month and given a mini makeover. Now that’s something inspiring – colouring buildings in need. H

azeldean Brewing Company is a new microbrewery situated in Pretoria East at the popular Cowhouse Market. Inspired by the heritage that surrounds the Hazeldean Farm, the company has built its brand on a sturdy foundation and topped it with loads of inspiring creativity and friendships. We chatted to Marius Botha and his wife and right-hand woman, Evelyn, about their new venture.

The brains

Marius, the founder and owner, has been brewing beer at home for four years. When he isn’t brewing beer he visits local and international breweries. He started as a hobbyist brewing 20L batches in his garage to enjoy with friends and family. This was until he got the opportunity to start selling his beer at the Cowhouse Market. A mechanical engineer with an immense passion for beer, Marius left his job to pursue his dream of brewing on a larger scale. After having a mere three months to get his business running while working full time, it has been six months since he poured the first beer last October.

he seventh annual Fijnwyn Wine and Food Festival – Lucky No.7 – is upon us, and it promises to be one to remember. Hosted at Shokran Events Venue, the festival has become increasingly popular and is considered one of Pretoria’s most popular wine events. Fijnwyn prides itself on only inviting the best-quality vendors to participate – from the big names to the smaller brands – all promising to wow you.

Vienna Lager, which is a favourite among marketgoers. The Vienna Lager was also awarded a top-15 spot in the 2015 SAB Craft Championships. The second beer is a spin on the wellknown IPA – the company created an India Pale Pilsner, a hoppy beer that doesn’t conform to usual beer styles. Then there is the Traditional Weissbier, a Bavarian-style wheat beer with moderately spicy clove and banana notes. The latest beer addition to the repertoire is the Premium Pilsner, a refined Pilsner with Indian Pale Pilsner roots.

The venue

Pretoria East is home to Shokran Events Venue, a beautiful Moroccan-inspired venue admired for its tranquil farm setting and its hospitality. The venue is nestled between pecan nut and almond plantations, as well as indigenous trees, lush green lawns and farmstyle stoeps.

Marius also features a beer from a specially selected local guest brewer every month. For marketgoers who aren’t keen on beer, there is a Rooibos Wooded Cider from Windermere on offer. Make sure to try out the popular radler, a drink with a long history in German-speaking regions and is similar to a beer shandy. Hazeldean Brewing Company’s Radler is made with Marius’s Pilsner and Evelyn’s home-made lemonade.

The festival takes place at the Shokran Events Venue on 30 April and 1 May. Marinara

Margherita

Just over a century old, the pizza margherita was named after Queen Margherita, who was the first queen of Italy. Its toppings traditionally include tomato, mozzarella and basil – representing the colours of the Italian flag.

Literally meaning “meat with dough”, this Lebanese dish is made with minced onions, usually ground lamb, cumin and yoghurt, and dates back to the 15th century.

Deep-dish pizza

Hailing from Chicago, the deep dish pizza, aka the Chicago deep-dish, is known for its deep edge that allows for the piling up of ingredients on its base. Though unlike most pizzas, this one is best enjoyed with a knife and fork.

he formal dining room is on its way to becoming a thing of the past. For many people the space represents a suburban ideal that just doesn’t resonate with how we live today. For one thing, people often live in smaller homes with no space for a dining room (or could find better use for the space: from home offices to rooms for additional family members).

As a response to this trend, we’re seeing the so-called eat-in kitchen as a focus in interior design. This means that the emphasis is on cooking and sharing food in the same space, with elements like kitchen islands being designed with open sides to allow for seating right where the action is. Alternatively, as in the Cape Town kitchen designed by Alpine German Kitchens, counters are also being extended to include an integrated dining area. While this is not necessarily a new phenomenon – kitchen tables and breakfast nooks have been included in homes for a long time – making them the primary dining experience in a home is.

ivani Naturals is a skincare company that makes use of natural ingredients from indigenous South African herbs. Founder Ntshantsha Tafeni–Majombozi originally sold her products through cosmetic shops and health spas, but has in the last year begun opening a series of stores around Joburg – and the business just keeps growing.

Q: How did your business start? A: My grandmother used natural herbs for the treatment of minor ailments. When I was growing up I lost interest in her remedies, but later, I decided to try to identify why black people are losing their traditional herbal wisdom. This led to me and Bulelwa Mapongwana to come up with the Yivani Naturals concept in 2009 to overcome the stigma attached to traditional healing. We launched the business in 2011 with funding from my own pocket. In the last year, we have opened stores in 27Boxes in Melville and then at the Workshop in Newtown. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Newtown has a cultural traditional history, and we wanted to be part of that vibe. We have a product that takes people down memory lane, and the use of natural herbs fitted in perfectly with the history of the area. Q: How did you find your premises? A: We were attracted by the idea of the Workshop, so we discussed with them which space would best suit our needs. Q: Why are the premises ideally suited to your business? A: We loved the concept of the Watershed in Cape Town, which promotes small, proudly South African businesses, and the people

A: We have the Glitter Nail Boutique on the one side, and a beading shop on the other. Q: What are the shop rental/ sales prices like in this area? The most expensive addresses in South Africa Where only a handful of sales topped the R20m price mark five years ago, there are today no fewer than 22 of the country’s residential streets where this is now the average sales price. Prices in these streets now regularly top the R20m price mark and range to as much as R100m in Sandton and R200m to R350m on Cape Town’s Atlantic Seaboard, according to Samuel Seeff, chairman, Seeff property group.

Based on a study of Lightstone and Propstats data undertaken by the Seeff property group, the Cape property market is literally streets ahead of the rest of the country with no less than 15 of these streets – nine on the Atlantic Seaboard (Clifton, Fresnaye and Bantry Bay) and six in the Southern Suburbs (Bishopscourt and Constantia). The remaining seven streets are in the Joburg and Sandton suburbs of

Sandhurst, Hyde Park and Bryanston. “So, if you are looking for the most exclusive address in the country, make it one of these top-ranked streets,” says Seeff. “By investing here, your property is surrounded by some of the most valuable residential real estate in the country, and, based on history, property values are likely to continue appreciating at inflation-topping rates.”

The first thing to understand about local hedge funds is that, for the most part, they are not the sort of weird and wonderful products that make the news in other parts of the world. The Reit sector to consider role in political change

T

he chairman of the South African Real Estate Investment Trust (Reit) Association, Laurence Rapp, has accepted a challenge to consider what role this sector can play in ushering in new leadership. Addressing the South African Reit Conference in Sandton in March, Reuel Khoza, chairman, Aka Capital, said South African business had to consider its role in driving change in South Africa.

“We are as much cursed with a spell of leadership famine or blessed with the feast of leadership. The choice is ours. We can develop and unleash the talent that is all around, or allow it to wither on the vine and continue lamenting the paucity of leadership in South Africa,” says Khoza. Khoza challenged South Africa’s business leaders to do what they could to challenge the current regime and to support a generation of new leaders. “Nobody is predetermined to

be our leader in spite of everything. This requires an understanding that in the final analysis, the citizen is responsible for its own future. The crossroads South Africa faces, demand resolutions,” he says. Rapp says the Reit sector should take these words to heart. “We heard a business leader speak so frankly about the need for dramatic change and the role that business has to play in driving that change. We in the Reit sector need to consider our role.”

When considering the sale of an investment property, as with any investment, assess your position annually. There are, however, a few things that anyone looking at these products should be aware of. The first is that retail hedge funds may not be as liquid as unit trusts. Where money in a unit trust can be accessed in a few days, withdrawals from hedge funds could take up to a month. Hedge funds may also require fairly large initial investments. The first retail products need a minimum lump sum of R50,000. Finally, the best way for investors to get into hedge funds will probably be through funds of hedge funds that blend a selection of managers and funds together. This not only reduces the risk of trying to pick the right products, but also means you will get a broad selection of the best of what is available.
