Since Doornpoort is such a quiet neighbourhood I can really relax when I’m home without being bothered by lots of noise. It helps me to concentrate when I write songs or work in my office. Being so much in the public eye, I can live a private life in this almost secluded suburb.

ans of Afrikaans singer Jennifer Zamudio will be delighted to hear that the songstress will be releasing her 12th album in July. Being a true entertainer by heart, Jennifer is passionate about making people happy with her music and lyrics. She started her singing career in 2000 and moved to the suburb of Doornpoort in Pretoria in the same year. As a proud fisherman’s daughter who grew up in a small town on the West Coast of South Africa, she appreciates the peace and quiet of this neighbourhood nestling on the north-eastern outskirts of the city behind the Magaliesberg mountain range.
Home sweet home When Jennifer chose Doornpoort as her place of residence, the fact that it was so quiet attracted her the most “and all the trees. The climate on this side of the mountain is also much warmer than any other part of Pretoria; it is almost sub-tropical, which makes for awesome gardening. The winters are wonderful and it almost never frosts here”. Since she first moved to the leafy suburb, it has expanded tremen dously, says Jennifer. “There is a lot more houses and estates. When I moved here, there was still much vacant land.

We literally only had a corner cafe and garage, but now we also have our own ‘mall’, Wingtip Crossing, which is even closer to me than the Kolonnade Shopping Centre. The corner cafe also expanded into a small shopping centre with a huge Spar, which, of course, is walking distance from my house.” Other developments include Wonderboom Airport becoming a national airport. “Montana Hospital also expanded and is now one of the major hospitals in Pretoria with an excellent trauma unit, being so close to the major routes.” Doornpoort is bordered by the N1 highway in the east, the N4 highway in the north and Wonderboom Airport to its west, and is located only a few kilometres from the well-known Sefako Makgatho (previously Zambesi) Road. It’s neighboured by well-developed and established suburbs like Montana and Sinoville. “However, the residential area is so tranquil and serene, it really doesn’t feel as if you even live in a city, or so close to the hustle and bustle,” concludes Jennifer.
Gems in the neighbourhood She loves the fact that Doornpoort residents have everything they need literally on their doorsteps. “We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to shopping facilities. I like to do shopping at Food Lover’s Market and then,
of course, the Kolonnade Shopping Centre or Kolonnade Retail Park.” The singer’s favourite restaurants for lunch or a nice dinner with friends are either Crawdaddy’s Montana or Toureiro House of Prawns both offering an extensive choice of seafood, meat or pizza and pasta dishes. “I also like to go and browse through the latest books at Graffiti Book Shop at Zambesi Junction – now that is a true hidden gem!”
Perfect Sunday Jennifer says for her to unwind, she needs to get home from a tour, walk in and immediately “feel I am home. A warm cosy house with a nice garden for me is a home. Your home should make you feel comfortable to do anything you want – it’s after all your home.” She adds, “This may sound a bit strange, but my office is one of my favourite spots at home, because I am a bit of a workaholic, and then secondly, my garden. I like to sit outside on my patio and relax with a nice glass of wine and simply stare at my garden.” Gardening is one of Jennifer’s hobbies and she also enjoys the company of her pets – two dogs and an African Grey parrot. When going out, it’s usually for lunch or dinner at one of her favourite restaurants or shopping and browsing around at the Kolonnade Shopping Centre.

My business neighbourhood Mosaic Arts makes beautiful mosaics for interiors and crafting in Silvertondale WORDS: ZENA LE ROUX
IMAGE: SUPPLIED
M
osaic Arts has been called the ultimate mosaic shop by the local crafting community as you won’t easily find this many mosaic tiles under one roof. Crafters who visit the shop often don’t realise that their specialty is actually designing and making handcrafted, bespoke mosaics. Floors, tables, murals, pools, coat of arms – they’ve made them all and sent them to the far corners of South Africa and world-over. Artistic and managing director/owner Marina Giovitto Ehlers, shares their passion with us. Q: How did your business start? A: My father was an Italian-trained mosaic artisan. He taught my mother and myself how to mosaic and we both loved it. The business is, therefore, an extension of our and his passion. After my dad passed away, my mom and I started a new version of the business at the end of 2015. Q: Why did you choose this area to set up shop? A: Many years ago, my parents bought a piece of land in Silvertondale when
it was only a piece of open veld in the middle of nowhere. As this property has been ours for so long, it was an obvious choice to build a workshop here. Q: How did you find your premises? A: My parents found it years ago and thought that maybe it might be an investment for the future. Q: Why are they ideally suited to your business? A: Silvertondale is a busy lightindustrial area close to the highway. It’s quiet, relatively safe and easily accessible for customers. For me, it’s a 10-minute drive from home. Our staff come from Soshanguwe, Mamelodi and Moloto with various transport options for them to get to work. Also, our large airy, well-lit studio is ideal for making mosaics. We have ample storage space and a cosy shop with lots of parking. Q: Who are your neighbours? A: There is a myriad of small businesses that are located close to us which offer services such as woodwork, shop fitting, laser cutting, engraving, plastics, hardware, paints, frames and electrical suppliers. They are all within a five-minute drive from our premises. Q: What are the shop rental/sales prices like in this area? A: The area is reasonably priced.
daily basis. Although the majority of our customers are from Gauteng, we have regulars from as far afield as White River, Upington, Amanzimtoti, Gonubie, Swaziland and Malawi. Q: Do you have any expansion plans? A: No, we don’t as our emphasis is on quality rather than size. If you grow bigger, it becomes more difficult to control the quality of the artwork produced. We believe in being hands-on in all aspects of production – from concept, design, and manufacture through to installation on site. Q: Do you operate online as well? A: We have a website, Facebook (@MosaicArtsPretoria) and Instagram (@mosaic_arts_pretoria) presence. Even without an online store, we meet our clients’ needs and courier mosaic tiles and designs all over the country and beyond. Q: What’s your most popular service? A: Giving our clients a fantastic finished product that is much better than they expected. Our shop is like a candy store for grown-ups and is truly therapeutic and inspiring. Innovation and doing out-of-the-box mosaics magnificently is our forte.
SEE FOR YOURSELF: Q: How many people visit your business each day? A: We’re very much a destination shop – we have quite a number of clients visiting our shop on a

Kitchen innovations Cooking in a kitchen that works with and for you, makes the experience that much more enjoyable. What innovations are popping up in 2018? WORDS: ANNE SCHAUFFER

F
or designers, a kitchen needs to be a strong marriage of functionality, flow and good looks with the integration of the individual owner’s tastes and preferences. Brendon Watkins, Capital Kitchens, adds, “Each customer’s kitchen is unique – innovative and stylish, sure, but also functional, well thought out, and easy to use.”
Sustainability
Gas has long been the fuel of choice for cooks – an induction or gas stove is certainly the greener option. For all other appliances, check their ratings – it’ll not only save money but importantly, contribute to the planet. Look for fridges, dishwashers and washing machines rated A or A+ when you replace yours – close on 60% of energy used in a washing machine goes towards water heating, so less water used, less energy.
Hardware design innovation Brendon says the focus on hardware has ramped up considerably, “Now we’re looking at small, luxury details which make life easier like slow-close drawers, gas-stay cupboard doors, anti-slam doors,
Tiptronic (touch) doors and drawers, carousels, butler larders and pop-up plug points (pop up through the counter) and dedicated cellphone or tablet chargers.” Not only is it about making kitchen life easier, but equally, a good design element, “Much revolves around invisibility – conceal the fridge, the microwave, even the door handles and light switches. Cupboards are customised to hold everything unsightly, and cupboard doors and floors are all pared down to a stylish simplicity,” he says.
Countertops
Brendon says some style trends are more shifts than complete changes, “Like the old, thicker 32mm granite countertop. Now the market wants sleeker ones, which are not only more cost-effective, use less material (the greener option), but just look better.” Sealed, matt or sheen finish, uncoloured concrete surfaces are relatively inexpensive, and you can choose chunky, slim or sleek. As a countertop, bamboo is a sustainable material with antibacterial properties, and, of course, different thicknesses and finishes.
Lighting
With kitchens becoming as much living spaces as workplaces, the lighting needs to be flexible enough to accommodate the change between a living and working environment. Balancing mood and functional lighting can be tricky, so dimmers and timed lighting settings are popular. The greenest option (quality LED downlighters) are not only becoming more affordable, but they last years longer than incandescent bulbs. “The trends range from large metal industrial pendant lamps to massive and glam chandeliers, this is often predicated on the size of the kitchen and whether it has distinct zones – cooking, eating, storage, and so on,” says Brendon.
Smart kitchens
Remote controls like cellphones or timers, allow lights, ovens, music stations and televisions to be managed from a distance. Green and smart, a food recycler turns your food scraps into fertiliser, or, at least, says Brendon, “integrate a recycle centre into your cupboards, with partitions for recycling different materials.”
